unbelief and even the occult and finally even agnosticism. 00:01:21.819 --> 00:01:26.280 Tonight, we're going to see a totally different lineage of people who love the Lord, 00:01:26.420 --> 00:01:30.060 people who were soul winners, people who were martyrs. 00:01:30.060 --> 00:01:32.460 And let's follow tonight. 00:01:32.640 --> 00:01:38.040 First of all, the traditional text, the traditional received text. 00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:42.640 And then we'll get into more recent history as we get closer in history. 00:01:42.640 --> 00:01:50.140 But there is evidence of the received text, the traditional text going back to the earliest days of Christianity. 00:01:50.140 --> 00:01:55.719 Of course, these folks say that they're based on the oldest and best manuscripts, 00:01:55.939 --> 00:01:58.359 which really is not true, as we saw the other day. 00:01:58.960 --> 00:02:05.099 But after World War II, a man was in Egypt exploring, 00:02:05.799 --> 00:02:13.340 and he came across a manuscript, a portion, a fragment of a manuscript that was called papyri. 00:02:13.439 --> 00:02:17.379 Now, I'm sure you don't use that word very often, but it refers to papyrus, 00:02:17.379 --> 00:02:24.299 which was a type of plant that was woven into a very crude type of paper back in biblical times. 00:02:25.199 --> 00:02:29.079 And because it was basically a paper-type product, it did not last. 00:02:29.159 --> 00:02:34.919 But in the dry, hot sands of Egypt, several of these old manuscripts were preserved. 00:02:35.419 --> 00:02:41.199 One was called the Bodmer papyri, and it contains portions of the Gospel of John 00:02:41.199 --> 00:02:44.039 that are distinctive to the traditional text. 00:02:44.039 --> 00:02:48.359 And that papyri, or that document, dated to the year 125. 00:02:50.639 --> 00:02:53.979 That's not far after the death of the Apostle John. 00:02:55.199 --> 00:03:03.539 Similarly, another ancient papyri was found after World War II, which dated to the Irenaeus, Tertullian, Cyprian, Ignatius, Hippolytus, and others in the second century. 00:03:28.500 --> 00:03:32.300 Now, the second century is the century that began with the year 100. 00:03:33.319 --> 00:03:38.740 They were quoting texts that are distinctive to the traditional text, 00:03:38.900 --> 00:03:40.960 and of course that is where the King James Bible is based. 00:03:40.960 --> 00:03:50.100 And so there is substantial historical evidence going back to the earliest days of Christianity. 00:03:50.920 --> 00:03:57.080 And we touched just briefly, I think Sunday, maybe Monday, I forget which day. 00:03:57.560 --> 00:04:00.280 But touched just briefly on some of the early translations. 00:04:01.100 --> 00:04:06.280 God saw to it that his word was translated into the common languages, 00:04:06.280 --> 00:04:10.599 the vernacular languages that most people spoke down through the ages. 00:04:10.939 --> 00:04:16.240 And the first translation that we are aware of, of the New Testament, 00:04:16.740 --> 00:04:18.800 was called the Peshitta translation. 00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:20.439 That is a Syrian word. 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:25.339 The Peshitta translation was sponsored by the church at Antioch. 00:04:25.879 --> 00:04:29.620 You'll recall that the church at Antioch was the ascending church, 00:04:29.620 --> 00:04:32.840 the home church of the Apostle Paul when he went out on his missionary journeys. 00:04:33.379 --> 00:04:38.800 Early and very early in New Testament history, the church at Jerusalem had come under great persecution. 00:04:38.959 --> 00:04:40.620 We read about that in Acts chapter 11. 00:04:40.620 --> 00:04:50.500 And also because of a great economic depression, many of the believers fled from Jerusalem up to Antioch. 00:04:50.579 --> 00:04:59.139 And it became the central church, the leadership church in the second century, 00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:01.019 the end of the first and end of the second century. 