And we're going to continue the study that we've 00:00:20.559 --> 00:00:27.120 been in. If you haven't been with us, we've been in Romans for a good amount of time. But after today starts the sabbatical season for a couple of our pastors, and we'll be 00:00:34.160 --> 00:00:41.299 taking a short break after that. Well, last week we were served tremendously, as Jake helped us to 00:00:41.299 --> 00:00:49.040 consider what your Bible refers to as the marks of the true Christian from verses 9 through 16. 00:00:50.060 --> 00:00:56.060 And by the way, a very quick overview. Paul has labored thus far in the book of Romans to demonstrate 00:00:56.060 --> 00:01:05.340 the wonder of God's kindness directed towards those who are condemned by their sin. We know judgment 00:01:05.340 --> 00:01:14.659 stood against us pending. Our hope was vanquished, and an insurmountable list of offenses against the 00:01:14.659 --> 00:01:23.159 reigning king grew in our accounts. And it was at this time, according to Romans chapter 5 verse 6, 00:01:23.159 --> 00:01:32.099 that Christ came and he died for the ungodly. And this great salvation, accomplished according to God's 00:01:32.099 --> 00:01:41.420 sovereign purposes, has resulted in a brand new people. That is us who gather by faith this morning 00:01:41.420 --> 00:01:49.780 in the work of cross. This is a brand new harvest of those who by grace and through faith enjoy the gift 00:01:49.780 --> 00:02:02.079 of justification as object of God's loving affection. So, furthermore, in chapter 12, we've been in this 00:02:02.079 --> 00:02:10.460 over the last month or so, we have been reminded that walking in this grace is only because of the work 00:02:10.460 --> 00:02:18.020 of the Holy Spirit within local bodies. You see, it's the Holy Spirit that applies the gospel to the heart. 00:02:19.060 --> 00:02:27.600 He equips the body with varying gifts to build up one another in love for the praise and the renown of the Lord. 00:02:28.580 --> 00:02:35.760 And yet today, we arrive at a sobering topic, one that Paul directs our attention towards. 00:02:35.759 --> 00:02:44.399 And it's this, the difficult opposition that remains and is ongoing. And this is the opposition that not 00:02:44.399 --> 00:02:53.419 only exists vertically from creature to the creator, but also exists horizontally between fallen creatures 00:02:53.419 --> 00:03:01.379 and the new creation, the church, the seed of the woman against, sorry, the seed of the serpent 00:03:01.379 --> 00:03:09.419 against the seed of the woman. Now, Paul, as we know, has been subjected to great wrong that is done 00:03:09.419 --> 00:03:17.659 against him at the hands of evil men. So, Paul knows the temptation that our flesh feels when wrongdoing 00:03:17.659 --> 00:03:26.259 is directed towards us. He has experienced bodily, physical mistreatment. He's been ridiculed and mocked 00:03:26.259 --> 00:03:33.699 and abandoned at the hands of men. And he knows that there's an urge that lies very close to the human 00:03:33.699 --> 00:03:41.019 heart, one that you have felt and I have felt even this week. The desire to respond to injustice 00:03:41.019 --> 00:03:49.719 with anger and self-vindication. Perhaps this timely word this morning arrives at a time that you 00:03:49.719 --> 00:03:57.539 yourself have struggled in your response when exposed to the sin of others. Perhaps God, by the power of 00:03:57.539 --> 00:04:07.439 his word, intends to break you from your faithless anger that you feel when others wrong you. So, just a few 00:04:07.439 --> 00:04:16.560 questions to prepare us to receive the weight of our text. As you think of your life, have you expressed 00:04:16.560 --> 00:04:26.160 trust trust in the Lord when he allows you to be mistreated by spouses, by children, by friends, or by 00:04:26.160 --> 00:04:34.759 co-workers? Do you trust God when you hear your name being mentioned in a conversation, not a positive one? 00:04:36.240 --> 00:04:43.220 And do you trust the Lord when you've been sharing the good news with someone faithfully? And their response, 00:04:43.220 --> 00:04:51.760 once again, is not only rejection, but perhaps accusations against you. So, in light of these 00:04:51.760 --> 00:04:59.460 expected circumstances, our text calls us this morning to deep and abiding faith that God alone 00:04:59.460 --> 00:05:07.980 is able to properly account for all wrongdoing. We are called to trust that one day righteous judgment 00:05:07.980 --> 00:05:14.759 will be applied by him according to his wise and glorious purposes. And we are called to trust 00:05:14.759 --> 00:05:24.660 that we have been given the assignment to be ambassadors of reconciliation, not ambassadors 00:05:24.660 --> 00:05:33.460 of wrath. Let's open and read our text together. Our verses this morning will be verses 17 through 21, 00:05:33.459 --> 00:05:40.659 but we'll back up just a few more more verses to verse 9 to not interrupt Paul's development. 