Probably in different ways. 00:43:47.980 --> 00:43:55.980 But most of us have never known a man quite like Bill Brock. 00:43:55.980 --> 00:44:06.980 God gave him a very special family, as has been evidenced by many things that we have heard, 00:44:06.980 --> 00:44:10.980 not only by the family testifying and sharing their thoughts with us, 00:44:10.980 --> 00:44:17.980 but singing together and realizing that the choruses that we've sung were written by Merle, 00:44:17.980 --> 00:44:21.980 and the ministry that Bill and Merle have had together. 00:44:23.980 --> 00:44:31.980 It was 2.10 on Sunday morning, when the phone started ringing, 00:44:31.980 --> 00:44:35.980 and the message came from Lynn. 00:44:35.980 --> 00:44:41.980 Dad just died with a massive heart attack. 00:44:43.980 --> 00:44:48.980 About 10 minutes later, I was on the phone with Jeff, 00:44:49.980 --> 00:44:51.980 and Jeff said, 00:44:51.980 --> 00:44:53.980 It's a dream. 00:44:54.980 --> 00:44:58.980 I keep feeling that I'm going to wake up 00:44:58.980 --> 00:45:02.980 and find out it really didn't happen. 00:45:02.980 --> 00:45:07.980 At 3.30, I was on the phone with Merle, 00:45:07.980 --> 00:45:10.980 giving her time to get back from the hospital, 00:45:10.980 --> 00:45:16.980 and hearing how Bill had just so suddenly, 00:45:16.980 --> 00:45:21.980 after they had had a snack and gone to bed, 00:45:21.980 --> 00:45:26.980 just instantaneously gone home to be with the Lord. 00:45:26.980 --> 00:45:33.980 Didn't tell her he was going, 00:45:33.980 --> 00:45:35.980 didn't tell any of the family or any of the rest of us, 00:45:35.980 --> 00:45:37.980 but just like Bill. 00:45:37.980 --> 00:45:42.980 I guess for most of us, 00:45:42.980 --> 00:45:49.980 we didn't realize that Bill could actually die. 00:45:49.980 --> 00:45:58.980 I thought about 25 of the leading men in the United States 00:45:58.980 --> 00:46:01.980 and the one least likely to die, 00:46:01.980 --> 00:46:02.980 and it was Bill Brock. 00:46:02.980 --> 00:46:05.980 I mean, he was a picture of health. 00:46:05.980 --> 00:46:08.980 He'd get on me for eating lunch. 00:46:08.980 --> 00:46:12.980 He always worked through lunch, and he thought I should too. 00:46:12.980 --> 00:46:16.980 So I used to call him at supper. 00:46:16.980 --> 00:46:21.980 But Bill was spry. 00:46:21.980 --> 00:46:24.980 I don't think he had an ounce of fat on him. 00:46:24.980 --> 00:46:27.980 He was always in good shape. 00:46:27.980 --> 00:46:30.980 He exercised, but what many of us didn't know 00:46:30.980 --> 00:46:39.980 is that he had a physically enlarged heart 00:46:39.980 --> 00:46:43.980 for many years of his life. 00:46:43.980 --> 00:46:49.980 In fact, Bill was not expected to live past 21 years of age 00:46:49.980 --> 00:46:55.980 because of some physical difficulties in his childhood and his youth. 00:46:55.980 --> 00:47:00.980 He had high blood pressure, which we didn't know. 00:47:00.980 --> 00:47:05.980 But I'll tell you something we all knew, 00:47:05.980 --> 00:47:13.980 and that is that though the physically enlarged heart was a secret, 00:47:13.980 --> 00:47:24.980 as we reflect, we all know that Bill Brock had an enlarged heart. 00:47:24.980 --> 00:47:29.980 And I'd like to take this privilege that the family has given to me 00:47:29.980 --> 00:47:36.980 to challenge all of us on the man with the enlarged heart. 00:47:38.980 --> 00:47:43.980 The Word of God says that God told Japheth in Genesis 9, 27, 00:47:43.980 --> 00:47:47.980 that he would be enlarged as part of God's blessing. 00:47:47.980 --> 00:47:52.980 God told Israel in Exodus 34, 24, 00:47:52.980 --> 00:47:58.980 For I will cast out thy nations before thee and enlarge thy borders. 00:47:58.980 --> 00:48:01.980 In Isaiah 60, verse 5, 00:48:01.980 --> 00:48:06.980 Thine heart shall fear and be enlarged. 00:48:06.980 --> 00:48:13.980 At least twice it's been referenced by Tom, by Murrow, 00:48:13.980 --> 00:48:17.980 of Bill's preaching on the fear of the Lord. 00:48:17.980 --> 00:48:20.980 The last series he brought at Cedarville College, 00:48:20.980 --> 00:48:24.980 the last three-part series was on the fear of the Lord, 00:48:24.980 --> 00:48:27.980 just about 18 months ago. 00:48:27.980 --> 00:48:34.980 I am convinced that Bill Brock preached and lived in the fear of God 00:48:34.980 --> 00:48:36.980 because God gave him an enlarged heart, 00:48:36.980 --> 00:48:41.980 which resulted in an enlarged border of ministry 00:48:41.980 --> 00:48:44.980 and made him a blessing to every one of us. 00:48:46.980 --> 00:48:52.980 Bill Brock had an enlarged heart for churches, pastors, and pastor's wives. 