You're going to need that open. 00:00:04.379 --> 00:00:09.740 But I want to kick off looking back to Luke's first letter to his mate Theophilus in Luke. 00:00:10.480 --> 00:00:15.400 Because in Luke chapter 8, Jesus tells his boys and disciples a story. 00:00:16.379 --> 00:00:17.800 It's known as the parable of the sower. 00:00:19.140 --> 00:00:20.960 And to a large degree, the point of the story is this. 00:00:21.260 --> 00:00:23.280 Living things grow. 00:00:24.580 --> 00:00:28.359 A farmer in that scene wants a harvest, needs a harvest. 00:00:28.359 --> 00:00:32.119 And so he goes mental, sowing this seed everywhere. 00:00:32.259 --> 00:00:34.119 He doesn't mind where it lands. 00:00:34.619 --> 00:00:37.200 Wherever he goes, he's just sowing it all over the place. 00:00:38.119 --> 00:00:39.840 Now some of it lands on a path. 00:00:40.719 --> 00:00:43.519 Gets trampled on, gets eaten by birds. --> 00:01:16.799 he's actually preparing them for life in the book of Acts. 00:01:16.799 --> 00:01:27.259 He's saying, listen boys, as the farmer sowed the seed, preach the gospel to everyone and to anyone. 00:01:27.459 --> 00:01:28.719 Don't be stingy. 00:01:28.819 --> 00:01:31.079 Don't be selective about the who or the where. 00:01:31.920 --> 00:01:35.259 Everyone and everywhere needs to hear 00:02:43.400 --> 00:02:46.280 If you were here last week, I presume you did Acts chapter 5, 00:02:46.840 --> 00:02:49.580 and you will have heard a Pharisee guy called Gamaliel say this, 00:02:49.580 --> 00:02:53.580 that actually if this is just some kind of mad rebel revolutionary, 00:02:54.380 --> 00:02:57.860 it will come to nothing like seed planted among the thorns. 00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:04.520 But if it's from God, this living thing will grow. 00:03:04.640 --> 00:03:06.100 To nick another one of Jesus' parables, 00:03:06.480 --> 00:03:10.780 from a teeny weeny little mustard seed to a mahousive tree. 00:03:10.780 --> 00:03:14.020 Because living things grow. 00:03:14.180 --> 00:03:20.219 And in Luke and in Acts, it is the word of God that gives life and grows life. 00:03:21.280 --> 00:03:27.939 The word of God will spread, the church will increase, and the kingdom will grow. 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:32.420 And Luke is so desperate for us to see this in the book of Acts, 00:03:32.639 --> 00:03:36.240 that he gives us about six headlines from a newspaper 00:03:36.240 --> 00:03:39.620 that tell you this time and time and time and time again. 00:03:39.760 --> 00:03:42.159 You've seen it already in Acts by this point, 00:03:42.300 --> 00:03:44.120 but he then wants to make six headlines. 00:03:45.060 --> 00:03:48.460 He's seen already 120 in an upper room in Acts 1. 00:03:48.900 --> 00:03:52.439 That expanded to about 3,000 in Acts 2 after Pentecost. 00:03:52.800 --> 00:03:55.600 In Acts chapter 4, that goes to over 5,000. 00:03:55.960 --> 00:03:59.080 And he wants to keep giving you the point that living things grow. 00:03:59.080 --> 00:04:02.180 So, open your Bibles, track with me through his headlines. 00:04:02.680 --> 00:04:04.060 Acts chapter 6, verse 7. 00:04:04.120 --> 00:04:04.980 We had it read to us. 00:04:04.979 --> 00:04:09.939 The word of God spread, the number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, 00:04:10.280 --> Flick over to Acts chapter 9, verse 31. 00:04:20.279 --> 00:04:21.199 Second headline. 00:04:22.399 --> 00:04:26.779 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace, 00:04:26.899 --> 00:04:30.300 was strengthened, and living in the fear of the Lord 00:04:30.300 --> 00:04:34.060 and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in number. 00:04:34.060 --> 00:05:16.939 --> 00:05:20.860 He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ 00:05:20.860 --> 00:05:24.639 with boldness and without hindrance. 