And maybe we don't think about it much, but I guess church 00:00:15.060 --> 00:00:26.100 is one of the few public places where people will sing together regularly and often. I imagine 00:00:26.100 --> 00:00:32.660 for those of us who are Christians here today, we have favorite psalms, we have favorite hymns that 00:00:32.660 --> 00:00:39.120 we sing, those ones that we really look forward to in public worship, indeed those that in ways make 00:00:39.120 --> 00:00:46.320 up the soundtrack for our lives, those ones that we turn back to when times are hard, those songs that 00:00:46.320 --> 00:00:54.160 we turn to when we find ourselves rejoicing. There's a power, there's a beauty in the songs that God's 00:00:54.159 --> 00:01:02.939 people sing. As we sing together, they unite us in our faith. They are both worship that we offer to 00:01:02.939 --> 00:01:08.420 our God, but they are also a testimony to one another. We remind ourselves, we encourage one 00:01:08.420 --> 00:01:16.259 another about the truths that we believe about our God and about our salvation. As we sing, we can bring 00:01:16.260 --> 00:01:24.960 courage to our faith. We can bring comfort in the midst of despair. We find at the end of Zephaniah's 00:01:24.960 --> 00:01:32.719 prophecy so much singing and rejoicing. So for those of us who haven't been here for the last couple of 00:01:32.719 --> 00:01:39.640 weeks, as we've worked our way through Zephaniah's prophecy, he keeps bringing our attention to the day 00:01:39.640 --> 00:01:46.719 of the Lord. This decisive moment in history when God will judge his enemies and wickedness once and 00:01:46.719 --> 00:01:55.420 for all, and will establish his kingdom that will never end. In chapter 1, the message was, 00:01:55.920 --> 00:02:04.420 be silent, because the day of the Lord brings awesome judgment. And in the light of God's holiness 00:02:04.420 --> 00:02:11.180 and his justice, there was that call to be ready. In chapters 2, in the beginning of chapter 3, 00:02:11.520 --> 00:02:19.140 there was that call to seek the Lord, for God's faithful people to wait with hope for that deliverance 00:02:19.140 --> 00:02:27.259 that would come with the day of the Lord. And now as we come to chapter 3, verses 11 to 20, 00:02:27.259 --> 00:02:37.000 we're invited to understand that for those whose faith is in Jesus, we will rejoice on the day of the Lord. 00:02:37.780 --> 00:02:45.799 And we're given songs, joyful songs, to sing about our great God and Savior and the salvation that he gives 00:02:45.799 --> 00:02:56.099 to us. Zephaniah tells us that we should sing the gospel, that we should celebrate together the good news of 00:02:56.099 --> 00:03:04.759 God's salvation. But more than that, there's a second song, another gospel song, and a beautiful song. 00:03:04.959 --> 00:03:13.039 And in some ways, maybe it's even harder for us to appreciate. It seems almost too mind-blowing in its reality, 00:03:13.039 --> 00:03:20.039 because as we listen in, and especially to verse 17 there, we're told of our God and Savior, 00:03:20.039 --> 00:03:29.019 who positively sings with joy over his redeemed people. That's part of the gospel. So in these two 00:03:29.019 --> 00:03:38.180 songs that we're going to think about, we are invited by our loving Savior God to enjoy his salvation in 00:03:38.180 --> 00:03:46.899 the present, and to recognize that this salvation gives hope for our future also. So we're going to 00:03:46.900 --> 00:03:54.500 focus first of all on the song of salvation, just to recognize one or two things before we get into 00:03:54.500 --> 00:04:01.400 the content. Who is singing? First of all, look with me at verse 14. It says, sing, daughter Zion, 00:04:01.920 --> 00:04:08.780 shout aloud Israel, be glad and rejoice with all your heart, daughter Jerusalem. All that language is 00:04:08.780 --> 00:04:16.500 intended to say, it's the people of God who are singing this song. In chapters 2, verses 7 and 9, 00:04:16.500 --> 00:04:24.500 it's the people of God who are described as the remnant, those who remain faithful, even as the rest of 00:04:24.500 --> 00:04:31.839 society turned away from God. Those who place their hope in God continue to trust in him. Then last week, 00:04:32.519 --> 00:04:40.500 we remember in chapter 3, verses 9 and 10, the people of God are a global community of worshipers. 