00:48:52.980 --> 00:48:57.980 Bill Brock had an enlarged heart for churches, 00:48:57.980 --> 00:49:00.980 and he was under the ministry of M.R.D. Hahn early in his life. 00:49:00.980 --> 00:49:05.980 Did you ever stop to think about how much Bill reminded you of M.R.D. Hahn? 00:49:05.980 --> 00:49:12.980 They had somewhat the same personalities, if you knew M.R.D. Hahn at all. 00:49:12.980 --> 00:49:15.980 They preached in kind of the same way. 00:49:15.980 --> 00:49:19.980 In fact, Jeff told me, or Lynn perhaps it was this morning, 00:49:19.980 --> 00:49:23.980 that every Sunday morning for as long as they could remember, 00:49:23.980 --> 00:49:26.980 they had to listen to M.R.D. Hahn in the hall. 00:49:30.980 --> 00:49:36.980 Bill, coming up under the ministry of a man who had a heart for pastors and for churches, 00:49:36.980 --> 00:49:41.980 was used of God to build two churches in this city, 00:49:41.980 --> 00:49:45.980 the Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he pastored for 10 1⁄2 years, 00:49:45.980 --> 00:49:49.980 and this Maranatha Baptist for 16 years. 00:49:49.980 --> 00:49:52.980 And then out of that pastoral heart, he was the logical choice 00:49:52.980 --> 00:49:56.980 as the council selected him to be our state representative 00:49:56.980 --> 00:50:00.980 back some six or more years ago. 00:50:00.980 --> 00:50:04.980 And oh, how God used him. 00:50:04.980 --> 00:50:12.980 I was sitting up here and just trying to spot all of the pastors who are here from the state 00:50:12.980 --> 00:50:15.980 and the assistant pastors. 00:50:15.980 --> 00:50:22.980 In fact, I'd like to have the pastors and the assistant pastors from the state of Ohio 00:50:22.980 --> 00:50:25.980 and your wives to stand, if you would. 00:50:25.980 --> 00:50:26.980 Would you do that, please? 00:50:26.980 --> 00:50:34.980 This is a testimony, you may be seated, of these who've traveled, 00:50:34.980 --> 00:50:39.980 and there's some from out of state just to say how important 00:50:39.980 --> 00:50:43.980 Bill and you, Merle, have been to them. 00:50:45.980 --> 00:50:47.980 You're pastors, pastors, no doubt about it. 00:50:48.980 --> 00:50:51.980 When any of these fellas got in trouble, 00:50:51.980 --> 00:50:54.980 the one man they knew they could turn to was Bill Brock. 00:50:54.980 --> 00:51:00.980 He especially was a mentor to young pastors in this state. 00:51:00.980 --> 00:51:04.980 And to those churches where there was a time of struggling and problems. 00:51:04.980 --> 00:51:06.980 Bill loved problems. 00:51:06.980 --> 00:51:10.980 In fact, he just lit up when he heard that there was a problem. 00:51:11.980 --> 00:51:14.980 Whether it was at the college or Baptist admissions 00:51:14.980 --> 00:51:17.980 or whether it was in some of your churches 00:51:17.980 --> 00:51:19.980 or whether some of the kids had a problem. 00:51:19.980 --> 00:51:22.980 In fact, we were sitting in the office, some of the family, 00:51:22.980 --> 00:51:24.980 and talking this week, and if you had a problem 00:51:24.980 --> 00:51:27.980 and you didn't call Bill, he was upset with you 00:51:27.980 --> 00:51:29.980 because he wanted to be part of the solution. 00:51:31.980 --> 00:51:34.980 He sent out his bi-monthly publication to pastors 00:51:34.980 --> 00:51:38.980 and he entitled it appropriately, The Encourager. 00:51:41.980 --> 00:51:46.980 But some didn't know it was not unusual for Bill, in a quiet way, 00:51:46.980 --> 00:51:51.980 to reach into his pocket and to say to a young struggling pastor, 00:51:51.980 --> 00:51:54.980 I think you could use a new suit of clothes. 00:51:54.980 --> 00:51:56.980 Let me help you buy that suit. 00:51:57.980 --> 00:52:01.980 Only God knows all that he shared in a quiet way. 00:52:03.980 --> 00:52:05.980 With not only the men but the women in this state. 00:52:05.980 --> 00:52:09.980 When he planned those two-day pastors' conferences at Cedarville, 00:52:09.980 --> 00:52:12.980 that was all Bill Brock's idea. 00:52:12.980 --> 00:52:15.980 He said, now you be sure, when he would talk to Don Rickard, 00:52:15.980 --> 00:52:17.980 he would talk to Martin Clark, 00:52:17.980 --> 00:52:20.980 you be sure and have sessions for the wives. 00:52:21.980 --> 00:52:24.980 Because the same heart he had for you pastors, 00:52:24.980 --> 00:52:25.980 he had for you wives. 00:52:25.980 --> 00:52:30.980 So what's all this going to mean to us? 00:52:30.980 --> 00:52:34.980 We're just going to take it in, fellas, 00:52:34.980 --> 00:52:36.980 and say thank God for Bill Brock? 00:52:37.980 --> 00:52:43.980 Are we going to let his life be a challenge to every one of us 00:52:44.980 --> 00:52:48.980 to have a heart for the ministry of the local church, 00:52:48.980 --> 00:52:51.980 to those churches we already have, 00:52:51.980 --> 00:52:55.980 to strengthen them and to start new churches. 