00:05:24.759 --> 00:05:25.379 What is the point? 00:05:26.240 --> 00:05:27.659 Living things grow. 00:05:27.660 --> 00:05:33.420 As the word of God spreads, the church increases, and the kingdom grows. 00:05:34.780 --> like the kind of thorny ground 00:06:08.479 --> 00:06:13.219 because Ananias and Sapphira have been lured away by the pleasures of this world. 00:06:14.719 --> 00:06:20.379 You think Acts chapter 6, finally, after those two, we've got good soil. 00:06:20.379 --> 00:06:27.120 But as most teenage boys know, growing is rarely without growing pains. 00:06:28.100 --> 00:06:30.420 And that's exactly what you see in Acts chapter 6. 00:06:30.519 --> 00:06:31.560 So read again verse 1. 00:06:32.199 --> 00:06:34.779 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, 00:06:35.360 --> 00:06:38.920 the Hellenistic Jews complained against the Hebraic Jews 00:06:38.920 --> 00:06:44.500 because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 00:06:44.500 --> 00:06:47.120 Now here's the issue. 00:06:47.259 --> 00:06:52.500 And it's kind of like a complicated ming and onion that's got multiple layers. 00:06:52.759 --> 00:06:55.759 The first layer is that the church is just growing. 00:06:57.240 --> 00:06:59.319 I'm a kind of 90s boy in terms of music, 00:06:59.439 --> 00:07:01.339 so it's kind of the notorious B.I.G. problem 00:07:01.339 --> 00:07:04.819 where the more people you come across, the more problems you see. 00:07:05.199 --> 00:07:07.819 As the church is increasing, there's creaks. 00:07:07.899 --> 00:07:08.379 It groans. 00:07:08.379 --> 00:07:13.800 But the second stage is that as it groans, there's complaining. 00:07:14.100 --> 00:07:15.759 They're probably speaking Hebrew. 00:07:15.899 --> 00:07:17.379 Obviously some of them are speaking Greek. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:19.579 But although they're in Jerusalem, 00:07:19.719 --> 00:07:22.699 there's that kind of natural Scottish language of gurning. 00:07:23.439 --> 00:07:25.120 Something's wrong here in Jerusalem. 00:07:26.040 --> 00:07:26.740 Now what's going on? 00:07:26.819 --> 00:07:29.360 Third layer, there's tension. 00:07:30.439 --> 00:07:36.579 Potential prejudice between Hebraic Jews and the Hellenistic Jews. 00:07:36.579 --> 00:07:38.659 Now they're just two different groups of people. 00:07:38.839 --> 00:07:41.000 One from outside the city who spoke Greek. 00:07:41.500 --> 00:07:44.699 Others from inside the city that spoke Hebrew. 00:07:44.919 --> 00:07:49.000 But it seems to be that the final complicating layer is 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:51.759 that some people are looking at it and going, 00:07:52.519 --> 00:07:58.039 our group are not getting the necessary food that our widows need. 00:07:59.199 --> 00:08:00.479 And they're starving. 00:08:00.480 --> 00:08:07.020 Now a lot of older folk in that time would have come from outside the city 00:08:07.020 --> 00:08:11.720 back to Jerusalem because they would want to die and be buried in the holy city. 00:08:12.700 --> 00:08:17.980 Now it's always the Bible's view that widows should be cared for by their own families. 00:08:18.560 --> 00:08:20.060 See that in 1 Timothy chapter 5. 00:08:20.420 --> 00:08:23.020 But if their own families aren't around or aren't able, 00:08:23.019 --> 00:08:29.240 then the Bible prescribes that it is the church that ought to care for the most alone, 00:08:29.359 --> 00:08:32.019 the most vulnerable in their community. 00:08:33.120 --> 00:08:34.480 But here's the problem. 00:08:35.539 --> 00:08:37.360 The church is growing great, 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:40.740 but widows are starving. 00:08:41.299 --> 00:08:42.519 Far from great. 