Luke, chapters 9, Jesus changes. 00:02:19.740 --> 00:02:24.099 Luke changes his tone, his direction. 00:02:24.620 --> 00:02:28.439 And he starts talking about Jesus making his way towards Jerusalem. 00:02:28.439 --> 00:02:30.680 It's kind of like a travelogue of Jesus' journey. 00:02:30.799 --> 00:02:35.299 And along the way, Jesus teaches what it means to be a disciple. 00:02:35.300 --> 00:02:36.560 So what is a disciple? 00:02:36.960 --> 00:02:42.939 Well, we can think about a disciple as being a follower, somebody who follows after Jesus. 00:02:42.939 --> 00:02:52.139 When Jesus was alive, when Jesus walked the earth, people did literally drop the tools that they were working with and followed after him. 00:02:52.180 --> 00:02:53.180 They walked after him. 00:02:54.139 --> 00:02:56.620 We can also think about a disciple as a learner. 00:02:56.620 --> 00:03:09.560 So somebody who, in Jesus' day, wanted to learn from a great teacher would come and sit at their feet and would absorb their teaching, would listen, would try to emulate their life, trying to live their life the way that they did. 00:03:09.560 --> 00:03:14.640 And today, as disciples, we metaphorically sit at Jesus' feet. 00:03:15.199 --> 00:03:21.920 Through the power of the Spirit and the power of the Word, we sit at Jesus' feet and we learn from him. 00:03:22.920 --> 00:03:27.140 Not in a physical way, but in no less real way. 00:03:27.139 --> 00:03:35.559 Well, in the passage that we read today, we're going to see that to be a disciple also means to be a messenger. 00:03:37.099 --> 00:03:42.559 So Corey just read Jesus appointing 72 disciples. 00:03:43.319 --> 00:03:45.719 Others, they're called here, they're disciples. 00:03:46.560 --> 00:03:48.739 And he sends them out before him. 00:03:48.779 --> 00:03:51.859 He calls them in and he sends them out. 00:03:51.860 --> 00:03:59.120 Tonight, I'd like to look through these 16 verses in three kind of parts, these sections. 00:03:59.760 --> 00:04:02.860 So first of all, the way that Jesus sends them. 00:04:03.240 --> 00:04:05.320 And then the message that he wants them to deliver. 00:04:05.500 --> 00:04:10.460 And then just how serious, how important it is that they go. 00:04:10.860 --> 00:04:14.660 So we can call it the sending, the saying, the seriousness, maybe. 00:04:15.380 --> 00:04:16.560 Okay, so first off, the other end, there's lots of guys who are ministers in the free church 00:04:59.500 --> 00:05:00.539 who are reaching retirement age. 00:05:00.579 --> 00:05:04.959 So we need a conveyor belt of ministers to come in and replace those people. 00:05:05.039 --> 00:05:06.860 And when we talk about the need for ministers, 00:05:06.959 --> 00:05:08.680 we talk about it a lot at seminary. there's so many people in congregations all over Scotland 00:05:53.939 --> 00:05:58.959 that don't have people opening the Bible for them on a weekly basis, 00:05:58.959 --> 00:06:01.379 and not pasting congregations. 00:06:01.699 --> 00:06:03.300 Those are difficult situations to be in. 00:06:04.459 --> 00:06:09.039 But secondly, if we were to think about this passage in isolation, 00:06:09.659 --> 00:06:13.240 not to think about what came before it or what comes after it, 00:06:14.019 --> 00:06:16.819 we could think, we could be mistaken for thinking 00:06:16.819 --> 00:06:19.719 that this passage is about the professionals. 00:06:21.039 --> 00:06:24.639 God, please give us more full-time gospel workers. 00:06:25.519 --> 00:06:27.379 And that is a good prayer to pray. 00:06:28.599 --> 00:06:29.579 But here's the thing. 