And in our deliberate work through the book of Ephesians, I want to begin, if I may, in Ephesians 00:00:22.940 --> 00:00:29.480 chapter 5, verse 1, to kind of set the frame in which our study this morning is going to 00:00:29.480 --> 00:00:36.120 find itself. Therefore, be imitators of God as beloved children, and walk in love as Christ 00:00:36.120 --> 00:00:43.859 loved us and gave Himself for us, a fragrant offing and a sacrifice to God. But sexual immorality and 00:00:43.859 --> 00:00:49.439 all impurity of covetousness must not even be named among you as is proper among saints. 00:00:51.380 --> 00:00:59.000 Let there be no foolishness, or no filthiness, no foolish talk, nor crude joking, which are out of 00:00:59.000 --> 00:01:05.459 place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. Our Father God, this morning, 00:01:59.759 --> 00:02:11.919 we are aware of the value and the power and the significance of Your Word. We are dependent upon 00:02:11.919 --> 00:02:20.099 the Spirit that You have given to every believer. And our request this morning is not a matter of 00:02:20.099 --> 00:02:27.519 habit, but a recognition of Your sufficiency and our frailty and a thankfulness that You answer prayer 00:02:27.519 --> 00:02:35.539 as You do. We understand that it is Your intention that the Word be preached with clarity and the force 00:02:35.539 --> 00:02:42.159 of the Spirit of the Spirit of God. And that people who have been called by Your name and given the high 00:02:42.159 --> 00:02:48.299 and holy purpose of being examples of the Lord of glory would have their hearts molded and informed by 00:02:48.299 --> 00:02:57.060 the Word and leave here with a passion to be effective in a dark and hopeless state. We thank You for the Lord 00:02:57.060 --> 00:03:03.599 Jesus Christ. We thank You for what He has done in our lives and for the divine appointment that He has 00:03:03.599 --> 00:03:09.500 given to us of being the light of the world. And so help us as we hear the Word of God to be affected 00:03:09.500 --> 00:03:15.780 by it this morning and to grow in grace. And we ask this because of You. Amen. 00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:23.420 Now, if you were to take the book of Ephesians and break it down into a very, very terse or short 00:03:23.419 --> 00:03:29.259 summary, you would say that the first part of the book of Ephesians is about God's work of saving us. 00:03:30.039 --> 00:03:34.339 And we recognize one of the songs that we sang this morning talked about the fact that God was the one 00:03:34.339 --> 00:03:39.259 who did this in us. And if you're sitting here this morning and you know the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:03:39.560 --> 00:03:45.799 you would say that you, when you look back across the path, you recognize He was the one who has drawn 00:03:45.799 --> 00:03:51.859 you to the cross and brought you to the place of conviction and burden and recognition of your need. 00:03:51.860 --> 00:03:58.120 And you, in faith, cried out and said, I believe that I'm a sinner and I need Christ. And He saved you. 00:03:58.780 --> 00:04:04.740 The second part of the book of Ephesians really deals with the character or the behavior of the believer. 00:04:05.220 --> 00:04:12.420 So He saves us. What is the result or the outcome of that salvation in practical daily living? 00:04:13.100 --> 00:04:19.340 And as you look back for just a moment to Ephesians chapter 4, you remember the apostle says this, 00:04:19.339 --> 00:04:25.560 Listen, I, a prisoner of the Lord, I urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you've been called. 00:04:25.679 --> 00:04:31.819 We have a walk or a life to live in front of the world that we've been placed before. 00:04:32.779 --> 00:04:39.339 And I would like to believe that the Christian life is really kind of broken down into two very, very simple pieces. 