00:04:40.500 --> 00:04:48.839 It's people drawn from many peoples, all united in the praise of God. So when we hear daughter Zion, 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:57.199 Israel, Jerusalem, it's a picture of the united gathered people of God. And there's a beautiful 00:04:57.199 --> 00:05:03.459 transformation that's happened. You know, this city that is singing, at the beginning of chapter 1, 00:05:03.860 --> 00:05:10.339 it was a city known for being rebellious and defiled. So something has happened. Here is a people who've been 00:05:10.339 --> 00:05:18.839 redeemed by God's grace. And so this city that was so corrupt becomes a great choir singing praise to 00:05:18.839 --> 00:05:25.579 God. And this city choir represents God's church in all times and places. It represents us if our faith 00:05:25.579 --> 00:05:34.679 is in Jesus this evening. So that's who is singing. I want us also to notice how they are singing. What's the 00:05:34.680 --> 00:05:43.040 tone? Some of you might know the musical comedian Bill Bailey. He's an incredibly talented musician. 00:05:43.180 --> 00:05:49.240 He's a funny guy as well. Well, he has a great sketch on the difference between the major key and the 00:05:49.240 --> 00:05:55.259 minor key. And one of the things he does in that sketch is he flips the American national anthem and he 00:05:55.259 --> 00:06:03.180 plays it all in minor key. And it moves from being really celebratory and rejoicing to sound really gloomy. 00:06:04.099 --> 00:06:07.879 What's the tone? What's the tone here in verse 14? 00:06:10.079 --> 00:06:16.759 Sing, shout aloud, be glad and rejoice with all your heart. 00:06:16.759 --> 00:06:24.539 This is joy. This is sing your heart out. Worship for the people of God. 00:06:26.819 --> 00:06:35.779 It's also a song of faith. In verse 15, it says the Lord has taken away your punishment. He has 00:06:35.779 --> 00:06:44.360 turned back your enemy. But at the time of Zephaniah's prophecy, this hadn't happened yet. 00:06:44.360 --> 00:06:51.780 This is a salvation that is to come, but it is so certain because it's rooted in God's character 00:06:51.780 --> 00:07:00.139 and promise that they can sing with that confident expectation that it will happen. So they are waiting 00:07:00.139 --> 00:07:08.020 people, but they're waiting with joy and expectation. Because they're confident in God's character and 00:07:08.019 --> 00:07:11.939 promises they can sing of future salvation. 00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:17.019 I think in that sense it captures where we find ourselves today. 00:07:17.839 --> 00:07:19.959 You know, we stand between these two 00:07:19.959 --> 00:07:23.939 comings of the Lord Jesus. Jesus has come once in humility and he's 00:07:23.939 --> 00:07:27.759 come and he's done that decisive act to save us by dying 00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:31.839 and rising, but we're still awaiting people. We're waiting for his return. 00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:37.879 For that once and for all end to evil, for establishing the new creation. But we are 00:07:37.879 --> 00:07:43.879 invited to wait with joy, confident in God's character and his promises. 00:07:45.239 --> 00:07:48.479 So that's who's singing and how they're singing. Let's think about what are they singing. 00:07:49.059 --> 00:07:54.059 And what they're singing here at the end of chapter three are redemption songs. 00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:56.859 They're singing the gospel. 00:07:56.860 --> 00:08:01.980 So again, just to remind ourselves of some of the themes that we've been thinking about in Zephaniah, 00:08:02.540 --> 00:08:10.540 as the Old Testament people of God anticipate the day of the Lord, as they anticipate the Lord Jesus 00:08:10.540 --> 00:08:16.540 coming to bring the day of the Lord, there were notes where we thought about his first coming. 00:08:17.340 --> 00:08:24.840 They were looking forward to God being with his people, to God coming to purify, to gather a people to himself. 