If you have your Bible, turn me to Psalm 67, right there in the middle of Scripture. Now we're going to be looking at this missionary song, as Charles Spurgeon calls it. It's a Psalm 67. 00:00:21.920 --> 00:00:33.679 In my office, I have a very small book on missions, many books on missions, but one book particularly, in the introduction, Pastor David Platt reflects on the reality of lostness among the unreached. 00:00:33.740 --> 00:00:41.320 And this is what he writes. He writes, I was near Yemen not long ago. Northern Yemen has approximately 8 million people. 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:46.219 Do you know how many believers there are in northern Yemen? 20 or 30. 00:00:46.219 --> 00:00:59.359 Out of 8 million people, the populations of Alabama and Mississippi combined, there are likely more believers in your Sunday school class or a couple of small groups at your church than there are in all of northern Yemen. 00:01:00.219 --> 00:01:06.700 That is a problem. It is a problem because millions of people in the northern part of Yemen have no access to the gospel. 00:01:06.700 --> 00:01:19.480 They join millions and millions of other unreached peoples in the world who are born, live, and die without ever even hearing the good news of what God has done for their salvation in Christ. 00:01:20.379 --> 00:01:32.140 He continues to write this. 00:05:53.500 --> 00:05:57.799 They had been miraculously delivered from Egyptian captivity in the book of Exodus. 00:05:58.219 --> 00:06:04.180 They had been delivered through the amazing and wondrous plagues that God had sent on those that held his people in captivity. 00:06:04.799 --> 00:06:05.859 God had delivered them. 00:06:05.939 --> 00:06:10.319 He had parted the seas so that he walked through on dry land with an enemy at their back. 00:06:10.740 --> 00:06:14.859 He had led them with a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day. 00:06:14.860 --> 00:06:20.920 He had shown them his love, his provision, his grace, his mercy time and time and time again. 00:06:21.259 --> 00:06:30.180 Yet when Moses went up to Mount Sinai, the people of God turned their back on God and turned to Aaron, the high priest, and said, 00:06:30.540 --> 00:06:36.879 Make for us a golden calf that we may worship it instead. 00:06:36.879 --> 00:06:42.420 You see, our heart designed to worship God seems to work overtime, right? 00:06:42.779 --> 00:06:51.100 It seems to work overtime at finding other things to show worship and praise and the purpose of our lives instead of God. 00:06:51.159 --> 00:07:01.379 The theologian John Calvin refers to our heart as a perpetual factory of idols, meaning that our hearts are just conditioned and they're bent on finding things to worship, 00:07:01.379 --> 00:07:05.920 yet often it is not the worship of God, it is the worship of his creation. 00:07:06.819 --> 00:07:14.319 As Paul writes in Romans 1, we exchange the glories of the immortal creator God for the fleeting works of his creation. 00:07:15.240 --> 00:07:17.680 We choose to worship lesser things. 00:07:18.879 --> 00:07:21.719 That's the point C.S. Lewis makes in his book, The Weight of Glory. 00:07:21.720 --> 00:07:22.940 He writes, 00:07:22.940 --> 00:07:31.080 If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised us in the Gospels, 00:07:31.900 --> 00:07:36.640 it would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. 00:07:37.460 --> 00:07:44.620 We are half-hearted creatures fooling around with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us. 00:07:45.180 --> 00:07:46.940 We are far too easily pleased. 00:07:47.060 --> 00:07:48.580 So that's the story of Scripture, right? 00:07:48.579 --> 00:07:54.319 We are created in the image of God, yet because of our sinful nature, we choose to worship other things. 00:07:54.439 --> 00:07:56.339 We rebel and we run far from God. 00:07:57.579 --> 00:08:01.180 But God demonstrates his love for us. 00:08:01.939 --> 00:08:04.479 And that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 00:08:05.159 --> 00:08:08.060 The beauty of the Gospel is that God loved us anyway. 