life of love. 00:04:04.659 --> 00:04:07.799 Sacrifice produces sacrifice. 00:04:07.800 --> 00:04:18.620 Now, when I say generosity, I'm not meaning exclusively or primarily money. 00:04:20.280 --> 00:04:23.500 I mean generosity in all of life. 00:04:25.259 --> 00:04:29.019 Money is but a means of transaction. 00:04:29.019 --> 00:04:33.560 It's a commodity in the same way that my time is a 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:46.579 I'm talking here about generosity in all of life. 00:04:46.659 --> 00:04:50.979 With times, talents, treasures, testimony, relationships, hospitality, forgiveness. 00:05:05.579 And it's called the travel narrative in Luke because Jesus is traveling. 00:05:07.259 --> 00:05:08.259 Who would have thought? 00:05:08.919 --> 00:05:11.500 He's on a journey with his disciples. 00:05:12.699 --> 00:05:18.439 Starts at Luke chapter 9 verse 51 where Jesus resolutely, it says there, 00:05:18.519 --> 00:05:20.779 he set his face to Jerusalem. 00:05:20.779 --> 00:05:28.599 And it ends in chapter 19 verse 44 when we discover that Jesus has arrived in Jerusalem. 00:05:29.379 --> 00:05:33.859 And all the way along he teaches his disciples what it means to follow him. 00:05:34.879 --> 00:05:36.899 And he says some radical stuff. 00:05:38.439 --> 00:05:42.719 What we discover in the travel narrative is through the stories Jesus tells 00:05:42.719 --> 00:05:47.879 that he turns the thinking of the world upside down and inside out. 00:05:47.879 --> 00:05:51.459 Hence the graphic we have in front of us of a wheat field that's upside down. 00:05:51.800 --> 00:05:52.899 Not because we're in Australia. 00:05:53.379 --> 00:05:54.980 It's because it's upside down. 00:05:55.259 --> 00:06:03.100 The travel narrative of all these stories that Jesus tells is he messes with the value system 00:06:03.100 --> 00:06:04.240 of the world in which we live. 00:06:04.240 --> 00:06:15.500 And there's probably no greater story, more controversial story he told 00:06:15.500 --> 00:06:19.639 than the story of the Good Samaritan that Nolene just read out for us just then in chapter 10. 00:06:19.819 --> 00:06:21.000 So three points today. of this story and the mandate for the generous life is where an expert in biblical law 00:06:39.699 --> 00:06:46.000 asks Jesus what must he do to receive eternal life. 00:06:46.340 --> 00:06:52.120 And we are told that he asked Jesus this question because he wants to trap Jesus. 00:06:52.120 --> 00:07:03.759 He wants to trap Jesus because Jesus has been doing what they think he shouldn't be doing. 00:07:04.280 --> 00:07:08.100 And that is welcoming people, welcoming sinners. 00:07:08.800 --> 00:07:14.100 Jesus hanging out with people that he shouldn't be hanging out with. 00:07:15.540 --> 00:07:18.019 And in their mind, he's disobeying the law. 00:07:19.079 --> 00:07:20.079 Jesus is open. 00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:21.759 He is friendly to sinners. 00:07:22.519 --> 00:07:31.599 And this scholar in this moment wants to expose Jesus as someone who does not respect the word of God. 00:07:32.579 --> 00:07:33.839 That's his intent. 00:07:34.779 --> 00:07:37.120 He asked Jesus, what must I do to be saved? 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:40.379 What must I do to be accepted by God? 00:07:40.500 --> 00:07:46.000 And he expects Jesus as someone who's not taking God's word seriously to say, 00:07:46.199 --> 00:07:47.879 it doesn't matter. 00:07:47.879 --> 00:07:50.040 Look, in the end, we'll all get there. 00:07:50.639 --> 00:07:52.219 In the end, it'll all be fine. 00:07:53.980 --> 00:07:55.300 Just do some good stuff. 00:07:55.420 --> 00:07:57.379 That's what he's expecting Jesus to say. 00:07:58.439 --> 00:08:00.040 God will accept everyone. 00:08:00.040 --> 00:08:03.700 But
