our series on the book of 1 Samuel. 00:06:30.020 --> 00:06:35.879 And it's an amazing passage of scripture that speaks directly to so much of what's going on 00:06:35.879 --> 00:06:37.780 in our world and in our city. 00:06:37.779 --> 00:06:42.959 To the frustration, the anguish, the fear, and in many senses, 00:06:43.119 --> 00:06:45.500 the hopelessness of what's going on in our city. 00:06:45.859 --> 00:06:52.019 Because in this passage, David is overwhelmed by the hopelessness of his situation. 00:06:52.819 --> 00:06:56.919 And it's a passage that has encouraged me this week, and I hope it will encourage you. 00:06:57.000 --> 00:07:00.799 And so, let's dive in and see what God wants to say to us this morning. 00:07:01.399 --> 00:07:02.699 1 Samuel chapter 30. 00:07:03.419 --> 00:07:05.519 And there's a couple of things I think God wants to say to us. 00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:11.459 But the first one I want us to note is take note of God's suffering servant. 00:07:12.060 --> 00:07:13.159 God's suffering servant. 00:07:13.879 --> 00:07:18.539 The context is that David and his band of soldiers, about 600 of them, 00:07:18.979 --> 00:07:24.060 have fled Israel and are living in Palestine, in Philistine country. 00:07:24.759 --> 00:07:26.740 And they're living in a town called Ziklag, 00:07:26.859 --> 00:07:30.240 which is a city that one of the Philistine kings gave to them. 00:07:30.479 --> 00:07:33.139 And the deal was you can live here, you can stay here, 00:07:33.139 --> 00:07:36.959 but if we ever go into battle, you've got to join us and come and fight with us. 00:07:37.659 --> 00:07:43.599 And later on, the Philistines go into battle with Israel, 00:07:43.740 --> 00:07:46.500 or they line up their forces to attack Israel. 00:07:46.659 --> 00:07:48.599 That's the context of the story last week. 00:07:49.279 --> 00:07:51.919 And this king says to David and his band, you've got to come with us. 00:07:52.519 --> 00:07:55.019 And David's in a tight spot because he's an Israelite, 00:07:55.079 --> 00:07:57.099 but now he might need a fight against the Israelites. 00:07:57.100 --> 00:08:00.060 But fortunately, when they get to the front lines, 00:08:00.180 --> 00:08:02.700 the other Philistine kings say to them, 00:08:02.800 --> 00:08:06.820 there's no chance we're going to let Israelites come in the midst of us. 00:08:06.939 --> 00:08:09.260 These guys are going to sabotage our own agenda. 00:08:09.379 --> 00:08:11.240 They're going to turn around and fight against us. 00:08:11.860 --> 00:08:16.180 And what better way for David to win over the favor of the Israelites than to turn on us? 00:08:16.660 --> 00:08:19.860 And so they chase them away and say, get out of here, go back to your hometown. 00:08:19.860 --> 00:08:24.879 So David and his men tread three days across the desert to go back to Ziklag. 00:08:25.740 --> 00:08:30.020 And when they get there, there's a devastating scene that awaits them. 00:08:30.960 --> 00:08:34.659 Their town has been raided, has been destroyed. 00:08:35.700 --> 00:08:41.360 And all that remains is the smoldering smoke of the ruins of their city. 00:08:42.580 --> 00:08:46.800 The people are gone, their wives and children are nowhere to be found, 00:08:47.279 --> 00:08:49.000 and their homes have been destroyed. 00:08:49.860 --> 00:08:53.220 And this is obviously a devastating situation. 00:08:53.379 --> 00:08:55.840 We've all seen the pictures of what's been happening in Ukraine. 00:08:56.120 --> 00:09:00.279 In many ways, this is the situation that David and his men come back to. 00:09:00.800 --> 00:09:05.720 But coming off the back of everything that's been happening to David these last 10 years, 00:09:06.240 --> 00:09:08.720 constantly on the run, chased by Saul. 00:09:08.820 --> 00:09:11.320 As soon as they get some reprieve, they're chased another way. 00:09:11.320 --> 00:09:15.420 They're now living in enemy territory, the Philistines, always looking over their back, 00:09:15.500 --> 00:09:18.500 always wondering when the next attack is going to come. 00:09:18.500 --> 00:09:24.240 And wave after wave of bad news has hit David and his men. 00:09:24.299 --> 00:09:26.960 And you can almost sense the exhaustion that they feel. 00:09:27.500 --> 00:09:30.019 Look at what they say in verse 3 and 4. 