00:08:08.199 --> 00:08:11.000 He would look at mankind, sinful and wretched that we are, 00:08:11.139 --> 00:08:18.099 and love us so much so that he would give his only begotten Son to die an undeserved death on a sinner's cross, 00:08:18.100 --> 00:08:22.040 so that by his blood and sacrifice our sins might be forgiven, 00:08:22.840 --> 00:08:27.360 and that we would no longer be children of wrath, yet sons and daughters of the Most High God. 00:08:27.960 --> 00:08:33.659 We do not worship some deified dictator who demands our praise undeservingly. 00:08:34.159 --> 00:08:37.879 We worship the Creator God that breathed all things into existence, 00:08:38.100 --> 00:08:40.100 and made a way by his own blood, were created, fashioned, cultivated for that singular purpose of worshiping him. 00:08:54.240 --> 00:09:01.240 Yet if we, who know of God through his works and through his word, 00:09:02.120 --> 00:10:21.480 for all of earth, all the peoples, 00:10:21.620 --> 00:10:23.679 to know of God, to know his salvation, 00:10:23.839 --> 00:10:25.120 to see his face, 00:10:25.720 --> 00:10:26.980 to know his saving power, 00:10:27.039 --> 00:10:27.839 and worship him, 00:10:27.840 --> 00:10:30.160 as they were created to worship him. 00:10:30.180 --> 00:10:31.480 There's a burden in his heart, 00:10:31.519 --> 00:10:34.100 and I say there should be a burden in our heart, 00:10:34.860 --> 00:10:36.460 for those who do not know the Lord. 00:10:37.519 --> 00:10:38.240 If you remember, 00:10:38.360 --> 00:10:39.740 as we were working through the book of Acts, 00:10:39.860 --> 00:10:41.500 there's this huge shift, 00:10:42.080 --> 00:10:46.100 as the gospel begins to be preached to the Gentiles. 00:10:46.100 --> 00:10:47.759 The apostle Peter saw a vision, 00:10:48.139 --> 00:10:50.120 and God began to extend salvation, 00:10:50.340 --> 00:10:51.500 the gospel proclamation, 00:10:51.820 --> 00:10:52.920 to the Gentiles, 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:54.280 those who weren't Jewish, 00:10:54.379 --> 00:10:56.220 or part of God's elect in the Old Testament. 00:10:56.220 --> 00:10:58.420 And so we were looking at it as a huge shift, 00:10:58.500 --> 00:11:00.660 because it almost seems as though, 00:11:01.060 --> 00:11:02.180 when you read throughout the Bible, 00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:03.820 it almost seems as though, 00:11:04.100 --> 00:11:06.200 that God shows favor on the Israelites, 00:11:06.940 --> 00:11:09.019 and everyone else can just suffer his wrath. 00:11:09.540 --> 00:11:10.899 It almost seems as though, 00:11:10.980 --> 00:11:12.000 if you read the Old Testament, 00:11:12.139 --> 00:11:15.320 it seems as though God loves a particular group of people, 00:11:15.540 --> 00:11:16.500 and everyone else, 00:11:16.560 --> 00:11:17.820 he just casts out, 00:11:18.019 --> 00:11:18.519 discards, 00:11:18.660 --> 00:11:20.259 and allows to suffer his wrath. 00:11:20.899 --> 00:11:22.100 Yet there's another biblical principle, 00:11:22.100 --> 00:11:25.840 that I want us to allow to inform our understanding, 00:11:25.840 --> 00:11:27.720 of the mission of God in the Old Testament. 00:11:28.360 --> 00:11:29.000 It's throughout, 00:11:29.279 --> 00:11:30.379 but in 2 Peter 3, 00:11:30.600 --> 00:11:30.899 Peter, 00:11:30.980 --> 00:11:32.480 the apostle Peter writes this. 00:11:32.820 --> 00:11:34.820 He writes that God wills, 00:11:35.399 --> 00:11:36.399 God wills, 00:11:36.440 --> 00:11:37.300 it is the will of God, 00:11:37.340 --> 00:11:40.180 he desires that none should perish. 00:11:41.060 --> 00:11:42.500 God does not delight, 00:11:42.500 --> 00:11:46.300 in the death of those whom he created for himself. 00:11:47.399 --> 00:11:49.960 God wills that none should perish. 00:11:49.960 --> 00:11:50.980 So looking at this, 00:11:51.100 --> 00:11:52.620 God's scope of redeeming mankind, 00:11:53.240 --> of earth, 00:13:32.679 --> 00:13:33.899 which would include the Gentiles, 00:13:34.740 --> 00:13:36.679 may praise God. 00:13:36.679 --> 00:13:39.199 He looks at the world around him 00:13:39.199 --> 00:13:40.219 and he sees brokenness. 00:13:40.839 --> 00:13:42.199 He sees the vain pursuits. 00:13:42.319 --> 00:13:43.199 He sees the sin. 00:13:43.279 --> 00:13:45.879 He sees the tragedy all