00:06:29.579 --> 00:06:31.839 Right before this chapter, the start of chapter 9, 00:06:32.560 --> 00:06:36.399 Jesus takes his 12 disciples, his closest confidants, 00:06:36.859 --> 00:06:38.819 the guys that he's been with the most, 00:06:39.359 --> 00:06:40.680 and he sends them out. 00:06:41.599 --> 00:06:43.279 And then when he sends these 72 now, 00:06:43.680 --> 00:06:45.459 the words that he uses to send them, 00:06:45.500 --> 00:06:48.019 and what he tells them to do is incredibly similar 00:06:48.019 --> 00:06:50.620 in language to what he says to the 12. 00:06:52.519 --> 00:06:54.579 Our passage here doesn't say disciples. 00:06:54.579 --> 00:06:56.879 It says 72 others. 00:06:58.319 --> 00:07:01.279 But at one point in Jesus' life, 00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:07.479 his disciples and his family had thought that he had lost it. 00:07:08.019 --> 00:07:10.360 And they went out to find him and to take him back 00:07:10.360 --> 00:07:11.620 and to save him from harm. 00:07:12.459 --> 00:07:14.639 And they couldn't get near him because the house was so full. 00:07:14.639 --> 00:07:17.860 And they gave message and said, 00:07:18.079 --> 00:07:19.539 we need to speak to Jesus. 00:07:19.699 --> 00:07:21.779 And they said to Jesus, 00:07:21.959 --> 00:07:24.319 your disciples and your family are here. 00:07:24.459 --> 00:07:26.300 And he pointed to the people that are around him. 00:07:26.319 --> 00:07:28.259 And he said, these are my disciples. 00:07:28.699 --> 00:07:29.579 This is my family. 00:07:29.579 --> 00:07:37.779 So the role of disciple is not for a full-time employed person. 00:07:38.560 --> 00:07:41.240 This is not a passage just about ministers. 00:07:42.439 --> 00:07:46.740 This is a passage about anyone who listens and obeys to Jesus. 00:07:47.219 --> 00:07:50.479 Because anyone who listens and obeys to Jesus is a disciple. 00:07:51.899 --> 00:07:54.979 And part of as well. 00:08:20.959 --> 00:08:22.919 And I think it relates to the book of Genesis. 00:08:23.599 --> 00:08:25.879 So after the flood, 00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:28.179 and of course the world was destroyed 00:08:28.180 --> 00:08:29.459 because of his wickedness, 00:08:30.040 --> 00:08:31.860 God saved Noah and his family. 00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:34.519 And in Genesis chapter 10, 00:08:34.600 --> 00:08:37.220 we have the nations of the world 00:08:37.220 --> 00:08:40.980 that come from Noah's legacy, 00:08:41.200 --> 00:08:42.580 from his lineage. 00:08:43.860 --> 00:08:46.399 And they go out and they fill the earth. 00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:49.779 And in the Greek version of the Old Testament, 00:08:49.779 --> 00:08:55.899 which was really in common use when the letter of the gospel of Luke was written, 00:08:57.939 --> 00:08:59.620 there's 72 nations. 00:08:59.620 --> 00:09:05.879 So I think what we're saying here is the breaking news that Jesus has come, 00:09:06.600 --> 00:09:10.320 that the kingdom of God is breaking in, 00:09:11.399 --> 00:09:13.159 and we're being sent out into the world, 00:09:13.539 --> 00:09:14.500 the whole world, 00:09:14.860 --> 00:09:15.740 all the nations, 00:09:16.299 --> 00:09:17.100 to tell them. 00:09:18.060 --> 00:09:18.960 72 people, 00:09:19.860 --> 00:09:23.179 72 messengers representing 72 nations. 00:09:23.179 --> 00:09:26.599 but this is not 00:09:26.599 --> 00:09:31.659 just merely a sending out. 00:09:31.819 --> 00:09:33.000 It's sending out with a message 00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:36.679 to go to all the nations of the world 00:09:36.679 --> 00:09:38.659 and to bring those nations, 00:09:39.459 --> 00:09:41.039 God's people in those nations, 00:09:41.199 --> 00:09:42.019 back to him. 00:09:43.120 --> 00:09:44.359 Not the same as before, 00:09:45.519 --> 00:09:48.199 but as a new kind of kingdom people 00:09:48.200 --> 00:09:50.580 under the kingship of Jesus. 00:09:52.660 --> 00:09:53.580 This is the start,