00:04:39.339 --> 00:04:46.839 One would be the idea that by grace you come to salvation and then here's the happy part that's not true. 00:04:47.219 --> 00:04:50.839 And that after you're saved, it's all over and you're just kind of drifting on towards heaven. 00:04:51.659 --> 00:04:57.099 How many of you realize that after salvation and God does a miraculous work in saving us, 00:04:57.500 --> 00:05:05.659 nevertheless, there is the ongoing process of Him forming our life to be more like the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:05:05.660 --> 00:05:09.240 It is a process of progressive sanctification. 00:05:10.180 --> 00:05:17.540 And as you read in the scriptures over and over again, you get very clear indications that this is not a once and done issue. 00:05:17.660 --> 00:05:22.879 It's something that takes place over time and He continues to work in us. 00:05:23.580 --> 00:05:26.200 That's one of the reasons why there in chapter 4 it says, 00:05:26.860 --> 00:05:29.780 Walk worthy of the calling to which you've been called. 00:05:29.779 --> 00:05:34.559 And then in chapter 5 he says, Listen, be an imitator of God. 00:05:34.699 --> 00:05:36.219 In other words, act like your father. 00:05:37.079 --> 00:05:41.099 And he, after having made that general statement, he comes down and says, Listen, 00:05:41.539 --> 00:05:47.059 And you who are the children of God have no business being involved in immorality. 00:05:47.500 --> 00:05:52.219 It is so unbecoming of a child of God to say in one hand, 00:05:52.219 --> 00:05:59.019 Hey, listen, I know Jesus and He is my Savior and He has blessed me with salvation and He's changed me. 00:05:59.779 --> 00:06:04.339 And then to go ahead and live like the rest of the unbelieving world who don't know any better. 00:06:05.299 --> 00:06:11.899 Those who are the children of God have every reason to be different because our life has been changed from the inside out. 00:06:13.199 --> 00:06:22.799 That being true, we also recognize that the process of growing in grace and growing to be more like the Lord Jesus Christ takes place over time. 00:06:22.800 --> 00:06:28.639 And we find repeated reminders that we have responsibility in relationship to this. 00:06:28.819 --> 00:06:32.660 And we have choices we have to make in regards to that. 00:06:32.699 --> 00:06:39.139 And so I want us to think this morning about what this passage deals with, namely choosing between darkness and light. 00:06:39.920 --> 00:06:41.699 Look at the passage there in verse 7. 00:06:41.819 --> 00:06:42.019 It says, 00:06:42.019 --> 00:06:55.479 And when Paul wrote this, he wrote it to people who were in a very wicked city. 00:06:55.959 --> 00:07:00.500 He wrote it to people who were caught up in the culture just the way we are. 00:07:00.500 --> 00:07:02.360 And he was writing to them saying, 00:07:02.500 --> 00:07:07.720 Hey, listen, don't let the world draw you into its seductive pattern of living. 00:07:08.139 --> 00:07:12.500 And actually by becoming involved with them, you become a partner with what's going on. 00:07:13.100 --> 00:07:20.439 And so whether we realize it or not, we who are believers are called to be different than the unbelieving world. 00:07:20.519 --> 00:07:22.100 I'm not talking about how we part our hair. 00:07:22.379 --> 00:07:25.920 I'm talking about the attitudes that we have and the life that we live. 00:07:25.920 --> 00:07:31.620 And I'm curious this morning whether or not your neighbors would say there's something different about you 00:07:31.620 --> partner with the darkness of this world, with 00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:48.420 the mess and the ugliness and the difficulties that you see around you. 00:09:48.419 --> 00:09:52.500 Turn back in your Bible just for a moment to a passage in Psalm 1. 00:09:53.500 --> 00:10:00.699 Psalm 1, and the psalmist there begins the songbook of the Old Testament with a very, 00:10:00.839 --> 00:10:06.559 very pointed reminder of the fact that we who know Christ are really to be substantially 00:10:06.559 --> 00:10:07.120 different. 