or God's omnipotence. 00:00:53.979 --> 00:00:55.299 These are very clear. 00:00:55.419 --> 00:01:02.179 There's very clear instances in scripture where God and his character are revealed, that God characteristics that we hear often. 00:01:15.620 --> 00:01:25.040 However, we're looking this morning at God's impassibility, something that isn't talked 00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:26.020 about all that much. 00:01:26.200 --> 00:01:34.760 Not because George skirts around the issue or it's something that is extremely controversial. 00:01:35.380 --> 00:01:39.140 It's because it's just a lesser talked about doctrine. 00:01:39.140 --> 00:01:45.379 The idea behind the impassibility of God is that God is incapable of suffering. 00:01:45.859 --> 00:01:48.280 He is incapable of being overwhelmed. 00:01:48.960 --> 00:01:52.120 And he is incapable of being overcome by anything. 00:01:53.040 --> 00:01:59.780 So the idea is in the kind of the older sense of the word passion, like Jesus' passion, Jesus' 00:01:59.980 --> 00:02:05.040 suffering, that God is incapable of suffering. 00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:08.479 So that's where we get this term, the impassibility of God. 00:02:09.139 --> 00:02:15.379 And this actually goes hand in glove with what Shane preached on last week on God's unchangingness 00:02:15.379 --> 00:02:18.979 or his immutability, that God never changes. 00:02:19.239 --> 00:02:20.619 And we must take these things together. 00:02:20.699 --> 00:02:29.500 In fact, like I mentioned a few weeks ago, the last time I opened up God's word at Messiah, 00:02:29.979 --> 00:02:34.179 is that these attributes of God, they are to be taken together. 00:02:34.180 --> 00:02:42.020 We do not have the liberty to pick and choose God's attributes. 00:02:42.719 --> 00:02:46.780 We can't treat God like a buffet where we go there. 00:02:46.860 --> 00:02:47.939 There's many different options. 00:02:48.200 --> 00:02:52.939 And we are bypassing the noodles and going straight for the stir fry. 00:02:52.939 --> 00:03:00.159 It is, we don't have the luxury of picking, okay, I really like God being omnipotent, but this 00:03:00.159 --> 00:03:05.139 idea of him being omnipresent everywhere, it seems a bit far-fetched. 00:03:05.219 --> 00:03:06.039 I don't really like that. 00:03:06.819 --> 00:03:08.639 We don't have that luxury. 00:03:08.859 --> 00:03:14.819 So this attribute of God, it's deeply important. 00:03:14.819 --> 00:03:25.359 In fact, I want to put forward to you this morning that the impassibility of God is the key characteristic of God 00:03:25.359 --> 00:03:28.739 by which we can have assurance of our salvation. 00:03:31.719 --> 00:03:36.959 We preach that when you put your hope and faith and trust in Jesus, 00:03:37.879 --> 00:03:42.180 his grip on us, on you, is greater than your grip on him. 00:03:42.180 --> 00:03:46.700 That if you are his, you are adopted by grace. 00:03:47.219 --> 00:03:49.099 He isn't going to unadopt you. 00:03:49.200 --> 00:03:51.939 You're not heading back to some kind of spiritual orphanage. 00:03:54.000 --> 00:04:01.340 The impassibility of God is key in this, in understanding a true and hearty assurance of salvation. 00:04:02.480 --> 00:04:05.860 So it's important that we do our best to get this right. 00:04:05.860 --> 00:04:15.280 It is not an easy doctrine to talk about because although, of course, we can say that God doesn't suffer, 00:04:15.460 --> 00:04:20.759 it opens up a lot of issues that we might find in the Bible. 00:04:22.160 --> 00:04:29.000 There are some stories, there are some passages in the Scripture that seem to contradict this idea that God does not suffer, 00:04:29.139 --> 00:04:32.040 or God does not change, or God isn't overwhelmed. 00:04:32.040 --> 00:04:38.080 So, we're first, this morning, we're going to look at this idea of divine impassibility. 00:04:38.200 --> 00:04:39.660 What does it mean for God not to suffer? 00:04:40.560 --> 00:04:42.780 For God not to be overwhelmed? 00:04:43.020 --> 00:04:50.040 The second thing is we're going to try to tackle these apparent contradictions in the Scriptures when we read about it. 00:04:50.040 --> 00:04:51.340 And I'll have a few examples. 00:04:52.140 --> 00:04:54.400 And then, at the end, why does this matter for us? 00:04:54.960 --> 00:04:55.759 Why is it so key? 00:04:55.800 --> 00:04:58.460 I talked about assurance of salvation, but why? 00:04:58.459 --> 00:05:01.239 Why does it give us true assurance of salvation? 00:05:03.419 --> 00:05:09.019 So first, let's take a look at what does this actually mean, God's impassibility. 