and especially following chapter 40, 00:00:43.799 --> 00:00:51.400 you find there's four parts where they're known as the servant songs or the servant poems. 00:00:52.620 --> 00:00:56.799 And the verses that we read here in verse 4 through to verse 9 are the third. 00:00:56.799 --> 00:01:00.359 It's the third of these servant songs. 00:01:01.459 --> 00:01:09.679 And as you read through it, what you find is that Isaiah in his day is looking way in the future to another day 00:01:09.679 --> 00:01:12.959 when the servant of the Lord would come. 00:01:13.939 --> 00:01:18.979 And you see it there, especially in verse 6 when it speaks about, 00:01:18.979 --> 00:01:25.039 I gave my back to those who strike and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard. 00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:29.440 And I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting. 00:01:30.440 --> 00:01:36.760 When you look to what Isaiah was seeing there, we find that speaking of our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:01:36.920 --> 00:01:41.640 who gave his back, that by his stripes we would be healed. 00:01:42.360 --> 00:01:44.940 So here we have the third of these servant songs. 00:01:44.939 --> 00:01:50.399 It's most maybe well known, of course, as Isaiah, end of 52 into 53, 00:01:50.599 --> 00:01:56.799 where it speaks of a very vivid imagery of how Jesus would suffer. 00:01:56.879 --> 00:01:59.519 But we find it here and in the other songs too. 00:02:00.420 --> 00:02:03.979 I'm just going to reflect on some of this chapter together this evening 00:02:03.979 --> 00:02:09.360 and see what it says to us, a little of the servant that we see here. 00:02:09.360 --> 00:02:13.220 I want to begin by asking a question. 00:02:14.220 --> 00:02:21.980 If you were to go back to the 28th of February 2020, four years ago today, 00:02:22.740 --> 00:02:27.000 and to think, where do I see myself four years from now? 00:02:27.860 --> 00:02:30.540 What kind of reply would you have given? 00:02:31.900 --> 00:02:35.660 You might think initially about location. 00:02:35.659 --> 00:02:39.240 Perhaps you've not moved at all. 00:02:39.340 --> 00:02:42.300 Perhaps you're living in the same place you were four years ago. 00:02:42.840 --> 00:02:46.280 Or perhaps, I include myself in this, you're in a different place now. 00:02:47.120 --> 00:02:49.120 Some of us will have moved during that time. 00:02:49.699 --> 00:02:52.379 Others, we maybe think of the work situation that we're in. 00:02:52.439 --> 00:02:55.859 Maybe that's changed in that four-year space. 00:02:56.800 --> 00:02:59.919 There's many different kinds of answers that we could come to, 00:03:00.019 --> 00:03:03.859 maybe when you think of where do I see myself in such and such a time. 00:03:03.860 --> 00:03:07.080 But if you go back to the 28th of February 2020, 00:03:08.400 --> 00:03:14.400 would the answer have included things like going through a global pandemic, 00:03:15.500 --> 00:03:18.660 having come through a period of lockdown, 00:03:19.340 --> 00:03:22.500 where the world was almost brought to a standstill, 00:03:23.300 --> 00:03:27.260 and then coming out of that to see the last few years 00:03:27.260 --> 00:03:30.520 and the turmoil of the world in different places, 00:03:30.520 --> 00:03:32.460 our own nation included. 00:03:32.560 --> 00:03:36.960 And we think of other parts of the world where there's conflict and war. 00:03:37.719 --> 00:03:42.780 We think of natural disasters that we've seen happening on a regular basis. 00:03:43.640 --> 00:03:47.800 Would we have been thinking along those lines four years ago? 00:03:48.400 --> 00:03:49.740 In many of these things, 00:03:50.120 --> 00:03:53.000 they'd have been the furthest thing from our mind. 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:55.680 And yet in God's providence, 00:03:55.939 --> 00:03:58.659 we've gone through all of these things. 