How many of us that 00:02:05.379 --> 00:02:12.299 was the word busy describes our life just now? Right in the air. So just have a look around 00:02:12.300 --> 00:02:18.920 and take that in. Because we are a busy people. You can put your hands down now. We are a busy 00:02:18.920 --> 00:02:24.000 people. It's one of the buzzwords of our day, isn't it? Our generation busy. We are always, 00:02:24.280 --> 00:02:29.340 always busy. Everybody's busy. Everyone I talk to is busy. Even in pastoral ministry, 00:02:29.340 --> 00:02:33.500 when you go to minister's conferences, how do people respond? How are you? Oh, I'm busy. 00:02:33.500 --> 00:02:42.819 We're always busy. In fact, I heard someone the other day refer to our always on world. Our phones 00:02:42.819 --> 00:02:48.300 are never off. Our alerts are always going. Our minds are always active. We live in an always 00:02:48.300 --> 00:02:54.680 on busy world. Well, here's the question that I want us to think about this morning. 00:02:54.680 --> 00:03:02.360 What are we busy with? There are, I don't know if you've ever stopped to think about this, there 00:03:02.360 --> 00:03:10.599 are 10,080 minutes in a week. Just think to yourself, what do you fill them with? What are 00:03:10.599 --> 00:03:16.360 you busy doing? Here's the challenge that God's word would bring to us this morning as those who are 00:03:16.360 --> 00:03:25.500 following Jesus Christ? Are we making room in our busy lives for the things which matter most? 00:03:27.440 --> 00:03:32.280 Now, if you remember last week, we said that we're in this kind of school of discipleship portion 00:03:32.280 --> 00:03:38.520 of Luke's gospel. And the big question that Luke's trying to get his readers to think through 00:03:38.520 --> 00:03:44.000 is what does it mean to follow this King? What does it mean to follow Jesus Christ? 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:50.860 And last week, we looked at the parable of the Good Samaritan, and we saw that following Jesus 00:03:50.860 --> 00:03:57.080 involves sacrificially and compassionately loving and caring for those round about you as those who 00:03:57.080 --> 00:04:06.240 have been made in God's very image. But this week, if last week's question was, or discipleship lesson 00:04:06.240 --> 00:04:13.879 rather, was an external lesson, well, this week Luke gives us an internal one. And it's no accident 00:04:13.879 --> 00:04:18.920 that he's put those two right together next to each other. There's an external part to following Jesus, 00:04:19.339 --> 00:04:26.779 and there's an internal part. In other words, it's not all about doing, it's about being and knowing. 00:04:28.699 --> 00:04:35.180 What are the things which matter most? That's the question that we should be asking right about now. 00:04:35.240 --> 00:04:41.339 Well, we're going to see two things this morning that should mark our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ. 00:04:41.339 --> 00:04:51.539 What are they? Sitting and listening and stopping and praying. In other words, what will a disciple be marked by? 00:04:51.659 --> 00:04:57.579 Well, he or she will be marked by firstly, devotion, and secondly, dependence. 00:04:59.559 --> 00:05:04.819 And if you've got your Bibles there, we pick up the narrative at verse 38 of chapter 10, if you've got it there. 00:05:04.819 --> 00:05:11.399 And Jesus has been welcomed into Martha's house. 00:05:11.939 --> 00:05:13.719 And Luke tells us this story. 00:05:14.680 --> 00:05:23.459 And as he tells us this story, the focus of his story isn't as much on Jesus as it is actually on these two sisters. 00:05:25.219 --> 00:05:27.939 Do you notice that there? Firstly, who do we get in the story? 00:05:27.939 --> 00:05:31.339 Martha, the host. 00:05:32.500 --> 00:05:34.779 How would she describe her life in one word? 00:05:34.839 --> 00:05:35.560 Well, she's busy. 00:05:36.719 --> 00:05:38.120 She's busy. What's she doing? 00:05:38.219 --> 00:05:40.579 She's busy being a good host. 00:05:40.699 --> 00:05:42.560 Now, you can picture her, can't you, in the scene? 