I would love to meet you and get to know 00:04:41.019 --> 00:04:46.479 you a little bit better. Now, as a church, we are working through Matthew's gospel. And 00:04:46.479 --> 00:04:53.399 one of the things that we've seen is Matthew's gospel is deeply challenging and encouraging, 00:04:53.659 --> 00:04:58.259 all at the same time. And that's one of the ways that you know that you're meeting the real Jesus. 00:04:58.620 --> 00:05:04.680 Jesus has this incredible ability to both comfort us and challenge us together at the same time. And 00:05:04.680 --> 00:05:10.000 it's certainly been like that over the last couple of weeks. Now, today we're going to get to a very, 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:17.040 very important and significant juncture in Matthew's gospel. It's an incredibly important passage for 00:05:17.040 --> 00:05:22.519 Christians in general, but especially for us at Watermark Church, given our values and who we are 00:05:22.519 --> 00:05:29.579 as a church and how important we take gospel community and mission. Matthew, at this point that 00:05:29.579 --> 00:05:37.720 we're reading today, is going to make a significant change in direction or a pivot as he pivots the focus 00:05:37.720 --> 00:05:43.580 from who Jesus is and the life and ministry of Jesus to the life and ministry of Jesus' followers. 00:05:44.440 --> 00:05:49.440 And so if you're a Christian here today, if you've ever asked the question, what does Jesus expect from 00:05:49.440 --> 00:05:55.360 me? What is Jesus calling me to do? What is my calling in life? I want you to listen up. Today's 00:05:55.360 --> 00:06:02.660 passage is going to help us to answer that question. And so let's dive straight in. Look at Matthew 00:06:02.660 --> 00:06:08.640 chapter 9, verse 35 with me. It's the first verse in the passage that we read today. Matthew 00:06:08.640 --> 00:06:14.060 describes Jesus' ministry like this. He says, Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, 00:06:14.880 --> 00:06:20.020 teaching their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease 00:06:20.020 --> 00:06:27.500 and affliction. Now, that verse should be familiar to most of us at Watermark. And the reason is 00:06:27.500 --> 00:06:32.939 because a couple of weeks ago, we spent three weeks in Matthew chapter 4, where Jesus calls 00:06:32.939 --> 00:06:38.180 his first disciples. Remember, he calls Simon Peter and his brother Andrew and James and John, 00:06:38.300 --> 00:06:43.360 these two brothers, two groups of brothers that are both fishermen. And he says, follow me. And 00:06:43.360 --> 00:06:47.959 they leave their father's nest and they follow him. And then in Matthew chapter 4, verse 23, 00:06:48.220 --> 00:06:53.620 it says this, let me get the slider. And Jesus went throughout all Galilee, teaching their 00:06:53.620 --> 00:06:58.560 synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, healing every disease and affliction among the 00:06:58.560 --> 00:07:07.180 people. You see what's happening here? In Matthew chapter 4, Matthew describes the life and the 00:07:07.180 --> 00:07:11.139 ministry of Jesus. And there are two main things that Jesus does. He goes around preaching and teaching 00:07:11.139 --> 00:07:18.220 and healing the physical needs of the people around him. In Matthew chapter 9, our passage today, 00:07:18.220 --> 00:07:24.240 Matthew gives almost the identical sentence. It's almost identical, word for word. Jesus went 00:07:24.240 --> 00:07:30.400 throughout all their cities and villages, preaching and teaching and healing every disease and affliction. 00:07:31.180 --> 00:07:36.160 And Matthew gives us these two identical sentences, which describe the life and the ministry of Jesus, 00:07:36.160 --> 00:07:45.680 because he wants to show us that Jesus's life was full of power and authority, both in word and in deed. 00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:51.340 Jesus went about proclaiming the gospel and then also healing the sick and the afflicted. 