00:10:08.120 --> 00:10:12.039 It says, blessed is the man who walks not in the, what? 00:10:12.039 --> 00:10:19.879 In the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of 00:10:19.879 --> 00:10:20.959 scoffers. 00:10:21.879 --> 00:10:23.240 So let me ask you this. 00:10:24.279 --> 00:10:31.019 Is it easy to get caught up in the worldview and the philosophy of the unbelieving world that 00:10:31.019 --> 00:10:31.779 lives around us? 00:10:31.779 --> 00:10:32.959 And the answer is yes. 00:10:34.179 --> 00:10:34.779 Yes. 00:10:35.519 --> 00:10:39.659 The world's attitude today is that athletics is of supreme importance. 00:10:39.679 --> 00:10:40.519 Am I right or wrong? 00:10:40.519 --> 00:10:43.460 And the world gets caught up in that. 00:10:43.799 --> 00:10:47.679 The world gets caught up in the idea of retirement, and after retirement, guess what we ought to 00:10:47.679 --> 00:10:47.899 do? 00:10:48.460 --> 00:10:50.379 We ought to spend all our time being what? 00:10:50.620 --> 00:10:52.299 Self-focused, self-indulged. 00:10:52.699 --> 00:10:57.460 The world is caught up in thinking about themself and that which is of benefit to them. 00:10:57.460 --> 00:11:04.039 And we who are called by God to be different are not to be caught up with the world's ideas. 00:11:04.220 --> 00:11:08.860 And here the psalmist says, hey, don't be caught up with the world's philosophy. 00:11:08.860 --> 00:11:13.940 Well, once we're caught up and we begin listening a little bit, then we begin to stand and talk 00:11:13.940 --> 00:11:15.720 a little closer and be a little more involved. 00:11:16.159 --> 00:11:19.899 And then finally, as it says there at the end of verse 1, it says, or sit. 00:11:20.220 --> 00:11:25.480 We're actually seated there listening and caught up and involved in the unbelieving world's logic. 00:11:25.480 --> 00:11:30.379 And as you look at the passage going back to Ephesians, you remind yourself there, it says, 00:11:30.740 --> 00:11:38.960 Paul says, do not be a partner with those who in their unregenerate state have a worldview 00:11:38.960 --> 00:11:41.139 that is contrary to the Scriptures. 00:11:42.039 --> 00:11:44.840 Well, look at what he goes on there and says in that passage. 00:11:44.980 --> 00:11:46.840 He says that we are to be different. 00:11:47.180 --> 00:11:48.100 And how is that? 00:11:48.100 --> 00:11:54.899 Every true believer is to be different because we are different by virtue of our nature and 00:11:54.899 --> 00:11:56.040 what God has done in us. 00:11:56.620 --> 00:11:59.220 We're different than what we once were. 00:11:59.980 --> 00:12:01.920 Now, look at the passage in Mark, what it says. 00:12:01.980 --> 00:12:04.340 It says that we were once actually darkness. 00:12:05.580 --> 00:12:07.740 We were part of the dark. 00:12:08.680 --> 00:12:12.759 And Paul's statement is a reminder of where the Bible stands on the question of what man's 00:12:12.759 --> 00:12:14.560 nature really is like. 00:12:14.559 --> 00:12:19.319 You know, I think the unbelieving world would like to think that men are basically what? 00:12:19.979 --> 00:12:20.579 Pretty good. 00:12:21.079 --> 00:12:21.639 Pretty good. 00:12:22.199 --> 00:12:27.179 And just given a little better environment or a little better education or a little better 00:12:27.179 --> 00:12:33.399 opportunity, men would just, of their own nature, just become wonderful, nice, cute people. 00:12:33.659 --> 00:12:36.439 And the truth of the matter is that's not the nature of man. 00:12:37.459 --> 00:12:43.239 Over in John chapter 3, verse 19, I want you to look at a passage that clarifies what the 00:12:43.240 --> 00:12:46.060 unbelieving heart is like in its attitude towards the light. 00:12:46.820 --> 00:12:52.060 John chapter 3, verse 19 and 20, Jesus makes a comment about man's heart. 