00:08:24.839 --> 00:08:31.339 But there are also these notes that speak of his second coming, of dealing with evil and establishing 00:08:31.339 --> 00:08:37.600 the new creation. And even as we come to these final songs of salvation, we're going to hear some 00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:44.860 of these different notes and melodies running through. One note that we definitely hear in this section 00:08:44.860 --> 00:08:52.620 of chapter three of this song of salvation is of shame removed. So take a look at verse 11. 00:08:52.620 --> 00:09:02.320 On that day, you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame for all the wrongs you have done to me. 00:09:03.279 --> 00:09:10.740 Because I will remove from you your arrogant boasters. Never again will you be haughty on my holy hill. 00:09:10.740 --> 00:09:20.100 There is this picture running all the way from verse 11 to verse 15 of a city under siege, a city under attack. 00:09:20.440 --> 00:09:26.659 It's a scene we are all too familiar with as we watch our news cycles play out. 00:09:26.879 --> 00:09:33.860 But now the scene has changed. Now it's of a city that is safe and secure because the attackers have been turned back. 00:09:33.860 --> 00:09:41.560 And peace has been established. And this city that had known humiliation now honor returns. 00:09:43.919 --> 00:09:51.159 Zephaniah and the other Old Testament prophets had that job of warning Jerusalem of attack and exile that would happen. 00:09:51.240 --> 00:09:53.659 It happened with the Babylonians in 586. 00:09:53.659 --> 00:10:00.779 And as the prophets announced that they were also calling the people to a patient trust in their Savior. 00:10:01.059 --> 00:10:05.439 And to anticipate that transformation of fortunes. 00:10:06.159 --> 00:10:08.980 And here there is this picture of a city that is transformed. 00:10:09.279 --> 00:10:10.159 How is it transformed? 00:10:10.339 --> 00:10:13.539 It's transformed firstly because the proud are removed. 00:10:13.899 --> 00:10:16.480 Those who turn their back on God and say we don't need God. 00:10:16.819 --> 00:10:17.879 The proud have been removed. 00:10:17.879 --> 00:10:22.740 The humble are being kept. 00:10:23.179 --> 00:10:24.820 Those who take refuge. 00:10:24.879 --> 00:10:26.939 Those who trust in the Lord. 00:10:29.939 --> 00:10:35.580 And we discover there are people who have been made pure by the work of God. 00:10:35.679 --> 00:10:36.720 They will do no wrong. 00:10:36.840 --> 00:10:38.480 They will tell no lies. 00:10:38.559 --> 00:10:39.700 They're walking in justice. 00:10:40.179 --> 00:10:42.059 They're walking with truth. 00:10:43.039 --> 00:10:45.320 And then you get this lovely picture at the end of verse 13. 00:10:45.320 --> 00:10:46.960 They will eat and lie down. 00:10:47.879 --> 00:10:49.460 And no one will make them afraid. 00:10:50.919 --> 00:10:54.159 Zephaniah brings back that shepherd and sheep image. 00:10:54.399 --> 00:11:00.860 So the city is transformed in our mind's eye from a peaceful place that knows honor return. 00:11:01.159 --> 00:11:02.299 Now it's like a sheepfold. 00:11:03.120 --> 00:11:04.720 Where there's absolute security. 00:11:05.320 --> 00:11:11.299 God the shepherd allowing his faithful people who trust in him to rest secure. 00:11:12.480 --> 00:11:13.919 He guards the gates. 00:11:13.919 --> 00:11:16.639 He cares and keeps. 00:11:17.879 --> 00:11:22.799 The question that we need to ask is how can this transformation happen? 00:11:22.899 --> 00:11:29.679 How can the shameful nation, God's very honest, you've acted shamefully towards me. 00:11:29.740 --> 00:11:35.240 How can this rebellious city, how can their shame turn to honor? 00:11:35.240 --> 00:11:40.899 And we need to ask that because that then becomes really personal when we think about ourselves. 00:11:42.460 --> 00:11:46.060 We rebel against God's word and God's law. 00:11:46.860 --> 00:11:50.860 We carry the shame of our sin and our guilt. 00:11:51.000 --> 00:11:56.399 How can our shame, how can anyone's shame be turned to honor in God's eyes? 00:11:56.399 --> 00:11:59.959 We need to hear the gospel. 00:11:59.959 --> 00:12:05.419 Galatians 3, 13 to 14 tells us how. 00:12:07.759 --> 00:12:09.879 Galatians 3, 13 and 14. 00:12:10.039 --> 00:12:17.620 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. 