00:09:30.120 --> 00:09:33.080 Now that their homes have been destroyed and their families have been kidnapped, 00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:33.720 it says, 00:09:33.820 --> 00:09:35.759 When David and his men came into the city, 00:09:36.120 --> 00:09:37.519 they found it burnt with fire. 00:09:37.620 --> 00:09:39.759 Their wives and their children were taken captive. 00:09:40.440 --> 00:09:42.740 David and the men who were with him raised their voices, 00:09:42.919 --> 00:09:46.799 and they wept until they had no more strength left to weep. 00:09:46.799 --> 00:09:52.419 They don't know it at this time, but their families have been kidnapped. 00:09:52.620 --> 00:09:54.319 As far as they know, they could have been killed. 00:09:55.419 --> 00:09:58.740 And everything around them seems utterly hopeless. 00:09:59.620 --> 00:10:02.779 And as if that's not bad enough, look at verse 6b. 00:10:03.879 --> 00:10:04.159 It says, 00:10:04.159 --> 00:10:18.139 These soldiers that David had amassed were people that were themselves once bitter in soul. 00:10:18.579 --> 00:10:20.959 Chapter 22 tells us they had come under David's wing. 00:10:21.079 --> 00:10:23.059 David had looked after them and nurtured them. 00:10:23.120 --> 00:10:26.579 He had been a father to those that were kind of cast out. 00:10:26.580 --> 00:10:28.720 And now they're talking of Stonyham. 00:10:28.800 --> 00:10:32.000 There's mutiny in the ranks. 00:10:33.759 --> 00:10:38.660 Friends, one of the sobering messages for us from this passage is that 00:10:38.660 --> 00:10:43.120 there are times when you think that things can't possibly get any worse. 00:10:44.300 --> 00:10:47.500 And then 1 Samuel 30 tells us that yes, they can. 00:10:48.420 --> 00:10:52.640 There are times when you feel like your present situation is the last straw. 00:10:52.800 --> 00:10:54.400 Things can't get any more difficult. 00:10:54.580 --> 00:10:56.000 There can't be any more pressure. 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:57.940 You can't take any more. 00:10:58.600 --> 00:10:59.679 And then you come to Ziklak. 00:11:00.480 --> 00:11:03.100 And it's the last straw after the last straw. 00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:06.820 And I thought about this quite a bit after last week's sermon. 00:11:06.919 --> 00:11:10.860 Last week's sermon was quite heavy with darkness and hopelessness. 00:11:10.980 --> 00:11:12.440 And I thought a lot about it. 00:11:12.480 --> 00:11:14.940 The fact that for those of us that are followers of Jesus, 00:11:15.740 --> 00:11:18.840 God never promises that because you have followed Jesus, 00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:20.799 He will excavate you out of the darkness. 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:24.299 He never promises that, yes, there's light in the darkness. 00:11:24.299 --> 00:11:26.259 Yes, there's hope in the midst of the hopelessness. 00:11:26.740 --> 00:11:32.199 But followers of Jesus are not immune or inoculated against the struggles and the difficulties of life. 00:11:33.339 --> 00:11:35.939 This is where God's people have lived for centuries. 00:11:35.940 --> 00:11:40.760 And we sometimes look at Saul and say, okay, well, he was a bad guy. 00:11:40.820 --> 00:11:41.460 He deserved it. 00:11:41.500 --> 00:11:42.280 But here's David. 00:11:42.780 --> 00:11:44.100 Here's David's servant. 00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:45.160 The servant of the Lord. 00:11:45.220 --> 00:11:47.300 The one who's chosen to deliver his people. 00:11:47.420 --> 00:11:50.400 The one who lives with integrity and uprightness of heart. 00:11:50.500 --> 00:11:51.340 A good man. 00:11:51.340 --> 00:11:54.540 And yet he's a servant of the Lord who suffers terribly. 00:11:54.720 --> 00:11:56.920 He is a suffering servant. 00:11:58.019 --> 00:11:59.060 Friends, what about you? 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:02.040 How are you getting tested positive and the possibility of being separated in the coming weeks and months. 00:12:14.360 --> 00:12:16.519 Maybe you've been reading the news. 00:12:16.639 --> 00:12:19.480 Maybe there's loved ones that are far away and they are sick. 00:12:20.060 --> 00:12:24.060 With all that's going on, have you felt like, I don't know if I can take any more? 00:12:24.240 --> 00:12:25.639 I've come to the end. 00:12:26.779 --> 00:12:29.600 Friends, throughout the century, God's people have often dwelt here. 00:12:31.360 --> 00:12:37.539 And yet, in the midst of the darkness, David, the suffering servant, knows what to do. 00:12:38.379 --> 00:12:42.039 Because David knows how to strengthen himself in God's grace. 