00:09:29.160 --> 00:09:34.500 Well, back in the Old Testament, anointing was the smudging of oil on one's forehead, 00:09:34.740 --> 00:09:37.020 or the pouring out of oil on one's head. 00:09:37.019 --> 00:09:40.600 And what it was, was a way to set somebody apart. 00:09:42.500 --> 00:09:46.039 And so, priests were anointed in the Old Testament. 00:09:47.100 --> 00:09:55.000 But for our purposes this morning, we've got to realize that kings were anointed in the Old Testament. 00:09:56.460 --> 00:09:58.799 Do you remember 1 Samuel 16? 00:09:58.799 --> 00:10:01.599 Oh, it's such a great, great account. 00:10:03.899 --> 00:10:08.639 Saul, the first king of Israel, he just totally blundered and lost it. 00:10:09.279 --> 00:10:11.759 God was like, I'm giving the kingdom to somebody else. 00:10:12.620 --> 00:10:20.059 And so, in 1 Samuel 16, God calls the prophet Samuel to go to Bethlehem to Jesse's house. 00:10:20.059 --> 00:10:29.459 And he says to him in verse 1, fill your horn with oil, like an ox horn, fill your horn with oil, and go, 00:10:29.679 --> 00:10:34.579 for I have provided for myself, that's God speaking, a king among his sons. 00:10:37.059 --> 00:10:40.059 So, Samuel goes to Bethlehem. 00:10:41.079 --> 00:10:47.479 Goes to Jesse's house, and first he sees this firstborn son, Eliab. 00:10:47.480 --> 00:10:49.279 And he was dashing. 00:10:51.259 --> 00:10:54.300 And Samuel's like, surely this is God's anointed. 00:10:56.100 --> 00:10:58.159 And God, this is that classic response. 00:10:59.759 --> 00:11:01.740 Samuel, don't look at the outward appearance. 00:11:01.960 --> 00:11:03.519 God doesn't look at the outward appearance. 00:11:03.600 --> 00:11:04.379 He looks at the heart. 00:11:04.639 --> 00:11:11.220 And so, what happens is, the next six brothers in line come in front of Samuel and God saying, 00:11:11.680 --> 00:11:14.180 no, not that one, not that one, not that one, not that one. 00:11:14.379 --> 00:11:16.480 Eventually, there's no more brothers in the house. 00:11:16.480 --> 00:11:19.940 And so, Samuel's like, Jesse, do you got any more boys? 00:11:20.399 --> 00:11:22.240 And Jesse says, well, we got this one other boy. 00:11:22.340 --> 00:11:25.200 He's out, he's shepherding the sheep right now in the fields. 00:11:25.539 --> 00:11:27.120 And so, Samuel's like, why don't you go get them? 00:11:27.980 --> 00:11:30.820 Samuel, well, David comes back. 00:11:32.200 --> 00:11:41.460 And when he comes into his house, God says to Samuel, arise, anoint him, for this is he. 00:11:41.460 --> 00:11:47.780 Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him on the spot in the midst of his brothers. 00:11:49.360 --> 00:11:53.060 So, what I want you to see here is anointing and kingship. 00:11:54.259 --> 00:11:58.139 David was anointed king with oil. 00:11:58.139 --> 00:12:07.179 And eventually, what this anointing came to be is not just the anointing of a king, 00:12:07.600 --> 00:12:12.299 but eventually came to be associated with the anointed one. 00:12:13.039 --> 00:12:16.159 A coming king who would be the king of kings. 00:12:16.159 --> 00:12:19.120 The Messiah. 00:12:20.379 --> 00:12:21.360 The Christ. 00:12:22.319 --> 00:12:27.579 The one who would come and establish David's throne forever. 00:12:29.959 --> 00:12:33.279 He would bring with him the blessing of salvation. 00:12:33.480 --> 00:12:37.240 And so, when we look at Matthew 1, verse 1, if you look at that, 00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:40.059 you see the book of the genealogy of Jesus, 00:12:40.059 --> 00:12:47.199 Jesus, the anointed one, the Christ, the Messiah, the long-awaited king. 00:12:47.799 --> 00:12:51.599 And then he says, son of David, son of Abraham. 