00:03:59.159 --> 00:04:03.360 And in some, we're still going through these things at this time. 00:04:04.460 --> 00:04:08.139 And if we go back further to the day of Isaiah, 00:04:08.719 --> 00:04:10.219 to the people of God then, 00:04:11.259 --> 00:04:12.560 if you'd asked them, 00:04:13.259 --> 00:04:16.480 where do you see yourselves in four years' time 00:04:16.480 --> 00:04:22.600 prior to them being taken captive by the Assyrian invasion 00:04:22.600 --> 00:04:26.620 that took them away from their homeland into a foreign country, 00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:30.420 if you'd asked them where would they see themselves in four years' time, 00:04:31.020 --> 00:04:35.819 the answer would have been far from being captive in a foreign land 00:04:35.819 --> 00:04:38.900 because everything was going well with them. 00:04:39.640 --> 00:04:40.500 They were wealthy. 00:04:40.620 --> 00:04:41.580 They were prospering. 00:04:41.579 --> 00:04:44.519 They were happy in so many ways. 00:04:45.300 --> 00:04:48.759 But what was happening was they were forgetting God. 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:53.459 And God, as he has reminded us in these last four years, 00:04:53.519 --> 00:04:56.039 that things can change very quickly. 00:04:56.339 --> 00:04:59.959 He was about to remind the people of God in Isaiah's day 00:04:59.959 --> 00:05:03.419 that things can change very quickly as well. 00:05:04.219 --> 00:05:07.219 And so you find the book of Isaiah divided into two, 00:05:07.360 --> 00:05:10.819 where you see initially the first 39 chapters 00:05:10.819 --> 00:05:13.420 where Isaiah is giving a warning, 00:05:14.219 --> 00:05:15.899 a warning for the people to listen, 00:05:16.040 --> 00:05:17.079 to heed the warning, 00:05:17.420 --> 00:05:19.839 that if they don't turn back to God, 00:05:19.920 --> 00:05:22.939 that there are going to be consequences coming upon them. 00:05:23.819 --> 00:05:25.759 But then from chapter 40 onwards, 00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:29.339 you see the consequences of not listening 00:05:29.339 --> 00:05:31.240 and being taken captive. 00:05:32.240 --> 00:05:35.600 But the amazing thing is that God speaks. 00:05:36.560 --> 00:05:38.259 God still speaks to them. 00:05:38.259 --> 00:05:42.060 As he was warning them to listen before they were taken captive, 00:05:42.659 --> 00:05:46.959 so he continues to speak to them as they are in captivity. 00:05:47.860 --> 00:05:50.620 And he's speaking a word of rescue, 00:05:51.219 --> 00:05:52.639 a word of salvation, 00:05:53.279 --> 00:05:56.420 a word of one who would come to save. 00:05:56.939 --> 00:05:58.079 And especially looking, 00:05:58.519 --> 00:06:00.680 as we see in these servant songs, 00:06:00.819 --> 00:06:03.939 to one who would ultimately save his people 00:06:03.939 --> 00:06:06.699 from all their sins. 00:06:07.699 --> 00:06:10.639 And so it's remarkable how even in disobedience, 00:06:10.819 --> 00:06:14.560 God shows mercy and continues to speak to us. 00:06:14.560 --> 00:06:16.699 But as is always the case, 00:06:16.879 --> 00:06:17.680 the question is, 00:06:17.899 --> 00:06:18.980 are we listening? 00:06:20.060 --> 00:06:23.439 Now when you go back to the early days of the pandemic, 00:06:24.040 --> 00:06:28.680 one of the most common Google searches was on prayer 00:06:28.680 --> 00:06:31.579 and how to pray. 00:06:32.819 --> 00:06:34.160 Because people were worried, 00:06:34.319 --> 00:06:35.240 people were anxious, 00:06:35.879 --> 00:06:37.600 people were fearful of what was ahead. 00:06:38.379 --> 00:06:38.939 But you think, 00:06:39.280 --> 00:06:40.300 well, where are we today? 00:06:41.139 --> 00:06:43.439 Is there still that same urgency with people? 00:06:43.519 --> 00:06:45.899 Is there still that same worry with people 00:06:45.899 --> 00:06:47.759 about their lives, 00:06:47.920 --> 00:06:48.639 their future, 00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:51.000 and ultimately eternity? 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:53.980 That worry seems to have gone. 00:06:54.819 --> 00:06:57.319 And with it has a sense of relying 00:06:57.319 --> 00:06:59.300 or looking to God gone. 00:06:59.399 --> 00:07:02.079 But God has warned us again and again. 