You've seen Jesus heal the sick. You've seen him cast out demons. And now these great 00:00:17.920 --> 00:00:23.839 ! crowds are following about wherever he goes. And you're probably thinking, what's this kingdom of 00:00:23.839 --> 00:00:30.800 heaven that Jesus keeps talking about? And just as you think that, Jesus brings you up onto the 00:00:30.800 --> 00:00:37.439 mountain and he sits down and he begins to teach you. He begins to reveal the principles by which 00:00:38.079 --> 00:00:46.159 his kingdom is governed. And in today's passage, what Jesus is telling us is the sort of people who 00:00:46.159 --> 00:00:52.400 are a part of his kingdom and the impact those people will have on those around them. And this 00:00:52.399 --> 00:00:57.839 is very important because we can have a temptation to think that what Jesus is doing here is he's 00:00:57.839 --> 00:01:03.519 simply telling us what we should be, what we should do. Or even worse, we can think what Jesus is saying 00:01:03.519 --> 00:01:10.480 is here's a list of qualifications you need to get into my kingdom. Like this is the kingdom entrance exam. 00:01:11.599 --> 00:01:19.039 But Jesus isn't saying you need to become the salt of the earth. He's not saying, you know, you need to 00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:24.160 become the light of the world. And if you you're salty enough, if you shine enough, then I'll let you in. 00:01:25.600 --> 00:01:30.480 But rather he's saying, you are the salt of the earth already. You are the light of the world. 00:01:31.600 --> 00:01:38.240 And this goes back to a very important principle about the kingdom of heaven, an important principle 00:01:38.240 --> 00:01:44.880 about the Christian life. Because often we think that it's what we do that determines who we are. 00:01:44.879 --> 00:01:52.239 What Jesus is saying is actually, it's who we are that determines what we do. 00:01:54.079 --> 00:02:00.319 Now, that prompts us to think, okay, if it's not us who qualifies ourselves to get into the kingdom, 00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:07.120 if it's not us who change ourselves, then what causes this change? 00:02:07.120 --> 00:02:16.400 And in Paul's letter to the church in Colossae, it's in the first chapter of Colossians, 00:02:16.879 --> 00:02:21.280 Paul is explaining that he's praying for the Colossians. He's praying that they'd live 00:02:21.280 --> 00:02:25.520 to be worthy of the Lord. They should live the life that God's called them to. 00:02:26.640 --> 00:02:31.280 But he bases this in who they are. And this is what he says, 00:02:31.280 --> 00:02:38.240 And giving joyful thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share the inheritance 00:02:38.240 --> 00:02:44.000 of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:50.719 and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 00:02:50.719 --> 00:03:07.680 So, what Jesus is saying is, we are brought in to the kingdom by God wrestling us out of darkness. 00:03:08.240 --> 00:03:16.240 We're taken from rebellion from God into God's family. God is the one who transforms us first. 00:03:16.240 --> 00:03:20.960 And because we've been transformed, therefore we will live differently. 00:03:21.680 --> 00:03:26.320 And this is exactly how God's always worked. If we remember in the book of Exodus, 00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:33.920 the children of Israel are in bondage, they're in slavery. And God doesn't come to them. He doesn't 00:03:33.920 --> 00:03:38.400 come to them and say, look, here's the Ten Commandments. And if you follow the Ten Commandments, 00:03:39.040 --> 00:03:46.080 you'll qualify to become my people. And then I'll rescue you out of Egypt. What God does is he comes 00:03:46.080 --> 00:03:51.040 to the people and he sends Moses to them. And through many signs and wonders, he brings them out of 00:03:51.040 --> 00:03:57.280 slavery, out of bondage, and he takes them to the promised land. And he says to them, you know, 00:03:57.280 --> 00:04:03.840 now that I've rescued you, now you're my people. And remember Moses, then it's Moses, after they've been 00:04:03.840 --> 00:04:11.120 rescued, goes up the mountain into the presence of God and receives the Ten Commandments, the way that 00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:15.840 God's people are supposed to live. And that's, we can see this at the start of the Ten Commandments. 00:04:16.480 --> 00:04:22.079 They start saying, I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 00:04:22.079 --> 00:04:29.519 out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. And so on. And what Jesus is doing 00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:35.199 is, he's doing the same thing as Moses is doing. Like Moses, he's announced that there's been a rescue 00:04:35.199 --> 00:04:43.759 of God's people, out of slavery to sin and into a new kingdom. And like Moses, Jesus goes up the mountain 00:04:44.399 --> 00:04:49.759 and he gives us a new way to live. But unlike Moses, you see, Jesus is different. 