00:05:01.019 --> 00:05:09.939 Anyway, in the year 150, the Syrian churches led by the church at Antioch produced a translation, 00:05:10.159 --> 00:05:13.379 sometimes called the Syriac translation, which means in Syrian. 00:05:13.899 --> 00:05:18.740 But its title was Peshitta, which in Syrian means just the basic translation. 00:05:20.319 --> 00:05:29.379 And the Syrian church leaders today say that the Peshitta can be traced back to the beginning of Christianity. 00:05:29.379 --> 00:05:34.579 We have more conservative scholars will say it was produced in the year 150. 00:05:35.139 --> 00:05:36.279 But that's very, very early. 00:05:36.339 --> 00:05:42.120 But what's distinctive about the Peshitta translation is that it follows the traditional text. 00:05:42.579 --> 00:05:46.319 And as I said the other day, folks, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out 00:05:46.319 --> 00:05:52.360 that if a translation follows the traditional text, it was translated from the traditional text. 00:05:52.860 --> 00:05:53.719 It existed. 00:05:54.259 --> 00:05:55.759 That was the New Testament. 00:05:55.759 --> 00:05:58.480 That was the word of God in that era. 00:05:59.379 --> 00:06:05.860 Well, coming just about seven years later, in northern Italy, a group of churches known as the Italic churches, 00:06:06.579 --> 00:06:09.300 they had nothing to do with the Roman church. 00:06:10.439 --> 00:06:14.540 And as I mentioned the other day, the Catholic church hadn't even been invented yet, as it were. 00:06:14.939 --> 00:06:18.060 That didn't really develop until into the fourth century. 00:06:18.420 --> 00:06:19.779 So the Catholics would dispute that. 00:06:19.779 --> 00:06:25.839 I got into a discussion, a very good discussion the other night with a gentleman here about the birth of the Catholic church. 00:06:26.199 --> 00:06:27.199 He wasn't arguing about it. 00:06:27.199 --> 00:06:28.479 He just had questions about it. 00:06:28.759 --> 00:06:30.519 But they will tell you, it goes back to Peter. 00:06:30.599 --> 00:06:32.139 I don't want to get off on that, Brother Smith. 00:06:32.979 --> 00:06:40.619 But anyway, the Italic churches in the year 157 produced a translation in Old Latin. 00:06:40.620 --> 00:06:47.759 And it was based, and it follows the traditional text of the New Testament, the received text. 00:06:48.639 --> 00:06:50.280 It was the working text. 00:06:50.399 --> 00:06:56.740 I mean, this is powerful, powerful evidence of which text is correct, the traditional text or the critical text. 00:06:56.740 --> 00:07:06.480 In the year 350, a missionary in southeastern Europe by the name of Uphilus. 00:07:06.560 --> 00:07:07.920 How do you like to have that for a last name? 00:07:09.420 --> 00:07:12.060 And you go to kindergarten and say, spell your last name. 00:07:12.980 --> 00:07:21.439 But anyway, a man by the name of Uphilus on the field in southwestern Germany produced a translation of the New Testament 00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:27.240 in the Gothic language, which was the language of much of Eastern Europe at that time. 00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:29.800 It follows the traditional text. 00:07:29.879 --> 00:07:38.639 And incidentally, there is still a copy of the Gothic translation at the University of Uppsala, Sweden, 00:07:38.759 --> 00:07:41.680 one of the city's universities there in the nation of Sweden. 00:07:42.319 --> 00:07:45.220 It also follows the traditional text. 00:07:45.220 --> 00:07:51.000 A missionary on the field without access to libraries and things you might find in the big cities, 00:07:51.439 --> 00:07:52.259 the big churches. 00:07:52.399 --> 00:07:56.480 But he translates, and it's clear he's working from the traditional received text. 00:07:56.719 --> 00:08:03.259 Again, this is powerful, powerful evidence of the validity and the integrity of the traditional text. 00:08:03.339 --> 00:08:05.839 And there are other ancient translations as well. 00:08:06.300 --> 00:08:10.899 But moving a little bit forward into history, in the year 1453, 00:08:12.279 --> 00:08:16.680 Constantinople, which was the headquarters of the Eastern Empire, the Greek Empire, 00:08:16.680 --> 00:08:24.060 of the Roman Empire, I should say, in 1453, Constantinople fell to the Muslims. 