And that is a marvel to us 00:06:15.979 --> 00:06:21.539 that you would redeem a people like us, that you would save a people like us, that our Lord and Saviour 00:06:21.539 --> 00:06:28.599 would come down into this world for a people like us and that he came not just to live and not just to 00:06:28.599 --> 00:06:36.639 endure hardship and hatred and rejection but specifically to endure the very pain, the very punishment of 00:06:36.639 --> 00:06:44.000 of that hell on the cross, that judgment that was endured. There we see the one who is the sin-bearer 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:52.339 himself, bearing the sins of his people. Help us to reflect daily on the cross. We know that 00:06:52.339 --> 00:06:59.279 such is the way our minds are, we can sometimes forget the magnitude of what was done for us there at 00:06:59.279 --> 00:07:08.559 Calvary. Sometimes we can be slow to remember, slow to think on the sacrifice of our Lord, but help us to 00:07:08.559 --> 00:07:15.179 do that daily, not just to wait for specific times and seasons like communions and other seasons such as 00:07:15.180 --> 00:07:24.139 that. But help us daily to reflect on what our Lord has done. And may that then affect our own 00:07:24.139 --> 00:07:32.480 hearts and spirit in this life as well. Because very often we can complain, very often we can fall into a 00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:38.680 spiritual slumber as well and we can fall into all sorts of bad habits. And we see that even in 00:07:38.680 --> 00:07:43.840 Scripture itself for the people of God, how often we see them falling into these sins and falling into 00:07:43.840 --> 00:07:51.639 these traits, traits which we absolutely replicate ourselves as well. And help us to spot that, to see 00:07:51.639 --> 00:07:57.600 that, and to seek your help for us to be lifted up out of that. And surely the answer in all these 00:07:57.600 --> 00:08:04.079 errors that we fall into is to look to Christ, to look to our Lord. So help us to do that. Even in this 00:08:04.079 --> 00:08:09.419 act of worship itself, help us to look to our Lord. Help us to look to the triune God himself, 00:08:09.620 --> 00:08:15.740 Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And help us to marvel at who you are, at who you reveal yourself 00:08:15.740 --> 00:08:23.279 to be in the pages of Scripture. Secondly, the scarlet cord. 00:30:32.179 --> 00:30:37.939 And thirdly, the blood-stained cross of Christ himself. 00:30:38.079 --> 00:30:41.980 So three very different images, 00:30:42.139 --> 00:30:46.359 and images that come from three very different parts of the Bible. 00:30:46.460 --> 00:30:51.599 Obviously, the blood-stained doorposts coming from that Exodus narrative. 00:30:51.779 --> 00:30:55.240 Then the scarlet cord, of course, coming from the Joshua narrative. 00:30:55.240 --> 00:31:01.160 And then the blood-stained cross of our Lord and Savior himself coming from the Gospel body's taken away, the cross, that blood-soaked cross of Christ, 00:31:29.559 --> 00:31:39.579 visually, there's a similarity between these three images that are presented to us in Scripture. 00:31:39.579 --> 00:31:42.339 And I don't mean just visually, as I mentioned earlier, 00:31:42.500 --> 00:31:44.619 also in terms of what these things communicate, 00:31:45.059 --> 00:31:47.579 and theologically how these things speak to us, 00:31:47.619 --> 00:31:49.899 and how we see something of the Gospel in these things. 00:31:49.960 --> 00:31:53.000 So what I want to do is really stop at each three of these images, 00:31:53.500 --> 00:31:57.119 to stand and to take in just the sight itself, 00:31:57.539 --> 00:32:01.079 and really to ask, what is it that these things convey to us, 00:32:01.199 --> 00:32:03.000 of the blood of Christ, of the Gospel, 00:32:03.220 --> 00:32:07.139 of the wonder of what our Lord and Savior has done for us. 00:32:07.140 --> 00:32:09.900 So let's do that, and we'll begin, 00:32:10.300 --> 00:32:15.000 the first one here, the blood-stained doorposts. 00:32:15.280 --> 00:32:17.220 So you're standing there, and we're just, as it were, 00:32:17.400 there, 00:32:34.339 --> 00:32:37.939 of God rescuing his people from Egypt. 00:32:38.039 --> 00:32:40.099 And you remember how that all unfolded. 00:32:40.139 --> 00:32:41.740 The Lord sends Moses in. 00:32:42.199 --> 00:32:44.220 So Moses comes in to Egypt, 00:32:44.220 --> 00:32:47.019 and then you have the ten plagues, of course. 00:32:47.500 --> 00:32:51.279 The ten plagues are unleashed on the Egyptians. 00:32:51.619 --> 00:32:53.159 And then you come to the last one, 00:32:53.599 --> 00:32:55.119 the tenth plague, 00:32:55.119 --> 00:32:58.099 which is really what this is all connected to here. 00:32:58.240 --> 00:33:00.459 And this was the plague that was going to result 00:33:00.460 --> 00:33:03.880 in a very solemn outcome, 00:33:04.000 --> 00:33:09.680 the death of the firstborn of every home in Egypt, 00:33:09.799 --> 00:33:13.259 except, of course, those who had the blood, 00:33:13.340 --> 00:33:14.980 the blood of the Passover lamb, 00:33:15.380 --> 00:33:17.400 actually applied to the doorposts, 00:33:17.400 --> 00:33:21.160 actually applied to the lintel of the households as well. 00:33:21.160 --> 00:33:26.319 And if the Lord came and saw the blood on the doorframe, 00:33:26.380 --> 00:33:28.480 if he saw the blood on the lintel, 00:33:28.539 --> 00:33:29.880 then, of course, he was going to Passover. 