Turn with me to Matthew 28 in your pew Bibles, page 835. 00:00:08.400 --> 00:00:15.780 This morning is the third week in our mini-sermon series on the person of Jesus as prophet, priest, 00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:24.900 and king. Broadly speaking, in the Old Testament, the priest came from the tribe of Levi, the kings 00:00:24.899 --> 00:00:31.079 came from the tribe of Judah, and God raised up prophets when and how He wanted to. And occasionally, 00:00:31.079 --> 00:00:38.920 one individual would come close to embodying all three roles in one person. Think people like David 00:00:38.920 --> 00:00:46.099 or Samuel or Moses, but what we see in Jesus is that He embodies these three roles completely. 00:00:46.719 --> 00:00:54.739 The prophet who speaks and reveals God's Word to us, the priest who intercedes for us, 00:00:54.899 --> 00:01:01.299 and represents us before God, and our King who rules over us with justice and mercy. 00:01:02.159 --> 00:01:05.840 And so, this morning, we're focusing on that final theme, the theme of Jesus as our King. 00:01:06.519 --> 00:01:11.959 We'll be looking at a few different Scriptures, but let's start by reading the end of Matthew's 00:01:11.959 --> 00:01:18.980 Gospel, chapter 28, starting at verse 16. Now, the eleven disciples went to Galilee, 00:01:18.980 --> 00:01:39.240 Galilee, and the eleven disciples went to Galilee, and the eleven disciples of all nations, baptizing 00:01:39.240 --> 00:01:48.240 them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I 00:01:48.239 --> 00:01:56.539 have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. 00:01:57.799 --> 00:02:05.139 So, I have a very simple outline for this morning. Number one, why we need a King. Number two, how Jesus 00:02:05.139 --> 00:02:10.719 has become our King. Number three, why that's good news for us. So, first, why we need a King. 00:02:10.719 --> 00:02:19.039 And I want to start by saying we need a King for two reasons. Number one is we flourish when we live 00:02:19.039 --> 00:02:26.759 under an authority above ourselves. If you look back to Genesis 1, Genesis 1 presents God as the 00:02:26.759 --> 00:02:33.780 sovereign Creator and Ruler of heaven and earth, the one by whom and through whom all things were made. 00:02:33.780 --> 00:02:41.280 And as our Creator, God is infinite. We are finite. He is the eternal Creator. We are His creatures. 00:02:42.620 --> 00:02:48.520 And therefore, we're responsible to love Him and obey Him. Now, of course, when we hear that, 00:02:49.360 --> 00:02:55.939 we are responsible to obey something outside ourselves. Many of us object, right? Isn't there 00:02:55.939 --> 00:03:01.159 something inside us that says, I don't want someone else telling me what to do. I want to be my own King. 00:03:01.159 --> 00:03:09.120 I want to rule my own life. I know what's best for myself. Obedience is oppressive. And, you know, 00:03:09.159 --> 00:03:13.560 this isn't just a modern American attitude. It goes, according to the Bible, it goes all the way back 00:03:13.560 --> 00:03:22.039 to Adam and Eve, a long-standing human tradition. God had set the boundaries in the garden. You can eat 00:03:22.039 --> 00:03:33.019 from any tree in the garden except one. But Eve decided that she should take the decision into her 00:03:33.019 --> 00:03:38.699 own hands and decide for herself what was wise and good. And Adam went right along with that, 00:03:39.500 --> 00:03:44.819 was in agreement with that. They chose to make themselves the center of order and the source of 00:03:44.819 --> 00:03:55.799 wisdom instead of living under God's authority. But let me ask this question. All right, we have 00:03:55.799 --> 00:04:01.459 this instinctive reaction that we don't want someone else to rule over us. But when we behave 00:04:01.459 --> 00:04:08.819 as if no one should have authority over us, as if the meaning of life is ultimately determined by 00:04:08.819 --> 00:04:16.699 ourselves, do we really flourish as human beings and as a society? I mean, young children don't 00:04:16.699 --> 00:04:22.079 flourish if they're allowed to stay up however late they want, watch as much TV as they want, 00:04:22.159 --> 00:04:27.680 eat as much sugar as they want. You learn that pretty quick as a parent. All right, a