awards or achievements or skills behind their name. 00:05:50.800 --> 00:05:54.439 One of the major themes in the book of Samuel is godly leadership. 00:05:55.939 --> 00:06:01.540 And as I said, in this chapter, we're introduced to the one who had become the greatest leader, 00:06:01.819 --> 00:06:04.980 perhaps the greatest leader in the history of Israel, King David. 00:06:04.980 --> 00:06:13.920 And what this passage is showing us is how to recognize the leader God chooses. 00:06:16.080 --> 00:06:21.040 And what we'll see here, we'll see four things. 00:06:21.120 --> 00:06:23.000 We'll see one way, one thing. 00:06:23.319 --> 00:06:25.480 First, how not to recognize a leader. 00:06:26.180 --> 00:06:29.180 And then three qualities of how we can recognize a leader. 00:06:29.180 --> 00:06:34.519 So first, you can't recognize a leader by outward appearance. 00:06:35.579 --> 00:06:37.139 Okay, this is verses 1 to 12. 00:06:38.240 --> 00:06:41.360 And really, verse 7 is a key Saul, or if you've been here the last several weeks as we've been looking at the story of King Saul, 00:07:19.459 --> 00:07:24.199 at the beginning, Saul seemed great by outward appearances. 00:07:24.199 --> 00:07:34.959 He's described in the beginning of chapter 9 as from a wealthy family, had the connections, a handsome young man, a head taller than anyone else. 00:07:35.959 --> 00:07:42.779 And in a society where he was going to be a military leader, not just an administrator shuffling papers somewhere, 00:07:42.879 --> 00:07:45.039 but he was going to lead the armies out to battle. 00:07:45.879 --> 00:07:47.379 Man, he was a head taller than anybody else. 00:07:47.459 --> 00:07:49.919 He was, that's the man you want to follow. 00:07:49.920 --> 00:07:53.680 Look at him. 00:07:55.340 --> 00:08:00.580 But in the end, as we saw last week, Saul didn't listen to God's word. 00:08:01.780 --> 00:08:05.300 And at the end of chapter 15, God says to Samuel, or Samuel says to Saul, 00:08:05.439 --> 00:08:10.180 because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king. 00:08:10.900 --> 00:08:12.280 Chapter 15, verse 23. 00:08:12.279 --> 00:08:16.419 And so in this chapter, God says to Samuel, it's time to move on. 00:08:17.599 --> 00:08:24.759 You know, we're not just going to, you're not just going to spend the rest of your life being sad over Saul not working out. 00:08:25.359 --> 00:08:26.619 I've got another plan. 00:08:26.819 --> 00:08:27.639 We're going ahead. 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:31.859 And I'm not waiting for the people to demand another king. 00:08:32.039 --> 00:08:34.600 I'm going to go, I'm going to lead you on my own initiative. 00:08:34.600 --> 00:08:38.980 And so he tells him, go to Jesse, who lives in Bethlehem.