00:52:55.980 --> 00:52:58.980 And may I ask you this, since Bill Brock isn't around, 00:52:59.980 --> 00:53:00.980 who's going to meet your need? 00:53:00.980 --> 00:53:04.980 I'll tell you, you guys are going to have to meet each other's needs. 00:53:05.980 --> 00:53:08.980 There's going to have to be a new ministry of discipleship in this state, 00:53:09.980 --> 00:53:13.980 pastor to pastor, pastor's wives to pastor's wives. 00:53:13.980 --> 00:53:18.980 And may God help you men and you women and the rest, 00:53:19.980 --> 00:53:21.980 who will know of this service. 00:53:21.980 --> 00:53:26.980 May there be a great revival among the leaders in the state of Ohio, 00:53:26.980 --> 00:53:30.980 because God has taken Bill Brock out of our midst, 00:53:30.980 --> 00:53:34.980 and we want to carry on this ministry that God has given him and Merle. 00:53:35.980 --> 00:53:40.980 But he not only had a heart for pastors and churches and wives, 00:53:40.980 --> 00:53:43.980 he had a heart for the state of Ohio. 00:53:46.980 --> 00:53:49.980 I don't know if Bill Brock ever rooted for Michigan. 00:53:50.980 --> 00:53:52.980 I didn't think so. 00:53:53.980 --> 00:53:54.980 Praise God. 00:53:58.980 --> 00:54:01.980 Bill Brock was Ohio State through and through. 00:54:02.980 --> 00:54:07.980 All of his creativity and his energy in the ministry, 00:54:07.980 --> 00:54:09.980 the ministry he gave to this state. 00:54:10.980 --> 00:54:12.980 Very few men ever do that. 00:54:13.980 --> 00:54:15.980 But Bill Brock did. 00:54:16.980 --> 00:54:22.980 He had opportunities to go to other ministries. 00:54:23.980 --> 00:54:26.980 I had churches who would talk to me about Bill, 00:54:26.980 --> 00:54:27.980 and they liked to have Bill, 00:54:28.980 --> 00:54:30.980 but somehow as Bill worked through those opportunities 00:54:30.980 --> 00:54:32.980 and prayed about those opportunities, 00:54:32.980 --> 00:54:33.980 and prayed about those opportunities, 00:54:33.980 --> 00:54:35.980 he always stayed in Ohio. 00:54:39.980 --> 00:54:43.980 You ever stop to think about those who do this 00:54:44.980 --> 00:54:46.980 and the security they bring to the rest of us? 00:54:47.980 --> 00:54:51.980 Man, isn't it great to have had a Bill Brock around 00:54:51.980 --> 00:54:52.980 for all of these years? 00:54:53.980 --> 00:54:54.980 We always knew he was there. 00:54:54.980 --> 00:54:58.980 And what he meant to the state of Ohio. 00:55:01.980 --> 00:55:02.980 So what's the challenge? 00:55:03.980 --> 00:55:04.980 To us. 00:55:06.980 --> 00:55:09.980 From this man with an enlarged heart for the state of Ohio, 00:55:10.980 --> 00:55:11.980 the challenge is this. 00:55:12.980 --> 00:55:15.980 Bill Brock is no longer our crutch. 00:55:15.980 --> 00:55:21.980 We can't lean on him anymore. 00:55:22.980 --> 00:55:25.980 Now we have to pull together. 00:55:26.980 --> 00:55:29.980 And in this state of Ohio, 00:55:30.980 --> 00:55:32.980 we have to carry on what he started 00:55:33.980 --> 00:55:35.980 and go on to new heights for the glory of God 00:55:36.980 --> 00:55:38.980 as a state of association of churches. 00:55:38.980 --> 00:55:42.980 And I pray that as the council gets together 00:55:43.980 --> 00:55:45.980 and as you think about all the things that are coming, 00:55:46.980 --> 00:55:48.980 that this day of prayer that's coming up this fall 00:55:49.980 --> 00:55:51.980 will be the greatest day of prayer you've ever experienced in the state. 00:55:52.980 --> 00:55:56.980 At the state meeting that's coming in Columbus and Westerville 00:55:57.980 --> 00:55:58.980 in just a few months, 00:55:59.980 --> 00:56:01.980 that it will be the greatest state meeting that we've ever experienced. 00:56:02.980 --> 00:56:05.980 That will go on and as God sends another man in 00:56:05.980 --> 00:56:12.980 to be the state representative to build upon what Bill and Merle have started to the glory of God. 00:56:17.980 --> 00:56:21.980 Bill Brock had a heart for the general association of regular Baptist churches. 00:56:22.980 --> 00:56:24.980 He served as a member of the council of 18. 00:56:25.980 --> 00:56:27.980 He was on the Baptist Builders Club board. 00:56:28.980 --> 00:56:32.980 He counseled and prayed often with our national representative, Paul Tassel. 00:56:32.980 --> 00:56:37.980 He was always working to organize anything he could for the association. 00:56:38.980 --> 00:56:42.980 And he wanted this annual meeting this next June in Columbus 00:56:43.980 --> 00:56:47.980 to be the best attended, greatest meeting in the history of the GARP. 00:56:48.980 --> 00:56:49.980 He'd get on the phone, he'd say, 00:56:50.980 --> 00:56:53.980 Paul, I have 50 churches lined up 00:56:54.980 --> 00:56:59.980 that I want to bring busloads of people to the national conference every night. 