00:04:51.360 --> 00:04:56.079 Moses goes up the mountain into God's presence alone, and he receives the law from God. 00:04:56.079 --> 00:05:04.159 But Jesus brings us up the mountain into his own presence, and he himself teaches us. 00:05:05.839 --> 00:05:12.079 And I say us for an important reason, because Jesus' words here aren't just to his disciples 00:05:12.079 --> 00:05:19.199 at that time, but to everybody here who's a Christian. Jesus is saying, look, I've taken you and rescued you. 00:05:19.199 --> 00:05:24.879 I have changed you and transformed you. I've given you a new identity. And because you have a new identity, 00:05:24.879 --> 00:05:31.759 you're going to live differently. And when you live differently, that's an impact on those around you. 00:05:32.560 --> 00:05:38.639 And Jesus uses two images to explain this impact. He uses salt and he uses light. 00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:47.519 Firstly, if we look at salt. Now, I like making bread, right? And there's lots of different things you can put in bread. 00:05:47.519 --> 00:05:53.439 You can put olives in, you can put cheese in, tomatoes in. You can make sweet bread, you can make savory bread. 00:05:53.439 --> 00:05:58.000 So if you take olives, you know, I like olives. I could put olives in bread. I think it would taste nice. 00:05:58.560 --> 00:06:05.519 But someone else might see olives and be like, well, I don't like olives. You know, it's personal preference. 00:06:05.519 --> 00:06:12.720 You can put olives in, you can take them out. But salt isn't optional. It's a fundamental ingredient. 00:06:12.720 --> 00:06:19.759 If you make real bread, you only need four things. You need flour, you need water, you need yeast, and you need salt. 00:06:19.759 --> 00:06:27.439 You can't take any of these away. But there's a difference between these. If you leave out flour, 00:06:28.480 --> 00:06:33.599 instantly you'll notice you've just got a bowl of water with some stuff floating in it. It's not very useful. 00:06:33.599 --> 00:06:40.639 If you leave out water, it's just a dry pile. You can't mix it together. If you leave out yeast, you can mix it, 00:06:40.639 --> 00:06:46.560 but it won't rise, it won't go anywhere. But salt's a bit different. See, salt's very small. It's not always 00:06:46.560 --> 00:06:50.800 noticed at first. So if you leave out salt, you can mix your bread, you can knead your bread, 00:06:50.800 --> 00:06:54.319 your bread will rise, you can bake it. But it's only when you take it out of the oven, 00:06:54.319 --> 00:07:00.399 you cut the first slice, and you taste it, you realize just how disgusting it is without any salt 00:07:00.399 --> 00:07:09.199 in it, and you'll spit it out. And the other thing about salt is, although it's a very valuable thing, 00:07:09.199 --> 00:07:15.360 it's not a particularly fancy, it's not expensive ingredient, it's an ordinary ingredient. It's very 00:07:15.360 --> 00:07:21.759 abundant around us. So when Jesus compares this to salt, he's saying these same things. He's saying, 00:07:22.319 --> 00:07:28.959 you know, we're fundamental, and our effect on the world around us, it's necessary, 00:07:28.959 --> 00:07:39.199 but sometimes it's subtle, and it's often ordinary. So when we look at why is the effect that we have 00:07:39.199 --> 00:07:46.319 on those around us fundamental? You see, when God made the world, when he made humanity, he made us 00:07:46.319 --> 00:07:51.599 to be in a relationship with him. There was a love between us and God, and there's a love between us 00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:59.040 and one another. But when we turned away from God, see, we began to hate God, we broke that relationship, 00:07:59.040 --> 00:08:04.960 and that broke the relationship we had with one another. We began to hate one another. 00:08:06.400 --> 00:08:14.160 And so in order to fix this problem, God decided to show his love to us by sending Jesus to us. And 00:08:14.160 --> 00:08:17.920 in fact, what he's doing here is not creating something new exactly, but he's restoring 00:08:18.480 --> 00:08:23.840 the way things are supposed to be. But when God loves us, when he restores a relationship 00:08:24.400 --> 00:08:29.680 that we have with him, that also has an impact on the relationship we have with one another. 00:08:30.960 --> 00:08:33.519 We could see this in 1 John. 00:08:37.840 --> 00:08:45.279 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God 00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:52.480 and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. And it's the same thing, you notice Jesus is saying here. 00:09:18.399 --> 00:09:22.399 There's a necessary connection between God's love and our love for one another. In the same way, 00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:27.519 Jesus is saying, if you've been transformed into salt, you will be salty. 