at verses 13 through 23, 00:00:42.340 --> 00:00:50.439 but by way of reminder, recall how we've gotten to where we've gotten in the simplest way to summarize the first 11 chapters. 00:00:51.159 --> 00:00:54.359 Paul sums it up in chapter 12 verse 1 by saying, 00:00:54.960 --> 00:00:57.939 the mercies of God, which is everything he's presented prior to that, 00:00:57.939 --> 00:01:04.480 I will say that salvation comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone forever. 00:01:05.439 --> 00:01:10.780 In light of this, we are to offer our bodies as living sacrifices. 00:01:11.579 --> 00:03:35.219 So let's see if we can look at it together, 00:03:35.219 --> 00:03:37.120 wrap our minds around it together, 00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:39.560 so that we're best equipped to do so. periphery things, 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:13.899 and now has freedom in Christ. 00:06:13.899 --> 00:06:18.959 The weak brother is the one who abstains because he's afraid of what may happen, 00:06:18.959 --> 00:06:23.739 who's still working out his faith in some sense by his work. 00:06:24.679 --> 00:06:25.279 Right? 00:06:25.279 --> 00:06:32.719 I think, though, we're too quick as Christians to stand in camps of the can-dos and the can't-dos. 00:06:32.939 --> 00:06:36.799 We make lists, we make signs, and we beat each other up with them. 00:06:37.679 --> 00:06:37.879 Right? 00:06:37.879 --> 00:06:44.240 And, specifically, Paul begins to address those who are the stronger brethren. 00:06:44.240 --> 00:06:50.680 Those who practice these liberties and how they ought to do so appropriately. 00:06:50.680 --> 00:06:55.740 Now, before we get into the specific exhortation found in verse 13, 00:06:55.939 --> 00:07:00.040 I want to make an overarching observation from the 00:07:18.459 --> 00:07:20.159 how does a clean thing, right, as Paul says, 00:07:20.420 --> 00:07:22.819 everything is clean, everything is permissible, 00:07:23.539 --> 00:07:26.120 become unclean or impermissible? 00:07:26.279 --> 00:07:27.519 How is it that that happens? 00:07:27.519 --> 00:07:31.279 And what we must notice here is that cleanliness and uncleanliness, 00:07:31.479 --> 00:07:33.879 or permissibility or impermissibility, 00:07:34.079 --> 00:07:37.459 is a matter of conscience and motive. 00:07:38.899 --> 00:07:39.560 Verse 14. 00:07:39.659 --> 00:07:44.279 Anyone who thinks it unclean, to them it is, in fact, unclean. 00:07:44.680 --> 00:07:49.680 Verse 22 and verse 23 speak to our conscience before God, 00:07:50.539 --> 00:07:54.719 knowing that we've been given permission by him in the Spirit. 00:07:55.680 --> 00:07:57.060 Let's look at some other texts. 00:07:57.060 --> 00:07:58.560 Titus 1.15. 00:07:59.860 --> 00:08:00.360 Paul writes, 00:08:00.459 --> 00:08:02.319 To the pure, all things are pure. 00:08:02.780 --> 00:08:04.819 But to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, 00:08:04.899 --> 00:08:08.879 but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. 00:08:09.800 --> 00:08:12.399 Mark chapter 7, verse 15. 00:08:13.279 --> 00:08:17.019 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, 00:08:17.220 --> 00:08:20.680 but the things that come out of a person are what defile him. 00:08:20.840 --> 00:08:21.560 This is Jesus speaking. 00:08:22.300 --> 00:08:25.879 There's nothing outside of a person by the commentary, 00:08:48.639 --> 00:08:51.620 Thus he declared all foods clean. 00:08:52.300 --> 00:08:56.840 So notice that what Jesus is saying is it's not those exterior things that ultimately really matter. 00:08:56.840 --> 00:09:00.360 What ultimately matters is our heart. 00:09:01.340 --> 00:09:02.879 And so the question must be asked, 00:09:03.040 --> 00:09:07.639 What do our actions, and in this text here, particularly about our liberty, 00:09:08.440 --> 00:09:10.240 say about our hearts? 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:13.019 What do they say about our faith? 00:09:13.680 --> 00:09:17.540 Do our actions say that our hearts are resting in God as our portion, 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:21.680 our sufficiency, our satisfaction, our treasure? 00:09:22.359 --> 00:09:25.439 Or do they say something else entirely? 00:09:26.579 --> 00:09:29.500 I'll give you an example from my own living. 00:09:30.179 --> 00:09:32.839 Many of you may not have noticed this, and that's quite alright, matter of eating or drinking. 00:11:01.700 --> 00:11:03.899 So we get too wrapped up into these periphery things 00:11:03.899 --> 00:11:06.120 and we miss the main point. 00:11:06.740 --> 00:11:08.279 Proverbs 4, 23 says, 00:11:08.279 --> 00:11:10.799 keep your heart with all vigilance, 00:11:10.879 --> 00:11:14.279 for from it flows the springs of life. 00:11:15.360 --> 00:11:16.740 So it's a matter of our heart. 00:11:16.879 --> 00:11:18.919 The clean becomes unclean 00:11:18.919 --> 00:11:21.639 because we have improper motivation. 00:11:22.339 --> 00:11:24.839 Our consciences cannot be
