Let's listen to God's word to us today, starting in verse 1. 00:00:33.859 --> 00:00:49.439 At Caesarea, there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian cohort, a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people and prayed continually to God. 00:00:49.439 --> 00:00:57.699 About the ninth hour of the day, he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him, Cornelius. 00:00:58.199 --> 00:01:01.739 And he stared at him in terror and said, What is it, Lord? Town in South Africa. 00:07:49.159 --> 00:07:53.079 And I used to pastor a small church in Cape Town. 00:07:53.920 --> 00:07:57.079 And in Cape Town, crime is something that we have to live with. 00:07:57.079 --> 00:08:02.699 And one of the things that happens is every year at Christmas time and at Easter time, there is a whole lot of pickpocketing. 00:08:03.079 --> 00:08:06.740 So what will happen is you come to church and you put your bag down somewhere. 00:08:06.979 --> 00:08:10.680 And then you go and you talk to a friend or get coffee or go to the washroom. 00:08:10.680 --> know, South Africa had apartheid, this racial segregation. 00:10:16.799 --> 00:10:19.039 That ended in the 1990s. 00:10:19.559 --> 00:10:22.179 But Cape Town City is built for segregation. 00:10:22.379 --> 00:10:26.839 The highways, the sewerage systems, everything is built to separate black people from white people. 00:10:26.939 --> 00:10:28.219 And the white people live in the nice areas. 00:10:28.659 --> 00:10:30.240 And the black people in the not so nice areas. 00:10:30.539 --> 00:10:35.379 And the culture and the structure, the infrastructure of the city is built along racial lines. 00:10:36.139 --> 00:10:39.799 And Lux tells me his story of growing up in a home where his dad was constantly, 00:10:40.819 --> 00:10:43.839 his dad was a pastor but constantly oppressed by the white police. 00:10:43.840 --> 00:10:48.800 And he tells me what it's like to walk into a church that's 95% white, 00:10:49.139 --> 00:10:52.300 listening to a white preacher singing white people's songs, 00:10:52.580 --> 00:11:00.740 and what it feels like to be in a church where he feels unwelcome, unwanted, not good enough, not understood. 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:04.100 We're going to come back to Lux a little bit later. 00:11:04.560 --> 00:11:07.500 Now, as a church, we are going through the book of Acts. 00:11:07.780 --> 00:11:11.600 And the book of Acts is this wonderful account of how the gospel spreads 00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:16.340 from this small group of people in Jerusalem to the ends of the known world 00:11:16.340 --> 00:11:18.700 and within one generation and then beyond that. 00:11:19.259 --> 00:11:21.000 And the book of Acts is this amazing book. 00:11:21.100 --> 00:11:23.500 It continues in our day as the gospel spreads. 00:11:23.600 --> 00:11:25.960 It's the story of how God is at work. 00:11:26.220 --> 00:11:29.320 This is not the work of humanity or human beings. 00:11:29.779 --> 00:11:35.700 This is God by the work of his spirit and the power of Jesus changing the world upside down. 00:11:35.700 --> 00:11:39.520 But Acts chapter 10, which Chris and Hannah read to us, 00:11:39.520 --> 00:11:47.180 shows us the deep sinful tendency of the human heart to treat people who are different from us 00:11:47.180 --> 00:11:50.759 as not just being different, but as being undesirable. 00:11:51.460 --> 00:11:56.400 As those who are unlike us are not just unlike us, but they are unacceptable to us, 00:11:56.960 --> 00:12:00.759 unwanted by us, sometimes seen as unworthy by us. 00:12:00.759 --> 00:12:05.220 But in Acts chapter 10, we see how God goes about dismantling the prejudice 00:12:05.220 --> 00:12:07.439 and the discrimination that lies in our hearts. 00:12:08.159 --> 00:12:10.259 And so in this passage we're going to look at today, 00:12:10.679 --> 00:12:14.580 we're going to see that God is going to use this man called Peter, the great apostle Peter. 