00:56:59.980 --> 00:57:04.980 We're going to raise the money to pay for the expenses of the national conference 00:57:05.980 --> 00:57:07.980 before the thing ever gets started. 00:57:08.980 --> 00:57:10.980 I walked up to one of the council members last night, 00:57:11.980 --> 00:57:15.980 I said, by the way, who's the chairman of the national meeting in June? 00:57:16.980 --> 00:57:17.980 He said, guess. 00:57:18.980 --> 00:57:19.980 It was Bill Brock. 00:57:19.980 --> 00:57:20.980 Bill Brock. 00:57:20.980 --> 00:57:25.980 He was the spearhead behind everything that was going on. 00:57:26.980 --> 00:57:28.980 So what's our challenge? 00:57:31.980 --> 00:57:32.980 One of the challenges to me 00:57:34.980 --> 00:57:37.980 is that Bill Brock, as he viewed our association, 00:57:38.980 --> 00:57:41.980 listen closely, never had a narrow view of our association. 00:57:41.980 --> 00:57:47.980 He never thought we were the only ones who were serving God. 00:57:48.980 --> 00:57:50.980 He taught us praise the Lord. 00:57:50.980 --> 00:57:54.980 There are others out there who are standing for the same Bible 00:57:54.980 --> 00:57:57.980 and preaching the same Bible and building churches 00:57:58.980 --> 00:58:00.980 and doing missions and doing the work for God 00:58:01.980 --> 00:58:02.980 and praise the Lord for them too. 00:58:02.980 --> 00:58:08.980 May God give us that kind of balance and that kind of perception 00:58:09.980 --> 00:58:13.980 that I believe honors God as Bill's attitude honored God. 00:58:14.980 --> 00:58:17.980 The challenge to us is to continue to support 00:58:18.980 --> 00:58:20.980 through our finances and our energy and our prayers 00:58:21.980 --> 00:58:23.980 our national association. 00:58:24.980 --> 00:58:26.980 Bill had a large heart for missions. 00:58:26.980 --> 00:58:28.980 You've already heard from Ben. 00:58:29.980 --> 00:58:31.980 He served on the board of Baptist mid-missions, 00:58:32.980 --> 00:58:33.980 past chairman of the general council, 00:58:34.980 --> 00:58:36.980 presently chairman of the trustees, 00:58:37.980 --> 00:58:39.980 made trips to Brazil and to Central African Republic 00:58:40.980 --> 00:58:41.980 and Chad and Ghana. 00:58:44.980 --> 00:58:46.980 But his heart for missions went beyond that. 00:58:47.980 --> 00:58:49.980 Anything he could do to support missions, 00:58:50.980 --> 00:58:53.980 financially, encourage missions, pray for missions. 00:58:54.980 --> 00:58:55.980 Bill did that. 00:58:55.980 --> 00:58:58.980 Even as Ben said, if it meant driving a van 00:58:59.980 --> 00:59:01.980 to take a young missionary's furniture 00:59:02.980 --> 00:59:04.980 and deliver it across two states, 00:59:05.980 --> 00:59:06.980 he did it. 00:59:07.980 --> 00:59:09.980 What's the challenge to us? 00:59:11.980 --> 00:59:14.980 Men and women, not only pastors but lay people, 00:59:15.980 --> 00:59:18.980 we have to look beyond our own local church. 00:59:19.980 --> 00:59:21.980 We have to look beyond our own community. 00:59:21.980 --> 00:59:24.980 We have to look beyond our own state and our own nation. 00:59:25.980 --> 00:59:29.980 We've got to do the job of reaching a world for Christ. 00:59:30.980 --> 00:59:32.980 We're going to have to have more missionaries. 00:59:33.980 --> 00:59:39.980 We're going to lose 50% of our workforce out there in mission service to retirement 00:59:40.980 --> 00:59:43.980 or through coming home in the next 10 years. 00:59:43.980 --> 00:59:47.980 How many of you young people are willing to take Bill Brock's place? 00:59:47.980 --> 00:59:49.980 Have you been willing to say, 00:59:50.980 --> 00:59:51.980 Lord, here's my life. 00:59:52.980 --> 00:59:53.980 Use me any way you want me to. 00:59:54.980 --> 00:59:55.980 And maybe that's on the mission field. 00:59:56.980 --> 00:59:57.980 I see some boys and girls out there. 01:00:15.980 --> 01:00:19.980 You may be in business like Bill Brock was in business for 10 years 01:00:20.980 --> 01:00:21.980 before he stood behind a pulpit. 01:00:21.980 --> 01:00:22.980 I don't know what God has for you. 01:00:23.980 --> 01:00:25.980 All I'm saying is God wants your life. 01:00:26.980 --> 01:00:28.980 And we need those who are going to reach a world for Christ. 01:00:32.980 building 01:00:40.980 --> 01:00:42.980 and showed it to me and how thrilled he was with this gymnasium. 01:00:43.980 --> 01:00:48.980 He was recognized as one of the leaders in Christian education in our state. 01:00:48.980 --> 01:00:53.980 For 31 years he served as a trustee on the board of Cedarville College. 