00:07:02.680 --> 00:07:04.220 The question so often is, 00:07:04.600 --> 00:07:05.699 are we listening? 00:07:06.139 --> 00:07:09.459 You see that in verse 10 here of chapter 50. 00:07:09.579 --> 00:07:11.420 Who among you fears the Lord 00:07:11.420 --> 00:07:14.199 and obeys the voice of his servant? 00:07:14.720 --> 00:07:16.560 Who is listening? 00:07:16.560 --> 00:07:22.860 When you think of what we would want to see in the future, 00:07:23.920 --> 00:07:26.379 if you were to see into the future, 00:07:26.540 --> 00:07:28.019 what would you want to know? 00:07:28.879 --> 00:07:32.379 And what would you do differently as a result? 00:07:33.779 --> 00:07:35.959 We might have all the kinds of different ideas 00:07:35.959 --> 00:07:38.279 of what we would want to know about the future. 00:07:38.360 --> 00:07:40.680 What is the world going to be like? 00:07:40.740 --> 00:07:42.800 What are our lives going to be like? 00:07:42.939 --> 00:07:45.879 What is going to affect us in this life? 00:07:45.879 --> 00:07:48.240 What events are going to come our way? 00:07:48.360 --> 00:07:51.279 There's lots of things we would maybe like to know. 00:07:52.360 --> 00:07:53.779 But God in his wisdom 00:07:53.779 --> 00:07:56.540 doesn't show us many of these things. 00:07:57.600 --> 00:07:59.100 And the Old Testament prophets, 00:07:59.360 --> 00:08:00.579 you find such as Isaiah, 00:08:01.159 --> 00:08:03.379 they were given an insight into the future, 00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:07.659 seeing far ahead into the future 00:08:07.659 --> 00:08:10.000 of what was going to take place 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:11.620 by God's providence. 00:08:12.620 --> 00:08:15.620 But what did they tell the people about? 00:08:16.819 --> 00:08:20.100 Do you see them telling about amazing discoveries 00:08:20.100 --> 00:08:22.219 that would be made of different lands? 00:08:22.860 --> 00:08:26.439 Do you see them speak about how communications would develop 00:08:26.439 --> 00:08:28.779 so that you're able to speak to somebody 00:08:28.779 --> 00:08:30.699 and see someone on the other side of the world 00:08:30.699 --> 00:08:32.939 on your screen and talk to them? 00:08:33.700 --> 00:08:37.820 Do you think it's speaking about these remarkable journeys 00:08:37.820 --> 00:08:39.879 into space or anything like that 00:08:39.879 --> 00:08:42.460 that leaves us fascinated in many ways? 00:08:42.460 --> 00:08:44.240 Are these the important things 00:08:44.240 --> 00:08:47.220 that the prophets were telling the people about? 00:08:48.740 --> 00:08:51.920 All of these things may be amazing in and of themselves, 00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:55.819 but there's nothing more amazing 00:08:55.819 --> 00:08:58.439 than what the prophets were speaking about. 00:08:59.839 --> 00:09:02.179 They pale into insignificance 00:09:02.179 --> 00:09:05.879 compared to what Isaiah is speaking about here 00:09:05.879 --> 00:09:07.479 and the prophets are speaking about 00:09:07.479 --> 00:09:09.639 throughout the Old Testament. 00:09:10.979 --> 00:09:13.079 They were speaking about what is vital, 00:09:13.219 --> 00:09:14.059 what is crucial, 00:09:14.199 --> 00:09:17.459 what is of first importance for us as a people 00:09:17.460 --> 00:09:22.620 and what we should truly stand in awe of 00:09:22.620 --> 00:09:24.160 and be amazed at. 00:09:25.400 --> 00:09:29.280 The very fact that we have turned our back on God, 00:09:29.400 --> 00:09:32.360 that we have put God's word behind our back 00:09:32.360 --> 00:09:34.840 as we were thinking about on Sunday evening, 00:09:35.280 --> 00:09:38.560 how we have rejected God and sinned against God, 00:09:38.559 --> 00:09:42.039 and yet that God in his wonderful grace 00:09:42.039 --> 00:09:44.839 would send his servant, 00:09:45.439 --> 00:09:47.939 his son into this world 00:09:47.939 --> 00:09:50.339 to provide for his people, 00:09:51.479 --> 00:09:54.279 to provide a saviour. 