00:01:17.439 --> 00:01:21.920 I would like to draw your attention this morning, beginning in verse 13. 00:01:22.260 --> 00:01:30.379 If you will have your Bibles open to this passage, you'll find it extremely helpful as we look at God's Word together. 00:01:31.520 --> 00:01:37.260 Matthew chapter 14, beginning in verse 13. 00:01:37.260 --> 00:01:47.219 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. 00:01:48.240 --> 00:01:53.900 Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 00:01:54.540 --> 00:02:03.400 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 00:02:03.400 --> 00:02:08.539 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, 00:02:08.920 --> 00:02:12.560 This is a remote 00:03:10.800 --> 00:03:19.039 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men besides women and children. 00:03:19.039 --> 00:03:26.019 Well, this beautiful account of the feeding of the five thousand 00:03:26.019 --> 00:03:32.560 is probably one of the most familiar stories in all of Scripture. 00:03:33.780 --> 00:03:42.159 This story is immortalized, as it were, for us in children's Bibles and storybooks. 00:03:42.159 --> 00:03:50.819 And has become in our minds and in our thinking one of the great pastoral miracles of Jesus. 00:03:51.859 --> 00:03:54.719 As we can picture him in our mind's eye, 00:03:55.039 --> 00:04:03.659 sitting on a rock on a grassy hillside with families and lovable children kind of surrounding him. 00:04:03.659 --> 00:04:09.020 But with closer examination into the text that's before us, 00:04:09.079 --> 00:04:19.379 it's easy to allow that stereotypical scene really affect the way that we read the context 00:04:19.379 --> 00:04:22.839 of the passage that we're examining this morning. 00:04:23.579 --> 00:04:27.620 And so I want you to notice at the beginning of Matthew 14, 00:04:27.620 --> 00:04:33.079 something that is very devastating that has just occurred. 00:04:33.860 --> 00:04:37.319 Namely, the execution of John the Baptist. 00:04:38.180 --> 00:04:42.319 Who we all know, of course, as the forerunner of the Messiah. 00:04:42.540 --> 00:04:45.639 The son of Zacharias and Elizabeth. 00:04:45.639 --> 00:04:50.959 Who was in fact the cousin of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:04:50.959 --> 00:04:57.819 Now if you remember the event that was surrounding this horrific execution 00:04:57.819 --> 00:05:00.500 and the murder of John the Baptist. 00:05:00.759 --> 00:05:04.879 The event surrounding this was the birthday celebration 00:05:04.879 --> 00:05:11.799 and a banquet that was being held by a man by the name of Herod Antipas 00:05:11.799 --> 00:05:19.259 in his fortress palace in southern Israel around the Dead Sea. 00:05:19.259 --> 00:05:33.379 During this lavish event, the crowd became so worked up into a scene of drunkenness and lust 00:05:33.379 --> 00:05:39.360 at the dancing of a young girl that Herod promised the young girl 00:05:39.360 --> 00:05:44.560 to give her absolutely anything that she asked for. 00:05:44.560 --> 00:05:51.000 acting as a puppet on a string controlled by her mother 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:55.160 who had been preached against by John the Baptist 00:05:55.160 --> 00:05:58.480 because of her adulterous affair. 00:05:58.959 --> 00:06:03.379 She asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter. 00:06:04.759 --> 00:06:08.160 Look with me in Matthew 14 in verse 10. 00:06:08.160 --> 00:06:11.980 And had John beheaded in prison. 00:06:12.840 --> 00:06:19.680 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl who carried it to her mother. 00:06:20.820 --> 00:06:25.540 John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. 