peace offerings before the Lord and there Saul and all the men of 00:03:30.300 --> 00:03:32.139 Israel rejoiced greatly. 00:03:34.439 --> 00:03:36.420 So we'll look at this story in three parts. 00:03:37.139 --> 00:03:38.539 First, the people are attacked. 00:03:39.199 --> 00:03:40.379 Then they're saved. 00:03:40.680 --> 00:03:42.039 And finally, they're rejoicing. 00:03:42.840 --> 00:03:43.740 Those are the three parts. 00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:44.780 So first, attacked. 00:03:44.780 --> 00:03:49.400 I wonder, have you ever felt like you are spiritually under attack? 00:03:50.620 --> 00:03:57.199 Now, I don't necessarily mean having a sort of freaky experience with ghosts or demons 00:03:57.199 --> 00:04:01.639 or dark forces, though perhaps that's been your experience at a time. 00:04:01.719 --> 00:04:06.080 But I wonder, have you ever faced what seems like a constant onslaught of temptation? 00:04:06.080 --> 00:04:12.560 Maybe it's the cravings of an addiction that wants to take over your life. 00:04:13.580 --> 00:04:17.400 Maybe it's a feeling of depression and despair that threatens to paralyze you. 00:04:18.379 --> 00:04:24.680 Maybe it's a constant pull toward a particular sin that you're vulnerable to, like explosive 00:04:24.680 --> 00:04:32.180 anger or unforgiving bitterness or raging lust or frantic anxiety. 00:04:32.180 --> 00:04:39.340 Maybe you've been part of a community that's been under attack, where it seems like you're 00:04:39.340 --> 00:04:45.360 constantly being pressured to conform to other people's standards or beaten down and discouraged 00:04:45.360 --> 00:04:49.120 and caught by surprise, and it just doesn't seem to let up. 00:04:50.680 --> 00:04:55.560 Well, that's the situation the Israelites found themselves in at the beginning of this passage. 00:04:56.500 --> 00:05:00.120 They were attacked by a fierce enemy, by Nahash the Ammonite. 00:05:00.120 --> 00:05:01.959 His name actually means serpent. 00:05:03.300 --> 00:05:09.660 He besieged Jabesh Gilead, which was a fortified city east of the Jordan River, sort of on the 00:05:09.660 --> 00:05:12.100 east side of Israel, and he offered the people a bad deal. 00:05:13.240 --> 00:05:20.040 He says, I'll make a treaty with you as long as I can gouge out all your right eyes, which 00:05:20.040 --> 00:05:27.139 basically would not only shame them, but would also permanently disable them and make them never 00:05:27.139 --> 00:05:28.139 able to fight again. 00:05:28.139 --> 00:05:33.279 They actually would, some scholars, there's some evidence that they would actually hold 00:05:33.279 --> 00:05:34.959 their shields up in front of their left eye. 00:05:35.399 --> 00:05:39.180 So if their right eye couldn't work, they wouldn't be able to fight at all. 00:05:41.079 --> 00:05:46.079 And some evidence indicates that he didn't just come against this one city, but he was sort 00:05:46.079 --> 00:05:51.419 of on a rampage through several cities east of the Jordan, gouging out people's eyes, 00:05:51.420 --> 00:05:54.319 pressuring the people, taking over their cities. 00:05:56.180 --> 00:05:59.960 And then the Israelites also had the Philistines on the west. 00:06:00.020 --> 00:06:03.500 So they were sort of caught between a rock and a hard place, between the Philistines on 00:06:03.500 --> 00:06:04.980 the west and the Ammonites on the east. 00:06:04.980 --> 00:06:08.500 They were under attack. 00:06:09.540 --> 00:06:13.660 Now at this time, the nation of Israel wasn't under a central government. 00:06:14.780 --> 00:06:16.879 So they didn't have a standing army. 00:06:17.600 --> 00:06:20.220 It was an association of tribes and independent cities. 00:06:20.939 --> 00:06:25.980 So we actually see the leaders here of this one city who were making their negotiations for 00:06:25.980 --> 00:06:27.700 a treaty with a foreign nation on their own. 00:06:27.699 --> 00:06:33.420 But on the other hand, even though each city had its own leaders, there were close bonds 00:06:33.420 --> 00:06:35.899 between all the Israelite tribes and cities. 00:06:36.560 --> 00:06:42.740 So verse 2, we see that when this guy Nahash is attacking Jabesh Gilead, he's not just attacking 00:06:42.740 --> 00:06:43.439 this one city. 00:06:43.539 --> 00:06:46.060 He says, I want to bring disgrace on all Israel. 00:06:47.599 --> 00:06:52.560 And verse 3, the elders of Jabesh, they didn't try to face their attackers alone. 00:06:52.939 --> 00:06:54.379 They reached out for help. 00:06:54.379 --> 00:07:01.079 They sent messengers through all the cities of Israel to see if anyone could save them 00:07:01.079 --> 00:07:03.540 when they couldn't save themselves. 00:07:05.379 --> 00:07:11.480 Now, interestingly, in many ways, the relationship between Jabesh Gilead and all the other cities 00:07:11.480 --> 00:07:18.540 of Israel is similar to our relationship as a local church with other local churches today. 00:07:18.540 --> 00:07:26.240 You know, particularly as a Baptist church, we're not under a sort of central government 00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:33.620 somewhere else that runs our church from some office in the capital of Connecticut or in D.C. 00:07:33.640 --> 00:07:34.100 or anywhere. 