00:12:14.980 --> 00:12:18.779 But while God is using Peter, he's also going to change Peter. 00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:22.519 While God is going to use Peter to take the gospel to the ends of the earth, 00:12:22.600 --> 00:12:26.059 to this other person, this Gentile unbeliever called Cornelius, 00:12:26.159 --> 00:12:30.679 at the same time, God wants the gospel to get into Peter and change Peter himself. 00:12:31.340 --> 00:12:34.960 And so the gospel's got these two frontiers, the people out there that don't know Jesus, 00:12:35.220 --> 00:12:39.019 but also the hearts of those that do know Jesus himself. 00:12:39.779 --> 00:12:45.039 And friends, if this is true of Peter, how much more of it is true of me and maybe of us. 00:12:45.519 --> 00:12:49.559 Okay, so in this chapter, there are four kind of scenes to the story. 00:12:49.659 --> 00:12:51.519 And so let's run through them together. 00:12:51.679 --> 00:12:54.559 Okay, the first one will be quite quick and then we'll get into it. 00:12:54.559 --> 00:12:57.720 Scene one, Cornelius and the divine encounter. 00:12:57.720 --> 00:13:01.600 So the passage starts off, we meet this man called Cornelius. 00:13:01.720 --> 00:13:03.480 Cornelius is a Roman centurion. 00:13:03.840 --> 00:13:05.660 That means he's a ranking Roman soldier. 00:13:05.940 --> 00:13:07.840 He oversees about a hundred soldiers. 00:13:08.259 --> 00:13:10.500 It means he is wealthy and somewhat powerful. 00:13:10.700 --> 00:13:13.720 He is paid five times more, the average Roman soldier. 00:13:13.720 --> 00:13:17.420 But it also means he's an enemy to the Israelites. 00:13:17.720 --> 00:13:19.340 He is part of the occupying force. 00:13:19.500 --> 00:13:22.940 Those, the Romans, remember, they're the ones that crucified Jesus. 00:13:23.160 --> 00:13:25.960 They're the ones that are oppressing the Jews in Israel. 00:13:26.220 --> 00:13:28.800 He's part of the occupying force. 00:13:29.420 --> 00:13:34.879 He lives in Caesarea, which is the seat of the Roman government in this area, in the province of Judea. 00:13:35.100 --> 00:13:37.300 He's an enforcer of Roman law. 00:13:37.299 --> 00:13:41.899 But the story also tells us that he is a devout man. 00:13:42.179 --> 00:13:43.259 He's a God-fearing man. 00:13:43.339 --> 00:13:44.399 He's a man who prays. 00:13:44.799 --> 00:13:45.839 He's not a Jew. 00:13:46.259 --> 00:13:49.699 He's not welcome in the synagogue, but he's a spiritual seeker. 00:13:49.959 --> 00:13:53.639 He's got questions and he's seeking spiritual answers to his questions. 00:13:54.179 --> 00:13:59.179 He may be trying on faith, thinking, what does this look like and feel like to be a person of faith, 00:13:59.240 --> 00:14:01.740 a person who prays, a person who gives money to the poor. 00:14:02.079 --> 00:14:03.539 But he's a spiritual seeker. 00:14:03.539 --> 00:14:07.579 But one day, while he's praying, he sees a vision and an angel tells him, 00:14:07.959 --> 00:14:10.039 send a delegation to this place called Joppa. 00:14:10.159 --> 00:14:11.379 You'll find a man called Peter. 00:14:11.620 --> 00:14:12.219 Call him. 00:14:12.319 --> 00:14:13.419 He's got a message for you. 00:14:13.819 --> 00:14:14.740 And so he does. 00:14:15.699 --> 00:14:18.219 Scene two, Peter and the puzzling vision. 00:14:18.679 --> 00:14:25.620 While this is going on in Caesarea up north, down, God is also speaking to another man, Peter. 00:14:26.159 --> 00:14:29.500 Peter, the apostle Peter, is the representative of Jesus. 00:14:30.019 --> 00:14:31.299 He's also the disciple. 00:14:31.299 --> 00:14:36.740 Remember the guy who denied Jesus and always puts his foot in it and says stupid things. 00:14:37.039 --> 00:14:39.019 But Peter now is filled with the spirit. 00:14:39.139 --> 00:14:40.059 He's used by God. 00:14:40.179 --> 00:14:42.240 He preaches the great sermon and Pentecost. 