00:00:36.140 --> 00:00:43.299 And if you are a Christian, that shouldn't sound too outrageous or new or groundbreaking. 00:00:43.759 --> 00:00:45.840 In many ways, this is the heart of our faith. want to put it to us that the reason we need to constantly think about this is because of the cultural waters that we swim in. 00:01:09.579 --> 00:01:12.859 Partly, I guess, our human heart, but also --> 00:01:23.659 The triathletes, I think, we're going to swim in the Seine as part of the race, right? 00:01:23.719 --> 00:01:25.019 The swimming leg. 00:01:25.640 --> 00:01:31.260 And there was all this controversy because the level of toxins, E. coli toxins in the Seine was too high. 00:01:31.579 --> 00:01:32.920 And it was dangerous for the swimmers. 00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:35.020 And so they kept on pushing it out a few days. 00:01:35.420 --> 00:01:37.460 And they're pushing out this race, right? 00:01:37.459 --> 00:01:46.379 And the reason is even though the Seine looks very beautiful and lovely and in hot summer months, you feel like you just want to dive in there and cool off. 00:01:46.699 --> 00:01:53.139 Actually, there are these invisible toxins that if you swallow them or the Moses' final sermon before we go into the promised land. 00:04:16.379 --> 00:04:19.360 He's constantly saying, remember God. 00:04:19.480 --> 00:04:20.680 Remember His faithfulness. 00:04:20.800 --> 00:04:21.819 Remember His promises. 00:04:22.379 --> 00:04:23.600 Remember how He's led us. 00:04:23.699 --> 00:04:24.699 Remember His covenants. 00:04:24.800 --> 00:04:25.740 Remember His statutes. 00:04:25.819 --> 00:04:27.139 Look at what He says in Deuteronomy 4. 00:04:27.379 --> 00:04:29.620 The Lord your God loved your fathers. 00:04:29.740 --> 00:04:30.680 This is verse 37. 00:04:30.680 --> 00:04:35.019 He brought you out of Egypt by His own presence, by His great power. 00:04:35.540 --> 00:04:42.040 Driving out the nations greater and mightier than you to bring you into this land as it is this day. 00:04:42.459 --> 00:04:49.420 Therefore, know today, lay it onto your heart that the Lord your God is in heaven above and on earth beneath. 00:04:49.560 --> 00:04:50.960 There is no to your forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, with good cities, great cities that you didn't build and houses full of good things that you didn't fill and cisterns that you did not dig and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant. 00:05:55.480 --> 00:06:05.380 When you eat and are full and satisfied, take care lest you forget the Lord your God, the one who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 00:06:05.380 --> 00:06:07.400 It is the Lord your God you shall fear. 00:06:07.399 --> 00:06:14.219 And so throughout the Bible, God's saying, don't forget, don't become self-reliant, self-dependent. 00:06:14.339 --> 00:06:21.139 Okay, so to help us think about this a bit more, I want us to look at a story in the Old Testament, which is one of my favorite stories. here is the story of this guy called Naaman the Syrian. 00:07:20.759 --> 00:07:26.219 Okay, and if you're reading the Watermark Bible reading plan, we're going to read 2 Kings 5 this week, I think. a real bother to Israel. 00:07:44.240 --> 00:07:46.199 And so in verse 1 we read this. 00:07:46.960 --> 00:07:50.900 Naaman is the commander of the army of the king of Syria. 00:07:51.500 --> 00:07:55.019 He was a great man with his master and in high favor. 00:07:55.600 --> 00:07:58.460 Because by him the Lord had given victory to Syria. 00:07:58.980 --> 00:08:01.620 He was a mighty man of valor. 00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:03.460 Okay, so who is Naaman? 00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:07.100 Naaman is the commander of the army of Syria. 00:08:07.280 --> 00:08:08.600 Okay, he's a very powerful man. 00:08:08.680 --> 00:08:09.900 He's a very influential man. 00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:11.759 He's probably a wealthy man. 00:08:11.759 --> 00:08:14.699 He's attained high status in society. 00:08:15.439 --> 00:08:17.639 He's a very important position of society. 