00:08:43.960 --> 00:08:49.120 And we need to see the potentially nasty flavor to this. 00:08:49.120 --> 00:08:54.299 As people look at it and see that it's one specific people group 00:08:54.299 --> 00:08:56.060 whose widows are being overlooked, 00:08:56.379 --> 00:08:59.659 people are at best questioning it. 00:08:59.679 --> 00:09:00.779 Maybe at worst they're going, 00:09:01.399 --> 00:09:07.080 is there some institutional racism inside this church in Jerusalem? 00:09:08.379 --> 00:09:09.720 Are the widows being overlooked, 00:09:10.259 --> 00:09:12.700 especially because of where they're from 00:09:12.700 --> 00:09:14.919 or maybe just the language that they speak? 00:09:14.919 --> 00:09:18.899 Now you start off the chapter going, 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:19.679 oh, the church is growing. 00:09:19.819 --> 00:09:20.799 Wahey, happy days. 00:09:21.000 --> 00:09:21.979 And all of a sudden you're going, 00:09:22.139 --> 00:09:23.779 flip, this church could split. 00:09:25.879 --> 00:09:28.779 This could be a devastating moment in the book of Acts. 00:09:30.759 --> 00:09:32.099 Now what I want to show you this morning, 00:09:32.579 --> 00:09:34.120 we could go a million different ways with this text. 00:09:34.259 --> 00:09:36.379 All I want to do is give you four applications 00:09:36.379 --> 00:09:39.480 for you guys as Brunsfield Evangelical Church. 00:09:40.039 --> 00:09:42.019 Some of them are going to be for all of us together. 00:09:42.459 --> 00:09:44.439 Some of them are specifically going to be for the elders. 00:09:44.919 --> 00:09:47.959 But the first one is one that hits us all together 00:09:47.959 --> 00:09:49.099 and it's simple. 00:09:50.179 --> 00:09:50.579 Church. 00:09:50.719 --> 00:09:51.539 So speaking of all of us, 00:09:51.699 --> 00:09:56.419 church, people must not be overlooked. 00:09:58.559 --> 00:10:00.639 As a church, our primary responsibility 00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:04.179 is to care to one another in the church. 00:10:04.459 --> 00:10:06.879 Now you could instantly kind of come back at me and go, 00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:08.799 hang on, Primey, we're in the book of Acts here. 00:10:09.019 --> 00:10:11.339 The whole point is we're meant to take the gospel to the world. 00:10:11.340 --> 00:10:16.500 However, one of the clearest ways that the church witnesses to the world 00:10:16.500 --> 00:10:20.139 is the love and care that we show for our own people. 00:10:21.740 --> 00:10:25.399 And in the church, people must not be overlooked. 00:10:25.519 --> 00:10:27.720 You've seen that already in Acts chapter 2 at the end, 00:10:28.100 --> 00:10:29.740 again at the end of Acts chapter 4. 00:10:30.100 --> 00:10:31.860 If someone is in need, 00:10:32.080 --> 00:10:34.220 we ought to be the ones who meet that need. 00:10:34.220 --> 00:10:37.320 If the church has people who are hungry, 00:10:37.740 --> 00:10:39.800 the church should feed them their food. 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:41.399 If someone is in need, 00:10:41.580 --> 00:10:43.300 it is our responsibility. 00:10:44.759 --> 00:10:45.920 However, here's the struggle. 00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:49.300 And hasn't that been particularly clear in the last 18 months? 00:10:49.960 --> 00:10:52.420 That there are periods in the church of life 00:10:52.420 --> 00:10:56.200 where it's easy to accidentally overlook people. 00:10:56.200 --> 00:10:59.180 Especially when everyone can't be in the room. 00:11:00.180 --> 00:11:02.440 We don't have a scooby who's watching this. 00:11:04.140 --> 00:11:05.960 And so we need to make sure in this season 00:11:05.960 --> 00:11:08.040 that the people we haven't seen for a while 00:11:08.040 --> 00:11:09.200 or heard from a while 00:11:09.200 --> 00:11:13.300 may not be either physically or spiritually being overlooked. 00:11:13.420 --> 00:11:14.780 And whose responsibility is that? 00:11:16.220 --> 00:11:17.200 All of us. 00:11:18.120 --> 00:11:18.520 Church. 