00:14:42.639 --> 00:14:43.759 He's a powerful man. 00:14:43.959 --> 00:14:46.339 But notice, where is Peter? 00:14:47.079 --> 00:14:48.000 What town is he in? 00:14:48.919 --> 00:14:49.559 He's in Joppa. 00:14:50.279 --> 00:14:52.799 Anybody remember where we've come across Joppa recently? 00:14:53.919 --> 00:14:55.120 The book of Jonah. 00:14:55.279 --> 00:14:55.699 Do you remember? 00:14:56.120 --> 00:14:58.419 Remember in January, we looked at the story of Jonah. 00:14:58.419 --> 00:15:12.839 In the book of Jonah, God sends this prodigal prophet, this man called Jonah, to Nineveh, which is a city full of Gentiles, non-Jewish people, to tell them about the gospel, how God wants to save them from their sins and call them from repentance. 00:15:13.379 --> 00:15:18.679 But Jonah doesn't think that these Ninevites, these Assyrian Gentiles, deserve God's grace. 00:15:19.059 --> 00:15:20.379 He doesn't want them to be forgiven. 00:15:20.379 --> 00:15:23.740 They are unworthy, unliked, undesirable. 00:15:24.200 --> 00:15:25.259 And so what does Jonah do? 00:15:25.740 --> 00:15:26.559 He runs away. 00:15:27.019 --> 00:15:28.360 But where does Jonah go to? 00:15:29.179 --> 00:15:34.379 He goes down to Joppa, the port city on the coast, to board a ship to Tarshish. 00:15:35.179 --> 00:15:39.379 Jonah is running away because he doesn't want the Gentiles to hear about God and be forgiven. 00:15:39.379 --> 00:15:50.779 And so in the background, the story of Jonah, the prodigal prophet, who's on the run from God because he despised the Gentiles, because he considered them unworthy, is going on in the background. 00:15:51.580 --> 00:15:55.779 And Luke, who writes the book of Acts, is just dropping this question in for us. 00:15:56.240 --> 00:15:58.679 Is Peter in Joppa going to be like Jonah? 00:15:59.340 --> 00:16:03.279 Is he going to run away from the Gentiles because he thinks that they don't deserve God's grace? 00:16:03.279 --> 00:16:06.860 So while he's in the city of Joppa, Peter has this vision. 00:16:07.360 --> 00:16:14.159 And in this vision, a sheath comes down and there's full of animals, animals and reptiles and birds of prey, all sorts of animals. 00:16:14.240 --> 00:16:18.379 And he hears a voice saying, Peter, feast yourself. 00:16:18.879 --> 00:16:20.120 Eat what's in front of you. 00:16:20.860 --> 00:16:22.939 But for Peter, this is a problem. 00:16:23.439 --> 00:16:29.279 Because the animals that he sees in this vision in front of him are all what are ceremonially and religiously unclean. 00:16:30.220 --> 00:16:31.220 They are defiled. 00:16:31.220 --> 00:16:34.220 They're the kind of things that no Jew would ever eat in his life. 00:16:34.320 --> 00:16:35.879 Peter says, never, Lord. 00:16:35.980 --> 00:16:36.920 You've got to be joking. 00:16:37.540 --> 00:16:38.620 Now, why is this? 00:16:39.240 --> 00:16:48.660 In the Old Testament, God had given his people all sorts of rules and regulations around food and clothing to wear and household articles and activities. 00:16:49.320 --> 00:16:51.120 Things that he said, these are outlawed. 00:16:51.160 --> 00:16:52.379 These are off limits for you. 00:16:52.720 --> 00:16:55.360 These things, if you engage with them, will make you unclean. 00:16:55.820 --> 00:16:57.080 Now, why does God do that? 00:16:57.519 --> 00:17:00.160 Well, partly it's for hygiene reasons and health. 00:17:00.159 --> 00:17:01.939 Remember, they're traveling through the wilderness. 00:17:02.439 --> 00:17:05.180 God doesn't want them to eat unhealthy food. 00:17:05.659 --> 00:17:05.759 Right? 00:17:06.319 --> 00:17:12.039 I'm sure we've all eaten off sushi or food that is not properly cooked. 00:17:12.359 --> people. 00:20:10.379 --> 00:20:15.059 God wasn't telling Peter to eat whatever food Cornelius puts in front of him. 00:20:15.059 --> 00:20:18.460 But to welcome whatever people God puts in front of no partiality. 