Now, if you're new, we as a church are going through 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:38.480 this mini-series called Who is This King? And we're going through the Gospels and we're looking at the 00:00:38.480 --> 00:00:46.340 life and the impact and the claims that Jesus Christ made. And last week we looked at the chapter 00:00:46.340 --> 00:00:53.100 before, John chapter 12, and we looked at how Jesus said this most unusual thing. He spoke about his 00:00:53.100 --> 00:01:00.660 imminent death as the moment of his glory. And we looked at how Jesus said he's come to 00:01:00.660 --> 00:01:07.560 inaugurate a kingdom, but he hasn't done it through a coronation service or by wearing a gold crown. 00:01:08.219 --> 00:01:13.120 He's come to do it by bearing a cross. Now this morning we look at another passage of scripture 00:01:13.120 --> 00:01:19.319 in which Jesus says some very unusual things. And today we're going to see how Jesus serves his people 00:01:19.319 --> 00:01:26.879 by saving them. And how his death on the cross washes them, washes us, not just for all eternity, 00:01:27.139 --> 00:01:33.839 but even for today, for right now, for this week as we go into our city. Now this passage that Freya 00:01:33.839 --> 00:01:39.280 and Jonathan read to us is a favorite passage for followers of Jesus throughout the centuries. 00:01:39.739 --> 00:01:45.639 A passage that talks about humility and Christ-like service. And that's true. But as we look at this 00:01:45.640 --> 00:01:49.079 passage, we're going to learn a couple of other things about Jesus. We're going to learn about 00:01:49.079 --> 00:01:53.319 Jesus the King. And there's four things in particular I think Christ wants us to see. 00:01:53.780 --> 00:01:58.980 We're going to learn about Christ the serving King, or the servant King, Christ the saving King, 00:01:59.760 --> 00:02:06.060 Christ the cleansing King, and then fourthly, Christ the commissioning King. Okay? So let's dive in 00:02:06.060 --> 00:02:14.039 and Christ the servant King, Jesus the servant King. Now in verse 1, Jesus talks about how he knows 00:02:14.039 --> 00:02:21.000 that his hour has come, and he loves his disciples. And then in verse 2, if you look at the first three 00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:29.139 words of verse 2, and the first three words of verse 4, it says this, during supper, Jesus got up from 00:02:29.139 --> 00:02:36.180 supper. Okay? So Jesus is having this meal with his friends, his disciples, and he gets up. But John 00:02:36.180 --> 00:02:43.039 wants to tell us far more than just Jesus got up. He wants to tell us something of there's a showdown of 00:02:43.039 --> 00:02:49.259 power that's going on here, right? So let's read verse 2 to 4 completely. It says this, during supper, 00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:56.219 when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Jesus, 00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:02.799 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, that he had come from God, 00:03:02.859 --> 00:03:09.060 and that he was going back to God, rose up from supper. Okay? So John is telling us here, verse 2, 00:03:09.060 --> 00:03:16.219 that Satan has come and seduced Judas Iscariot. Judas has willingly gone along with that. He wants to 00:03:16.219 --> 00:03:22.860 pursue his own glory. And then in verse 3, he tells us that Jesus has come from God the Father. He's 00:03:22.860 --> 00:03:28.259 going back to God the Father. And the reason is because Jesus is nothing less than God himself. 00:03:28.960 --> 00:03:34.819 Christ left the throne room of heaven and has come to earth, but he's nothing less than God himself. 00:03:34.819 --> 00:03:42.979 And so with this imminent showdown of power, what's going to happen? On the one hand, you've got Satan 00:03:42.979 --> 00:03:50.680 seducing Judas. You've got Jesus Christ, raw power and status and authority, the God of all creation, 00:03:51.219 --> 00:03:58.139 in this showdown of power. And what's going to happen? Well, ordinarily, I'll tell you what I would do 00:03:58.139 --> 00:04:04.419 if I was Jesus. I would smite my enemies. I would destroy those that are opposing me, and I would 00:04:04.419 --> 00:04:10.359 establish my rule and authority. Right? Am I the only one that would do that? Or is there one or two others? 00:04:11.219 --> 00:04:15.839 Perhaps I see that smile on your face, and I know what you're thinking, right? If I were the sovereign 00:04:15.839 --> 00:04:22.199 God of the universe, and here is someone that I know is busy calculating how to betray me into my enemies, 00:04:22.199 --> 00:04:30.060 I would take them out. But what does Jesus do? What does Jesus do? Well, he gets up from the table, 00:04:31.079 --> 00:04:39.240 he undresses, he lays aside his respectable gear. He then does what no respectable man would do. 00:04:39.919 --> 00:04:48.159 He gets on his knees, and he washes the feet of his disciples. Now, washing someone's feet is something 00:04:48.160 --> 00:04:53.580 that's not very common in our culture, I'm assuming. It's not very common in South African culture, 00:04:53.640 --> 00:04:58.280 and I don't think it's very common in Hong Kong culture. But it was something that was very popular 00:04:58.280 --> 00:05:03.640 and common in Jesus' day. And if you were a respectable member of society, it was something 00:05:03.640 --> 00:05:09.460 that you would have experienced fairly often. It was something that was fairly common. And the reason 00:05:09.460 --> 00:05:16.220 is obvious, right? You're walking these long days on dusty roads, hot Middle Eastern climate. 