00:07:51.800 --> 00:07:58.420 You could say that Jesus, everywhere he went, went around announcing the gospel and then demonstrating 00:07:58.420 --> 00:08:05.180 the gospel with his lifestyle. Jesus went throughout the cities and the villages, teaching their synagogues, 00:08:05.319 --> 00:08:11.220 proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing everyone with every disease and affliction. 00:08:11.220 --> 00:08:18.100 Now, Matthew has arranged his gospel very, very carefully. As you read through Matthew's gospel, 00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:22.420 you see there's nothing that's just left to chance. He's arranged it extremely carefully. 00:08:23.300 --> 00:08:28.320 And one of the things that we see in Matthew's gospel, the way that he's done this is he's 00:08:28.320 --> 00:08:33.200 sent these two sentences almost like a book ends. You know, when you've got a book, a shelf, 00:08:33.440 --> 00:08:36.820 and you've got all these books, and you put these two book ends to keep everything in order. 00:08:36.820 --> 00:08:43.240 Matthew's put these two sentences, chapter 4 verse 23 and chapter 9 verse 35, almost as two book ends, 00:08:43.420 --> 00:08:50.280 these identical sentences, in this section of his gospel. And in between these two book ends is 00:08:50.280 --> 00:08:54.340 everything that we've looked at the last four weeks and what we looked at two years ago. 00:08:55.180 --> 00:09:01.060 In Matthew chapter 5, 6, and 7 is the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus' famous authoritative teaching on 00:09:01.060 --> 00:09:05.960 what life in the kingdom looks like. And then chapters 8 and 9 is everything we've looked at the last four 00:09:05.960 --> 00:09:11.200 weeks. Those ten miracles accounts where Jesus casting out demons, healing the sick, raising the 00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:17.440 dead, healing the paralytics, healing Jairus' daughter, the centurion's servant, Jesus healing 00:09:17.440 --> 00:09:24.180 every disease and affliction. And so in chapter 4, Matthew announces Jesus' life and ministry, 00:09:24.340 --> 00:09:30.600 what it's going to consist of. In chapter 9, he summarizes, and in between, he's got what Jesus' 00:09:30.600 --> 00:09:36.540 life and ministry looks like. Proclaiming and teaching the gospel and going about and doing 00:09:36.540 --> 00:09:44.360 good. Jesus' life full of authority in word and deed. Jesus announcing and demonstrating the arrival 00:09:44.360 --> 00:09:52.620 of God's kingdom on earth. Jesus went out throughout the villages and towns, teaching the synagogues, 00:09:52.860 --> 00:09:57.300 proclaiming the gospel of God's kingdom, and healing every disease and affliction. 00:09:57.299 --> 00:10:06.719 But then look at what Jesus does, or what Matthew does, in chapter 10, verse 1. This is what we read. 00:10:07.699 --> 00:10:13.819 Jesus called to him his ten disciples, and he gave them authority over every unclean spirit 00:10:13.819 --> 00:10:20.839 to cast them out and to heal every disease and every affliction. Look at chapter 10, verse 5 and 8. 00:10:21.539 --> 00:10:26.500 He says, then Jesus sent the twelve out and instructed them, saying, as you go, 00:10:26.500 --> 00:10:32.259 say this, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, announcing the kingdom. And what should you do? 00:10:32.720 --> 00:10:40.340 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Jesus commissioned his disciples to 00:10:40.340 --> 00:10:47.080 go and do the exact thing that Matthew's just been telling us for five chapters Jesus did, 00:10:47.659 --> 00:10:52.279 announcing the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and affliction. 00:10:52.279 --> 00:10:58.199 And so what's Matthew trying to show us here? This is the big idea of the passage. This is what we 00:10:58.199 --> 00:11:03.919 have to understand if we're going to make sense of what's going on here. If you're going to understand 00:11:03.919 --> 00:11:09.740 anything about today, you've got to know this. To be a follower of Jesus, maybe we can get the next 00:11:09.740 --> 00:11:16.879 slider, doesn't just mean having your sins forgiven so that you can one day go to heaven. Rather, it means 00:11:16.879 --> 00:11:24.000 being so infused with his kingdom that his life and mission becomes our own life and mission. 