01:00:54.980 --> 01:00:56.980 You heard George Engelman testify, 01:00:57.980 --> 01:00:59.980 one of the most respected men on our board. 01:01:00.980 --> 01:01:03.980 We waited to see where Bill wanted to go 01:01:04.980 --> 01:01:05.980 and what he had to say. 01:01:07.980 --> skills, 01:01:41.980 --> 01:01:44.980 pastoral ability, spiritual discernment, 01:01:45.980 --> 01:01:46.980 combined with great vision, 01:01:47.980 --> 01:01:51.980 and a willingness to step out by faith and take risks for God. 01:01:52.980 --> 01:01:55.980 He used to often say to Dr. Jeremiah and to me, 01:01:55.980 --> 01:01:57.980 let me know how I can help you. 01:01:58.980 --> 01:02:01.980 If you need anything, just let me know. 01:02:04.980 --> 01:02:05.980 What's the challenge? 01:02:07.980 --> 01:02:13.980 The challenge is that Bill Brock saw the value of investing your life in young people. 01:02:13.980 --> 01:02:20.980 And really when it's all said and done, folk, when we've left this earth, 01:02:21.980 --> 01:02:30.980 if we can take our lives and pour them into young lives and be multiplied to the glory of God, 01:02:30.980 --> 01:02:32.980 we've lived a life worth living. 01:02:33.980 --> 01:02:34.980 What an investment. 01:02:35.980 --> 01:02:40.980 It's not how much money we have and how we invest our money as much as are we willing to invest our lives in you. 01:02:41.980 --> 01:02:43.980 May God help us. 01:02:43.980 --> 01:02:47.980 Bill Brock had an enlarged heart for others. 01:02:48.980 --> 01:02:50.980 He had a servant's heart. 01:02:51.980 --> 01:02:55.980 If you were to evaluate how Bill Brock spent his time, 01:02:56.980 --> 01:02:58.980 very little could have been found spent on self. 01:02:59.980 --> 01:03:02.980 Like our Lord, he was always looking how he might help somebody else. 01:03:03.980 --> 01:03:08.980 This unassuming, bright man who probably never told you, 01:03:08.980 --> 01:03:12.980 you know what he majored in at Calvin and Wheaton? 01:03:13.980 --> 01:03:14.980 Latin and Greek. 01:03:17.980 --> 01:03:19.980 When the boys told me that they started laughing, they said, 01:03:20.980 --> 01:03:21.980 we always knew he was a little different. 01:03:24.980 --> 01:03:26.980 I never knew anybody majored in Latin and Greek. 01:03:28.980 --> 01:03:29.980 Bill Brock did. 01:03:31.980 --> 01:03:36.980 Don't ever forget he was a very intelligent man. 01:03:36.980 --> 01:03:39.980 Yet he was organized. 01:03:39.980 --> 01:03:40.980 He was an administrator. 01:03:41.980 --> 01:03:42.980 He was business-like. 01:03:43.980 --> 01:03:45.980 He had a sense of humor, but he was a sensitive man. 01:03:46.980 --> 01:03:50.980 A genuine compassion for all with whom he came in contact. 01:03:51.980 --> 01:03:52.980 Did you know what he was doing the day he died? 01:03:55.980 --> 01:03:56.980 He mowed his lawn, 01:03:57.980 --> 01:04:01.980 and then he went over and mowed his neighbor's lawn. 01:04:01.980 --> 01:04:04.980 Then he came in and helped Merle mop the floors. 01:04:04.980 --> 01:04:05.980 Had a snack. 01:04:08.980 --> 01:04:09.980 Went to bed. 01:04:10.980 --> 01:04:11.980 And went to heaven. 01:04:12.980 --> 01:04:14.980 But the fact that he mowed his neighbor's lawn 01:04:15.980 --> 01:04:19.980 was so indicative of the heart of Bill Brock. 01:04:20.980 --> 01:04:21.980 The challenge? 01:04:21.980 --> 01:04:26.980 If ever we needed people in our churches with the servants hired, it's today. 01:04:27.980 --> 01:04:32.980 People who will not say, what will you do for me, but what can I do for you? 01:04:33.980 --> 01:04:41.980 May God give us that spirit from the life of his dear servant. 01:04:41.980 --> 01:04:45.980 More importantly, Bill Brock had an enlarged heart for his family. 01:04:46.980 --> 01:04:54.980 The investment of his life goes beyond the time spent at Emanuel Baptist, Maranatha Baptist, Baptist Mid-Mission, Cedarville College, 01:04:54.980 --> 01:04:58.980 and all the various organizations to which he gave hours and days and months. 01:04:58.980 --> 01:05:02.980 To that time he spent with those six children. 01:05:03.980 --> 01:05:08.980 To that time that he spent with those six grandchildren. 01:05:09.980 --> 01:05:15.980 And what we saw up here tonight is Ben Kendrick leaned over and said, 01:05:15.980 --> 01:05:19.980 Man, what a testimony to the grace of God. 01:05:20.980 --> 01:05:24.980 How many families do you know intact knowing the Lord and serving the Lord like that? 01:05:25.980 --> 01:05:29.980 Praise the Lord for this testimony by this family tonight. 01:05:30.980 --> 01:05:35.980 He had a heart for his mother, who's seated here in the front. 