eternal life? 00:06:13.980 --> 00:06:17.720 And initially, it looks like a pretty good question, doesn't it? 00:06:17.740 --> 00:06:20.520 What must I do to inherit eternal life? 00:06:21.200 --> 00:06:22.400 It seems to be a good question 00:06:22.400 --> 00:06:25.160 because it picks up what Jesus has just been saying 00:06:25.160 --> 00:06:27.060 in the previous chapter of Luke's Gospel. 00:06:28.280 --> 00:06:29.939 I mean, this man has come to Jesus 00:06:29.939 --> 00:06:33.819 and he's asking Jesus how he should follow Jesus. 00:06:35.420 --> 00:06:37.439 And we saw last week that the disciples, 00:06:37.439 --> 00:06:40.759 well, they haven't really understood what it means to follow Jesus. 00:06:41.480 --> 00:06:43.860 They understand that Jesus is the Christ, 00:06:43.860 --> 00:06:45.639 that he's God's anointed king. 00:06:47.660 --> 00:06:51.280 But they've not understood Jesus' call 00:06:51.280 --> 00:06:53.520 to follow him by denying themselves, 00:06:53.960 --> 00:06:56.520 by taking up their cross and following him. 00:06:57.639 --> 00:07:00.160 And so when this teacher of the law comes up to Jesus, 00:07:00.280 --> 00:07:02.400 we should find ourselves on the edge of our seats 00:07:02.400 --> 00:07:05.680 in anticipation when he asks, 00:07:06.180 --> 00:07:08.860 what must I do to inherit eternal life? 00:07:09.340 --> 00:07:10.879 I mean, it's a See, he seems to be spot on with his answer, doesn't he? 00:09:01.159 --> 00:09:04.959 I mean, even Jesus confirms his answer and says, 00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:07.100 Well, do this and you will live. 00:09:08.080 --> 00:09:10.400 What must I do to inherit eternal life? 00:09:11.120 --> 00:09:12.160 Well, the answer is simple. 00:09:12.340 --> 00:09:14.420 Love God and love your neighbor. 00:09:16.500 --> 00:09:17.860 But it does make you wonder, 00:09:17.980 --> 00:09:19.639 Well, if he knew the answer, 00:09:19.740 --> 00:09:22.040 why did he ask the question in the first place? --> 00:10:08.340 all that's already happened in this dialogue 00:10:08.340 --> 00:10:10.780 between Jesus and this expert in the law, 00:10:11.520 --> 00:10:14.100 it seems that it's all just a that we understand 00:11:27.879 --> 00:11:30.819 who it is who is asking Jesus this question. 00:11:31.779 --> 00:11:34.759 For Jesus knows this man's heart. 00:11:35.720 --> 00:11:37.899 And so he 00:11:59.580 --> 00:12:01.519 is a priest and a Levite. 00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:04.600 And what should we know about them? 00:12:04.600 --> 00:12:06.440 Well, they're both religious experts. 00:12:06.560 --> 00:12:08.420 They're both experts in the law. 00:12:09.100 --> 00:12:11.300 Just like the man speaking to Jesus, 00:12:11.480 --> 00:12:13.519 these two men both know the law. 00:12:15.019 --> 00:12:17.139 But it appears they know the letter of the law 00:12:17.139 --> 00:12:18.700 but not the essence of the law. 00:12:19.340 --> 00:12:20.240 They've got knowledge