00:11:24.720 --> 00:11:29.120 Okay, let me say that again. Being a follower of Jesus doesn't just mean having your sins forgiven 00:11:29.120 --> 00:11:35.379 so that one day you can go to heaven. It means being so infused with the kingdom and the power and the 00:11:35.379 --> 00:11:41.559 life of God that his life and mission starts to become our own life and mission. And we see that 00:11:41.559 --> 00:11:47.559 exact thing here. Jesus, for five chapters, has been announced in the kingdom and healing all those 00:11:47.559 --> 00:11:53.559 that are afflicted. And then he says to his disciples, go and announce the kingdom and heal all those that 00:11:53.559 --> 00:12:03.359 are afflicted and with disease. And sometimes we can think of Christianity as merely this amnesty or this 00:12:03.359 --> 00:12:10.079 forgiveness of sins so that one day we can get to heaven. We kind of think of it as a vaccination drive, 00:12:10.080 --> 00:12:15.360 right? Everyone's talking about vaccinations at the moment. This vaccine against the virus of sin. 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:22.160 And we can sometimes think that churches are all part of this vaccination drive to try and get as 00:12:22.160 --> 00:12:27.060 many people vaccinated as possible. And there's a bit of debate, right? Which vaccine should we take? 00:12:27.120 --> 00:12:31.520 Should we take the Baptist vaccine? Should we take the charismatic vaccine? Should we take the mega 00:12:31.520 --> 00:12:38.480 church vaccine or the house church vaccine? And it's all about just trying to get vaccinated so that we can 00:12:38.480 --> 00:12:43.700 get the certificate so that when we get to heaven, we can say, look, God, I got vaccinated against sin. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:50.480 You should let me in. And so we tend to think of it as some, as Christianity, some divine vaccination 00:12:50.480 --> 00:12:56.080 to obtain in order to get the certificate and hopefully get back to our normal lives. 00:12:57.759 --> 00:13:03.379 But when Jesus come and announces the kingdom, he's not announcing a sin vaccination. 00:13:03.379 --> 00:13:10.360 Of course, the forgiveness of sin is probably the most important aspect of the kingdom of God. It's the entrance 00:13:10.360 --> 00:13:15.059 into the kingdom of God. It's the way we get to know God. It's the way we have relationship with God. 00:13:15.460 --> 00:13:20.600 Without forgiveness of sin, there is no entrance into God's kingdom. Without the forgiveness of sin, 00:13:20.659 --> 00:13:26.340 we are under condemnation. We are under God's wrath and his judgment. We will for all eternity be 00:13:26.340 --> 00:13:32.639 separated with God. We will bear the own consequences of our sin. Jesus came to die on the cross to 00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:39.199 pave a way for us to be removed from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God's son by having 00:13:39.199 --> 00:13:44.840 our sins forgiven. Of course, forgiveness of sins is vitally, vitally important. If you're still 00:13:44.840 --> 00:13:50.879 holding on to your own self-righteousness, friends, you're in bad, bad way. I've got bad news for you. 00:13:51.240 --> 00:13:57.700 You cannot save yourself unless you come to Jesus and ask him to take away your sin. But Christianity is 00:13:57.700 --> 00:14:03.379 not merely about the forgiveness of sins. It's about being transferred from one kingdom, 00:14:03.379 --> 00:14:09.960 the kingdom of self, the kingdom of me, the kingdom of this world, which is all about me and my world 00:14:09.960 --> 00:14:18.040 and my selfishness, the kingdom that always leads to death and destruction and joining his kingdom, 