00:08:17.879 --> 00:08:20.740 He has great authority, great influence. 00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:22.420 Maybe he's very feared. 00:08:22.759 --> 00:08:24.120 People, everybody knows. 00:08:24.920 --> 00:08:27.379 His number plate is number one in Syria. 00:08:27.680 --> 00:08:28.800 Okay, what is that word? 00:08:29.139 --> the most powerful man and probably the most powerful army in the modern world in that day and age. 00:09:02.379 --> 00:09:02.559 Right? 00:09:02.559 --> 00:09:04.239 But he has a problem. 00:09:04.639 --> 00:09:05.719 Look at the end of verse one. 00:09:06.219 --> 00:09:09.319 He's a mighty man of valor, but he is a leper. 00:09:10.039 --> 00:09:11.359 He suffers from leprosy. 00:09:12.059 --> 00:09:14.699 Leprosy in the old days, it could have been leprosy as we know. 00:09:14.779 --> 00:09:16.279 It could have been any other skin disease. 00:09:16.659 --> 00:09:18.659 In other words, he's a very sick man. 00:09:19.319 --> 00:09:20.759 Things are not going well for him. 00:09:21.339 --> 00:09:23.739 Maybe it is leprosy as we know. 00:09:23.859 --> 00:09:28.339 His body is going to fall apart slowly, limb by limb. 00:09:28.819 --> 00:09:29.859 There is no cure. 00:09:29.860 --> 00:09:34.480 His body is going to waste away until eventually his body gives up and he's going to die. 00:09:34.620 --> 00:09:35.940 So he's an unhealthy man. 00:09:36.860 --> 00:09:40.039 But God in his kindness has provided a way for him to get healed. 00:09:40.139 --> 00:09:40.800 Look at verse two. 00:09:41.560 --> 00:09:45.940 Now the Syrians in one of their raids had carried a little girl from the land of Israel. 00:09:46.340 --> 00:09:49.399 And she worked in the service of Naaman's wife. 00:09:50.120 --> 00:09:51.360 She said to her mistress, 00:09:51.360 --> 00:09:55.539 Would that my lord Naaman were with the prophet who is in Samaria. 00:09:55.740 --> 00:09:57.740 He would cure him of his leprosy. 00:09:58.300 --> 00:09:59.100 Okay, so that's amazing. 00:09:59.700 --> 00:10:01.100 Syria goes to attack Israel. 00:10:01.680 --> 00:10:03.899 They, I guess like happened a year ago, 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:06.060 they take a whole lot of people as hostages. 00:10:06.639 --> 00:10:11.019 Here they take a little girl, a young girl, back to Syria as a, 00:10:11.440 --> 00:10:12.840 they traffic her, right? 00:10:12.840 --> 00:10:17.620 And now she's working in the house of Naaman's wife as a servant. 00:10:18.440 --> 00:10:21.860 And she, rather than resenting Naaman and says, 00:10:21.940 --> 00:10:23.740 Oh, this is God getting back at him. 00:10:24.259 --> 00:10:25.720 She decides to help him. 00:10:25.840 --> 00:10:26.780 She offers a suggestion. 00:10:26.980 --> 00:10:27.379 She says, 00:10:27.700 --> 00:10:31.000 Naaman needs to go to Israel and find the prophet Elisha. 00:10:31.379 --> 00:10:33.259 He will cure him of his sickness. 00:10:34.040 --> 00:10:35.139 I mean, that's amazing grace. 00:10:35.259 --> 00:10:36.860 I would not want to say anything like that, 00:10:36.960 --> 00:10:38.879 but that's amazing grace. 00:10:38.879 --> 00:10:41.139 But what's amazing here is, 00:10:41.600 --> 00:10:43.019 here is a young girl. 00:10:43.840 --> 00:10:45.220 She's never commanded an army. 00:10:45.899 --> 00:10:48.779 She doesn't have the ear of the king as Naaman does. 00:10:49.139 --> 00:10:50.879 She's not powerful and influential. 00:10:51.019 --> 00:10:52.500 She's just a simple young girl. 00:10:52.899 --> 00:10:54.179 We don't even know her name. 00:10:54.399 --> 00:10:56.659 She's never accomplished anything great in her life. 00:10:57.299 --> 00:10:59.980 Yet she knows something that Naaman, 00:11:00.139 --> 00:11:03.279 for all his education, all his status, all his prestige, 00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:04.700 all his success, 00:11:04.820 --> 00:11:06.460 she knows something that he doesn't know. 00:11:06.460 --> 00:11:09.040 She knows what really matters. 00:11:09.500 --> 00:11:12.660 Because she knows who the one true God is. 00:11:13.240 --> 00:11:15.060 She knows nothing's impossible for