00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:35.280 So, because he says, if the salt loses its saltiness, how could it be made salty again? It's no longer 00:09:35.279 --> 00:09:40.720 good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled on their foot. So, the connection between 00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:48.240 us receiving God's love and us showing God's love to other people around us, it's so necessary that 00:09:48.240 --> 00:09:55.199 Jesus is saying, if you're not showing your God's love to those around you, then maybe, or definitely, 00:09:55.199 --> 00:10:01.120 you've not been the recipient of God's love either. But now, Jesus isn't saying this to 00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:08.960 try to make us feel bad or put a burden upon us. But really, he's trying to encourage us. Because 00:10:08.960 --> 00:10:14.720 remember, salt is subtle and salt is ordinary. Sometimes we can think, okay, well, what God's 00:10:14.720 --> 00:10:20.159 asking us to do is, if we want to really show God's love, we have to be someone special, someone 00:10:20.159 --> 00:10:24.480 important. We have to be like a celebrity pastor, or we have to do something amazing. We have to 00:10:24.480 --> 00:10:32.480 abolish slavery. We have to set up a hospital or something like this. But Jesus is not talking 00:10:32.480 --> 00:10:38.000 about these big dramatic moments. He's talking about the everyday, the ordinary. He's saying that 00:10:38.800 --> 00:10:45.440 if you've become part of my kingdom, then I'm working in you to show my love to those around you. 00:10:45.440 --> 00:10:51.360 Sometimes you won't even notice that's what's happening, but it will happen. And I'll give you 00:10:51.360 --> 00:10:59.039 an example. Some of my friends from university, in first year, they lived in student halls. And 00:10:59.039 --> 00:11:04.480 there's about five or six people in the flat. And they got on relatively well with most of their 00:11:04.480 --> 00:11:13.200 flatmates. But one of their flatmates, for some reason, really despised Christians, hated Christianity. 00:11:15.200 --> 00:11:20.800 But then later on, so there's just a bit of a rift between them and one of their flatmates. But 00:11:20.799 --> 00:11:26.879 later on, she became quite sick. And my friends decided, okay, well, she's sick. We should look 00:11:26.879 --> 00:11:32.000 after her. And they didn't do this thinking, oh, we're doing something amazing here. We're doing 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:38.319 something dramatic here. And you just thought, well, it just came naturally. You see, they'd received 00:11:38.319 --> 00:11:46.000 God's love to them. And just second nature, it was to show that love to someone else. And because 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:54.080 they looked after her, this little small thing had a massive impact. And then she changed from being 00:11:54.080 --> 00:11:58.399 someone who hated Christianity to someone who had a positive view of Christianity and of Christians. 00:11:58.399 --> 00:12:06.720 Because that's the kind of impact Jesus is saying that his love has on us. We've received God's love. 00:12:07.279 --> 00:12:13.039 And just naturally, there's going to be this consequence of that love overflowing in small, 00:12:13.039 --> 00:12:14.639 subtle ways to those around us. 00:12:14.639 --> 00:12:26.960 The second picture that Jesus uses is of light. Now, notice again, the language Jesus uses. He doesn't say, 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:31.039 you need to be the light of the world. He says, you are the light of the world. 00:12:31.039 --> 00:12:38.799 And he goes further. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Once Jesus has made his people, 00:12:39.919 --> 00:12:45.279 we can't hide who we are. There's no way of disguising it. There's no way of undoing the transformation 00:12:45.279 --> 00:12:52.159 that God's worked in us. And then neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, 00:12:52.159 --> 00:12:57.759 they put it on a stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. So when Jesus, if you will, 00:12:57.759 --> 00:13:03.360 lights us like a lamp, he's not even talking that it's possible to put that out. Even when you put 00:13:03.360 --> 00:13:11.679 a light under a bowl, it's still shining. There's always going to be a necessary consequence of our 00:13:11.679 --> 00:13:18.720 transformation. So when he's saying light, what exactly is Jesus talking about? Because light is 00:13:18.720 --> 00:13:23.200 used in a lot of different ways in the Bible. You have darkness versus light, good versus evil. 00:13:23.200 --> 00:13:31.920 But two ways, I think, are pretty applicable here, if you think about light. Firstly, light brings us 00:13:31.920 --> 00:13:39.520 knowledge. If you're in a dark room, unless the light's turned on, you have no information about what's 00:13:39.520 --> 00:13:48.800 around you. You need light to see and to understand. Secondly, light can bring you not just information, 00:13:48.799 --> 00:13:56.079 but it can make you see the beauty and the wonder of something. If it was the middle of winter right now in 00:13:56.079 --> 00:14:00.879 Scotland and you were outside, it would probably be light enough that you could see where you were going. 