00:07:34.960 --> 00:07:40.840 Our local congregation is responsible for the decisions that we make, the members of our church. 00:07:40.839 --> 00:07:49.219 And so whether that's when we bought this building nine years ago or hiring staff or choosing 00:07:49.219 --> 00:07:54.019 leaders, choosing elders and deacons and other leaders in the church, as a church, we do that 00:07:54.019 --> 00:07:54.439 together. 00:07:55.500 --> 00:07:56.919 Nobody else does that for us. 00:07:56.959 --> 00:08:02.839 But on the other hand, being independent shouldn't mean being alone. 00:08:02.839 --> 00:08:09.179 And so we really value our relationships with other local churches, even though we don't 00:08:09.179 --> 00:08:13.019 run them and they don't run us, but we're brothers and sisters in Christ. 00:08:13.179 --> 00:08:18.139 And so as one of the pastors, I've spent some time over the last few years getting to know 00:08:18.139 --> 00:08:22.479 some of the other pastors in town, getting to know some of the other churches in this 00:08:22.479 --> 00:08:22.859 area. 00:08:23.079 --> 00:08:27.239 And that's something that we value and invest time into and look into how can we support 00:08:27.239 --> 00:08:27.679 one another? 00:08:27.680 --> 00:08:32.799 How can we get to know one another so that if somebody's having a real hard time, we can 00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:35.279 actually be there for each other because we know each other? 00:08:35.659 --> 00:08:39.759 If you don't even know each other exists, then you're never going to know when somebody 00:08:39.759 --> 00:08:41.519 else is facing a really hard time. 00:08:45.159 --> 00:08:46.720 So we want to do that. 00:08:47.139 --> 00:08:49.220 Sometimes we pray for other churches by name. 00:08:49.659 --> 00:08:51.539 We spend time with each other. 00:08:51.620 --> 00:08:56.440 The same principle applies to our relationships, one with another as believers. 00:08:57.679 --> 00:09:02.879 You know, when we stand before God on Judgment Day, each of us are going to be responsible 00:09:02.879 --> 00:09:06.239 before God for our own actions, for our own lives. 00:09:07.359 --> 00:09:12.079 But we're not meant to fight our battles alone, right? 00:09:12.139 --> 00:09:17.239 We're called together as a community so we can know each other, so we can love each other, 00:09:17.299 --> 00:09:18.699 so we can be there for each other. 00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:23.959 You know, but if you don't know the people, if you don't even know the people sitting in 00:09:23.960 --> 00:09:29.300 the row in front of you, you're not going to be able to be there for them or even know 00:09:29.300 --> 00:09:34.120 if they're fighting a hard battle spiritually. 00:09:35.560 --> 00:09:40.680 So one of the things we do in this church is we have small groups and we encourage people. 00:09:41.160 --> 00:09:46.440 Find a small group either here at Trinity or maybe if you live on a college campus with 00:09:46.440 --> 00:09:50.020 some of your friends on campus or in another place. 00:09:50.100 --> 00:09:55.200 Find some small group of Christian believers that you can pray with regularly, that you 00:09:55.200 --> 00:10:00.700 can study the Bible with, that you can encourage one another and stand with each other. 00:10:01.680 --> the enemy of our souls, like the people of Jabba 00:10:35.919 --> 00:10:37.599 Gilead were offered. 00:10:39.419 --> 00:10:41.139 But we should do what they did here. 00:10:41.719 --> 00:10:42.479 Send for help. 00:10:42.599 --> 00:10:43.279 Call for help. 00:10:44.259 --> 00:10:45.299 They called out for help. 00:10:45.379 --> 00:10:49.659 They sent messengers everywhere throughout all Israel and said, come help us. 00:10:50.379 --> 00:10:51.419 We're being attacked. 00:10:53.299 --> 00:10:55.299 So if you're being attacked, ask for prayer. 00:10:56.579 --> 00:11:04.099 Ask somebody to indifferent. 00:13:51.100 --> 00:13:55.580 They're sympathetic to the plight of their brothers and sisters. 00:13:55.580 --> 00:14:00.860 But on the other hand, I think it's not, it's also an insufficient response. 00:14:02.120 --> 00:14:13.879 Because if the people just wept and did nothing else, then seven days would pass, and the people of Jabba's Gilead would be in the same situation. 00:14:13.879 --> 00:14:30.620 You know, if someone comes to you and says, I really need some help, the first step might be to weep with them and give them a hug and comfort them. 00:14:31.700 --> that's a good first step, but it's not the only step. 00:14:44.379 --> 00:14:50.639 What Saul does, verse 5 and 6, he hears the report, and he's not just sympathetic, but he's indignant. 00:14:52.019 Holy Spirit makes you angry. 00:15:02.540 --> 00:15:03.660 Most of us don't think that. 00:15:03.659 --> 00:15:09.480 But he's angry, he's indignant, he's saying this must not happen. 00:15:10.019 --> It was going to be cut up in pieces gradually by their encroaching enemies. 00:16:13.600 --> 00:16:24.879 What he's saying is, if you don't stand up for your brothers and sisters who are facing
