week we get to Psalm 23. 00:05:14.639 --> 00:05:19.979 We see that David is singing and he's writing and he's praying about the Lord. 00:05:20.079 --> 00:05:24.500 And we can see the fulfillment of that prayer in the person of Christ. 00:05:25.339 --> 00:05:28.620 It's much more explicit in Psalm 22 than that. 00:05:29.659 --> 00:05:35.639 As we understand the New Testament's teaching, Psalm 22 is not ultimately being prayed from the lips of David. 00:05:35.800 --> 00:05:38.159 It's being prayed from the lips of Jesus himself. 00:05:40.019 --> 00:05:41.300 It's all about him. 00:05:41.300 Psalm 22. 00:07:05.279 --> 00:07:08.039 The gospel authors also pick up on this. 00:07:08.159 --> 00:07:15.159 They underscore various moments of Jesus' crucifixion and what was happening around the Psalm 22, the fact that it's all about Jesus is undeniable. 00:07:53.699 --> 00:07:59.819 So if we're looking at how does the scripture refer to this psalm, how does it help us to understand this --> 00:08:06.800 It's about Jesus. 00:08:08.420 --> 00:08:10.000 But what does that mean for David? 00:08:11.240 --> 00:08:18.159 And what does that mean for the Israelites who would have sung this song or prayed this prayer in their worship? 00:08:18.159 --> 00:08:23.319 Did they sing something that they couldn't have possibly understood? 00:08:23.699 --> 00:08:31.560 Sometimes I think we get this idea that we come to Old Testament texts like this and psalms like this, 00:08:31.620 --> 00:08:35.100 that there is one meaning that David and the Israelites would have had, 00:08:35.139 --> 00:08:41.059 as if they would have come to temple and they would have sung this song meaning one thing that was appropriate for them. 00:08:41.519 --> 00:08:47.480 And then later on, maybe the apostles and the New Testament authors come to that same passage 00:08:47.480 --> 00:08:53.899 and they say, well, for David and Israel, it meant this, but for us beyond the cross, it means this, comprehending Roman crucifixion. 00:09:27.480 --> 00:09:29.519 I don't want to overstate the point. 00:09:29.519 --> 00:09:36.519 But they were well aware, like the psalms that preceded this one, 00:09:37.439 --> 00:09:42.579 that this song was about the suffering and the exaltation of the promised Messiah. 00:09:44.039 --> 00:09:47.980 When they sang this song, they didn't sing it to reflect on David's life. 00:09:48.240 --> 00:09:51.419 They didn't sing it to somehow fit themselves into it, 00:09:51.439 --> 00:09:55.120 as if it would be a prayer that would bring them comfort in their own distress. 00:09:55.259 --> 00:09:57.439 That's not what they would have had in mind. 00:09:57.440 --> 00:10:03.880 No, they sang this to look ahead to what would happen with their Savior. 00:11:52.820 there is a sense in which David went through difficulties that might be described, 00:11:53.100 --> 00:11:56.300 at least in part, the way this psalm speaks. 00:11:56.680 --> 00:12:02.120 But even David would have known that the future son will fulfill in the fullest 00:12:02.120 --> 00:12:06.419 what his life only foreshadows and points to. 00:12:06.480 --> 00:12:07.139 They knew it was about a greater king who would lay down his life for their salvation? 00:12:37.700 --> 00:12:39.000 Yeah, I think they knew that exactly. 00:12:39.160 --> 00:12:40.779 And I think it's why they putting off our shoes from our feet as Moses did at the burning bush, 00:13:20.879 --> 00:13:23.860 for if there be holy ground anywhere in Scripture, 00:13:24.700 --> 00:13:27.019 it is in this psalm. 00:13:29.220 --> 00:13:34.620 The Gospels tell us what happened to Jesus physically in his crucifixion and his sufferings. 00:13:35.220 --> 00:13:42.799 Psalm 22 reveals to us what Jesus was