00:11:19.160 --> 00:11:21.220 People must not be overlooked. 00:11:21.540 --> 00:11:21.879 However, 00:11:23.580 --> 00:11:25.259 it's actually more sinister here. 00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:29.660 The sinister reality is that even within a church, 00:11:29.759 --> 00:11:34.600 it can be possible for people to be deliberately overlooked. 00:11:36.200 --> 00:11:37.360 In the book of Acts, 00:11:38.460 --> 00:11:40.520 Luke wants to show us on repeat 00:11:40.520 --> 00:11:43.080 the attractiveness of the purpose of God 00:11:43.080 --> 00:11:45.379 to bring people from diverse backgrounds 00:11:45.379 --> 00:11:47.780 into the church of his son. 00:11:47.780 --> 00:11:49.640 He repeatedly shows us 00:11:49.640 --> 00:11:51.780 the power of the gospel of Jesus 00:11:51.780 --> 00:11:54.560 to unite people who were once enemies 00:11:54.559 --> 00:11:57.519 and to break down the barriers and walls 00:11:57.519 --> 00:12:00.759 that have culturally divided people for centuries. 00:12:01.759 --> 00:12:03.859 The church is meant to be multicolored, 00:12:04.119 --> 00:12:04.779 multilingual, 00:12:05.139 --> 00:12:06.339 and multiclass. 00:12:06.619 --> 00:12:06.939 However, 00:12:07.299 --> 00:12:09.399 the book of Acts is not rose-tinted. 00:12:09.519 --> 00:12:10.439 It is real life. 00:12:12.239 --> 00:12:13.000 And since then, 00:12:13.039 --> 00:12:13.979 and probably still today, 00:12:14.479 --> 00:12:16.519 some of the prejudices that we held 00:12:16.519 --> 00:12:17.839 before we were Christians 00:12:17.839 --> 00:12:20.179 continue to have a hangover 00:12:20.179 --> 00:12:21.659 now that we are Christians, 00:12:22.459 --> 00:12:26.819 which means we need to be on guard about this 00:12:26.819 --> 00:12:28.859 in Grace Mount Community Church 00:12:28.859 --> 00:12:30.739 and in Brunsfield Evangelical Church. 00:12:32.599 --> 00:12:35.599 Now, maybe that's on issues like classism. 00:12:37.039 --> 00:12:38.299 And we need to make sure 00:12:38.299 --> 00:12:40.479 that we don't look down on people 00:12:40.479 --> 00:12:42.179 because of where they have come from 00:12:42.179 --> 00:12:43.839 or what their backstory has been. 00:12:43.840 --> 00:12:45.940 In the church, 00:12:46.280 --> 00:12:47.820 Christ unites us 00:12:47.820 --> 00:12:49.960 more 00:13:17.120 we need to be asking ourselves 00:13:17.120 --> 00:13:17.980 the hard question 00:13:17.980 --> 00:13:19.019 that we are not 00:13:19.019 --> 00:13:22.019 in some subtle, unconscious way 00:13:22.019 --> 00:13:24.160 overlooking some people. 00:13:26.040 --> 00:13:28.139 When our church is predominantly white 00:13:28.139 --> 00:13:28.820 in a community 00:13:28.820 --> 00:13:30.320 that is increasingly diverse, 00:13:30.660 --> 00:13:32.300 we need to ask the hard questions 00:13:32.300 --> 00:13:33.120 that we are not 00:13:33.120 --> 00:13:34.900 maybe even deliberately Acts 6. 00:13:52.699 --> 00:13:53.799 Widows are being overlooked 00:13:53.799 --> 00:13:55.779 from one particular people group. 00:13:55.860 --> 00:13:57.500 Now, how do the apostles respond? 00:13:58.259 --> 00:13:59.519 Have a look back in Acts 6. 00:13:59.639 --> 00:14:00.399 Look at verse 2. 00:14:00.399 --> 00:14:04.039 So, the 12, that's the apostles, 00:14:04.840 --> 00:14:07.100 gathered all of the disciples together 00:14:07.100 --> 00:14:08.959 and said, 00:14:09.179 --> 00:14:11.139 it would not be right for us 00:14:11.139 --> 00:14:13.259 to neglect the ministry 00:14:13.259 --> 00:14:14.600 of the word of God 00:14:14.600 --> 00:14:16.939 in order to wait on tables. 00:14:17.220 --> 00:14:18.519 So notice what the apostles do. 00:14:18.860 --> 00:14:19.699 They take the lead. 00:14:19.840 --> 00:14:20.759 They do it immediately. 00:14:20.919 --> 00:14:22.179 No time for this to fester. 00:14:22.639 --> 00:14:23.980 And they do it by gathering