00:14:01.599 --> 00:14:06.479 But if someone asked you what your environment would be like, you'd probably say, well, it's, you know, 00:14:06.479 --> 00:14:14.799 it's a bit dreary. It's dreak. It's all doom and gloom. But if you are outside in a day like today, where the sun is shining brightly, 00:14:15.679 --> 00:14:19.599 you're probably going to be much more positive. You might even say, well, it's a glorious day, isn't it? 00:14:20.639 --> 00:14:28.159 And it's the same thing here. When we, when it talks, Jesus talks about us as the light of the world, what he's saying is that we both 00:14:29.120 --> 00:14:36.959 reveal the knowledge of who God is, but also that we reveal and we reflect God's glory to those around us. 00:14:36.960 --> 00:14:43.840 So firstly, if you think about light is revealing knowledge. So why is it that 00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:53.680 people need to receive knowledge of God? Well, Paul talks about this in the first chapter of Romans. 00:14:56.639 --> 00:15:02.720 For since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature have 00:15:02.720 --> 00:15:08.560 been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. 00:15:08.560 --> 00:15:13.279 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him. 00:15:14.080 --> 00:15:21.040 But their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, 00:15:21.040 --> 00:15:28.080 they became fools and exchanged the glory of the mortal God for images made to look like a mortal human 00:15:28.080 --> 00:15:37.360 being and birds and animals and reptiles. So although people by nature can have some understanding of God, 00:15:38.160 --> 00:15:44.400 automatically we, we don't want to look up at the one true God. Instead, we turn our eyes down to earth 00:15:44.400 --> 00:15:54.800 and we worship other things. So how does God solve this problem? Well, we see this earlier in Matthew. 00:15:54.799 --> 00:16:24.000 So what God does is, we're not looking up at God. So God comes down to us. 00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:31.120 So God comes down to us in Jesus Christ. And Jesus came down to open up people's eyes, to lift them back up, 00:16:32.159 --> 00:16:38.559 to worship the one true God. And you could see this a lot in the gospels. Jesus often goes around and 00:16:38.559 --> 00:16:45.919 heals the blind. But when he heals the blind, he often remarks that though these people are physically 00:16:45.919 --> 00:16:54.079 blind, they spiritually can see, they understand that Jesus is the Messiah and he's the son of God. 00:16:54.959 --> 00:17:00.799 On the other hand, you have those around like the Pharisees, although who can physically see, 00:17:00.799 --> 00:17:09.599 but they lack spiritual sight. And so Jesus is saying, you know, he's not just here to heal people's physical sight, 00:17:09.599 --> 00:17:17.759 but to heal their spiritual sight as well. And the same way, we could see there's this 00:17:17.759 --> 00:17:28.559 chain of connection. Jesus comes to give people knowledge of God. And the same way, Jesus says, you know, 00:17:28.559 --> 00:17:35.839 I'm going to work in you and I'm going to reveal myself to those around you by how you live. If we go back to 00:17:35.839 --> 00:17:44.720 my friends I mentioned earlier. So you see, at first, they just did something small to help one of their 00:17:44.720 --> 00:17:48.879 friends. And then she, she, she, sorry. 00:17:55.519 --> 00:17:57.759 And then she, thanks. 00:18:05.839 --> 00:18:14.639 See, at first there was a small change. At first, she received the love that they had for her. And then she had a 00:18:14.639 --> 00:18:21.439 positive view of Christianity. But then she moved from that and she thought, well, what is it that caused that 00:18:21.439 --> 00:18:30.919 change in the first place? And it was then that she became aware of God working through my friends. And eventually she 00:18:30.920 --> 00:18:41.160 became a Christian. But Jesus is just saying that we reveal mere knowledge of God. He's also saying that 00:18:41.160 --> 00:18:50.759 we reflect the glory of God. If we go back to Moses, remember Moses has brought the people of Israel out 00:18:50.759 --> 00:18:58.360 of Egypt and he's gone at the mountain, he's received the law. But later on, Moses goes, goes up the mountain 00:18:58.360 --> 00:19:00.920 again and he enters into the presence of the world. And he's gone up the mountain again. And he enters into the 00:19:00.920 --> 00:19:08.039 presence of God and he sees the glory of God. And he comes down the mountain and his face is shining 00:19:08.039 --> 00:19:15.400 with God's glory. But because it's so bright and