00:00:31.500 --> 00:00:37.179 But in this season of COVID, it's shown the value of patience. 00:00:37.960 --> 00:00:41.219 But there are still people trying to find quick fixes, 00:00:41.899 --> 00:00:45.960 even encouraging people to inject themselves with disinfectant. 00:00:46.939 --> 00:00:50.439 We are only now starting to come out of severe isolation 00:00:50.439 --> 00:00:54.179 because we, as a country, have had patience. 00:00:54.179 --> 00:00:59.899 We have valued other people more than ourselves by staying at home. 00:01:00.700 --> 00:01:04.840 And right now, we have showed the value of other people's lives 00:01:04.840 --> 00:01:09.460 by avoiding people, by staying at home, by not going to work, 00:01:09.539 --> 00:01:14.739 so that we can see lives saved and so that the country can reopen. 00:01:15.840 --> 00:01:18.439 Patience has been a great asset. 00:01:18.439 --> 00:01:24.359 And yet, it has also been a time of great impatience. 00:01:25.120 --> 00:01:29.060 For those with kids, impatient for school to return, 00:01:29.599 --> 00:01:31.319 impatient to hang out with friends, 00:01:31.739 --> 00:01:34.959 impatient to have the freedom to drive wherever we like, 00:01:35.340 --> 00:01:39.280 impatient to go and hang out with a friend or to go to the pub, 00:01:39.379 --> 00:01:40.719 impatient to go to the beach. 00:01:40.719 --> 00:01:47.659 But this has also been a season where we can be impatient with God. 00:01:48.620 --> 00:01:50.519 God, where are you? 00:01:50.579 --> 00:01:53.340 Why haven't you fixed this problem yet? 00:01:54.539 --> 00:01:56.260 And the question for us today is, 00:01:56.400 --> 00:02:00.460 does this season lead us closer to God 00:02:00.460 --> 00:02:04.819 or is our impatience driving us away from Him? 00:02:04.819 --> 00:02:12.519 Today, we are continuing in our series looking at the Old Testament minor prophet Habakkuk 00:02:12.519 --> 00:02:15.400 and his short book for us. 00:02:15.959 --> 00:02:18.400 Last week, we looked at the first chapter with Steve 00:02:18.400 --> 00:02:23.659 and we saw Habakkuk crying out because of the violence and injustice 00:02:23.659 --> 00:02:26.439 that God's people were doing to each other. 00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:29.659 And God had some radical words for Habakkuk. 00:02:29.659 --> 00:02:34.639 I am going to send Babylon and they are going to bring violence 00:02:34.639 --> 00:02:37.859 and injustice and oppression against Judah. 00:02:39.359 --> 00:02:41.019 And Habakkuk cried out in response, 00:02:41.319 --> 00:02:42.359 how could you do that? 00:02:43.460 --> 00:02:48.079 How can you use those evil people to judge your people, God? 00:02:48.379 --> 00:02:49.539 They're even worse. 00:02:50.979 --> 00:02:55.840 And Habakkuk is trying to understand how a pure and holy God 00:02:55.840 --> 00:03:00.200 can allow a sinful people to come and attack God's people. 00:03:01.400 --> 00:03:03.659 And this is where we find Habakkuk today. 00:03:04.500 --> 00:03:05.819 He has cried out to God. 00:03:06.819 --> 00:03:10.520 God has answered him and Habakkuk was not satisfied. 00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:13.980 He has called out to God again. 00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:18.780 And now we see Habakkuk waiting for a response. 00:03:19.719 --> 00:03:24.280 And today we're going to see what patience actually looks like. 00:03:24.280 --> 00:04:23.360 --> 00:04:26.459 He's expressed his concern about the coming Babylonian army. 00:04:27.240 --> 00:04:29.599 And now he is going to wait. 00:04:30.420 --> 00:04:34.779 He takes his concern to God and now he shows his patience. 00:04:34.779 --> 00:04:40.159 Habakkuk paints this picture of patience before God 00:04:40.159 --> 00:04:43.199 like a century on a watchtower. 00:04:43.659 --> 00:04:47.719 Imagine you've got a walled city which has towers 00:04:47.719 --> 00:04:51.819 and you have centuries, the watchmen, on these towers. 00:04:52.359 --> 00:04:54.119 And they're watching out for attacks. 00:04:54.639 --> 00:04:56.079 They're watching out for visitors. 00:04:56.759 --> 00:04:58.579 And you have to stay there your whole shift. 00:04:58.579 --> 00:05:04.719 And if the watchman takes his eye off the area he's supposed to be looking at, 00:05:04.919 --> 00:05:06.779 he could miss an invading force. 00:05:07.500 --> 00:05:08.839 He could miss people. 00:05:09.240 --> 00:05:11.800 And they could not be prepared to defend the city. 00:05:13.039 --> 00:05:18.439 Being a century on a watchtower requires immense patience. 00:05:19.299 --> 00:05:20.479 And this is a 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:13.719 But he is putting God's timing before his own. 00:08:14.839 --> 00:08:16.539 This is what Habakkuk is doing. 00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:17.259 He's waiting. 00:08:17.799 --> 00:08:19.519 He is watching with persistence. 00:08:20.199 --> 00:08:24.139 He has full confidence that God is going to answer his prayer. 00:08:24.419 --> 00:08:27.799 It's just a matter of having patience and waiting on God. 00:08:28.919 --> 00:08:33.860 Let's not continue to say that we are either people who have patience or don't have patience. 00:08:33.860 --> 00:08:38.340 But let us be 00:09:11.159 --> 00:09:13.219 Patience with God is actively saying, 00:09:13.220 --> 00:09:15.500 God, you are God. 00:09:15.639 --> 00:09:17.160 You are sovereign. 00:09:18.139 --> 00:09:21.139 And things happen in your time and not mine. 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:24.500 So let me encourage you to ask yourself, 00:09:24.879 --> 00:09:27.200 how do you need to be patient today? 00:09:28.160 --> online frustrating world where we have Zoom meetings? 00:09:51.900 --> 00:09:54.180 And we need to require on people. 00:09:54.179 --> 00:09:58.059 And we can't just ask them for things and everything 00:10:31.259 For the revelation awaits an appointed time. 00:10:31.519 --> 00:10:33.799 It speaks of the end and will not prove false. 00:10:34.419 --> 00:10:37.219 Though it linger, wait for it. chopping knife as dinner's being prepared. 00:12:55.200 --> 00:12:59.600 Because as they say every day, half an hour before dinner, I am starving. 00:13:00.280 --> 00:13:01.879 There will never be any 00:18:42.599 It's like we say, you know, they're full of hot air. 00:18:43.139 --> 00:18:49.919 It's like they're a balloon that is filled up too high and they're ready for the slightest prick to burst. 00:18:51.259 --> 00:18:54.759 They are swollen with pride and self-arrogance. 00:18:54.759 --> 00:19:06.180 On view here is the Babylonian army who is self-righteous, seeking their own ends, leading to pride and sinful acts and ultimately their death. 00:19:07.480 --> 00:19:14.559 But it's not stated, but it's implied that the righteous will live, but the puffed up they will not. 00:19:14.559 --> 00:19:26.440 On view here is at least the Babylonian army, but also anyone who is puffed up and thinks too highly of themselves and their own opinion before God. 00:19:27.379 --> 00:19:34.539 God is holding out to Judah that they can have life even though there is an army coming towards them. 00:19:34.539 --> 00:19:42.960 God will vindicate his people by giving them life, life