00:08:24.819 --> 00:08:27.759 And they overran that region of the world. 00:08:28.500 --> 00:08:32.620 And as you know, the Muslims usually were not kindly disposed to Christianity. 00:08:32.620 --> 00:08:42.399 And so many Greek spiritual leaders fled from Greece up into Central Europe, 00:08:42.399 --> 00:08:47.720 and they took with them many manuscripts of the New Testament. 00:08:48.659 --> 00:08:54.080 These were largely produced at a place called Mount Athos, which is just south of Thessalonica, 00:08:54.700 --> 00:08:58.379 where there, to this day, are numerous scriptoriums where they copy the scriptures. 00:08:58.379 --> 00:09:01.600 They sometimes are called the Byzantine text. 00:09:02.059 --> 00:09:04.259 It's another synonym for the received text. 00:09:05.480 --> 00:09:10.799 But anyway, so now the Greek New Testament manuscripts are in Central Europe. 00:09:11.679 --> 00:09:17.740 In the year 1440, a German goldsmith by the name of Gutenberg 00:09:17.740 --> 00:09:22.340 invented the movable type printing press and revolutionized it, 00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:26.240 and really brought on not only the Reformation, but the Renaissance. 00:09:26.240 --> 00:09:33.440 And so in the year, the early 1500s, which would be the early 16th century, 00:09:34.180 --> 00:09:40.279 a Catholic scholar by the name of Erasmus, there had not been any Reformation yet. 00:09:40.360 --> 00:09:42.139 There were not any Protestants yet. 00:09:42.919 --> 00:09:49.620 But a scholar in Europe by the name of Erasmus began studying the Greek New Testament. 00:09:49.620 --> 00:09:58.039 And little by little, his first name was Desiderius, Erasmus was converted. 00:09:58.480 --> 00:09:59.740 He became a born-again Christian. 00:10:00.740 --> 00:10:04.179 And he became intrigued with publishing the New Testament. 00:10:04.899 --> 00:10:10.080 And so now with the advent of printing, in the year 1516, 00:10:10.600 --> 00:10:15.680 Erasmus, as I mentioned the other day, did something that had never been done before in human history. 00:10:15.679 --> 00:10:19.319 And that is that he put the New Testament into print. 00:10:19.899 --> 00:10:23.419 Now this is a recent edition of it, but this is basically Erasmus' text. 00:10:24.179 --> 00:10:28.359 He took the New Testament in Greek and printed it. 00:10:30.279 --> 00:10:34.539 The first one to publish the Word of God in printed form. 00:10:35.059 --> 00:10:38.459 And it began to go all over Europe. 00:10:38.460 --> 00:10:48.160 Now, over a span of 20 years, Erasmus not only became a Christian, a true Christian, a born-again Christian, 00:10:48.480 --> 00:10:52.600 but toward the end of his career, as he continued to study the New Testament, 00:10:53.220 --> 00:10:57.920 the man became very closely aligned with the Anabaptists in Central Europe. 00:10:58.680 --> 00:11:01.460 Now the Anabaptists are our historical forerunner. 00:11:01.460 --> 00:11:03.139 The word Anabaptists means re- 00:11:03.139 --> 00:11:09.180 And then tacked down to the preface, Anna, to the word Baptist, it means re-baptizers. 00:11:10.259 --> 00:11:12.700 And, by the way, it was a pejorative term. 00:11:13.420 --> 00:11:17.200 People who had been sprinkled as a Catholic, and then they got saved, 00:11:17.280 --> 00:11:19.580 and then they went down to the local river and were immersed, 00:11:19.960 --> 00:11:21.940 they called them re-baptizers. 00:11:23.240 --> 00:11:24.460 It was not a compliment. 00:11:24.460 --> 00:11:30.379 But, Erasmus came to a Baptist position in his writings. 00:11:30.519 --> 00:11:36.080 He talked about, after a person is saved, then he follows the Lord in the water of baptism 00:11:36.080 --> 00:11:38.180 by immersion as a public testimony. 00:11:38.300 --> 00:11:39.460 Folks, that's Baptist doctrine. 00:11:40.420 --> 00:11:45.420 And there was communication between him and Balthasar Hubmeyer, 00:11:45.500 --> 00:11:47.540 who was one of the leaders of the Anabaptist movement. 