01:05:36.980 --> 01:05:38.980 In her 80s. 01:05:39.980 --> 01:05:42.980 And all how he loved his wife. 01:05:42.980 --> 01:05:51.980 I have never, never known Bill to be around. 01:05:52.980 --> 01:05:55.980 But what Merle wasn't close by. 01:05:58.980 --> 01:06:04.980 One of the things as I sat around the table with the administrators on Monday morning and we started talking about Bill, 01:06:04.980 --> 01:06:13.980 one of the men said, I never saw Bill Brock treat his wife with anything but dignity and respect. 01:06:18.980 --> 01:06:19.980 The challenge to us? 01:06:21.980 --> 01:06:22.980 Let's build families like that. 01:06:22.980 --> 01:06:37.980 People, no matter how we spend our lives, when it's all said and done, it's how we spend our time with our families and what God does to our families that's really going to matter for all eternity. 01:06:37.980 --> 01:06:44.980 May God give us the priority on the family as Bill had it. 01:06:45.980 --> 01:06:48.980 And most important of all, Bill Brock had a heart for God. 01:06:49.980 --> 01:06:55.980 This pastor Tim Kenoyer gave me this verse today, 2 Corinthians 4-7, when he spoke of Bill. 01:06:55.980 --> 01:07:02.980 We have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us. 01:07:02.980 --> 01:07:06.980 Truly, it was the treasure we saw in Bill. 01:07:07.980 --> 01:07:08.980 Never the earthen vessel. 01:07:09.980 --> 01:07:12.980 He lived his life concentrating on being God's man. 01:07:13.980 --> 01:07:14.980 A man of the word. 01:07:14.980 --> 01:07:23.980 Remember, the boy said, they couldn't find any white on the pages of his Bible. 01:07:27.980 --> 01:07:28.980 Marked his Bible all off. 01:07:31.980 --> 01:07:32.980 Had an interesting verse. 01:07:33.980 --> 01:07:35.980 Psalm 119, 32. 01:07:36.980 --> 01:07:42.980 I will run the way of thy commandment when thou shalt enlarge my heart. 01:07:45.980 --> 01:07:49.980 He loved the book and preached the book and lived the book with an enlarged heart. 01:07:50.980 --> 01:07:53.980 But the theme of his life, the concentration of his life was prayer. 01:07:54.980 --> 01:07:57.980 I said his major was Greek and Latin. 01:07:57.980 --> 01:07:58.980 I don't think so. 01:07:58.980 --> 01:08:01.980 I think his lifetime major was prayer. 01:08:03.980 --> 01:08:08.980 Out of all the men that I've called across this state, the people I've talked to just in the last three days, 01:08:08.980 --> 01:08:10.980 they all keep coming back to this fact. 01:08:11.980 --> 01:08:17.979 No man ever influenced me so much in my prayer life as Bill Brock. 01:08:19.979 --> 01:08:20.979 So the challenge. 01:08:23.979 --> 01:08:29.979 For us as believers, I listened to a tape this morning of Bill and he asked us, 01:08:29.979 --> 01:08:31.979 how's your prayer life? 01:08:32.979 --> 01:08:37.979 He said, you know, the average Christian prays less than five minutes a day. 01:08:38.979 --> 01:08:45.979 Oh, the challenge to us to get our prayer lives in order, to get our Bible study in order, 01:08:46.979 --> 01:08:52.979 to get our practical Christianity and obeying the word of God in order because of the life of this man. 01:08:52.979 --> 01:08:59.979 And then someday we too can hear like I am confident, Bill, 01:09:00.979 --> 01:09:02.979 well done thou good and faithful servant. 01:09:03.979 --> 01:09:07.979 You ever stop to think about how many people, servants of God, 01:09:10.979 --> 01:09:13.979 are blotting the landscape, 01:09:15.979 --> 01:09:18.979 moral catastrophes, 01:09:18.979 --> 01:09:27.979 and thank God for a Bill Brock who lived his life and leaves this earth without block. 01:09:28.979 --> 01:09:31.979 Praise God for such a model and example. 01:09:33.979 --> 01:09:35.979 May I talk to some of you tonight though? 01:09:35.979 --> 01:09:36.979 I've been talking to the believers. 01:09:37.979 --> 01:09:40.979 Some of you come in here tonight and you don't know Jesus Christ as your savior. 01:09:42.979 --> 01:09:46.979 In the providence of God you're in this service and it all goes back. 01:09:46.979 --> 01:09:50.979 It is not Bill Brock the man, it is Bill Brock the new man. 01:09:53.979 --> 01:09:55.979 Bill Brock was what he was by the grace of God. 01:09:56.979 --> 01:10:01.979 When Bill Brock repented of his sin and received Jesus Christ as his savior, he was born again. 01:10:02.979 --> 01:10:06.979 And you're here tonight and Christ died on the cross for you and arose from the dead. 01:10:06.979 --> 01:10:12.979 And if you would come to know the Lord because of the death of Bill Brock, 01:10:13.979 --> 01:10:18.979 I'll guarantee you not only would God be rejoicing in heaven and the angels, but Bill Brock would be too. 01:10:19.979 --> 01:10:23.979 And especially because some of you were on his prayer list. 01:10:23.979 --> 01:10:27.979 And Bill Brock had power in prayer. 