00:06:26.140 --> 00:06:30.080 Then they went and told Jesus. 00:06:30.079 --> 00:06:38.279 We could really call this the first banquet of Matthew 14. 00:06:39.079 --> 00:06:46.379 A banquet of wickedness and murder and drunkenness. 00:06:47.299 --> 00:06:54.099 But in verse 14, we come to a banquet of another kind, don't we? 00:06:54.100 --> 00:06:59.700 The banquet that Jesus Himself presides over. 00:07:00.820 --> 00:07:06.640 This banquet is not held in a fortress or a palace or a castle, 00:07:06.939 --> 00:07:12.060 but it's in the open air of the rolling hills of Galilee. 00:07:12.900 --> 00:07:19.000 The invitation to this banquet is not restricted to the intelligentsia of the day 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:23.360 or the high political leaders or the kings of the day. 00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:32.420 But this particular banquet is open to all crowds without any discrimination at all. 00:07:33.759 --> 00:07:44.879 Unlike Herod's banquet, the preeminent purpose of which was to brag about his position among the crowds, 00:07:44.879 --> 00:07:52.120 Jesus' banquet is not provided to boast of his standing to the crowds, 00:07:52.120 --> 00:08:02.480 but is meant to be a reminder to us of the love and compassion that Jesus has on people. 00:08:04.159 --> 00:08:09.339 Unlike Herod's banquet that was self-serving and deadly, 00:08:09.339 --> 00:08:24.500 the compassion of Jesus is so vividly seen in this manner in which He satisfies the vast multitudes that are before Him. 00:08:25.979 --> 00:08:34.240 There are only two miracles that are recorded in all four Gospel accounts. 00:08:34.240 --> 00:08:41.840 The feeding of the 5,000 and the resurrection of our Lord. 00:08:43.100 --> 00:08:53.120 All four Gospel writers saw the great importance of the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000, 00:08:53.600 --> 00:08:57.700 and so they include it in all of their accounts. 00:08:57.700 --> 00:09:05.740 And what I want to do with you this morning is to simply walk through very slowly this text 00:09:05.740 --> 00:09:11.620 as we begin to see five very simple truths. 00:09:12.160 --> 00:09:15.259 Five things that I would like to say to you this morning 00:09:15.259 --> 00:09:22.400 that we can hang our thoughts on that helps us walk through the text before us. 00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:27.559 The very first thing that I would like to mention to you and draw to your attention 00:09:27.559 --> 00:09:31.100 is separation from the crowds. 00:09:31.899 --> 00:09:34.179 Separation from the crowds. 00:09:35.439 --> 00:09:44.139 In the parallel account of this event as recorded for us in Mark's Gospel, chapter 6, 00:09:44.139 --> 00:09:47.879 Mark says in chapter 6, verse 30, 00:09:47.879 --> 00:09:56.059 the apostles returned to Jesus and told Him all they had done and taught. 00:09:57.419 --> 00:10:04.980 Now, this very interesting verse tells us something else that's going on here 00:10:04.980 --> 00:10:10.159 just prior to the great miracle of the feeding of the 5,000. 00:10:10.159 --> 00:10:14.839 We have to go back a bit to discover what that is. 00:10:15.620 --> 00:10:19.439 In Mark chapter 6, verse 7, Mark says, 00:10:19.860 --> 00:10:26.459 Jesus called the twelve to Himself and began to send them out two by two 00:10:26.459 --> 00:10:31.079 and gave them authority over unclean spirits. 00:10:32.519 --> 00:10:39.939 And so here we are, the disciples who have now been ministering in the towns and villages 00:10:39.940 --> 00:10:45.280 of the surrounding area are now coming back to Jesus 00:10:45.280 --> 00:10:52.120 to report everything that has taken place in their individual ministries 00:10:52.120 --> 00:10:55.940 among the people in the surrounding areas. 