00:11:47.539 --> 00:11:54.740 And Erasmus did not officially join the Anabaptists, but doctrinally he became a Baptist. 00:11:55.799 --> 00:11:56.740 And that's significant. 00:11:57.339 --> 00:12:03.039 Here is a man who's working with a text, and he gets saved, and he basically becomes a Baptist. 00:12:03.799 --> 00:12:07.779 But anyway, Erasmus, over the course of the final years of his career, 00:12:08.259 --> 00:12:11.219 produced a total of five editions of the New Testament. 00:12:11.360 --> 00:12:13.059 Now, last night we talked about editions, 00:12:13.059 --> 00:12:18.199 how in modern printing and publishing, an edition means something's been changed. 00:12:18.579 --> 00:12:21.059 Back then, an edition meant just a reprint, 00:12:21.599 --> 00:12:24.339 because of the nature of letterpress printing, 00:12:24.419 --> 00:12:26.859 which was very primitive and by modern standards. 00:12:26.939 --> 00:12:30.000 But nevertheless, when we talk about these editions then, 00:12:30.399 --> 00:12:33.459 they basically are just reprints of the earlier, 00:12:34.259 --> 00:12:36.019 today with computers and so forth. 00:12:36.819 --> 00:12:40.939 In fact, I was dealing with one of my books today with a printing company, 00:12:40.940 --> 00:12:43.320 and they have the PDF files on archive there, 00:12:43.540 --> 00:12:46.140 and you can reprint easily anywhere. 00:12:46.760 --> 00:12:51.100 But back then, every page had to be reset manually with letters, 00:12:51.160 --> 00:12:52.080 and we'll get into that here tonight. 00:12:52.560 --> 00:12:57.080 But anyway, Erasmus printed five editions of his New Testament. 00:12:57.180 --> 00:12:57.640 He died. 00:12:59.420 --> 00:13:04.200 And sometime not long thereafter, in Central Europe, 00:13:04.360 --> 00:13:06.440 another man by the name of Robert Stevens, 00:13:06.620 --> 00:13:08.140 in French it would be Robert Esteens, 00:13:08.139 --> 00:13:11.819 in Latin it's Robert Stephanus, all referring to the same guy. 00:13:13.519 --> 00:13:17.139 He was a printer by trade and by profession, 00:13:17.759 --> 00:13:20.460 and he specialized in printing religious books. 00:13:21.360 --> 00:13:26.039 And he began to study these Greek manuscripts, 00:13:26.460 --> 00:13:29.759 or rather, I should say, Erasmus printed Greek text, 00:13:29.840 --> 00:13:31.600 and he began to print Erasmus text. 00:13:31.600 --> 00:13:36.080 And as a result, in his studying of the Greek text, 00:13:36.500 --> 00:13:39.100 Robert Stephanus became a born-again Christian, 00:13:40.600 --> 00:13:43.820 and was publishing the New Testament in Paris. 00:13:43.940 --> 00:13:46.560 Well, Paris was a Catholic, or France was a Catholic country. 00:13:47.220 --> 00:13:51.000 And the Catholics took a very dim view of the publication of the scripture. 00:13:51.139 --> 00:13:52.580 They did not want people to read it. 00:13:53.259 --> 00:13:54.600 And he faced the French Inquisition, 00:13:54.600 --> 00:13:58.920 which forced him to flee Paris to Geneva, Switzerland, 00:13:59.480 --> 00:14:01.960 which was a Protestant enclave. 00:14:02.080 --> 00:14:04.220 Incidentally, getting back to Erasmus, 00:14:04.279 --> 00:14:08.279 the Catholics said about Erasmus that Erasmus laid the eggs, 00:14:08.820 --> 00:14:10.120 and Luther hatched them. 00:14:10.200 --> 00:14:13.139 In other words, that Erasmus was the forerunner of the Reformation, 00:14:13.759 --> 00:14:17.240 because Luther read Erasmus' New Testament, 00:14:17.240 --> 00:14:20.980 and in due course, left the Catholic Church. 00:14:21.560 --> 00:14:22.940 Well, that's another story for another day. 00:14:23.580 --> 00:14:26.639 And so Erasmus was followed by Stephanus. 00:14:27.759 --> 00:14:31.720 And Stephanus did something that no one else had done in biblical history. 00:14:32.200 --> 00:14:35.060 And that, in his third edition, in his third reprint, 00:14:36.019 --> 00:14:43.740 he put in what we consider today to be the standard chapter and verse divisions. 