00:12:58.639 --> 00:12:59.960 And this is the judgment. 00:13:01.019 --> 00:13:05.639 The light has come into the world and people love the darkness rather than the light because 00:13:05.639 --> 00:13:07.840 their works were evil. 00:13:10.059 --> 00:13:18.319 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light unless 00:13:18.319 --> 00:13:19.819 his work should be exposed. 00:13:20.539 --> 00:13:23.899 How does the unbelieving world react when the light is turned on? 00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:26.819 They don't respond to it favorably. 00:13:27.379 --> 00:13:29.980 They're not interested in hearing what is true. 00:13:30.299 --> 00:13:31.500 They object to it. 00:13:31.500 --> 00:13:35.539 In fact, they resent that which exposes the darkness of their heart. 00:13:35.919 --> 00:13:39.919 And so if you're sitting here this morning and you kind of find yourself bristling at the 00:13:39.919 --> 00:13:45.379 description in the book of Ephesians that says that unbelievers live in darkness, I want to remind 00:13:45.379 --> 00:13:52.440 you that that is the natural reaction of an unregenerate heart to the exposure to the reality of what their 00:13:52.440 --> 00:13:53.639 heart is really like. 00:13:54.779 --> 00:13:57.799 But I want you to recognize that Paul goes on and he says something else. 00:13:57.799 --> 00:14:04.519 He says, you were darkness, but now, now you are light in the Lord. 00:14:04.659 --> 00:14:09.539 And what he's saying is that the believer is light in the Lord. 00:14:10.059 --> 00:14:13.240 Now the term light in the Lord may be a little strange to us. 00:14:13.299 --> 00:14:17.620 In fact, I was thinking this morning through the week actually, I was thinking of how to 00:14:17.620 --> 00:14:22.399 best illustrate it and I really couldn't come up with a good way without being overly dramatic. 00:14:22.620 --> 00:14:25.199 So let me just kind of have you imagine for a moment. 00:14:25.200 --> 00:14:31.440 How many of you remember the last time that the power went out somewhere in Columbus and you were without power? 00:14:32.379 --> 00:14:32.940 Come on. 00:14:33.259 --> 00:14:34.379 You've had that happen, right? 00:14:36.700 --> 00:14:42.280 What happens at night when the power goes off and you have no electricity in your house? 00:14:42.320 --> 00:14:51.960 --> 00:14:54.120 Light is pretty critical. 00:14:54.540 --> 00:15:00.040 And when Paul was speaking at that time, they didn't have electricity like we have today. 00:15:00.960 --> 00:15:06.139 When the sun went down, guess what happened to life in human terms? 00:15:06.900 --> 00:15:15.500 It came to a rather pedestrian plod and everything was revolved or revolved around the few lights that were in the home. 00:15:15.580 --> 00:15:16.860 I remember growing up in India. 00:15:16.860 --> 00:15:18.500 We did not have electricity. 00:15:19.259 --> 00:15:39.460 And one of the things that would begin to happen around dusk is we would go through the process of being sure that the kerosene lanterns and the Aladdin lamps were ready for dark. 00:15:39.460 --> 00:15:40.400 And guess what that meant? 00:15:41.080 --> 00:15:46.759 That meant being sure that the kerosene was in them, that the wicks were ready, that the globes were clean. 00:15:47.300 --> 00:15:52.200 And before it got too dark, you had to light them because guess what happened when it got dark? 00:15:52.900 --> 00:15:54.120 You didn't have any light. 00:15:55.620 --> 00:16:02.460 And we did not have, of ambiance to the room. 00:16:11.939 --> 00:16:16.279 In the good old days growing up, we had one Aladdin in the room. 00:16:16.360 --> 00:16:21.139 And when that lamp moved, guess what happened with everybody else in the room? 00:16:23.779 --> 00:16:26.579 Like magic, they followed where the lamp went. 00:16:27.559 --> 00:16:31.120 Because if you didn't go where the lamp went, guess what you were doing? 