00:05:09.959 --> 00:05:12.799 God is completely immune to suffering. 00:05:14.919 --> 00:05:20.779 With God being fully sovereign and fully omnipotent, meaning that he is fully powerful, 00:05:20.899 --> 00:05:23.459 there's no power greater than him, 00:05:23.500 --> 00:05:26.779 it means that there is no greater power that rivals him. 00:05:26.779 --> 00:05:37.079 There is no great power that will somehow influence God to do something contrary to his will, 00:05:37.319 --> 00:05:40.299 or to his character, or to his knowledge. 00:05:41.519 --> 00:05:45.119 It's not as if God is all-powerful, 00:05:45.699 --> 00:05:50.319 but in the sense of God is 1A, but there's something else that's like a 1B. 00:05:50.319 --> 00:05:55.779 We have to understand that God being all-powerful, completely omnipotent, 00:05:56.379 --> 00:06:04.860 means that if God has all power, there is an unbreachable chasm for the next powerful being. 00:06:05.420 --> 00:06:08.000 And a big part of that is because God has created everything. 00:06:08.139 --> 00:06:14.399 He is the only uncreated being, and that everything in existence is his creation. 00:06:14.399 --> 00:06:22.239 And therefore, he is completely, completely powerful, more powerful than, infinitely powerful than his creation. 00:06:23.099 --> 00:06:26.979 So that God, what follows is that God can't be overwhelmed. 00:06:27.339 --> 00:06:29.239 He can't be overcome by anything. 00:06:29.359 --> 00:06:31.959 He's unaffected by anything whatsoever. 00:06:31.959 --> 00:06:38.379 There is no outside influence that can somehow cause God to second-guess, 00:06:38.879 --> 00:06:40.680 or to regret, 00:06:41.579 --> 00:06:49.060 or to somehow expose his lack of love, 00:06:49.159 --> 00:06:51.579 or his lack of mercy, or his lack of justice. 00:06:52.459 --> 00:06:54.819 That God is completely perfect. 00:06:55.199 --> 00:06:57.099 He is completely other than. 00:06:57.100 --> 00:07:02.640 And as such, he doesn't have any unrealized potential. 00:07:03.640 --> 00:07:06.879 So for us, maybe you've known some people, 00:07:06.980 --> 00:07:08.540 maybe you are one of these people, 00:07:08.640 --> 00:07:10.900 where there was a lot of promise for you when you were younger, 00:07:11.540 --> 00:07:15.820 and you grew up, and you didn't quite meet expectations. 00:07:15.920 --> 00:07:18.320 Whether they're your expectations, or parents, or whatever. 00:07:19.300 --> 00:07:22.160 But there's unmet expectations. 00:07:22.439 --> 00:07:24.480 There's unrealized potential. 00:07:24.480 --> 00:07:27.160 In God, there's none of that. 00:07:28.020 --> 00:07:35.020 In God, there is the very definition of what love is, 00:07:35.060 --> 00:07:38.439 of what mercy, and justice, and compassion us to be overwhelmed. 00:08:43.080 --> 00:08:52.320 A flirty interaction with your spouse or somebody that you might be interested in, 00:08:52.460 --> 00:08:56.220 that is an outside influence that can level you for the day. 00:08:56.980 --> 00:08:59.360 Like, just totally, totally take over. 00:08:59.360 --> 00:09:05.519 At the same time, if that spouse is frustrated at you 00:09:05.519 --> 00:09:12.639 or a pass at, you know, somebody you're interested in isn't reciprocated, 00:09:13.159 --> 00:09:17.180 that can also just, it can feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. God loves us so that we might love him back and fill a void in his life, 00:10:09.360 --> 00:10:12.519 in his eternal being, because there is none. 00:10:12.519 --> 00:10:16.720 God is completely Never to the extent of God. 00:11:03.259 --> 00:11:05.059 So we understand this as an analogy. 00:11:05.059 --> 00:11:10.099 We're analogous to God, not equal to God in that way. 00:11:10.779 --> 00:11:18.819 --> 00:11:20.079 He has no beginning and no end. 00:11:20.879 --> 00:11:22.079 We have a beginning. 00:11:22.219 --> 00:11:27.479 Our hope in Christ is that we will not have an end and be with him for eternity. 00:11:27.559 --> 00:11:28.459 But we've had a beginning. 00:11:28.460 --> 00:11:36.620 We can't claim of ourselves, like God can, that he has always existed. 00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:45.300 Unlike God, we can't claim that we're omnipresent, that we're everywhere at once. 00:11:45.379 --> 00:11:47.560 These are unique to God. 00:11:48.840 --> 00:11:50.700 And impassibility is one of those things. 00:11:51.300 --> 00:11:56.200 And it's important that we understand this creature-creator distinctive. 