00:12:17.620 --> 00:12:22.860 For it is written, cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree. 00:12:23.639 --> 00:12:32.379 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus 00:12:32.379 --> 00:12:37.720 so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. 00:12:37.720 --> 00:12:39.940 Here's how it happens. 00:12:40.460 --> 00:12:47.000 Jesus takes the curse and the shame that we should have to face the penalty for 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:52.860 and he dies there on the cross on our behalf, redeeming us, setting us free 00:12:52.860 --> 00:12:57.120 so that we might know blessing, so that we might know honor, 00:12:57.480 --> 00:13:01.160 so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit and knowing God with us 00:13:01.160 --> 00:13:03.019 so we can sing for joy. 00:13:03.019 --> 00:13:11.720 Because in the gospel, through Jesus, shame is removed and turned to honor. 00:13:13.639 --> 00:13:19.939 There's another note in this song of salvation that speaks of removal, 00:13:20.139 --> 00:13:23.779 this time of punishment removed. 00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:28.679 Verse 14 into verse 15. 00:13:28.679 --> 00:13:32.939 Sing, shout aloud, be glad and rejoice with all your heart, 00:13:33.019 --> 00:13:36.579 daughter Jerusalem, the Lord has taken away your punishment, 00:13:36.960 --> 00:13:40.399 he has turned back your enemy. 00:13:41.659 --> 00:13:46.919 So again, throughout Zephaniah, there is that honest warning from God's Word 00:13:46.919 --> 00:13:52.960 of judgment that falls on sin, on rebellion against God, 00:13:53.059 --> 00:13:57.120 on injustice and idolatry of many kinds. 00:13:57.120 --> 00:14:03.720 But here, the people of God have a promise that on the day of the Lord, 00:14:05.080 --> 00:14:07.700 the punishment would be removed. 00:14:09.080 --> 00:14:12.080 Those enemies would be taken away. 00:14:13.500 --> 00:14:17.139 And key to this is the end of verse 15. 00:14:17.139 --> 00:14:31.840 Over and over in Zephaniah's prophecy, he is giving hope to the city, 00:14:31.980 --> 00:14:33.659 which represents the people of God, saying, 00:14:33.659 --> 00:14:38.319 the Lord is with you, the Lord is in you, do not fear. 00:14:40.679 --> 00:14:42.439 If we want to think about it in other terms, 00:14:42.519 --> 00:14:44.799 it's like when you watch the Batman movies, 00:14:45.539 --> 00:14:48.039 it's like the hope for Gotham City. 00:14:48.219 --> 00:14:50.719 Okay, the Joker is here, or whoever the bad guy is, 00:14:50.959 --> 00:14:53.719 and they're causing terror, but Batman comes, 00:14:54.319 --> 00:14:55.799 and the scene changes. 00:14:55.799 --> 00:15:02.779 Or it's the joy of Narnia, when Aslan comes and goes into battle. 00:15:03.219 --> 00:15:09.539 There is joy for the people of God, knowing God is with us. 00:15:10.039 --> 00:15:14.620 It's the Lord Jesus who is near, and he fights for us. 00:15:14.979 --> 00:15:20.199 And so there's this gracious promise for those whose faith is in Jesus, 00:15:21.079 --> 00:15:23.039 of salvation beyond judgment, 00:15:23.039 --> 00:15:27.259 that here is the Lord of covenant faithfulness. 00:15:28.159 --> 00:15:31.360 And he announces that words from Zephaniah and applies them to Jesus. 00:15:54.959 --> 00:15:57.240 John 12, 13 to 15, 00:15:57.319 --> 00:16:00.699 they took palm branches and went out to meet him, 00:16:00.819 --> 00:16:01.819 shouting, Hosanna! 00:16:02.539 --> 00:16:05.079 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:16:05.279 --> 00:16:07.879 Blessed is the King of Israel. 00:16:09.079 --> 00:16:11.500 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it. 00:16:11.539 --> 00:16:12.419 As it is written, 00:16:12.419 --> 00:16:15.979 Do not be afraid, daughter Zion. 00:16:16.699 --> 00:16:18.799 he is riding right into the heart 00:16:46.980 --> 00:16:49.379 and into the heat of spiritual battle 00:16:49.379 --> 00:16:52.159 for you and for me, 00:16:53.019 --> 00:16:56.539 taking the punishment so we don't have to. 00:16:58.580 --> 00:17:01.159 Jesus moves from this, 00:17:01.480 --> 00:17:04.339 you know, being greeted with great joy shortly after 00:17:04.339 --> 00:17:06.699 to going to the cross to die. 00:17:06.859 --> 00:17:08.939 And there that great reversal happens 00:17:08.939 --> 00:17:11.740 where Jesus takes his people's punishment 00:17:11.740 --> 00:17:14.359 and