00:14:18.660 --> 00:14:27.060 his kingdom of light and life, his kingdom of grace and mercy, his kingdom that always leads 00:14:27.059 --> 00:14:34.379 to life. Friends, when Jesus said, follow me, he was calling us to forsake our own kingdoms 00:14:34.379 --> 00:14:42.619 and to orientate our lives around his kingdom and himself, the kingdom that leads to life. 00:14:43.500 --> 00:14:49.139 And so that's what Matthew wants us to see here. Having seen and experienced Jesus' life and ministry, 00:14:49.279 --> 00:14:55.839 he then sends his disciples out to go and do the exact same things that Jesus has been doing, 00:14:55.840 --> 00:15:03.220 which is to bring hope in the gospel and healing, demonstrating the gospel, to wherever they went, 00:15:03.320 --> 00:15:08.800 announcing the good news of God's kingdom and healing the needs of those around them. 00:15:09.820 --> 00:15:15.639 And that's incredibly important. What does it mean to be a Christian? It means to so orientate our 00:15:15.639 --> 00:15:21.259 lives and be so infused with his kingdom that Jesus' life and mission becomes our life and mission. 00:15:21.259 --> 00:15:27.819 Jesus sends us out as his followers to say, as you have received, so now give. 00:15:28.460 --> 00:15:36.100 Join me on my kingdom adventure, gospel announcing, proclamation adventure into the cities in which you live. 00:15:37.139 --> 00:15:42.960 And so let's look at this passage some more. And what we're going to see here is four essential 00:15:42.960 --> 00:15:48.620 ingredients that we all need in order to live out the mission and the calling of God. 00:15:48.620 --> 00:15:55.679 Friends, if you don't want to waste your life, we have to see these four essential ingredients in this passage 00:15:55.679 --> 00:16:00.480 that we need in order to live out the mission that God is calling us on. 00:16:00.899 --> 00:16:07.820 Okay, so let's dive in and look. And the first one is this. We see the great ingredient of compassion. 00:16:08.960 --> 00:16:15.539 Compassion. Look at chapter 9, verse 36 with me. Matthew here tells us about Jesus. 00:16:15.539 --> 00:16:45.519 It says, 00:16:45.539 --> 00:16:49.519 like Hong Kong, one of the most unequal cities in the world. 00:16:49.759 --> 00:16:54.459 Time magazine just ran this article a few years ago on South Africa. You might not be able to see the cover, 00:16:54.559 --> 00:17:01.419 but the cover picture of Time magazine is all these houses with swimming pools and big gardens and driveways. 00:17:02.019 --> 00:17:09.539 And across the road are thousands and thousands of tin shacks where families of five, six people will live 00:17:09.539 --> 00:17:21.519 without any running water or electricity. And when you first get to Cape Town, one of the things that strikes you is every single traffic light you arrive at, 00:17:21.519 --> 00:17:25.940 someone will knock on your window asking for $2 or $5 to buy a meal. 00:17:25.940 --> 00:17:30.420 But after a couple of years of living there, you just get numb to it. 00:17:30.860 --> 00:17:36.559 After saying no so many times and being asked so many times, your heart just gets hard and numb to it. 00:17:36.559 --> 00:17:45.139 And when you first arrive, you think, how on earth can people live like, can ordinary citizens live and be so numb to the poverty here? 00:17:45.859 --> 00:17:49.000 But it's the same reason that we are like that in Hong Kong. 00:17:49.139 --> 00:17:57.619 Here in Hong Kong, we have people living in cage homes, people living in stairwells, people living in illegal dwellings on rooftops. 00:17:57.619 --> 00:18:00.739 We have whole families living in subdivided apartments. 00:18:00.879 --> 00:18:05.579 And just across the road, we will have very expensive luxury apartments. 00:18:06.839 --> 00:18:08.159 How is this possible? 00:18:09.379 --> 00:18:15.859 Friends, familiarity numbs our hearts to what's going on right before our very eyes. 00:18:16.159 --> 00:18:18.959 And we lose a sense of compassion. 00:18:20.099 --> 00:18:22.759 But Jesus has incredible compassion. 