workplace 00:04:27.680 --> 00:04:32.959 doesn't function well when every employee acts as if they have personal veto power over any decision 00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:38.519 that involves them. And a marriage won't be very happy if one or both partners think that the 00:04:38.519 --> 00:04:45.719 primary goal of the marriage is to maximize my individual happiness. A single person will tend to 00:04:45.719 --> 00:04:52.659 be shallow if they focus on maintaining their freedom from external commitments. Single people 00:04:52.659 --> 00:05:00.379 flourish when they link themselves to and play vital roles in a broader community. Now, in our modern 00:05:00.379 --> 00:05:07.399 Western world, sometimes this ideal of being our own king, ruling our own lives, individual autonomy 00:05:07.399 --> 00:05:15.279 is idealized. But, you know, I think it's not as satisfying as it's made out to be. A couple of 00:05:15.279 --> 00:05:20.919 years ago, David Brooks wrote a New York Times editorial on this topic, and he said this. He said, 00:05:21.000 --> 00:05:28.299 in commencement speeches, college graduates are routinely told, follow your passion, chart your own course, 00:05:28.439 --> 00:05:35.079 march to the beat of your own drummer, find yourself. But this mantra misleads on nearly every front. 00:05:35.079 --> 00:05:40.659 College grads are often sent out into the world amid rapturous talk of limitless possibilities. 00:05:41.800 --> 00:05:47.659 But this talk is no help to the central business of adulthood, finding serious things to tie yourself 00:05:47.659 --> 00:05:55.099 down to, like a spouse, a community, or a calling. Graduates are told to be independent-minded and express 00:05:55.099 --> 00:06:00.459 their inner spirit. But, of course, doing your job well sometimes means suppressing yourself, 00:06:00.459 --> 00:06:06.219 being part of a team, following the rules of an institution, going down a checklist. Graduates 00:06:06.219 --> 00:06:11.500 are told to pursue happiness. But when you read a biography of someone, it's rarely the things 00:06:11.500 --> 00:06:19.599 that made them happy that compel our admiration. It's the things that they did that were hard 00:06:19.599 --> 00:06:25.719 and even miserable, which sometimes cost them friends and aroused hatred, yet in the end, 00:06:25.720 --> 00:06:33.060 were worth it. It's excellence, not happiness, that we admire most. And he concluded his editorial 00:06:33.060 --> 00:06:38.280 by saying this, the purpose of life is not to find yourself, it's to lose yourself. 00:06:40.460 --> 00:06:45.860 Now, even though we make great against it, I think the reality is we're designed to flourish 00:06:45.860 --> 00:06:52.920 under an authority greater than ourselves. And we don't do well when we try to make ourselves 00:06:52.920 --> 00:06:59.720 the ultimate authority. So, that's the first reason we need a king, is because we flourish when we live 00:06:59.720 --> 00:07:06.819 under a good authority beyond ourselves. The second reason we need a king, according to the Bible, 00:07:07.620 --> 00:07:13.220 is that as we live under God's authority, we're also meant to exercise authority in God's world. 00:07:14.300 --> 00:07:17.740 Again, if you look back at Genesis 1, verse 26, God said, 00:07:17.740 --> 00:07:24.759 let us make man in our image after our likeness and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, 00:07:24.840 --> 00:07:30.620 the birds of the heavens, the livestock over all the earth. In the ancient world, it was common to 00:07:30.620 --> 00:07:40.379 describe the king of a nation as the image of God. But the Bible says not just the king of a nation 00:07:40.379 --> 00:07:48.040 bears the image of God, but every human being, male and female, bears the image of God and is called 00:07:48.040 --> 00:07:57.860 to exercise authority in some way or other over God's creation. But of course, just as in our rebellion, 00:07:58.500 --> 00:08:05.100 we sometimes resist the idea of someone else ruling over us, in our reticence, we sometimes refuse 00:08:05.100 --> 00:08:14.660 to take responsibility to rule rightly in the world. And isn't that also what Adam and Eve did 00:08:14.660 --> 00:08:21.780 in Genesis 3 when they disobeyed God's command? God had said to