00:09:55.659 --> 00:09:59.159 Do we stand in wonder at that? 00:10:01.839 --> 00:10:03.399 When you think of the hymn, 00:10:04.199 --> 00:10:05.439 How Great Thou Art, 00:10:06.019 --> 00:10:07.879 and the words of that hymn that says, 00:10:07.879 --> 00:10:09.120 O Lord my God, 00:10:09.519 --> 00:10:11.080 when I in awesome wonder 00:10:11.080 --> 00:10:13.419 consider all the worlds 00:10:13.419 --> 00:10:14.980 thy hands have made, 00:10:15.879 --> 00:10:17.500 but when I think 00:10:17.500 --> 00:10:20.159 that God, his son not sparing, 00:10:20.659 --> 00:10:22.220 sent him to die, 00:10:22.860 --> 00:10:24.820 I scarce can take it in, 00:10:25.460 --> 00:10:26.720 that on the cross, 00:10:27.320 --> 00:10:29.500 our burden gladly bearing, 00:10:30.240 --> 00:10:31.460 he bled and died 00:10:31.460 --> 00:10:34.379 to take away our sin. 00:10:34.379 --> 00:10:38.179 Do we stand in wonder 00:10:38.179 --> 00:10:42.919 at the servant who gave his back for us? 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:47.059 Well, what Isaiah is telling the people here 00:10:47.059 --> 00:10:49.439 is urgent for them. 00:10:50.179 --> 00:10:52.259 And he's telling it to us as well, 00:10:52.340 --> 00:10:54.539 because it's urgent for us 00:10:54.539 --> 00:10:57.639 to recognise the one he is speaking about, 00:10:58.059 --> 00:11:02.039 to recognise how significant it is for ourselves, 00:11:02.039 --> 00:11:06.039 the one who gave his back for us. 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:08.339 And there's three things 00:11:08.339 --> 00:11:09.559 just briefly want to take 00:11:09.559 --> 00:11:11.579 from this passage about 00:11:11.579 --> 00:11:13.539 the servant that it speaks of. 00:11:14.039 --> 00:11:15.419 And the first thing is 00:11:15.419 --> 00:11:16.819 the servant's word. 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:19.240 Then secondly, we'll see 00:11:19.240 --> 00:11:20.779 the servant's obedience. 00:11:21.539 --> 00:11:22.779 And then thirdly, 00:11:23.159 --> 00:11:24.819 the servant's light. 00:11:24.820 --> 00:11:26.940 So the first thing we want to see 00:11:26.940 --> 00:11:29.020 is the servant's word. 00:11:30.379 --> 00:11:32.060 As Isaiah is writing 00:11:32.060 --> 00:11:33.560 to the people here, 00:11:33.780 --> 00:11:36.020 it's in the midst of captivity. 00:11:36.300 --> 00:11:37.160 Their world had been 00:11:37.160 --> 00:11:38.680 turned upside down 00:11:38.680 --> 00:11:39.720 in so many ways. 00:11:40.240 --> 00:11:41.600 The temple in Jerusalem 00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:43.480 had been destroyed. 00:11:44.140 --> 00:11:44.920 We've been looking at 00:11:44.920 --> 00:11:45.820 Nehemiah, 00:11:45.879 --> 00:11:47.320 which would come later on, 00:11:47.420 --> 00:11:49.400 although it's different order 00:11:49.400 --> 00:11:50.640 if you look at it in the scriptures. 00:11:50.639 --> 00:11:52.199 But the years are 00:11:52.199 --> 00:11:54.179 Isaiah is writing 00:11:54.179 --> 00:11:55.799 before Nehemiah. 00:11:55.939 --> 00:11:57.740 So it's prior to Jerusalem 00:11:57.740 --> 00:11:59.840 and the people being taken captive 00:11:59.840 --> 00:12:01.159 and Jerusalem destroyed. 00:12:01.799 --> 00:12:02.759 Nehemiah would be writing 00:12:02.759 --> 00:12:03.939 about the restoration. 00:12:04.919 --> 00:12:06.879 Well, here Isaiah is writing to them 00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:08.360 in the midst of them 00:12:08.360 --> 00:12:10.039 being taken captive. 00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:11.679 And it's clear 00:12:11.679 --> 00:12:12.860 as he's writing to them 00:12:12.860 --> 00:12:14.639 that it's because 00:12:14.639 --> 00:12:16.100 of their disobedience 00:12:16.100 --> 00:12:17.819 that they find themselves 00:12:17.819 --> 00:12:19.100 in this situation. 00:12:19.100 --> 00:12:21.340 You see that in verse 1 00:12:21.340 --> 00:12:22.480 to verse 3. 00:12:24.200 --> 00:12:25.680 Just there in
