Genesis 12 verse 8 of the church Bible. 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:26.000 So we got our first gold at the Winter Olympics on Friday night, didn't we? Matt Weston won gold in the skeleton. I hope we just won another gold today. The momentum is slowly building, isn't it? 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:45.019 Think about winning Olympic gold. There's nothing like it, is that? Olympic gold, it's just the pinnacle of sporting glory, isn't it? Your name forever goes down in history. Matt Weston, he already films the headlines. You become a national hero. 00:00:45.020 --> 00:01:01.219 But the road to that glory is pretty unglorious, isn't it? We see Matt Weston on the podium with that gold around his neck and all the cheers. But what was the journey to that podium like? 00:01:01.219 --> 00:01:15.239 It's all the unglorious stuff that we don't see. It's the early mornings, the early bedtimes, the brutal gym sessions, the lonely runs in the rain, the chicken, rice and broccoli every day. 00:01:16.060 --> 00:01:28.859 It's all those Saturday mornings as a teenager, his dad driving him to Sheffield and back, all the training. It's being that nobody for years and years, just hoping for that podium. 00:01:28.859 --> 00:01:40.579 The right to glory is pretty unglorious. In fact, it is no glory at all until you actually get there. 00:01:42.140 --> 00:01:55.400 And that is just like God's promise of glory here in Genesis. In this cursed and fractured world, God came down to Abraham and laid out his plan of how to save all of this. 00:01:55.400 --> 00:02:01.520 He set out his plan to bring this unglorious world to glory. 00:02:02.200 --> 00:02:04.580 That's what we saw in Genesis 1-3 last week. 00:02:05.520 --> 00:02:11.680 So to a lonely, scattered world, God says, I promise to make a new family. 00:02:11.680 --> 00:02:19.379 To a world cast out of Eden, God says, I'm not going to give you a new home. 00:02:20.680 --> 00:02:25.379 And to a world under the curse, God says, I'm not going to bless you. 00:02:26.760 --> 00:02:31.420 And you see in verse 2, God promises to make Abraham's name great. 00:02:31.419 --> 00:02:34.839 This is the promise of glory. 00:02:36.699 --> 00:02:41.839 And this is ultimately the promise of glory in the new creation. 00:02:43.359 --> 00:02:45.859 That that was what Abraham was being promised. 00:02:45.979 --> 00:02:52.079 It was something beyond Canaan, beyond the Middle East, beyond what we can see here. 00:02:52.080 --> 00:02:58.180 It is a restored world and a redeemed people, all under the blessing of God in a new creation. 00:02:59.100 --> 00:03:01.820 showing us how each and every one of us can get there. 00:03:34.019 --> 00:03:34.859 You can think of Abraham. 00:03:34.959 --> 00:03:39.479 Abraham is like the model of how we come into this family we are seeing today that the journey to glory is actually pretty unglorious. 00:03:55.280 --> 00:03:58.200 And glory, it doesn't just come straight away. 00:03:59.540 --> 00:04:05.820 But unlike the Glory is certain. 00:04:12.139 --> 00:04:20.479 And unlike the Olympics, this glory isn't for the best or for those who have worked hard and earned it. 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:21.159 No. 00:04:21.240 --> 00:04:28.099 As we look at Abraham, we see God is calling the unlikely to glory. 00:04:29.659 --> 00:04:35.759 So if you want to be a part of God's plan to bless this world, to save it, and undo 00:04:42.540 --> 00:04:44.780 God is calling the unlikely. 