because it's so glorious, the people of Israel can't 00:19:15.400 --> 00:19:24.279 bear to look at Moses' face. And so he has to cover himself with a veil. And the same, the same pattern 00:19:24.279 --> 00:19:31.639 happens with Jesus. Jesus has gone on the mountain. He's brought us up the mountain and he's taught us, 00:19:31.639 --> 00:19:40.119 here's how you're going to live. But later on in Matthew, in chapter 17, he brings his disciples up 00:19:40.119 --> 00:19:48.839 the mountain again. After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James and John, the brother of James, 00:19:48.839 --> 00:19:55.319 and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before him, before them. 00:19:55.319 --> 00:20:01.559 His face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared 00:20:01.559 --> 00:20:07.879 before them Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be 00:20:07.879 --> 00:20:12.799 here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah. 00:20:12.799 --> 00:20:18.639 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them. And a voice from the cloud said, 00:20:19.200 --> 00:20:25.599 this is my son whom I love. With him I am well pleased. Listen to him. When the disciples heard 00:20:25.599 --> 00:20:33.519 this, they fell face down to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. Get up, he said. 00:20:34.079 --> 00:20:42.000 Don't be afraid. When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. And again, we see Jesus offers 00:20:42.000 --> 00:20:48.720 something better than Moses. Jesus brings us up into the presence of God, into his own presence, 00:20:48.720 --> 00:20:55.599 and shows us his own glory. And this again, isn't just for Peter, James and John. As you see, 00:20:55.599 --> 00:21:03.000 as we heard in earlier reading, when Paul says, when Paul speaks of us beholding God's glory, 00:21:03.359 --> 00:21:08.940 beholding the glory of Jesus, he doesn't say, okay, in the future, we're going to see Jesus' glory, 00:21:08.940 --> 00:21:14.740 and we're going to be transformed. He's saying right now, we can see Jesus' glory. Right now, 00:21:14.740 --> 00:21:25.039 we're viewing Jesus' glory. And right now, we reflect his glory. And so, in the same way, 00:21:25.980 --> 00:21:33.900 there's this chain of, that connects all these three things together. Firstly, as Christians, 00:21:33.900 --> 00:21:40.380 we've received God's love. And that love overflows from us to those around us. Secondly, 00:21:41.380 --> 00:21:49.640 we receive knowledge of who God is. And through us, God reveals himself to others. And thirdly, 00:21:50.019 --> 00:21:56.040 we see God's glory. And once we've seen God's glory, God's glory shines through us. 00:21:56.039 --> 00:22:02.480 And this is important. Because very often, we can think, oh, look, okay, God did a bunch of things 00:22:02.480 --> 00:22:07.200 2,000 years ago. And then right now, it's all up to us. Right now, Jesus is saying, okay, 00:22:07.359 --> 00:22:13.180 here's all the things you have to do. Or maybe we think, well, nothing we do really matters. We're 00:22:13.180 --> 00:22:19.359 just kind of hanging about and waiting for Jesus to get back. What Jesus is saying is here, is actually, 00:22:19.359 --> 00:22:29.759 if you're a Christian, in your life right now, in all these different ways, I'm working. I'm showing 00:22:29.759 --> 00:22:37.879 my love through you to those around you. I'm showing who I am to those around you. And I'm using you 00:22:37.879 --> 00:22:48.299 to show my glory on earth. And if you're not a Christian, this is what Jesus is offering to you. 00:22:48.299 --> 00:22:58.079 He's saying, look, I can change you. I can transform you. I can give you a new way to live. 00:22:58.480 --> 00:23:07.500 And the new way to live is modeled after who Jesus is. So when we say we're the salt of the earth, 00:23:07.539 --> 00:23:12.000 when we say we're the light of the world, all that's saying is really we're like Jesus. Because 00:23:12.000 --> 00:23:18.159 you see Jesus, as he lives, you see this love he has for those around him. We see this 00:23:18.160 --> 00:23:24.140 care he has. But as well, we see there's a weight to what he says. There's an authority to what Jesus 00:23:24.140 --> 00:23:30.300 says. When people see Jesus, they say, there's something different about that man. There's 00:23:30.300 --> 00:23:36.220 something unexplainable by ordinary human terms. There's something supernatural about him. 00:23:37.380 --> 00:23:43.019 And that's what Jesus is saying he'll do to us. He will, when we receive Jesus' love, 00:23:43.019 --> 00:23:49.359 we will love like Jesus. When we come to know Jesus, that's us coming to know God. And when we 00:23:49.359 --> 00:23:56.460 see Jesus' glory, we too will reflect his glory around us. And that's what being a Christian, 00:23:57.180 --> 00:24:00.359 that's what being in the kingdom of heaven is really about. This is the new identity. 00:24:01.319 --> 00:24:07.839 That's what Christian means.