00:18:23.000 --> 00:18:26.819 Jesus never got familiar with the brokenness he saw around him. 00:18:26.819 --> 00:18:31.399 Jesus looks around him and his heart breaks with compassion. 00:18:31.779 --> 00:18:34.059 Matthew tells us that Jesus saw. 00:18:35.079 --> 00:18:37.559 He saw the crowds around him. 00:18:37.599 --> 00:18:40.659 And he had compassion on them because he saw their condition. 00:18:41.220 --> 00:18:44.079 Their state was like sheep that had no leader. 00:18:44.779 --> 00:18:49.339 I don't know if you've ever seen one of those BBC series with David Attenborough when he narrates them. 00:18:49.379 --> 00:18:52.159 And you see those animals maybe on the plains of Africa. 00:18:52.160 --> 00:18:59.500 And one of the maybe fragile animals, a limp one or one that was born prematurely, is separated from the herd. 00:18:59.620 --> 00:19:03.980 And you see the lions coming around them just waiting to tear it apart. 00:19:03.980 --> 00:19:06.700 Jesus saw the people of his day. 00:19:06.700 --> 00:19:13.920 And he saw what sin and the brokenness of this world and the religious systems of this world, apart from the gospel, had done to them. 00:19:14.240 --> 00:19:17.700 And he saw that they were harassed, which means they're being torn apart. 00:19:18.640 --> 00:19:19.339 They're helpless. 00:19:19.460 --> 00:19:22.440 They're being left there with nobody to come to their rescue. 00:19:22.440 --> 00:19:28.799 And his heart is broken and moved within him because of what he sees, the people around him. 00:19:29.519 --> 00:19:34.660 The word compassion is compassio, which where you feel like your stomach is being tied into a knot. 00:20:00.680 --> 00:20:03.579 And you literally feel the agony in your gut. 00:20:04.639 --> 00:20:07.059 Jesus is saying this is what he felt. 00:20:07.599 --> 00:20:15.480 That his stomach was tight within him as he saw the pain and the brokenness of people around him. 00:20:18.039 --> 00:20:23.599 Four times in Matthew's gospel, Matthew describes Jesus having compassion, 00:20:23.960 --> 00:20:27.639 either on the crowds or on individuals around him. 00:20:28.200 --> 00:20:32.720 As he saw the consequences of being citizens of the kingdom of this world. 00:20:33.399 --> 00:20:36.379 A kingdom that, as we said, always leads to death. 00:20:37.200 --> 00:20:41.759 Death of relationships, death of self-respect, death of identity. 00:20:44.399 --> 00:20:46.099 Always leads to suffering. 00:20:46.099 --> 00:20:49.839 Remember two weeks ago we looked at Matthew chapter 9. 00:20:50.339 --> 00:20:52.259 Jesus is in Matthew's house. 00:20:53.339 --> 00:20:55.199 He's surrounded by tax collectors and sinners. 00:20:55.359 --> 00:20:58.419 He's surrounded by some of the most hated and despised people of his day. 00:20:59.219 --> 00:21:00.740 And he's loving it. 00:21:00.859 --> 00:21:01.879 He loves to be there. 00:21:02.639 --> 00:21:02.879 Why? 00:21:02.980 --> 00:21:05.059 Because he loves the outcasts of society. 00:21:05.199 --> 00:21:07.299 He loves the very people that no one else loves. 00:21:07.859 --> 00:21:10.599 He loves those that are hurting and he loves to be with them. 00:21:11.500 --> 00:21:14.179 Jesus says it's not the well that need a doctor. 00:21:14.180 --> 00:21:15.640 It's those that are sick. 00:21:15.960 --> 00:21:21.140 And I, the great physician, have come to bring through angels, 00:23:42.319 --> 00:23:43.319 but through people. 00:23:44.039 --> 00:23:48.319 And through ordinary people, sometimes insecure people, sometimes immature people, 00:23:48.879 --> 00:23:51.299 people like me, people like you. 00:23:51.299 --> 00:23:55.099 I think that's the point of chapter 10 verse 2 to 4, 00:23:55.220 --> 00:23:59.139 where Jesus names his disciples, his People who are prepared to suffer. 00:31:06.839 --> 00:31:13.240 A couple of years ago, a man by the name of Victor Kooligan wrote a book called 10 Things I Wish Jesus Had Never Said. 00:31:14.240 --> 00:31:17.099 In his preface, Kooligan writes this. 00:31:17.859 --> 00:31:24.219 He says, in our modern world, with the rise of health and wealth, gospel and prosperity preaching. 