00:04:46.060 --> 00:04:49.220 How does all this road to glory begin with Abraham? 00:04:49.540 --> 00:04:50.740 It begins with a call. 00:04:50.920 --> 00:04:51.340 That's why. 00:04:52.600 --> 00:04:59.660 Now the Lord said to Abraham, go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 00:04:59.660 --> 00:05:02.920 So how is God restoring this world? 00:05:02.920 --> 00:05:09.620 How is he undoing this curse and bringing salvation and starting this new family and bringing them to glory? 00:05:10.580 --> 00:05:11.800 He's calling. 00:05:13.260 --> 00:05:19.140 God speaks to Abraham and calls him into this plan. 00:05:19.139 --> 00:05:22.899 And it's a surprising call, in fact. 00:05:24.279 --> 00:05:30.019 Because actually, Abraham is one of the unlikeliest people to call at this point. 00:05:30.019 --> 00:05:36.419 If you know Abraham, if you know your Bible at all, and you can just have a picture of Abraham in your head, 00:05:36.979 --> 00:05:40.299 we know that Abraham, he's a great example of faith in the Bible. 00:05:42.159 --> 00:05:44.000 But he wasn't in ways. 00:05:45.680 --> 00:05:50.560 At this point, at this call, Abraham is a complete pagan. 00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:58.519 In the book of Joshua, it says, it references Abraham, it says, Abraham is worshipping idols when this call comes to him. 00:05:59.620 --> 00:06:02.959 He's not a spiritually obvious choice. 00:06:04.620 --> 00:06:07.019 And also, look at his age as well, verse 4. 00:06:07.779 --> 00:06:08.340 How old is he? 00:06:09.399 --> 00:06:10.620 75 years old. 00:06:11.959 --> 00:06:15.660 And on top of that, what's his family like? 00:06:16.120 --> 00:06:19.240 It's he and Sarah, and they have no children. 00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:24.860 He is the least obvious choice to start a nation with. 00:06:26.220 --> 00:06:35.000 So it's not like Abraham is the godliest man on earth, and he's young, and he has a big family, and he can grow even more, and he's ready to go. 00:06:35.079 --> 00:06:35.340 No. 00:06:35.959 --> 00:06:40.379 Abraham is completely unlikely to be who are the types of people Jesus calls? 00:08:04.079 --> 00:08:04.980 It's the unlikely. 00:08:05.980 --> 00:08:06.800 It's fishermen. 00:08:07.759 --> 00:08:08.740 Tax collectors. 00:08:09.019 --> 00:08:09.680 It's sinners. 00:08:10.740 --> 00:08:12.500 It's the Abrams that are described. 00:08:12.939 --> 00:08:16.600 It's not those who have got their act together with a perfect life. 00:08:16.939 --> 00:08:18.500 The obvious shining choice. 00:08:18.660 --> 00:08:21.000 No, Jesus calls the undeserving. 00:08:21.139 --> 00:08:23.060 It's the unlikely from his calling. 00:08:25.519 living in Ur of the Chaldeans. 00:11:15.500 --> 00:11:20.159 And this is significant because Ur was a big city hub at the time. 00:11:20.879 --> 00:11:22.500 It was kind of the London of the day. 00:11:22.500 --> 00:11:26.220 That's where Abraham's whole life was. 00:11:26.220 --> 00:11:27.480 And God says, 00:11:28.299 --> 00:11:31.500 Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house 00:11:31.500 --> 00:11:33.279 to the land that I will show you. 00:11:34.700 --> 00:11:36.539 This is the call that he hears. 00:11:37.679 --> 00:11:42.720 Go from your people and your life and 00:13:17.379 --> 00:13:20.960 but without ever seeing it. 00:13:20.960 --> 00:13:25.660 You might have heard of the 12-year-old Australian boy, 00:13:25.820 --> 00:13:27.460 Austin Appleby, in the news recently. 