00:05:45.379 --> 00:05:55.459 God's word says this, let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil, hold fast to what is good, 00:05:55.459 --> 00:06:04.699 love one another with brotherly affection, outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in 00:06:04.699 --> 00:06:15.259 zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer, 00:06:15.979 --> 00:06:24.339 contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you, 00:06:24.339 --> 00:06:33.179 bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly and never be wise in your own sight. 00:06:42.099 --> 00:06:52.339 Now our verses for this morning. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable 00:06:52.339 --> 00:07:01.079 in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 00:07:02.139 --> 00:07:12.000 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God. For it is written, vengeance is mine, 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:21.800 I will repay, says the Lord. To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him 00:07:21.800 --> 00:07:31.399 something to drink, for by so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, 00:07:31.959 --> 00:07:34.699 but overcome evil with good. 00:07:34.699 --> 00:07:42.920 So we have two primary points this morning that I intend to show you from our text and a few other sub points. 00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:49.240 The first main point is seeking the honor of God with our conduct. 00:07:50.360 --> 00:07:56.860 And the second, responding to evil with both wrath and with grace in mind. 00:07:56.860 --> 00:08:06.560 Now let's focus our attention on the significance of what we see in verse 17. It's described as honorable conduct. 00:08:07.220 --> 00:08:08.220 Again, our text says, 00:08:08.360 --> 00:08:15.900 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 00:08:17.080 --> 00:08:24.379 So our text reminds us that the initial and prominent responsibility of Christians when encountering evil 00:08:24.379 --> 00:08:29.680 is to resist the inclination to pay it back in kind. 00:08:30.579 --> 00:08:37.779 To return evil for evil is the easy and the natural inclination that many of us feel. 00:08:38.860 --> 00:08:41.840 This is kind of similar, something that we've been trained by. 00:08:41.960 --> 00:08:47.980 When you are exposed to a physical attack, think of the things that you first do. 00:08:47.980 --> 00:08:53.980 Self-protect, defense, preparation against a future attack, 00:08:54.860 --> 00:09:01.779 even vocalizing your disapproval of the behavior we have experienced. 00:09:02.379 --> 00:09:04.240 We do that as well. 00:09:05.580 --> 00:09:13.159 We recall, though, that Jesus instructs us away from these types of responses in the Sermon on the Mount. 00:09:13.159 --> 00:09:15.379 Now, you've heard that it was said, 00:09:15.539 --> 00:09:17.459 An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. 00:09:17.579 --> 00:09:21.199 But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil. 00:09:22.259 --> 00:09:27.480 But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 00:09:28.379 --> 00:09:31.219 So Paul picks up this same theme, 00:09:31.220 --> 00:09:38.019 and he urges readers to resist responding with self-interest as our great priority 00:09:38.019 --> 00:09:43.120 and instead to strive towards the putting on of honorable conduct. 00:09:43.279 --> 00:09:46.360 So we must ask ourselves, why is this the case? 00:09:47.040 --> 00:09:52.680 What does Paul mean by instructing Christ's followers to acting honorably in the sight of all? 00:09:52.679 --> 00:09:57.239 And why is outward conduct important to Paul 00:09:57.239 --> 00:10:04.299 when God's enemies seem to be getting away with wounding God's people? 00:10:06.699 --> 00:10:12.479 First, it's helpful for us to understand what honorable conduct is that's described here. 00:10:13.779 --> 00:10:19.559 And conduct is normally thought of as the package of outside, outward behavior. 00:10:19.559 --> 00:10:27.019 The things that you do on the outside, which can be observed and seen and witnessed by other people. 00:10:28.179 --> 00:10:34.459 The moral behavior that either conforms or does not conform to a certain set of rules. 00:10:34.639 --> 00:10:36.759 That's what we think about with conduct. 00:10:37.579 --> 00:10:43.519 But we can see here that Paul means more than just commending outward behavior. 00:10:43.519 --> 00:10:55.139 Because he attaches a very important word that is intended to show the essence of how all conduct is to be pursued. 00:10:56.319 --> 00:11:00.399 So honorable refers to what is valued on the inside, 00:11:00.879 --> 00:11:06.360 which deserves recognition in our behavior on the outside. 00:11:06.360 --> 00:11:11.300 The focus here of outward is on outward behavior, 00:11:11.300 --> 00:11:15.539 but it also refers to what we value internally. 00:11:16.779 --> 00:11:22.399 Now, it's helpful for us to just think of a couple other familiar verses in God's word 00:11:22.399 --> 00:11:27.379 that help us to take a broader look at how the word honor is used. 00:11:28.539 --> 00:11:34.019 The exhortation to act honorably actually appears earlier in chapter 12, verse 10. 