00:10:56.640 --> 00:11:00.500 You see, Jesus has sent them out two by two 00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:07.100 into all the surrounding area to teach and to preach and to work miracles. 00:11:07.100 --> 00:11:14.379 And now they are coming back, reporting back to Jesus all that has taken place. 00:11:15.139 --> 00:11:24.860 And because of this, the crowds of people are following the apostles back to Jesus. 00:11:25.560 --> 00:11:35.399 And the crowds are growing numerically into an uncontrollable frenzy of people. 00:11:35.399 --> 00:11:43.379 Mark tells us, the disciples are reporting to Jesus all their ministry activities 00:11:43.379 --> 00:11:51.480 and the crowds are growing so large, they don't have time to get anything to eat. 00:11:53.159 --> 00:11:57.019 And so because of this great commotion, 00:11:57.019 --> 00:12:05.939 Jesus and the twelve withdraw from an undisclosed location on the Sea of Galilee 00:12:05.939 --> 00:12:11.039 to what Scripture tells us is a deserted area. 00:12:12.759 --> 00:12:17.399 Now Luke, in his story of the feeding of the five thousand, 00:12:18.100 --> 00:12:25.079 tells us that Jesus and the disciples withdraw from this massive crowd of people 00:12:25.080 --> 00:12:29.759 into an area known as Bethsaida. 00:12:31.360 --> 00:12:35.040 Now look with me in Matthew 14, verse 13. 00:12:36.360 --> 00:12:39.160 When Jesus heard what happened, 00:12:40.060 --> 00:12:47.379 He withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. 00:12:48.460 --> 00:12:50.360 Now when we read this verse, 00:12:50.360 --> 00:12:56.399 Matthew seems to indicate that Jesus is alone by Himself. 00:12:57.879 --> 00:13:03.700 Even though that we know He is among the other twelve disciples. 00:13:05.080 --> 00:13:07.899 But what I love about Matthew's account 00:13:07.899 --> 00:13:11.899 is I think Matthew is emphasizing here 00:13:11.899 --> 00:13:16.240 something so intimate and personal 00:13:16.240 --> 00:13:18.480 about our Lord 00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:20.180 in verse 13. 00:13:21.519 --> 00:13:23.879 We see something here 00:13:23.879 --> 00:13:25.759 of the tenderness 00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:28.360 and the grief 00:13:28.360 --> 00:13:31.860 and the love of our Lord 00:13:31.860 --> 00:13:34.680 for John the Baptist 00:13:34.680 --> 00:13:36.740 who has just died. 00:13:37.879 --> 00:13:40.600 If you can think back upon your life 00:13:40.600 --> 00:13:42.779 and consider times 00:13:42.779 --> 00:13:43.720 when you've heard 00:13:43.720 --> 00:13:46.519 about the death of a dear loved one 00:13:46.519 --> 00:13:49.740 or a death of a dear close friend 00:13:49.740 --> 00:13:51.980 and how you've just simply 00:13:51.980 --> 00:13:53.399 wanted to withdraw 00:13:53.399 --> 00:13:55.139 from the noise 00:13:55.139 --> 00:13:57.139 and the hustle and bustle 00:13:57.139 --> 00:13:58.360 of the crowds 00:13:58.360 --> 00:13:59.540 just to withdraw 00:13:59.540 --> 00:14:00.860 and reflect 00:14:00.860 --> 00:14:02.360 and to pray 00:14:02.360 --> 00:14:04.960 and to go into another room 00:14:04.960 --> 00:14:06.740 or go somewhere 00:14:06.740 --> 00:14:07.279 simply 00:14:07.279 --> 00:14:08.420 to be alone. 