00:16:31.120 --> 00:16:36.840 You were sitting in a very dark room wondering if anybody was moving furniture around on you 00:16:36.840 --> 00:16:40.440 because as soon as you tried to leave the point, you were going to bump into something. 00:16:41.200 --> 00:16:43.519 And generally, it was not a happy experience. 00:16:44.039 --> 00:16:45.279 Desperately needed the light. 00:16:45.379 --> 00:16:47.340 And Paul says, hey, you are light. 00:16:47.980 --> 00:16:48.940 You are light. 00:16:50.519 --> 00:16:52.799 And he says that we are light in the Lord. 00:16:52.799 --> 00:17:01.079 The imagery in the scriptures of being light in the Lord is something that we find a number of different places. 00:17:01.219 --> 00:17:06.059 For one, over in John chapter 1, it refers to Jesus as being the light. 00:17:06.220 --> 00:17:08.159 Turn back there, if you will, for a moment. 00:17:08.279 --> 00:17:09.379 John chapter 1. 00:17:11.099 --> 00:17:14.279 It says that the light of the world is Jesus. 00:17:14.279 --> 00:17:23.279 In verse 4, it says, 00:17:23.379 --> 00:17:27.500 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 00:17:29.660 --> 00:17:37.359 Beloved, I want you to understand that apart from Christ, we would be living in dark and miserable days. 00:17:37.359 --> 00:17:45.419 Judith and I, as we were having prayer and devotions this morning, we were thinking back over our past. 00:17:45.719 --> 00:17:51.899 And I remember at a time in my life, actually sitting there, kind of pondering my life, 00:17:52.039 --> 00:17:56.740 and just imagining my heart to be an incredibly black little ball. 00:17:59.500 --> 00:18:03.279 Judith, at another point in her own life, had a very similar thought. 00:18:03.279 --> 00:18:06.819 And both of us, as we were sitting there this morning, we were stopping to think, 00:18:07.180 --> 00:18:13.039 what was it like to be at that point where our hearts were darkened and hopeless, 00:18:14.619 --> 00:18:18.420 and Christ brought light into our lives through salvation? 00:18:19.500 --> 00:18:20.839 Here, John says this. 00:18:20.940 --> 00:18:21.279 He says, 00:18:21.639 --> 00:18:25.680 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 00:18:26.740 --> 00:18:30.960 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 00:18:31.000 --> 00:18:31.940 Aren't you glad for that? 00:18:31.940 --> 00:18:37.360 You who have received the Lord Jesus Christ, there was a time in your life where you were floundering around 00:18:37.360 --> 00:18:43.059 in the absolute misery and despair of sin, in the absolute darkness of the condition you were in, 00:18:43.240 --> 00:18:48.299 and the grace of God got a hold of you, and not only brought light, but he made you light. 00:18:49.039 --> 00:18:51.480 You're different than you once were. 00:18:52.279 --> 00:18:55.900 And we look at this passage, and he says, hey, Jesus is the light. 00:18:56.000 --> 00:19:00.100 But then he goes on, and he says, not only is Jesus the light, but we're light. 00:19:00.099 --> 00:19:01.099 We're light. 00:19:01.480 --> 00:19:04.939 And we see that we are that because of our relationship with Christ. 00:19:05.439 --> 00:19:09.679 Our nature has been changed from being dark to being light. 00:19:09.680 --> 00:19:17.799 Not because we learned some positive mental attitude to kind of hold on to, or a set of rules that we were to follow, 00:19:18.120 --> 00:19:21.180 but really because he changed our nature in salvation. 00:19:22.299 --> 00:19:25.600 I want you to look, if you would, just for a moment over to 1 Peter 2, verse 9. 00:19:25.700 --> 00:19:31.380 Turn to the passage where the apostle speaks about the matter of conversion. 00:19:31.380 --> 00:19:34.720 1 Peter 2, verse 9, he says referencing the fact that the unbeliever is locked into that condition is a little irritating to you. 00:33:37.539 --> 00:33:41.220 Well, I would propose that if it's irritating to hear it from a
