within his church. 00:01:31.060 --> 00:01:40.980 And the more that we understand all of these things, the more we are prepared and equipped to be the healthy church that the New Testament speaks of. looking at the individual salvation of those who are born again, those who are elect, those who are chosen, those who have the hope of salvation in their hearts. 00:02:01.439 --> 00:02:06.439 There is an individualistic focus in the first part of the letter. 00:02:07.340 --> 00:02:16.939 As we move into this section, we see that there is more of a focus not on the individual, but on the church as a look at these verses and to think of the church and its organisation as God's temple. 00:03:22.760 --> 00:03:26.240 And first of all, we want to notice the design. 00:03:27.160 --> 00:03:30.180 And we see the design in two particular ways. 00:03:31.180 --> 00:03:40.700 We see the design, first of all, in the way in which there is development in the ministry of the gospel and in the mission of Christ's church. 00:03:41.360 --> 00:03:47.660 And we see that development probably for us in verse number four, as you come to him. 00:03:48.680 --> 00:03:58.460 It's a simple way of summarising what happens when we, as unbelievers, come to faith in the Lord Jesus and come to follow him. 00:03:59.480 --> 00:04:07.960 And at the beginning of the letter, Peter has made it clear that those who do are called out of darkness. 00:04:39.959 --> 00:04:50.419 And when we do come to the Lord Jesus, we are coming to a living stone. 00:04:50.420 --> 00:04:59.720 And why would Peter use the image of a stone to speak of the Lord Jesus Christ? 00:04:59.720 --> 00:05:11.820 It is because he is connecting the message to the church and the message concerning the church to those people, connecting it with the Old Testament. 00:05:12.640 --> 00:05:24.020 A great lesson for them and for us all that the Bible is a whole and we understand better what it says when we take it as a whole and when we see these connections. 00:05:24.019 --> 00:05:28.019 And so the stone is a stone in Psalm 118. 00:05:28.719 --> 00:05:31.459 The stone is a stone in Isaiah chapter 8. 00:05:31.839 --> 00:05:35.299 The stone is a stone in Isaiah chapter 28. 00:05:36.259 --> 00:05:39.500 It is a stone that is chosen by God. 00:05:39.899 --> 00:05:43.699 As I read in this passage itself, it's precious in the eyes of God. 00:05:43.699 --> 00:05:47.039 It's a stone prepared by God. 00:05:47.920 --> 00:05:53.319 And we look at the history of the building of the Old Testament temple in the days of Solomon. 00:05:53.860 --> 00:05:56.339 And we see that there were quarried stones. 00:05:57.180 --> 00:06:05.219 They were prepared and dressed by the stone cutters and then brought and placed in their place he is a stone prepared by God. 00:06:17.180 --> 00:06:25.800 And the way in which God himself prepares and dresses the Lord Jesus in the sense of making him the perfect saviour that he is.