00:31:24.339 --> 00:31:31.279 So in other words, churches that are just saying, Jesus wants you to just be happy and healthy and wealthy and, you know, that kind of Christianity. 00:31:31.819 --> 00:31:36.139 He says, we've become accustomed to a comfortable, what a friend I have in Jesus, Messiah. 00:31:36.140 --> 00:31:38.820 It's a picture of Jesus' light. 00:31:38.820 --> 00:31:40.880 Great taste, less demanding. 00:31:41.620 --> 00:31:47.400 But this version of Jesus is just interested in my happiness and nothing more. 00:31:48.300 --> 00:31:54.620 This version of Jesus wants me to be financially comfortable, physically fit, mentally and emotionally stable. 00:31:54.619 --> 00:32:01.639 This version of Jesus would never demand of me anything that would cause any of these basic goods to be missed or challenged. 00:32:02.779 --> 00:32:13.659 Difficulties, trials, hardships in my life seem to only be there because of my lack of faith on my part to believe that Jesus truly wants me to be happy. 00:32:13.660 --> 00:32:26.620 Friends, there's a version of Christianity, I dare say, often promulgated more in the West than in Asia, that thinks that the goal of Christianity is God wants me to be happy and moral. 00:32:27.519 --> 00:32:31.160 And other than that, I don't need to bother with him and he doesn't need to bother with me. 00:32:31.160 --> 00:32:35.500 Kuligan goes on to write in his book, he says, 00:32:35.740 --> 00:32:39.000 Yet the truth is, the teaching of Jesus was often harsh. 00:32:39.880 --> 00:32:42.580 He was not a preacher of convenience, but hardship. Jesus, I'll follow you wherever you go. 00:32:51.840 --> 00:32:53.980 And Jesus says, just be prepared. 00:32:54.100 --> 00:32:57.200 Remember, foxes of holes, the birds of the air have a place to lay 00:33:50.400 He says, indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ will be persecuted. 00:33:50.400 --> 00:33:56.019 In the New Testament, normal Christianity is one that involves suffering and opposition. 00:33:56.759 --> 00:34:00.380 For Christians to be persecuted for following Jesus is not abnormal. 00:34:00.940 --> 00:34:02.820 Remember how the Apostle Peter writes it. 00:34:02.860 --> 00:34:03.480 He says this. 00:34:03.820 --> 00:34:08.700 Beloved, do you not be surprised when fiery trials come upon you to test you, 00:34:08.980 --> 00:34:11.160 as though something strange were happening to you? 00:34:12.019 --> 00:34:17.139 Jesus says that, friends, this is what normal Christianity is. 00:34:17.139 --> 00:34:21.099 And there's so much in our passage, we're not unfortunately going to get to all of it. 00:34:21.159 --> 00:34:26.299 But I want to encourage you to read through Matthew chapter 10, our passage today, slowly and carefully. 00:34:26.440 --> 00:34:50.059 --> 00:34:53.059 You're going to try and demonstrate the gospel with the best of motives. 00:34:53.179 --> 00:34:55.659 And people will twist your motives and accuse you of things. to the problems before us. 00:37:48.019 --> 00:37:51.559 People tell us they're going through a difficult time and we often say, I'll pray for you. 00:37:52.019 --> 00:37:55.460 Which a euphemism is for, I don't really want to get involved. 00:37:55.819 --> 00:37:57.139 I don't really know how to deal with it. 00:37:57.139 --> 00:38:00.119 So, let's just end the conversation. 00:38:01.019 --> 00:38:03.039 But that's not the kind of prayer Jesus is calling us to. 00:38:03.400 --> 00:38:12.259 The kind of prayer Jesus is calling us to is kingdom come, whole life orientated, laboring, struggling, wrestling with God in prayer. 00:38:12.900 --> 00:38:15.980 The Apostle Paul describes Epaphras in Colossians chapter 4. 00:38:15.980 --> 00:38:24.740 He says, here is a man, a servant of Christ, one who is always laboring fervently, struggling in prayer on your behalf. 00:38:25.519 --> 00:38:26.780 Prayer is a battle. 00:38:26.940 --> 00:38:28.119 It's spiritual warfare. 00:38:28.380