01:10:28.979 --> 01:10:36.979 And I am still confident God is going to answer those prayers just like he did the prayers of George Mueller. 01:10:36.979 --> 01:10:40.979 Everyone George Mueller prayed for in his life got saved. 01:10:40.979 --> 01:10:44.979 Some of them after his death, but God still answered prayer. 01:10:44.979 --> 01:10:46.979 That's our prayer for you tonight. 01:10:50.979 --> 01:10:54.979 Sunday morning with that heavy heart and unbelieving heart, I got in my car. 01:10:54.979 --> 01:10:57.979 And drove from the house to the college. 01:10:57.979 --> 01:11:01.979 About eight o'clock to start calling the trustees and people. 01:11:02.979 --> 01:11:04.979 And did something I'd never done before. 01:11:04.979 --> 01:11:05.979 Talked to the Lord about something. 01:11:05.979 --> 01:11:07.979 I'll just tell you what I did. 01:11:07.979 --> 01:11:10.979 I said, Lord, I've never done this before. 01:11:11.979 --> 01:11:13.979 And I'm not sure you do this. 01:11:14.979 --> 01:11:19.979 But if you do, would you mind sending an angel to Bill Brock? 01:11:19.979 --> 01:11:21.979 Tell him, number one. 01:11:21.979 --> 01:11:27.979 If he didn't know how much I appreciated relocate about six weeks later. 01:14:09.979 --> 01:14:12.979 And I remember hearing the message. 01:14:12.979 --> 01:14:17.979 And then we were ushered into prayer rooms. 01:14:17.979 --> 01:14:20.979 I remember going into this one group. 01:14:20.979 --> 01:14:21.979 10, 12 men. 01:14:21.979 --> 01:14:22.979 And the door was shut. 01:14:22.979 --> 01:14:23.979 And I thought, 01:14:23.979 --> 01:14:25.979 Oh, it's a little bit like the ark. 01:14:25.979 --> 01:14:27.979 Now this is final. 01:14:27.979 --> 01:14:29.979 And then there was no pretense. 01:14:29.979 --> 01:14:31.979 There was no jibber jabber. 01:14:31.979 --> 01:14:32.979 You know how people tell, 01:14:32.979 --> 01:14:33.979 How's your dog today? 01:14:33.979 --> 01:14:35.979 Well, it got away and all that. 01:14:35.979 --> 01:14:36.979 None of that. 01:14:36.979 --> 01:14:38.979 Went right to prayer. 01:14:38.979 --> 01:14:41.979 And prayed for one solid half hour. 01:14:41.979 --> 01:14:42.979 And I thought, 01:14:42.979 --> 01:14:43.979 I thought, 01:14:43.979 --> 01:14:44.979 Oh, 01:14:44.979 --> 01:14:46.979 I must have gotten in with the deacons. 01:14:46.979 --> 01:14:49.979 And I thought, 01:14:49.979 --> 01:14:50.979 Well, 01:14:50.979 --> 01:14:51.979 And I'm a skeptic. 01:14:52.979 --> 01:14:54.979 My wife will tell you I've been blessed with 01:14:54.979 --> 01:14:56.979 Just a small amount of pessimism. 01:14:56.979 --> 01:14:57.979 I thought, 01:14:57.979 --> 01:14:58.979 I'll come next week and find out. 01:14:58.979 --> 01:15:00.979 I'll try 01:15:08.979 --> 01:15:10.979 They prayed for another half an hour. 01:15:10.979 --> 01:15:19.979 The family asked me this evening just to highlight, 01:15:19.979 --> 01:15:29.979 Just a touch on some of the prayer lessons that Pastor Brock taught you, taught me. 01:15:29.979 --> 01:15:34.979 I want us to look. 01:15:34.979 --> 01:15:41.979 At the statement that you find there in quotation marks, 01:15:41.979 --> 01:15:43.979 Lord, teach us to pray. 01:15:46.979 --> 01:15:47.979 You know the context of that. 01:15:47.979 --> 01:15:49.979 It's taken from Luke chapter 11 verse 1. 01:15:49.979 --> 01:15:54.979 And it tells us there in the text that after the disciples had been watching Jesus pray, 01:15:54.979 --> 01:15:59.979 That something in his prayer life stimulated one of them to come to him and ask that question. 01:16:01.979 --> 01:16:03.979 And as I studied and meditated upon this, 01:16:03.979 --> 01:16:04.979 I began to ask myself, 01:16:04.979 --> 01:16:06.979 What other things did the disciples ask for? 01:16:07.979 --> 01:16:10.979 I find no other place that they ask him to teach them anything. 01:16:10.979 --> 01:16:12.979 Now we know very well that they spent, 01:16:12.979 --> 01:16:14.979 He spent three years teaching his disciples. 01:16:16.979 --> 01:16:18.979 But as I looked through the passages, 01:16:18.979 --> 01:16:21.979 I found that on one occasion the disciples asked, 01:16:21.979 --> 01:16:23.979 Lord grant us a request. 01:16:23.979 --> 01:16:25.979 Selfishly, 01:16:25.979 --> 01:16:27.979 That we may sit on your right hand and on your left. 01:16:27.979 --> 01:16:31.979 They were interested in their personal issues. 01:16:33.979 --> 01:16:38.979 Elsewhere in scripture we find that the disciples on one occasion in the midst of a storm cried out, 01:16:38.979 --> 01:16:39.979 Lord save us. 01:16:41.979 --> 01:16:48.979 But nowhere do we find that ever did they ask what they did in relationship to prayer. 