00:14:08.419 --> 00:14:11.639 And so what I think Matthew 00:14:11.639 --> 00:14:13.259 wants us to see here 00:14:13.259 --> 00:14:14.259 in verse 13 00:14:14.259 --> 00:14:15.659 is simply 00:14:15.659 --> 00:14:16.579 Jesus' 00:14:17.099 --> 00:14:19.259 heartfelt grief 00:14:19.259 --> 00:14:21.240 over the death 00:14:21.240 --> 00:14:22.379 of John. 00:14:23.579 --> 00:14:25.179 Perhaps it's a time 00:14:25.179 --> 00:14:26.919 for Him to think 00:14:26.919 --> 00:14:28.159 and to pray 00:14:28.159 --> 00:14:30.099 and to contemplate 00:14:30.099 --> 00:14:33.079 as the news of the death of John 00:14:33.079 --> 00:14:34.519 has reached His ears. 00:14:34.740 --> 00:14:35.219 John, 00:14:35.339 --> 00:14:36.980 of whom Jesus said, 00:14:36.980 --> 00:14:39.820 among those born of woman, 00:14:40.200 --> 00:14:43.840 none has been greater. 00:14:45.740 --> 00:14:47.659 And I also want to point out 00:14:47.659 --> 00:14:49.279 that I see this 00:14:49.279 --> 00:14:51.899 as a turning point 00:14:51.899 --> 00:14:54.360 in the ministry of Christ 00:14:54.360 --> 00:14:56.680 which we'll talk about later. 00:14:58.220 --> 00:14:59.440 And so here we are. 00:15:00.300 --> 00:15:01.820 Jesus has just heard 00:15:01.820 --> 00:15:03.560 that John has been executed. 00:15:03.559 --> 00:15:06.079 He gets into a boat 00:15:06.079 --> 00:15:08.399 along with the twelve disciples 00:15:08.399 --> 00:15:10.279 who have just come back 00:15:10.279 --> 00:15:12.179 from all the surrounding villages 00:15:12.179 --> 00:15:14.439 and they set off 00:15:14.439 --> 00:15:16.479 onto the Sea of Galilee 00:15:16.479 --> 00:15:18.939 this one afternoon. 00:15:20.099 --> 00:15:22.779 That brings us to our second point. 00:15:23.500 --> 00:15:25.799 Sheep without a shepherd. 00:15:26.239 --> 00:15:27.259 Would you look at the end 00:15:27.259 --> 00:15:28.759 of verse 13? 00:15:28.759 --> 00:15:30.819 Hearing of this, 00:15:31.259 --> 00:15:32.679 the crowds followed Him 00:15:32.679 --> 00:15:33.600 on foot 00:15:33.600 --> 00:15:34.980 from the towns. 00:15:36.639 --> 00:15:38.159 When Jesus landed 00:15:38.159 --> 00:15:41.279 and saw a large crowd, 00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:43.799 He had compassion on them 00:15:43.799 --> 00:15:46.379 and healed their sick. 00:15:47.980 --> 00:15:50.319 The people recognize 00:15:50.319 --> 00:15:53.100 Jesus and His disciples 00:15:53.100 --> 00:15:54.679 get into the boat. 00:15:54.679 --> 00:15:59.639 And from all the surrounding towns 00:15:59.639 --> 00:16:00.719 and villages, 00:16:01.679 --> 00:16:04.759 they follow Him on foot. 00:16:06.120 --> 00:16:08.179 And Jesus and His disciples 00:16:08.179 --> 00:16:11.599 set sail on the Sea of Galilee. 00:16:11.959 --> 00:16:14.419 They see this massive crowd of people 00:16:14.419 --> 00:16:16.500 forming on the shoreline. 00:16:17.739 --> 00:16:21.719 Now, there are about 200 villages 00:16:21.720 --> 00:16:24.620 and cities and towns 00:16:24.620 --> 00:16:27.639 in this area of Galilee. 00:16:27.639 --> 00:16:29.040 And Matthew says 00:16:29.040 --> 00:16:31.920 they come from the towns. 00:16:32.220 --> 00:16:34.000 This indicates, my friends, 00:16:34.200 --> 00:16:36.779 that everyone from every town, 00:16:37.040 --> 00:16:37.980 every village, 00:16:38.360 --> 00:16:39.180 every city 00:16:39.180 --> 00:16:41.040 come out to see Jesus. 00:16:43.620 --> 00:16:45.899 This speaks to us, doesn't it? 00:16:46.139 --> 00:16:48.840 Something of the great fame 00:16:48.840 --> 00:16:50.160 of Jesus 00:16:50.160 --> 00:16:51.660 during this period. 00:16:52.700 --> 00:16:54.980 He never could get away 00:16:54.980 --> 00:16:57.120 from the crowds of people. 