00:12:42.039 --> 00:12:44.919 David's back is against the wall. 00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:47.879 And it seems like everything is utterly hopeless. 00:12:48.159 --> 00:12:51.659 It's not just that life has dealt him bad blow after bad blow. 00:12:52.099 --> 00:12:57.639 It's not just that he, God seems to have repaid his integrity with difficulty and harshness. 00:12:58.099 --> 00:13:01.980 And never mind all that you're going to be king when they talk that Samuel once gave him. 00:13:02.039 --> 00:13:05.839 That seems like a distant pipe dream into the long way away. 00:13:06.240 --> 00:13:09.699 But now the men that he took under his wing are plotting against him. 00:13:09.819 --> 00:13:11.099 And so what should David do? 00:13:12.039 --> 00:13:13.339 Friends, what should we do? 00:13:14.079 --> 00:13:19.419 When the darkness closes in and feels claustrophobic, what should we do? 00:13:20.819 --> 00:13:23.559 Well, look what David does in verse 6b. 00:13:24.519 --> 00:13:29.939 In last week's passage, verse 6 was one of the most lamentable verses in the whole Bible. 00:13:30.099 --> 00:13:33.639 It talks about how Saul cries out to God and all he gets is silence. 00:13:34.339 --> 00:13:37.319 Well, in our passage today, verse 6 is one of the most instructive. 00:13:37.799 --> 00:13:38.879 Because look at what it says. 00:13:38.879 --> 00:13:40.360 David was greatly distressed. 00:13:40.460 --> 00:13:42.000 The people spoke of stoning him. 00:13:42.179 --> 00:13:45.759 Because all the people were bitter in Saul, each for his own sons and daughters. 00:13:46.600 --> 00:13:51.259 But David strengthened himself in the Lord is God. 00:13:51.259 --> 00:14:02.319 Now, one of the things that the author of 1 Samuel has done is he's constantly wanting to contrast David versus Saul. 00:14:02.399 --> 00:14:05.899 That's why the narrative keeps on jumping between the two. 00:14:06.720 --> 00:14:14.059 And in this last two chapters, we've seen how Saul and David both experienced this deep crisis in their leadership. 00:14:14.259 --> 00:14:16.120 Both of them, their lives are on the line. 00:14:16.120 --> 00:14:19.860 And yet, you'll remember what Saul did when he's greatly distressed. 00:14:20.039 --> 00:14:21.379 He uses the same Hebrew word. 00:14:21.919 --> 00:14:27.379 He runs to the medium of Endor to consult the dead in order to try and preserve his life. 00:14:28.360 --> 00:14:30.360 But look at what David does here in contrast. 00:14:30.759 --> 00:14:32.179 David doesn't run out there. 00:14:32.379 --> 00:14:34.259 David doesn't try and preserve his life. 00:14:35.120 --> 00:14:38.679 David strengthens himself in the Lord his God. 00:14:38.679 --> 00:14:45.959 Friends, this could hardly be more instructive to us than at a time like this. 00:14:46.500 --> 00:14:49.899 When so many have felt that things can't get any more difficult. 00:14:50.039 --> 00:14:52.519 When things can't possibly get any more restrictive. 00:14:52.699 --> 00:14:55.399 When the bad news can't get any worse. 00:14:56.539 --> 00:15:00.239 Maybe some of us, as you said, are fearful for the next few weeks or months. 00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:02.799 Maybe some of us are facing job loss. 00:15:11.520 Where do we turn when the dark night of the soul gets that much darker? 00:15:13.280 --> 00:15:16.640 When David was greatly distressed because the people started smoking him, 00:15:16.960 --> 00:15:20.380 he strengthened himself in the Lord his God. 00:15:21.000 --> 00:15:22.840 And notice the language here. 00:15:22.980 --> 00:15:24.600 I don't know if you remember from last week. 00:15:25.440 --> 00:15:28.440 The passage where Saul eventually does speak to Samuel. 00:15:29.680 --> 00:15:31.720 Saul says to Samuel, he says, 00:15:32.280 --> 00:15:35.420 I'm in distress and God has turned away from me. 00:15:35.419 --> 00:15:39.219 And the word he uses for God there is a generic Hebrew word for God. 00:15:39.740 --> 00:15:41.299 It's almost as if Saul is describes David here. 00:15:55.919 --> 00:15:59.839 When David was distressed and anguish, he strengthened himself in the law. 00:15:59.939 --> 00:16:01.519 That's the personal name for God. it was like a light just pierced all the anxiety in my heart. 00:21:24.900 --> 00:21:26.320 And God just said to me, 00:21:26.320 --> 00:21:29.019 Kevin, there are things that are beyond your control.