them, have dominion over the earth 00:08:21.780 --> 00:08:27.660 and its creatures. God placed them in the garden and said, work it and keep it. Take care of it. 00:08:27.660 --> 00:08:36.300 Guard it. Exercise authority within it. So when that sneaky little serpent came to them 00:08:36.300 --> 00:08:42.340 and started twisting God's word and mocking God's goodness and denying God's reliability, 00:08:42.480 --> 00:08:47.680 what were Adam and Eve supposed to do? They were supposed to take up their God-given authority and 00:08:47.680 --> 00:08:56.639 kick him out and say, you don't belong here. You are not living, and we have the right and authority 00:08:56.639 --> 00:09:06.759 under God to say, no, we are not going to follow you. But what did they do instead? They held back. 00:09:07.960 --> 00:09:13.319 They engaged with him on his own terms. They were gradually swayed by his distorted perspective 00:09:13.319 --> 00:09:20.659 that maybe God really wasn't that good after all. And finally, they yielded to him when they should have 00:09:20.659 --> 00:09:30.000 exercised authority over him. What's the point? The point is humanity's original failure and the way 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:38.399 that we continue to fail as human beings is both a matter of rebellion against God's authority or pride 00:09:38.399 --> 00:09:47.379 and also a refusal to accept our responsibility and authority in God's creation. We might call that 00:09:47.379 --> 00:09:54.980 sloth. Now, sloth is an old word, and most of us think when we hear sloth, we think laziness, 00:09:55.840 --> 00:10:02.580 being a couch potato, right, laying in bed all day for no good reason. But sloth is actually bigger 00:10:02.580 --> 00:10:09.179 than that. It's more like apathy. And so sloth can be expressed by an idleness, staying in bed all day 00:10:09.179 --> 00:10:16.879 for no good reason, but also in a frenzy of meaningless activity or constant distraction or 00:10:16.879 --> 00:10:26.319 avoidance of responsibility. And when we think about it, aren't we often reticent to take up our 00:10:26.319 --> 00:10:32.039 authority and responsibility, for those two things are always meant to go together, over the world that 00:10:32.039 --> 00:10:39.620 God has put us in. Perhaps the first part of God's creation over which God makes us responsible is our 00:10:39.620 --> 00:10:49.019 very own physical bodies. But how often do we allow our bodily desires, our cravings for food, our desire 00:10:49.019 --> 00:10:58.319 for sex, to rule us rather than us taking responsibility for our bodies and presenting them to God as living 00:10:58.320 --> 00:11:07.840 sacrifices, holy and pleasing to Him? Or how often do we let our emotions control us and drive us and overwhelm us? 00:11:09.280 --> 00:11:16.720 Martin Lloyd-Jones said this, he said, most of our unhappiness in life is caused by us listening to ourselves 00:11:16.720 --> 00:11:25.900 instead of talking to ourselves. He said, take the example when you wake up in the morning and all the thoughts 00:11:25.899 --> 00:11:36.779 that come into your head. Anxious thoughts, fearful thoughts, distorted thoughts. Maybe I don't want to get 00:11:36.779 --> 00:11:42.620 out of bed after all. He says, you have to take yourself in hand and preach to yourself. Question yourself. 00:11:42.799 --> 00:11:51.879 Say to your soul, why are you cast down? Exhort yourself. Hope in God instead of muttering in this depressed 00:11:51.879 --> 00:11:58.559 and unhappy way. And then he says, remind yourself of God, who God is and what God has done and what 00:11:58.559 --> 00:12:04.159 God has promised to do and then defy yourself and defy other people and defy the devil and the whole world 00:12:04.159 --> 00:12:10.840 and say with the psalmist, I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance. 00:12:13.519 --> 00:12:19.159 But, I mean, how often do we really do that? Right? Most of us fall short of that. 00:12:19.159 --> 00:12:28.480 Often. Another example. What about the decisions that God has placed within our responsibility to discern? 00:12:29.959 --> 00:12:37.159 Decisions like whether and who to marry or what kind of career to pursue. All kinds of decisions that are 00:12:37.159 --> 00:12:44.199 that require wisdom and discernment. But there's not a particular biblical command 00:12:44.200 --> 00:12:47.860 that tells us exactly what to do one way or the other. 