00:05:16.220 --> 00:05:23.020 Your feet are getting sweaty and dusty. And at the end of the day, as you go to somebody's house, 00:05:23.140 --> 00:05:28.620 someone would be waiting there to wash your feet so that your feet feel clean as you enjoy a meal 00:05:28.620 --> 00:05:36.420 with your guests or with your hosts. Now, let me just interject here and say we as a family have 00:05:36.420 --> 00:05:42.000 been living in Hong Kong for three months now. Tomorrow will be three months since we left. And for me 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:48.360 personally, it's been probably three of the most exciting, exhilarating, fun-filled months of my 00:05:48.360 --> 00:05:54.920 life. I'm absolutely having the time of my life. And there have been a couple of tough days. 00:05:55.720 --> 00:05:58.740 There have been a couple of moments where I thought, God, I don't know if I can do this. 00:05:59.060 --> 00:06:04.579 But as a whole, I'm having the time of my life. Okay, well I experienced that quite early on 00:07:05.579 --> 00:07:12.339 and I'll stay here. Now, think about this, right? What's happening in Jerusalem in John chapter 13? 00:07:12.519 --> 00:07:17.759 Verse 1 told us, the time for Passover had come. What's happening at Passover? 00:07:18.539 --> 00:07:24.839 Hundreds of thousands of animals are being brought to Jerusalem to be sacrificed for the Passover meal, 00:07:24.959 --> 00:07:29.399 which is going to happen this very night. So Jesus is having his Passover meal. 00:07:29.399 --> 00:07:36.639 Jerusalem is just filled everywhere with animals, mainly sheep, lambs, some cattle, some goats. 00:07:37.099 --> 00:07:42.659 Jerusalem is filled with animals, which means Jerusalem is filled with animal fowl, right? 00:07:42.959 --> 00:07:48.739 And there aren't cute little signs saying, please clean up after your dogs or, you know, 00:07:49.159 --> 00:07:50.979 everyone walking around with a water bottle. 00:07:51.819 --> 00:07:55.719 Jerusalem is filled and these people are wearing open sandals. 00:07:55.720 --> 00:08:03.140 And so think about it, hot Middle Eastern climate, dusty roads, animal fowl all over the place, 00:08:03.480 --> 00:08:07.880 open sandals. How clean do you think your feet are at the end of the day? 00:08:08.700 --> 00:08:11.480 Not very clean, right? Don't smell so good. 00:08:12.080 --> 00:08:16.040 And so customarily, someone, when they come to your house, what do you do? 00:08:16.040 --> 00:08:21.939 Your servant, as an act of service and love, gets a bowl of warm water, a towel wrapped around them, 00:08:22.180 --> 00:08:23.600 and they wash your feet. 00:08:24.080 --> 00:08:28.600 They wash the dust and the sweat and the grime and the muck off of your feet. 00:08:29.340 --> 00:08:34.600 However, this is a job that no Jewish servant would do. 00:08:34.980 --> 00:08:39.620 No matter how lowly the servant, no matter how esteemed the master, 00:08:40.060 --> 00:08:43.180 this is a job that no Jewish servant was required to do. 00:08:43.179 --> 00:08:47.539 Only foreigners would do this. Only Gentiles would wash the feet of their masters. 00:08:49.399 --> 00:08:53.659 Remember John the Baptist comes to Jesus, or before Jesus comes, and he says, 00:08:54.000 --> 00:09:00.819 after me is coming someone who is so worthy, I wouldn't even be worthy enough to untie his sandals. 00:09:00.879 --> 00:09:01.639 What's happening there? 00:09:01.979 --> 00:09:06.279 In Jewish culture, you could ask your Jewish servant to do almost anything, 00:09:06.399 --> 00:09:07.719 but there are two things they couldn't do. 00:09:08.120 --> 00:09:11.419 You couldn't ask them to untie your sandals or to wash your feet. 00:09:11.419 --> 00:09:13.339 But here John the Baptist says, 00:09:13.500 --> 00:09:16.159 when the Messiah comes, when the King comes, 00:09:16.519 --> 00:09:21.059 He is so worthy that if He asked me to wash His feet, to untie His sandals, 00:09:21.159 --> 00:09:22.579 I would gladly do it. 00:09:22.860 --> 00:09:26.479 But in fact, so unworthy am I of Christ the Messiah, 00:09:26.879 --> 00:09:31.019 that I wouldn't even consider myself worthy enough to untie His sandals, 00:09:31.120 --> 00:09:32.139 to wash His feet. 00:09:32.459 --> 00:09:35.399 So foul, 00:09:53.519 --> 00:09:54.279 and the sweat, 00:09:54.819 --> 00:09:55.639 and the dust, 00:09:56.039 --> 00:09:58.279 off of the feet of His disciples. 00:09:59.159 --> 00:10:00.240 Who is this King? 00:10:00.919 --> 00:10:03.039 Who is this King that would do such a thing? 00:10:03.039 --> 00:10:06.799 You know, one of the astounding things about this passage 00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:10.799 is how many people are present with Jesus at this meal? 00:10:11.639 --> 00:10:14.519 It's Jesus and His 12 disciples, right? 00:10:15.099 --> 00:10:17.480 Now are there 12 of them, or are there 11 of them? 00:10:19.659 --> 00:10:21.500 Verse 30, a little bit later on, 00:10:21.599 --> 00:10:24.039 tells us that Judas Iscariot is still there. 00:10:24.759 --> 00:10:28.419 And later on, Judas gets up to go and consult with the leaders 00:10:28.419 --> 00:10:30.079 how to betray Jesus. 00:10:30.080 --> 00:10:32.040 But right at this moment, 00:10:32.500 --> 00:10:34.940 Jesus Christ, the