00:05:43.860 --> 00:05:45.159 She's chopping the veg. 00:05:45.259 --> 00:05:46.459 She's cooking the stew. 00:05:46.600 --> 00:05:47.600 She's setting the table. 00:05:47.699 --> 00:05:50.220 She's got Jamie Oliver's 15-minute meals out in front of her. 00:05:50.220 --> 00:05:55.360 All of that summed up in those words that Luke gives us at verse 40, if you see. 00:05:56.660 --> 00:05:58.120 Much serving. 00:05:58.240 --> 00:05:58.960 This is Martha. 00:05:59.280 --> 00:06:00.920 Much serving. 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:01.900 That's what she's doing. 00:06:02.920 --> 00:06:08.000 But it's not what she's doing that seems to be the problem, but how she's doing it. 00:06:09.660 --> 00:06:17.660 And the way that Luke tells us the story here, it gives us the clues that we need to be able to ascertain the true state of feet. 00:09:19.259 --> 00:09:22.200 Because we need to understand that in Jesus Christ, 00:09:22.300 --> 00:09:25.980 she's found somebody who's captivated her heart. 00:09:27.160 --> 00:09:28.860 The language of the psalms about close fellowship with God being the most desirable thing in one's life. 00:10:11.639 --> 00:10:16.479 Mary has chosen the good portion and Jesus commends her for it. --> 00:10:52.899 Do you see them in your own life? 00:10:52.899 --> 00:10:56.199 Do you see anxiety clouding your heart? 00:10:57.779 --> 00:11:01.879 Do you find yourself distracted by the pressures of life? 00:11:01.959 --> 00:11:04.120 And do you notice it firstly in your actions? 00:11:05.319 --> 00:11:08.419 And particularly, do you notice it in your words? 00:11:10.860 --> 00:11:12.279 The words in your texts? 00:11:12.279 --> 00:11:20.579 And the tone of your emails, how you reply to people, and the things that you post on Facebook and Twitter, 00:11:20.579 --> 00:11:23.919 do you notice this in your words? 00:11:24.039 --> 00:11:30.600 And maybe even those internal words, those kind of mental manuscripts that we always write, 00:11:30.799 --> 00:11:33.459 the internal things that never actually make it to print. 00:11:33.460 --> 00:11:37.940 Do you see the marks of Martha in your life this morning? 00:11:37.940 --> 00:11:44.980 It's even possible to be distracted, isn't 00:11:57.679 --> 00:12:01.159 And secondly, do you desire the heart of Mary? 00:12:01.159 --> 00:12:06.579 It's a beautiful irony in this story that the one that's held up to us here never actually all the other things that could have occupied her time, 00:12:24.480 --> 00:12:27.379 all the things that could have taken her attention and drawn her away, 00:12:27.700 --> 00:12:32.520 she decides to choose to sit at her Lord's feet and listen to his words. 00:12:34.440 --> 00:12:38.340 And according to Jesus, Mary chose that which was good. 00:12:39.560 --> 00:12:40.440 It was good. chapter 11 here. 00:16:05.899 --> 00:16:06.940 What does Luke tell us? 00:16:06.940 --> 00:16:08.879 He tells us that Jesus was praying. 00:16:09.940 --> 00:16:11.039 He was praying, 00:16:11.200 --> 00:16:12.899 which I don't know about you, 00:16:14.100 --> 00:16:15.620 but that always encourages me. 00:16:17.100 --> 00:16:18.019 That Jesus, 00:16:18.399 --> 00:16:21.639 in amongst the busyness of his life and ministry, 00:16:21.759 --> 00:16:22.980 in amongst all the people, 00:16:23.100 --> 00:16:25.379 all the urgent situations that surrounded him, 00:16:25.440 --> 00:16:27.279 all the needy people that came to him, 00:16:28.019 --> 00:16:29.060 he made time 00:16:29.060 --> 00:16:30.820 and he made prayer, 00:16:30.940 --> 00:16:33.139 that is communion with his heavenly father. 00:16:33.259 --> 00:16:35.779 He made it an absolute priority in his life. 00:16:35.779 --> 00:16:38.939 And by including this here, 00:16:39.000 --> 00:16:41.419 I think Luke's lesson for us as we look on 00:16:41.419 --> 00:16:44.459 is that if dependent prayer was appropriate 00:16:44.459 --> 00:16:46.360 for the creator of the universe, 00:16:47.299 --> 00:16:49.279 then it's certainly appropriate for you 00:16:49.279 --> 00:16:50.360 who would try and follow him. 00:16:51.539 --> 00:16:52.879 It encourages me. 00:16:53.059 --> 00:16:54.120 It challenges me. 00:16:55.399 -->
