Our text for today will be, again, John chapter 1, verses 14 through 18. And yes, we're doing a part two expositional sermon on Mother's Day. 00:00:24.679 --> 00:00:42.480 Because, yep. Last week we began a look at verses 14 through 18, which we didn't quite complete. So today we have the privilege of setting our minds once again on the incarnation of Jesus Christ. 00:00:42.479 --> 00:00:52.640 It's not just a thing to be done at Christmas time. The word incarnation originates in Latin and means literally in flesh. 00:00:53.339 --> 00:01:04.340 It is most regularly used to speak of the embodiment of a deity. Christians most regularly refer to Jesus' incarnation as the incarnation. 00:01:04.340 --> 00:01:13.320 Because it is not understood to be one amongst many, but to be the only time that deity took on humanity. 00:01:14.500 --> 00:01:21.240 Last week I hope that I clearly established that the errors concerning the incarnation are plentiful. 00:01:21.820 --> 00:01:31.200 Which means that this doctrine is incredibly important to the Christian faith and to understand its nature accurately deserves our careful attention. 00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:37.200 We had time last week for the first two of not in any way lay aside his divine attributes. 00:03:37.139 --> 00:03:42.159 Fifth, the person of the Son is the subject of both natures. 00:03:42.659 --> 00:03:43.639 Hear me here carefully. 00:03:43.819 --> 00:03:46.979 Jesus is not two persons or a split consciousness. 00:03:46.979 --> 00:03:54.599 The eternal Son is the acting subject of both divine and human experiences. 00:03:55.659 --> 00:04:03.939 So, like I said before, hungered as a man, forgave sins as God, yet always the Son of God. 00:04:04.799 --> 00:04:09.659 And then lastly, the incarnation was for our salvation. 00:04:10.159 --> 00:04:11.599 It was purposeful. 00:04:11.599 --> 00:04:22.019 Jesus became man, not merely to reveal God, but to redeem sinners through his substitutionary death and victorious resurrection. 00:04:22.879 --> 00:04:28.680 The unity of his person ensures the efficacy of his work. 00:04:28.759 --> 00:04:35.399 It means that the thing he came to do was, in fact, accomplished because of who he is. 00:04:35.699 --> 00:04:39.259 And we'll have more on this in today's concluding point. 00:04:39.259 --> 00:04:48.339 Then, in considering the second point, we took a brief look at John the Apostle's insertion in verse 15. 00:04:48.740 --> 00:04:53.500 Translators put it in parentheses, so it's a parenthetical insertion. 00:04:54.300 --> 00:05:01.839 When John the Apostle wrote his gospel, there was still a group that claimed John the Baptist as the Messiah. 00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:06.639 John makes clear in verses 7 and 8 that John the Baptist was not the Christ. 00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:13.279 And he does so again here in verse 15, but this time in John's own words. 00:05:14.219 --> 00:05:15.240 John the Baptist said, 00:05:15.539 --> 00:05:17.339 This was he of whom I said, 00:05:17.939 --> 00:05:23.519 He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me. 00:05:24.500 --> 00:05:34.360 John the Baptist acknowledged the supremacy of Jesus Christ and boldly proclaimed so by appealing to his eternal pre-existence. 00:05:34.360 --> 00:05:39.460 In some small measure, this catches us up. 00:05:40.400 --> 00:05:50.360 So, let's read our text in its entirety and turn our attention to the final point, which is the accomplishment of the Incarnation. 00:05:51.100 --> 00:05:55.259 What is it that the Incarnation set about to accomplish? beloved, that this is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good, 00:06:09.020 --> 00:06:16.020 that we might believe its promises, obey its commands, have affection for its author. from the end of verse 14. 00:07:28.399 --> 00:07:33.560 There he said that Jesus is full of grace and truth. 00:07:33.560 --> 00:07:40.560 In verse 14, John uses the adjective full in describing Jesus. 00:07:41.319 --> 00:07:41.800 Full. 00:07:41.939 --> 00:07:48.120 That is, he is filled up with grace and truth. 00:07:49.060 --> 00:07:56.540 The Greek word translated grace in these verses is --> 00:08:33.819 Although it is only used in this place, the repetition of it suggests that we should not neglect it as it is an important idea in the framing of John's account. 00:08:34.740 --> word for truth represents firmness, stability, steadfastness, or trustworthiness. 00:09:06.480 --> 00:09:11.480 John's Hebrew readers would have understood the Greek word. 00:09:11.480 --> 00:09:23.259 John's Hebrew readers would have understood the Greek word he uses, aletheia, in the same way as their Greek translation of what we call the Old Testament would have used this very same word. 00:09:23.259 --> 00:09:29.980 So they understood it as firmness, stability, steadfastness, or trustworthiness. 00:09:31.059 --> 00:09:41.840 Among Greeks, the word aletheia denotes that which