00:16:58.360 --> 00:17:00.040 May I put it in a perhaps 00:17:00.040 --> 00:17:01.940 very American terminology, 00:17:02.740 --> 00:17:05.380 Jesus is a rock star. 00:17:07.759 --> 00:17:10.259 And every time He speaks, 00:17:10.779 --> 00:17:12.900 every time He performs a miracle, 00:17:12.900 --> 00:17:16.680 literally the entire town 00:17:16.680 --> 00:17:18.860 goes to see Him. 00:17:20.460 --> 00:17:22.700 And this enormous crowd 00:17:22.700 --> 00:17:24.400 is following Jesus 00:17:24.400 --> 00:17:25.759 on the shoreline, 00:17:26.019 --> 00:17:27.940 but the other Gospel writers say 00:17:27.940 --> 00:17:30.500 they not only are walking, 00:17:31.880 --> 00:17:34.200 the other Gospel writers tell us 00:17:34.200 --> 00:17:38.360 they ran to see Him. 00:17:38.359 --> 00:17:42.939 This is not just some ordinary person 00:17:42.939 --> 00:17:44.899 that you meet on the street. 00:17:46.159 --> 00:17:48.139 They're running after Jesus 00:17:48.139 --> 00:17:50.439 because they want Him 00:17:50.439 --> 00:17:53.279 to do something for them. 00:17:54.679 --> 00:17:57.240 And even when seeking privacy, 00:17:57.959 --> 00:18:00.119 Jesus cannot hide. 00:18:01.059 --> 00:18:02.299 Look at verse 14. 00:18:03.139 --> 00:18:05.419 When Jesus landed and saw 00:18:05.420 --> 00:18:06.560 a large crowd, 00:18:07.120 --> 00:18:09.940 He had compassion on them. 00:18:10.660 --> 00:18:12.500 I just love that verse. 00:18:14.539 --> 00:18:17.800 Jesus is not some brash, 00:18:18.480 --> 00:18:20.160 harsh man 00:18:20.160 --> 00:18:22.240 who cannot be approached 00:18:22.240 --> 00:18:25.180 or who's trying to avoid people. 00:18:27.180 --> 00:18:30.300 No, He looks upon them 00:18:30.300 --> 00:18:32.560 as He did Jerusalem 00:18:32.559 --> 00:18:35.960 and He mourns for them. 00:18:37.000 --> 00:18:37.839 Their condition, 00:18:38.279 --> 00:18:39.179 their need, 00:18:39.359 --> 00:18:41.119 their spiritual blindness. 00:18:43.059 --> 00:18:45.319 Jesus is the complete opposite 00:18:45.319 --> 00:18:47.539 of unapproachable. 00:18:49.039 --> 00:18:50.159 He's tender. 00:18:51.379 --> 00:18:52.839 And He's loving. 00:18:54.419 --> 00:18:57.399 And He's full of compassion. 00:18:58.679 --> 00:19:01.460 And the compassion is so great 00:19:01.460 --> 00:19:03.440 that He's no longer concerned 00:19:03.440 --> 00:19:05.039 over His own rest 00:19:05.039 --> 00:19:06.039 or His own time 00:19:06.039 --> 00:19:07.059 or His own grief. 00:19:08.059 --> 00:19:09.799 But He's most concerned 00:19:09.799 --> 00:19:11.759 with the need 00:19:11.759 --> 00:19:13.059 that is before Him. 00:19:14.360 --> 00:19:17.240 Mark 6, verse 34 00:19:17.240 --> Numerous times throughout Scripture 00:19:30.440 --> 00:19:32.339 we see that this is a theme 00:19:32.339 --> 00:19:33.139 that's picked up 00:19:33.139 --> 00:19:34.619 that the people of Israel 00:19:34.619 --> 00:19:36.119 and others are seen 00:19:36.119 --> 00:19:38.759 as vast multitudes of people 00:19:38.759 --> 00:19:40.139 without a shepherd. 00:19:40.379 --> 00:19:40.899 For instance, 00:19:41.220 --> 00:19:44.039 in Numbers chapter 27 00:19:44.039 --> 00:19:48.000 when Moses is praying for the Lord 00:19:48.000 --> 00:19:49.919 to send Israel a leader, 00:19:50.599 --> 00:19:51.000 it says, 00:19:51.119 --> 00:19:52.480 Moses said to the people, 00:19:52.480 --> 00:19:54.220 may the Lord the God 00:19:54.220 --> 00:19:55.140 who gives breath 00:19:55.140 --> 00:19:56.500 to all living things 00:19:56.500 --> 00:19:57.839 appoint someone 00:19:57.839 --> 00:19:59.079 over this community 00:19:59.079 --> 00:20:00.259 to go out 00:20:00.259 --> 00:20:01.900 so in a sense, 00:20:41.980 --> 00:20:42.920 John the Baptist 00:20:42.920 --> 00:20:46.180 is a shepherd of the people 00:20:46.180 --> 00:20:48.960 pointing them to the Messiah. 00:20:50.900 -->