00:22:06.399 --> 00:22:11.000 But in every nation, anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 00:22:11.119 --> 00:22:12.859 God shows no partiality. 00:22:13.399 --> 00:22:15.199 In some ways that's the crux of the message, isn't it? 00:22:16.079 --> 00:22:26.199 But now, just by the way, what Peter is not saying here is that anybody is saved or justified or parable. 00:26:11.720 --> 00:26:12.819 And he says, all people come. 00:26:12.960 --> 00:26:14.079 All sorts of people come. 00:26:14.139 --> 00:26:15.420 And I say, you go over there. 00:26:15.639 --> 00:26:16.440 You go over there. 00:26:16.539 --> 00:26:17.240 You to the right. 00:26:17.319 --> 00:26:18.099 And you to the left. 00:26:18.359 --> 00:26:19.779 And he says, these people on the right. 00:26:19.859 --> 00:26:21.559 My sheep are welcome in the kingdom. 00:26:21.559 --> 00:26:24.799 And these people on the left will go to eternal destruction. 00:26:25.559 --> 00:26:27.740 Or think about how Jesus welcomes children. 00:26:27.980 --> 00:26:30.379 But the rich young ruler, he sends them away. 00:26:30.819 --> 00:26:34.539 Or he welcomes sinners and tax collectors and prostitutes. 00:26:34.659 --> 00:26:36.179 But the Pharisees, he says, no, no. 00:26:36.240 --> 00:26:37.579 You have no part of my kingdom. 00:26:38.179 --> 00:26:40.059 So Jesus does make a distinction. 00:26:40.980 --> 00:26:42.299 So how does that work? 00:26:43.240 --> 00:26:46.339 Friends, in the scripture, the answer is that in God's kingdom, 00:26:46.339 --> 00:26:56.720 what separates and divides is not culture or wealth or status or ethnicity or language, but faith. 00:26:57.619 --> 00:27:01.659 Faith and repentance is the dividing line that divides. 00:27:02.299 --> 00:27:09.019 And Jesus has no problem saying there is a dividing line between those who trust me and believe me 00:27:09.019 --> 00:27:14.199 and come to me in faith and repentance and those who reject me and reject the offer of grace. 00:27:14.699 --> 00:27:15.839 There is a dividing line. 00:27:16.339 --> 00:27:17.939 But it's not the line that we draw. 00:27:18.579 --> 00:27:24.399 We like to draw the dividing line of culture and race and ethnicity and work and career and socioeconomic status. 00:27:24.980 --> 00:27:30.879 Jesus says it's those who come to him in faith and repentance, is Lord of all. 00:27:42.579 --> 00:27:45.039 Look at verse 36 it is. 00:27:45.039 --> 00:27:46.000 Peter says this. 00:27:46.399 --> 00:27:51.359 As for the word that God sent to Israel, preaching the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, 00:27:51.440 --> 00:27:53.099 then our Bibles, he has brackets. 00:27:53.500 --> 00:27:54.500 He is Lord of all. 00:27:54.700 --> 00:27:56.379 That's in some ways the main point. 00:27:56.779 --> 00:27:58.460 Jesus is Lord of all. 00:27:58.859 --> 00:28:00.779 He is Lord of all people. 00:28:00.779 --> 00:28:02.019 Jesus is Lord of all. 00:28:02.019 was used and abused and treated as nothing but a tool for some men's distorted pleasure. 00:28:55.279 --> 00:28:57.319 Friends, Jesus is Lord of your life. 00:28:58.159 --> 00:28:58.899 He's Lord of you. 00:28:59.019 --> 00:28:59.899 He's Lord of me. 00:28:59.900 --> 00:29:02.080 Jesus is Lord of all. 00:29:02.180 --> 00:29:07.820 And because he is Lord of all, he gets to determine a person's religion called Christianity is so very woke, 00:29:50.440 --> 00:29:52.799 so very welcoming and tolerant of everyone? 00:29:52.799 --> 00:29:54.220 We don't judge anyone. 00:29:54.720 --> 00:29:55.599 Well, that's not the reason. 00:29:56.159 --> 00:29:59.519 The reason is, no friends, because Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, 00:30:00.000 --> 00:30:06.579 also died on the cross for get that the other way around. 00:31:01.440 --> 00:31:03.840 We think the Old Testament prophets talk about judgment, 00:31:04.279 --> 00:31:06.720 and Jesus is here just to talk about grace and