00:14:44.279 --> 00:14:46.620 Prior to that time, there was just biblical books, 00:14:46.620 --> 00:14:48.799 but there were no chapters and verses. 00:14:49.519 --> 00:14:53.159 You'd have to fish into the book of Beza. 00:15:19.139 --> 00:15:26.000 He likewise got saved from studying the Word of God. 00:15:27.059 --> 00:15:28.519 And he was forced to flee. 00:15:28.620 --> 00:15:30.960 He had to pack up his printing business in the middle of the night 00:15:30.960 --> 00:15:33.580 and flee to Geneva, Switzerland, 00:15:33.580 --> 00:15:37.240 because of the persecution he was facing there. 00:15:37.620 --> 00:15:39.700 But he went on in the course of his career 00:15:39.700 --> 00:15:43.200 to publish ten editions, or ten reprints, if you will, 00:15:43.780 --> 00:15:44.879 of the New Testament. 00:15:45.180 --> 00:15:47.860 What is significant about Theodore Beza 00:15:47.860 --> 00:15:50.660 is that when the King James translators 00:15:50.660 --> 00:15:52.800 sat down to begin their work in the year 1604, 00:15:52.940 --> 00:15:54.240 and you have a list of the translators there, 00:15:54.280 --> 00:15:55.320 we'll get to that here in a few minutes, 00:15:55.320 --> 00:15:57.200 but when they began their work, 00:15:57.480 --> 00:16:01.140 they worked primarily from Theodore Beza's fifth reprint, 00:16:01.200 --> 00:16:01.860 or fifth edition. 00:16:04.180 --> 00:16:04.600 And 00:16:22.040 Well, 00:16:22.140 --> 00:16:23.440 we moved to England, 00:16:24.120 --> 00:16:27.240 and in the early 1500s, 00:16:27.700 --> 00:16:29.020 another English Catholic, 00:16:30.220 --> 00:16:32.580 a man by the name of William Tyndale, 00:16:33.320 --> 00:16:36.780 got a hold of one of Erasmus' printed New Testaments. 00:16:38.000 --> 00:16:39.660 And in studying it, 00:16:40.520 --> 00:16:41.080 guess what? 00:16:42.400 --> 00:16:44.500 William Tyndale came to Christ. 00:16:45.940 --> 00:16:47.640 William Tyndale got saved. 00:16:47.639 --> 00:16:50.340 He was a scholar. 00:16:51.039 --> 00:16:52.279 He was a linguist. 00:16:52.460 --> 00:16:53.659 He was a brilliant man. 00:16:54.399 --> 00:16:55.919 And he got a burden 00:16:55.919 --> 00:16:59.019 to place the Word of God 00:16:59.019 --> 00:17:00.039 into the English language. 00:17:00.179 --> 00:17:00.299 Now, 00:17:00.600 --> 00:17:01.980 back in 1382, 00:17:02.759 --> 00:17:03.960 Jonathan Wycliffe 00:17:03.960 --> 00:17:06.099 had translated the New Testament 00:17:06.099 --> 00:17:08.680 from the Latin Vulgate, 00:17:09.379 --> 00:17:10.319 the Catholic Bible, 00:17:11.200 --> 00:17:13.259 into Middle English. 00:17:14.000 --> 00:17:14.299 Now, 00:17:14.440 --> 00:17:16.440 that is the forerunner of modern English, 00:17:16.440 --> 00:17:18.080 and we would have much difficulty 00:17:18.080 --> 00:17:19.100 understanding it. 00:17:19.519 --> 00:17:20.580 It's almost like a different language. 00:17:20.580 --> 00:17:20.860 But, 00:17:21.360 --> 00:17:23.360 Wycliffe had put But there are several, in a 00:53:12.960 --> 00:53:19.199 Pinnabaptist translation ministries, a bearing precious seed, and they only translate from 00:53:19.199 --> 00:53:27.480 the traditional text. I'm trying to think of another. I can't think of it right now, but, 00:53:27.579 --> 00:53:33.480 but, you know, we try to work from and encourage missionaries to work from the traditional text 00:53:33.480 --> 00:53:40.360 if they can. And in the Spanish Bible today, the most recent edition is called the Reina Valera 00:53:40.360 --> 00:53:48.480 Gomez, a Baptist missionary in Mexico by the name of Humberto Gomez, translated the New Testament 00:53:48.480 --> 00:53:55.440 again completely from the received text, whereas the 1960 had infringements of the critical text in it. 00:53:55.860 --> 00:54:00.460 But yeah, it's a problem on the mission field. In some places, I mean, it's either to use a poor 00:54:00.460 --> 00:54:05.980 Bible or no Bible. And so it's something where missionaries have to tread very lightly. I know a lot of Baptists have the Schofield Bible, and how close to Scripture is Schofield's notes? 00:54:13.760 --> 00:54:20.300 Okay, the Schofield text is the New Testament.