00:12:49.379 --> 00:12:50.800 Are we wanting God 00:12:50.800 --> 00:12:53.080 to be like a GPS 00:12:53.080 --> 00:12:56.140 and tell us exactly what to do 00:12:56.140 --> 00:12:58.060 and exactly where to go and exactly 00:12:58.060 --> 00:13:00.160 when to turn and leave nothing unclear or 00:13:00.160 --> 00:13:00.580 ambiguous? 00:13:02.379 --> 00:13:04.300 But God has not promised to be our GPS. 00:13:05.259 --> 00:13:06.080 He's promised to be 00:13:06.080 --> 00:13:08.180 our Heavenly Father and He wants us to grow 00:13:08.180 --> 00:13:10.140 into maturity and 00:13:10.139 --> 00:13:11.659 take that responsibility 00:13:11.659 --> --> 00:13:30.159 No, He said, you can eat from any of the trees in the garden. 00:13:30.639 --> 00:13:32.559 You have this wonderful freedom 00:13:32.559 --> 00:13:35.100 to eat from all the trees in the garden 00:13:35.100 --> 00:13:37.500 except one tree that belongs to me, 00:13:37.500 --> 00:13:39.879 the tree of the knowledge of good and evil 00:13:39.879 --> 00:13:42.259 that represents God's authority 00:13:42.259 --> 00:13:43.460 to determine 00:13:43.460 --> 00:13:45.519 and set the boundaries 00:13:45.519 --> 00:13:47.179 and determine what is right and wrong. 00:13:48.299 --> beings are 00:15:51.700 --> 00:15:53.440 to misuse authority 00:15:53.440 --> 00:15:54.680 in destructive 00:15:54.680 --> 00:15:55.759 and harmful ways. 00:15:57.259 --> 00:15:58.160 And so we don't 00:16:53.460 And that is good news. 00:16:54.740 --> 00:16:55.580 Earlier we read 00:16:55.580 --> 00:16:56.700 Jesus' statement, 00:16:56.920 --> 00:16:57.820 all authority 00:16:57.820 --> 00:16:58.480 in heaven 00:16:58.480 --> 00:16:59.800 and on earth 00:16:59.800 --> 00:17:00.800 has been given 00:17:00.800 --> 00:17:01.300 to me. 00:17:02.620 --> 00:17:03.500 But that statement 00:17:03.500 --> 00:17:04.640 doesn't come out of nowhere 00:17:04.640 --> 00:17:05.259 at the end 00:17:05.259 --> 00:17:06.180 of Matthew's gospel. 00:17:06.900 --> 00:17:07.440 It's a theme --> 00:17:43.620 to Babylon. 00:17:43.840 --> 00:17:44.240 That was when 00:17:44.240 --> 00:17:45.860 the kingdom vanished 00:17:45.860 --> 00:17:47.960 and never reappeared. 00:17:49.160 --> McDonald's hamburger 00:30:43.180 --> 00:30:45.019 that's been sitting uncovered in the back 00:30:45.019 --> 00:30:46.500 of the fridge for 10 days. 00:30:46.500 --> 00:30:52.339 There's a big difference between the 00:30:52.339 --> 00:30:56.779 authentic biblical Jesus and the kingdom he 00:30:56.779 --> 00:31:00.640 came to establish and the distorted, bland, 00:31:00.980 --> 00:31:05.059 or even counterfeit versions that have grown 00:31:05.059 --> 00:31:05.880 up over time. 00:31:07.460 --> 00:31:11.359 Don't reject the real thing just because there's a 00:31:11.359 --> 00:31:13.160 lot of bad imitations out there. 00:31:13.160 --> 00:31:18.500 No offense if you like McDonald's, but nothing's 00:31:18.500 --> 00:31:20.480 good 10 days later in the fridge, right? 00:31:20.480 --> 00:31:26.500 Now, the other possibility, there's actually one 00:31:26.500 --> 00:31:27.539 other possibility. 00:31:28.099 --> 00:31:30.200 If you've experienced Christianity as something 00:31:30.200 --> 00:31:33.220 oppressive or stifling or confining, 00:31:34.220 --> 00:31:37.880 there's a possibility that you've encountered the 00:31:37.880 --> 00:31:41.539 real Jesus, and Jesus is calling you to surrender 00:31:41.539 --> 00:31:45.000 completely to him, and you are still trying to sit on 00:31:45.000 --> 00:31:45.420 the fence. 00:31:47.900 --> 00:31:50.460 You want to have Jesus, but you still want to be 00:31:50.460 --> 00:31:52.799 your own king, at least in some parts of your life. 00:31:53.519 --> 00:31:56.559 You don't want him messing with some things. 00:31:58.519 --> 00:32:02.180 And Jesus did say, if anyone would come after me, 00:32:03.019 --> 00:32:06.900 you must deny yourself and take up your cross and 00:32:06.900 --> 00:32:07.480 follow me. 00:32:08.680 --> 00:32:11.700 And it's only on the other side of self-denial and 00:32:11.700 --> 00:32:14.920 self-sacrifice that we find the fullness of 00:32:14.920 --> 00:32:16.299 resurrection