00:12:52.559 --> 00:12:59.859 And what Matthew is seeking to do is help us to see that the Christ is connected to Abraham and David 00:12:59.859 --> 00:13:01.639 in very important ways. 00:13:02.259 --> 00:13:04.199 And so, let's go there now. 00:13:05.239 --> 00:13:07.619 Christ is not the last name of Jesus. 00:13:07.620 --> 00:13:09.659 It is a kingly title. 00:13:10.139 --> 00:13:15.440 And so, what I want to help you to see now is how Christ is connected to Abraham. 00:13:18.519 --> 00:13:21.980 Abraham comes up a number of times in this genealogy. 00:13:22.159 --> 00:13:24.879 You see it in 1-1, the son of Abraham. 00:13:25.200 --> 00:13:28.919 You see it in 1-2, Abraham was the father of Isaac. 00:13:29.379 --> 00:13:32.279 And then you see it coming up again in verse 17. 00:13:32.879 --> 00:13:37.379 So, all the generations from Abraham to David were 14 generations. 00:13:37.620 --> 00:13:42.740 Abraham is a connection that Matthew is trying to help us to see here. 00:13:44.080 --> 00:13:50.419 On a very basic level, Matthew is showing us that Jesus of Nazareth was descendant from Abraham. 00:13:50.519 --> 00:13:51.060 He's a Jew. 00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:55.000 But there's something really more significant going on here. 00:13:55.940 --> 00:14:00.519 There's a bigger picture issue that is a plan for the fullness of time going on here. 00:14:00.519 --> 00:14:07.740 God has made, back in Genesis 12, he makes this huge promise to Abraham. 00:14:08.939 --> 00:14:16.360 He says that he is going to make Abraham, this is Genesis 12, 1-3. 00:14:16.600 --> 00:14:18.759 He's going to make a nation out of him. 00:14:19.139 --> 00:14:23.620 And then he's going to bless all the families of the earth through him. 00:14:23.620 --> 00:14:25.740 It's a huge promise. 00:14:26.480 --> 00:14:30.759 And when he talks about blessing, he's talking about not just making nice people. 00:14:31.220 --> 00:14:38.919 What he's talking about is salvation, redemption, reconciling sinners to himself. 00:14:40.039 --> 00:14:46.879 And so this blessing is a blessing for all people because all people need to be reconciled to God. 00:14:46.879 --> 00:14:48.799 All of us are sinners. 00:14:48.919 --> 00:14:50.500 There's not one exception. 00:14:52.439 --> 00:14:53.659 Except the Christ. 00:14:55.240 --> 00:14:59.220 But for those of us here, we're all sinners. 00:15:01.600 --> 00:15:09.840 And so God wants a plan from Genesis 12, even before that, to bless all nations through Abraham. 00:15:10.120 --> 00:15:13.700 To experience a right relationship with the one true living God. 00:15:13.700 --> 00:15:19.180 And by all nations, what he's talking about is not just Jews, but all Gentiles, everybody. 00:15:19.879 --> 00:15:21.180 A plan for the nations. 00:15:22.879 --> 00:15:26.460 So Genesis 12, we learn that God has this plan to bless the nations. 00:15:26.700 --> 00:15:29.840 And then in Genesis 22, God gets a little bit more specific. 00:15:30.480 --> 00:15:31.680 You remember Genesis 22? 00:15:32.120 --> 00:15:34.460 Abraham offers Isaac, his only son. 00:15:35.460 --> 00:15:42.620 And it's in that narrative that God gets even more specific with Abraham. 00:15:43.700 --> 00:15:52.580 He says not only is he going to bless all the nations, he's going to bless the nations through one particular offspring of Abraham. 00:15:56.420 --> 00:15:59.140 It's getting very, very specific. 00:16:00.379 --> 00:16:06.000 He goes from talking about a multitude of offspring to a particular offspring. 00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:07.960 So here's what I'm trying to help you to see. 00:16:08.299 --> 00:16:14.559 God's going to bless the nations with salvation through one particular offspring of Abraham. 00:16:16.179 --> 00:16:17.600 Who do you think that is?