00:33:30.480 --> 00:33:35.140 There was not going to be a death taking place in that home. 00:33:35.260 --> 00:33:37.800 And when you read the section that we read there, 00:33:38.200 --> 00:33:41.280 and you look at some of the way in which it's described for us, 00:33:41.820 --> 00:33:45.040 the Lord is very deliberate in the description 00:33:45.040 --> 00:33:47.180 of how all this was meant to happen. 00:33:48.480 --> 00:33:49.720 He's very specific. 00:33:50.260 --> 00:33:51.800 He gives us specifics, you know, 00:33:51.860 --> 00:33:54.020 to do with how the blood was to be applied 00:33:54.020 --> 00:33:57.600 and various specifics about the actual Passover lamb as well. 00:33:57.860 --> 00:33:58.780 Now, why is that? 00:33:58.779 --> 00:34:00.119 Why are there... 00:34:00.119 --> 00:34:01.960 That's not just through here, of course. 00:34:02.000 --> 00:34:04.019 That's through for lots of parts of Scripture. 00:34:04.119 --> 00:34:05.180 But why is it through here? 00:34:05.619 --> 00:34:07.740 Why does he give us such specifics here? 00:34:07.980 --> 00:34:11.119 And the answer is very simply because all of these things, 00:34:11.219 --> 00:34:12.840 all of these details are communicating. 00:34:13.360 --> 00:34:15.500 The Lord is, in a visual way, 00:34:15.719 --> 00:34:19.259 speaking to us and communicating various things to us. 00:34:19.260 --> 00:34:24.420 And I think there's a lot of things that this scene before us here communicates. 00:34:24.480 --> 00:34:27.060 And when we look to this door frame 00:34:27.060 --> 00:34:30.280 and we see the blood on the lintel and the doorposts here, And the first thing I want to notice there is in verse 5 of this passage that we read there, 00:34:39.139 --> 00:34:42.839 and this is to do with the lamb from whom the blood was to come. 00:34:42.900 be our tendency if we were giving something. 00:34:59.079 --> 00:35:01.519 Let's just give the worst of what we might have. 00:35:01.519 --> 00:35:04.539 They were very specifically called to bring know what the reason for that is. 00:35:14.500 --> 00:35:18.559 The reason for that is because the Passover lamb was intended to point forward to Christ. 00:35:18.639 --> 00:35:22.159 It was very clearly, very specifically pointing forward to Christ. 00:35:22.159 --> 00:35:26.159 And as we know, Christ is one who is himself sinless. 00:35:26.320 --> 00:35:28.079 He is the spotless lamb of God. 00:35:41.679 And therefore, when you read these laws here, 00:35:41.699 --> 00:35:45.759 and when you read here about the unblemished lamb in the Exodus narrative, 00:35:45.920 --> 00:35:49.460 that's clearly there specifically to teach us about that, 00:35:49.460 --> 00:35:54.420 to teach us, to make us look forward to one who was going to come who was sinless, 00:35:54.420 --> 00:35:58.900 to point forward to this great Savior, the spotless lamb of God, 00:35:58.960 --> 00:36:02.059 who one day was going to come into the world. 00:36:02.159 --> 00:36:05.039 So there you have, looking at that scene, looking at that blood, 00:36:05.519 --> 00:36:07.159 it communicates that to us. 00:36:07.220 --> 00:36:11.800 It communicates the way in which this lamb was to be a lamb that was and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls, 00:37:10.439 --> 00:37:12.979 for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul. 00:37:12.980 --> 00:37:19.960 So specifically, for the life of the flesh is in the blood. 00:37:20.079 --> 00:37:26.460 So there's a very clear, very close tie between blood and life. 00:37:26.599 --> 00:37:28.539 And here, when you're looking at this scene, 00:37:29.079 --> 00:37:31.139 this blood on the doorpost here, 00:37:31.260 --> 00:37:32.800 that blood is a symbol, 00:37:33.340 --> 00:37:37.420 a symbol of a life that has been sacrificed, 00:37:37.679 --> 00:37:41.360 a life that has been sacrificed in order to make atonement. 00:37:41.360 --> 00:37:44.220 And that blood is applied to the very entrance, 00:37:44.599 --> 00:37:45.660 in a very visual way, 00:37:45.740 --> 00:37:48.559 the very entrance of the house itself. 00:37:48.640 --> 00:37:51.000 And the idea is that the Lord will pass over, 00:37:51.519 --> 00:37:54.340 and that the Lord will see the blood. 00:37:54.700 --> 00:37:57.599 And he'll see the blood of the Passover lamb, 00:37:58.059 --> 00:38:01.860 and because a life has already been taken, 00:38:02.340 --> 00:38:04.660 because there's already been a death, 00:38:04.720 --> 00:38:07.140 the sign of the blood is a sign of that life, 00:38:07.180 --> 00:38:08.260 has already been taken, 00:38:08.260 --> 00:38:11.840 again, a death has already occurred in this household, 00:38:12.120 --> 00:38:15.700 so therefore, there'll be no further death in this household.