01:16:48.979 --> 01:16:50.979 Lord teach us. 01:16:50.979 --> 01:16:52.979 What? 01:16:52.979 --> 01:16:53.979 One thing. 01:16:53.979 --> 01:16:54.979 To pray. 01:16:54.979 --> 01:17:00.979 The passages are taken directly from scripture. 01:17:00.979 --> 01:17:06.979 And I want to highlight two of them this evening for you. 01:17:06.979 --> 01:17:10.979 We'll begin with the first one. 01:17:10.979 --> 01:17:17.979 I believe it's a very precious encouragement and commandment to us to pray for a very particular thing of hope. 01:17:20.979 --> 01:17:24.979 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. 01:17:24.979 --> 01:17:28.979 This evening as you consider the issue of a commandment. 01:17:28.979 --> 01:17:32.979 Something that our Lord commands you and commands me to pray about. 01:17:32.979 --> 01:17:37.979 I want you to concentrate just for a moment upon what that passage says to us. 01:17:37.979 --> 01:17:44.979 And how it ought to impact upon our very lives and daily communion. 01:17:44.979 --> 01:17:51.979 Praying for the peace of Jerusalem centers in upon not simply the city itself. 01:17:51.979 --> 01:17:54.979 But the king of peace. 01:17:54.979 --> 01:17:56.979 And his coming. 01:17:56.979 --> 01:18:04.979 It's interesting to see how often through the scriptures reference to the Lord's coming stand out. 01:18:04.979 --> 01:18:11.979 I remember in the days that have quickly flown since Sunday morning. 01:18:11.979 --> 01:18:14.979 Hearing on two different occasions. 01:18:14.979 --> 01:18:15.979 Maybe three. 01:18:15.979 --> 01:18:18.979 The family referred to dad. 01:18:18.979 --> 01:18:20.979 Husband preaching. 01:18:20.979 --> 01:18:21.979 Not too long ago. 01:18:21.979 --> 01:18:23.979 On the coming of the Lord. 01:18:23.979 --> 01:18:26.979 And how that ought to impact upon our lives. 01:18:26.979 --> 01:18:31.979 As you think this evening on things that you ought to be praying about. 01:18:33.979 --> 01:18:37.979 I trust that one of the things that your heart cries out and rejoices in praying about. 01:18:37.979 --> 01:18:38.979 Is the Lord's coming. 01:18:38.979 --> 01:18:40.979 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. 01:18:40.979 --> 01:18:42.979 When the king of peace. 01:18:42.979 --> 01:18:44.979 Is on the throne. 01:18:44.979 --> 01:18:45.979 And in control. 01:18:46.979 --> 01:18:48.979 It's interesting as you look at scripture. 01:18:48.979 --> 01:18:51.979 You turn there in Revelation chapter 22 verse 10. 01:18:51.979 --> 01:18:53.979 And let's flip over there just for a moment. 01:18:56.979 --> 01:19:09.979 The very book that we treasure closes. 01:19:09.979 --> 01:19:11.979 With a prayer. 01:19:11.979 --> 01:19:16.979 He who testifies these things say it surely I come quickly. 01:19:16.979 --> 01:19:17.979 Amen. 01:19:17.979 --> 01:19:19.979 Even so. 01:19:19.979 --> 01:19:20.979 Come. 01:19:20.979 --> 01:19:22.979 Lord Jesus. 01:19:22.979 --> 01:19:25.979 As you go out of here tonight. 01:19:25.979 --> 01:19:28.979 I hope one of the things you pray for is his coming. 01:19:28.979 --> 01:19:38.979 Scripture tells us that we ought to comfort one another. 01:19:38.979 --> 01:19:40.979 With that fact. 01:19:40.979 --> 01:19:43.979 In first John chapter 3 verse 3. 01:19:43.979 --> 01:19:46.979 It says he who hath this hope in him. 01:19:46.979 --> 01:19:51.979 And it refers to seeing him face to face. 01:19:51.979 --> 01:19:53.979 And how that hope has an impact. 01:19:53.979 --> 01:19:55.979 Upon the life of the believer. 01:19:57.979 --> 01:20:01.979 This evening I trust that one of the things that consumes your prayer life. 01:20:01.979 --> 01:20:02.979 Is the coming of the Lord. 01:20:02.979 --> 01:20:03.979 Even so. 01:20:04.979 --> 01:20:05.979 Come. 01:20:05.979 --> 01:20:06.979 Lord Jesus. 01:20:07.979 --> 01:20:11.979 There is another prayer command that I would like to highlight just for a moment. 01:20:11.979 --> 01:20:14.979 And look down there if you will to the ninth commandment. 01:20:14.979 --> 01:20:16.979 The ninth command rather. 01:20:16.979 --> 01:20:18.979 Pray for the unsaved. 01:20:18.979 --> 01:20:24.979 In the sight of God our savior who will have all men to be saved. 01:20:24.979 --> 01:20:27.979 The passage is taken from first Timothy chapter 2 verse 4. 01:20:27.979 --> 01:20:28.979 And let's turn to that. 01:20:30.979 --> 01:20:33.979 Paul as he was directing his beloved son in the faith. 01:20:33.979 --> 01:20:35.979 And encouraging him in his ministry. 01:20:38.979 --> 01:20:40.979 Makes a statement there in verse 1. 01:20:40.979 -->