00:11:34.019 --> 00:11:35.740 Remember that it says, 00:11:36.340 --> 00:11:52.579 In this passage, brotherly honor is commended because this is where God has assigned value and worth. 00:11:53.319 --> 00:11:55.919 God has valued the brethren. 00:11:55.919 --> 00:12:05.259 He has purchased and redeemed a group of people that belong to him at the cost of his son's sacrifice. 00:12:06.099 --> 00:12:10.459 Therefore, the brethren are deserving of our honor. 00:12:11.919 --> 00:12:13.919 We see another example in the fifth commandment. 00:12:14.620 --> 00:12:21.019 Here God instructs Israel to honor fathers and honor mothers. 00:12:21.019 --> 00:12:30.919 Again, this is helpful because it locates honor as a derivative of what God himself esteems and what he values. 00:12:31.799 --> 00:12:38.980 So honor is not primarily about maintaining respectful standards or guidelines. 00:12:39.319 --> 00:12:43.059 It's not about a moral code, although it may include that. 00:12:43.059 --> 00:12:52.159 But it's more directly about pointing us towards that which is worthy of being held to the highest honor, 00:12:52.699 --> 00:13:00.479 even in the face of opposition by God's enemies who question God's honor. 00:13:02.059 --> 00:13:07.059 Consider for a moment with me a text you may have heard from the prophet Isaiah. 00:13:07.059 --> 00:13:10.459 Isaiah 42, verse 8 says, 00:13:10.459 --> 00:13:12.699 I am the Lord. 00:13:13.439 --> 00:13:16.519 That is my name, my glory. 00:13:17.099 --> 00:13:20.219 I give to no other, 00:13:21.279 --> 00:13:24.239 nor my praise to carved idols. 00:13:25.339 --> 00:13:33.879 This pursuit of God's own honor never changes in the providential outworking of his plan. 00:13:33.879 --> 00:13:38.980 John chapter 5, verse 21 through 23. 00:13:39.980 --> 00:13:43.419 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, 00:13:43.539 --> 00:13:47.820 so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 00:13:49.019 --> 00:13:51.019 For the Father judges no one, 00:13:51.519 --> 00:13:55.299 but has given all judgment to the Son for this purpose, 00:13:55.299 --> 00:14:00.199 that all may honor the Son, 00:14:01.120 --> 00:14:04.179 just as they honor the Father. 00:14:04.959 --> 00:14:09.959 We see even the judgment of God is carried out in a way 00:14:09.959 --> 00:14:16.919 that is purposely meant to ascribe honor to the value of Christ. 00:14:16.919 --> 00:14:25.120 God indeed holds righteous jealousy for the honor of his name, 00:14:25.259 --> 00:14:27.099 and it's a good thing that he does. 00:14:28.099 --> 00:14:30.059 The honor of his faithful character, 00:14:30.279 --> 00:14:34.039 the honor of his saving work in Christ, 00:14:34.620 --> 00:14:36.579 is our theme as well. 00:14:37.279 --> 00:14:42.059 And he desires that this honor should be held in the highest regard 00:14:42.059 --> 00:14:43.459 when things are going well, 00:14:43.459 --> 00:14:47.979 or when we are exposed to the sinful outworking, 00:14:48.159 --> 00:14:53.239 the evil rebellion that sometimes the Lord has called us to. 00:14:54.259 --> 00:14:57.579 You see, there's more at stake in responding to evil 00:14:57.579 --> 00:15:00.619 than we normally think of. 00:15:01.359 --> 00:15:05.919 The goal is not just to avoid losing our cool. 00:15:05.919 --> 00:15:09.599 As Jake reminded us last week, 00:15:09.740 --> 00:15:14.099 there's an expectation that evil will be the regular course 00:15:14.099 --> 00:15:17.779 for all Christians in their discipleship. 00:15:18.419 --> 00:15:20.819 It ought not to surprise any one of us 00:15:20.819 --> 00:15:23.399 when we're faced with frequent opportunities 00:15:23.399 --> 00:15:29.279 to express honor to God as we encounter evil. 00:15:30.559 --> 00:15:33.539 Romans 12, 14 says, 00:15:33.539 --> 00:15:35.459 Bless those who persecute you. 00:15:35.620 --> 00:15:37.139 Bless and do not curse them. 00:15:37.240 --> 00:15:38.360 2 Timothy 3, 00:15:38.839 --> 00:15:42.219 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life 00:15:42.219 --> 00:15:44.679 will be persecuted. 00:15:45.459 --> 00:15:49.179 Notice the certainty of that expectation. accident. 00:16:09.939 --> 00:16:11.579 It's not an inconvenience. 00:16:11.679 --> 00:16:13.240 It's not a mistake. 00:16:13.559 --> 00:16:16.740 It is an intentional tool the Lord uses 00:16:16.740 --> 00:16:20.919 to reveal the surpassing worth, glory, 00:16:21.559 --> 00:16:24.120 and honor of His name. 00:16:24.120 --> 00:16:30.960 So why so much focus already on this one word, honor? 00:16:32.279 --> 00:16:34.659 Well, if we are honest too often, 00:16:34.860 --> 00:16:39.960 honor for God is the furthest thing from our minds 00:16:39.960 --> 00:16:43.000 when we are exposed to wrongdoing. 00:16:44.060 --> 00:16:46.320 Instead, we labor for other things 00:16:46.320 --> 00:16:49.200 that we value more in the moment. 00:16:49.200 --> 00:16:52.420 We cling to the esteem and for God. 00:17:29.039 --> 00:17:33.159 Let's continue forward by looking at the last few verses 00:17:33.159 --> 00:17:37.559 and the last few words in verse 17 and into 18. 00:17:37.559 -->
