planted the church. 00:00:54.840 --> 00:00:55.859 He preached the gospel. 00:00:56.979 --> 00:01:01.259 And then a group of people formed into what would be the church at Colossae. 00:01:01.899 --> 00:01:10.120 And then Paul writes two letters, one to the Colossians here, which is the letter to the Colossians. 00:01:10.219 --> 00:01:13.280 And then one to Philemon, which is going to the church at Colossae. 00:01:14.239 --> 00:01:21.039 And you can really feel as you read him that his heart is for these people. 00:01:21.040 --> 00:01:25.360 And I think that's a crazy thing because he likely has never even seen them. 00:01:25.359 --> 00:01:37.700 He says in verse 1 that he has a struggle and he wants to see them, to come to them face to face, that their hearts might be encouraged. 00:01:37.700 --> 00:01:49.760 So from the get-go, he's affectionately aimed towards them, that their hearts may be built up and encouraged. 00:01:49.760 --> 00:01:52.219 He says that they might be knit together in love. 00:01:52.219 --> 00:02:02.480 And I was reading that and thinking like, man, I don't know if I've ever felt that way or been directed with an affection like that towards someone I've never met. 00:02:02.480 --> 00:02:12.680 And he's trusting Epaphras, who planted and preached, you know, and cultivated this group of people that they're being built up. 00:02:12.740 --> preparing, I was really getting affected and drawn back to the basic principles of the gospel, 00:07:15.900 --> 00:07:21.660 which Paul, I think, is trying to encourage the church at Colossae with to start working through the text, I'd like to point out something. 00:07:34.459 --> 00:07:41.199 In most of your Bibles, if you have an ESV, they put a title, a headline that says, 00:07:41.259 --> 00:07:42.459 Alive in Christ. 00:07:42.459 --> 00:07:47.979 If you have different translations, you probably won't see it or maybe it's a different title or something. 00:07:48.279 --> 00:08:02.919 But I particularly love this title because it describes what a Christian actually is at its core. 00:08:02.920 --> 00:08:06.759 Someone who is alive, someone who is living. 00:08:07.620 --> 00:08:16.780 And there is, you know, you go through, you know, your Christian walk and you hear that all the time. 00:08:17.259 --> 00:08:27.819 But how many of us have, you know, gone to meetings and gatherings and been around other Christians and felt maybe dead, 00:08:27.819 --> 00:08:35.960 you know, or a sense of dullness, gone into different churches and had this lingering feeling. 00:08:36.100 --> 00:08:39.460 And the truth is that a Christian is someone who is alive. 00:08:40.240 --> 00:08:49.799 That is somebody who is alive with the life force, not of their own, but is said, titled, Are you living or being lived? 00:09:40.459 --> 00:09:44.199 And I decided to read a little bit of what he meant by that. 00:09:44.200 --> 00:09:48.379 But what he was saying is essentially like, do you have your own goals? 00:09:48.480 --> 00:09:49.500 Are you self-motivated? 00:09:49.580 --> 00:09:50.640 Are you self-disciplined? 00:09:50.879 --> 00:09:56.800 Or are you just trying to accomplish your company's goals and work for somebody else? 00:09:57.060 --> 00:09:59.480 Because if you are, my friend, you're being lived. 00:10:00.480 --> 00:10:01.780 You know, kind of a negative. 00:10:02.600 --> 00:10:04.180 Like, you need to get your own goals. 00:10:04.179 --> 00:10:15.500 Although there's some truth to that, I couldn't help but feel like in the inverse, as a Christian, we are a people who are being lived. 00:10:16.339 --> 00:10:23.219 Because our goals are now subordinated when we come to Christ. 00:10:23.220 --> 00:10:26.460 They're subjected to the king's goals. 00:10:27.240 --> 00:10:30.139 And we're being lived actually through God. 00:10:30.720 --> 00:10:34.680 And our life, we don't live anymore, Paul says, but we live by faith. 00:10:35.420 00:10:53.600 So, alive in Christ, living in Christ, being lived, seeing that, is what the aim is. 00:10:54.460 --> 00:11:05.700 And as we walk through this, I think noticing Paul's aliveness to this church, even though he hasn't even seen them, can be felt. 00:11:06.460 --> 00:11:09.240 So, we want to start in verse 6. 00:11:09.240 --> 00:11:15.480 We'll start to work through how Paul speaks to them. 00:11:16.200 --> 00:11:16.500 It says, 00:11:16.500 --> 00:11:29.279 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 00:11:29.879 --> 00:11:31.379 So, two things right away. 00:11:32.399 --> 00:11:37.360 Just as they received Christ Jesus the Lord, he tells them to wants them to be rooted and built up and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 00:14:39.740 --> 00:14:54.639 So he kind of ends it and tags it with this phrase, abounding in thanksgiving, which is important for us to know because it's easy to grow weary in giving thanks. 00:14:55.419 --> 00:15:02.100 And it's even more easy to grumble when there's many things we're tempted, we can remember Paul speaking to the Colossians, not just telling them to be thankful, but to abound in it. 00:15:20.100 --> 00:15:37.120 You know, not grumbling when we get frustrated about, you know, how someone's bad at facilitating family or group things or, you know, grumbling about whatever in our life is just inconvenient, you know. 00:15:37.220 --> 00:15:46.779 But constantly abounding, Godward, you know, not looking at our circumstances or other people by the flesh, but being thankful. 00:15:46.779 --> 00:15:50.220 Paul says to abound in it. 00:15:54.860 --> 00:16:10.100 With that, in verse 8, kind of leads them into a little bit of a warning or telling them to guard against something. 00:16:10.100 --> 00:16:24.460 He says, see to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. 00:16:25.620 --> 00:16:33.440 So although Paul is speaking to believers, he's, or believers that are standing firm in their faith, he's still giving them a sober warning. 00:16:33.440 --> 00:16:48.380 He says, watch out for the things that will sneak in, like this strange philosophy or a type of empty deceit, something that might be appealing, but its end is just emptiness. 00:16:48.960 --> 00:16:53.620 It's not going to, it won't help you, won't aid you. 00:16:53.620 --> 00:17:12.299 And I think the thing about, you know, this particular church and this group of people, I don't think like, okay, we're like really susceptible by these things