00:13:28.379 --> 00:13:29.480 It's an incredible story. 00:13:29.480 --> 00:13:33.620 A few weeks ago, Austin and his mum and his two siblings, 00:13:34.180 --> 00:13:36.600 they got stranded miles out to sea, 00:13:37.019 --> 00:13:38.320 off the coast of Australia, 00:13:38.600 --> 00:13:39.720 on their paddle boards. 00:13:40.500 --> 00:13:42.320 And they were out there for ages, 00:13:42.440 --> 00:13:43.379 in the hot sun, 00:13:43.519 --> 00:13:44.460 and they were getting desperate. 00:13:44.460 --> 00:13:47.660 And so, Austin, 00:13:47.940 --> 00:13:51.300 he swam back to shore to get help. 00:13:52.860 --> 00:13:55.600 And so, over the course of four hours, 00:13:56.639 --> 00:13:59.040 Austin swam four kilometres 00:13:59.040 --> 00:14:02.920 through shark-infested waters in the hot sun, 00:14:03.320 --> 00:14:04.560 back to the beach. 00:14:04.960 --> 00:14:05.940 He reached the beach, 00:14:06.060 --> 00:14:08.800 ran two kilometres to the knowing what her son has to do, 00:14:41.519 --> 00:14:43.700 and waiting for the impossible to happen. 00:14:43.700 --> 00:14:46.700 Well, that's just like Abraham. 00:14:48.300 --> 00:14:49.640 He heads to Canaan, 00:14:50.680 --> 00:14:54.040 staring at an empty horizon of a barren land, 00:14:55.120 --> 00:14:56.960 staring at an empty family, 00:14:57.900 --> 00:14:59.680 no glory to be seen, 00:14:59.800 --> 00:15:01.320 just floating in the unknown, 00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:04.220 and waiting for the impossible to happen. 00:15:04.220 --> 00:15:08.680 And that is what God has called Abraham to do. 00:15:09.879 --> 00:15:13.120 This is what God's call to glory looks like. 00:15:13.420 --> 00:15:17.180 It is a call to go to a world unseen. 00:15:17.179 --> 00:15:20.899 And that is mundane. 00:15:48.639 --> 00:15:50.100 I'm called to glory, 00:15:50.299 --> 00:15:51.379 but look at my life. 00:15:52.100 --> 00:15:55.360 I'm just feeling my life changing endless nappies. 00:15:55.360 --> 00:15:58.300 I'm promised glory, 00:15:59.039 --> 00:16:00.899 but my life, what does it look like? 00:16:00.960 --> 00:16:03.180 It's just going to another geography class. 00:16:04.519 --> 00:16:06.159 It's sitting at a desk, 00:16:06.340 --> 00:16:07.259 eight hours a day, 00:16:07.360 --> 00:16:08.360 again and again. 00:16:09.620 --> 00:16:10.820 I go to church, 00:16:10.899 --> 00:16:12.060 I follow the Lord Jesus, 00:16:12.200 --> 00:16:13.539 I know these promises, 00:16:14.580 --> 00:16:15.600 but look at my life, 00:16:15.680 --> 00:16:17.680 it is far, far from glorious. 00:16:19.480 --> 00:16:21.139 God has called us, 00:16:22.360 --> 00:16:24.180 yet life just feels small, 00:16:24.179 --> 00:16:25.259 and irrelevant, 00:16:25.539 --> 00:16:26.359 and pretty mundane, 00:16:27.219 --> 00:16:28.599 and that's not even to mention 00:16:28.599 --> 00:16:29.819 all the darkness of the Lord. 00:16:31.819 --> 00:16:33.859 And the idea of a new creation, 00:16:34.439 --> 00:16:38.019 it just seems so far off, doesn't it? 00:16:38.779 --> 00:16:41.599 I can't even imagine how that will happen. 00:16:42.120 --> 00:16:45.500 I can't even picture how I will exist without sin, 00:16:45.739 --> 00:16:47.500 or have a resurrected body, 00:16:47.799 --> 00:16:49.539 or not feel pain anymore. 00:16:50.399 --> 00:16:53.759 But the idea of staring at the horizon, 00:17:08.339 --> 00:17:11.579 and it just seems like God has promised the impossible. 00:17:11.579 --> 00:17:16.859 But this is when we need to realise what we are called to.