00:11:56.200 --> 00:12:04.300 Oftentimes, in our culture, actually in our cultures, maybe that's a better way of talking about it, 00:12:04.720 --> 00:12:06.740 we try to switch the roles. 00:12:07.780 --> 00:12:19.460 We try to put ourselves as God and then kind of use God as a tool, as a means for our own benefit, 00:12:19.560 --> 00:12:21.080 as if God could be manipulated. 00:12:21.080 --> 00:12:27.280 But with this idea of impassibility, God is completely other than nothing at all that can prevent God from being God. 00:13:29.679 --> 00:13:41.559 Consider the Greek and Roman gods who are given to flights of rage, 00:13:42.179 --> 00:13:47.239 who are manipulated, who are given to lust and war. 00:13:47.659 --> 00:13:51.059 There is an inconsistency in them. 00:13:52.379 --> 00:13:56.839 In the Hindu pantheon, there is constant struggle. 00:13:57.139 --> 00:13:59.120 There's no almighty God. 00:13:59.679 --> 00:14:05.639 God, our God that we see in scriptures, 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:08.120 is completely other than any other God. 00:14:08.419 --> 00:14:10.699 Any other God in any other faith tradition, 00:14:11.399 --> 00:14:13.939 he is completely, completely other than. 00:14:15.659 --> 00:14:19.459 And again, we don't talk about the However, it's moments, sermons like these that help us actually read the Bible better. 00:14:43.820 --> 00:14:48.779 So, for instance, I mentioned that there seems to be contradictions in the few examples. 00:14:56.919 --> 00:15:01.379 God negotiates with Abraham before destroying Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:15:01.599 --> 00:15:09.739 He negotiates as if there is some kind of influence that Abraham might have on God. 00:15:10.879 --> 00:15:14.259 God seems to rage only to calm down, 00:15:14.519 --> 00:15:18.339 be calmed down by Moses with the idolatry of the nation of Israel. 00:15:18.340 --> 00:15:23.580 Somehow, Moses convinces God to change his mind, 00:15:23.780 --> 00:15:27.200 his wrath towards Israel. 00:15:28.220 --> 00:15:33.399 Also, God anoints King Saul to be king, 00:15:33.960 --> 00:15:35.740 and King Saul blunders, 00:15:36.340 --> 00:15:39.300 and God says that he regrets the decision 00:15:39.300 --> 00:15:42.480 that he made to anoint King Saul. 00:15:43.019 --> 00:15:44.940 It's a kind of repentance, is it not? 00:15:44.940 --> 00:15:48.040 I mean, not because God somehow sinned, 00:15:48.060 --> 00:15:51.240 but because God made a decision that he needs to correct. 00:15:53.480 --> 00:15:56.120 How does that jive with impassibility? 00:15:58.660 --> 00:16:00.760 This is, it's a good question. 00:16:00.800 --> 00:16:01.860 And if you're 00:16:09.120 and you're like, man, you're not reading the Bible properly, 00:16:09.120 --> 00:16:11.220 or maybe it's making you squirm, 00:16:11.300 --> 00:16:12.440 or making you feel uncomfortable, 00:16:12.440 --> 00:16:16.640 it's a good thing because you're wanting to be faithful to the Scriptures, 00:16:16.760 --> 00:16:17.760 and that's what we want to do. 00:16:18.400 --> 00:16:21.020 But a few things that we need to consider 00:16:21.020 --> 00:16:25.320 as we hold on to this doctrine of impassibility 00:16:25.320 --> 00:16:30.420 and then encounter a seemingly impassible God in the 00:16:37.700 --> 00:16:43.379 Article 20 says that we ought not to expound 00:16:43.379 --> 00:16:48.840 one part of Scripture over against another part. 00:16:48.900 --> 00:16:50.120 That might contradict it. 00:16:50.320 --> 00:16:51.200 So here's an example. 00:16:52.340 --> 00:16:53.180 It says in the Scriptures 00:16:53.180 --> 00:16:57.840 that God is spirit. 00:16:58.000 --> 00:16:58.780 He doesn't have a body. 00:17:00.080 --> 00:17:03.520 And yet, he rescues Israel from Egypt with what? 00:17:03.519 --> 00:17:06.680 A strong arm and an outstretched hand. 00:17:06.779 --> 00:17:09.519 I don't know if it's an outstretched arm and a strong hand. 00:17:09.639 --> 00:17:11.099 I get those things mixed up. 00:17:11.119 --> 00:17:11.839 But the point is, 00:17:12.500 --> ultimately it is this grand story. 00:18:29.059 --> 00:18:31.039 And God describes himself as what? 00:18:31.119 --> 00:18:33.399 He describes himself as a father 00:18:33.399 --> 00:18:35.779 and as a king 00:18:35.779 --> 00:18:38.799 and as a lord 00:18:38.799 --> 00:18:40.419 and as a lover 00:18:40.419 --> 00:18:42.299 and as a shepherd 00:18:42.299 --> 00:18:43.579 and as a husband. 00:18:45.259 --> 00:18:46.699 How does he describe us? 00:18:47.519 --> 00:18:50.199 He describes us as his bride, 00:18:50.359 --> 00:18:51.299 as sheep. 00:18:51.299 --> 00:18:53.579 We are not
