We're going through 1 John chapter 3. 00:00:33.399 --> 00:00:38.240 And John's been saying a lot of stuff. His main point is that he really wants people to know God, right? 00:00:38.340 --> 00:00:44.299 Know God, not just know about him, but actually know him. And when you know him, it affects the way you live. It can't not. 00:00:44.600 --> 00:00:53.100 It affects you on a moral level. It affects you on a social level. When you confess your sins, you have fellowship with one another and you love one another. 00:00:53.100 --> 00:00:57.079 And why? Because you know the truth. You know the truth about who you are. 00:00:57.640 --> 00:01:05.120 Last week for Chinese New Year, we went through 1 John chapter 2, verses 18 onwards. 00:01:05.240 --> 00:01:13.700 And he's warning them about the Antichrist. And I talked about maybe some of the things that we've allowed culture to speak into the church. 00:01:13.840 --> 00:01:18.920 And maybe those are sort of the Antichrists that we have. And maybe faith is one of them for us, Chinese people. 00:01:18.920 --> 00:01:26.040 Or maybe fortune is another one. And then whilst he's been warning us about the Antichrist, he then takes a bit of a stop. 00:01:26.140 --> 00:01:30.840 And then he kind of has this little bit of an emotional outburst. And that's where we're picking up here. 00:01:30.879 --> 00:01:39.560 And we're going to focus on this really short few verses here and the theme of it, which is the children of God, that we are children of God. 00:01:39.560 --> 00:01:47.219 Recently, I was asked to share at a high school retreat on one of the hot topics of the day, which is sexuality. 00:01:47.900 --> 00:01:59.120 And as I was really pondering over what I wanted to share with these high school kids, the thing that really came up for me was that anytime we're talking about this issue of sexuality, 00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:07.939 it seems to be so tied in to the topic of identity and what your sexuality is becomes your prime identity. 00:02:08.080 --> 00:02:15.080 But my point is, but actually, no, your sexuality is something that's very important about you, but it's not the most important thing. 00:02:15.159 --> 00:02:18.640 It's not the first thing that you need to say after introducing your name. 00:02:20.120 --> 00:02:23.080 Your main identity, of course, is that you are a child of God. 00:02:23.080 --> 00:02:34.880 And how many of us let us really let those kind of things really seep into who we are, whether it's sexuality, whether it's social class, whether it's job, whether it's political affiliation. 00:02:35.100 --> 00:02:43.860 These things end up being the things that we identify with as the most, when actually our main identity is that we are children of God. 00:02:43.860 --> 00:02:49.520 And as the elder John here is warning them about the Antichrist, he then takes a pause. 00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:52.820 And in 1 John 3, verse 1, he goes, 00:02:53.280 --> 00:02:58.939 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God, and so we are. 00:02:59.680 --> 00:03:02.960 The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 00:03:03.460 --> 00:03:14.000 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared, but we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:29.120 So he suddenly takes this moment and stops and just goes, Man, I want you to pause, I want you to stop what you're doing, I want you to look at the kind of love that the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God. 00:03:29.120 --> 00:03:34.099 What do you feel, what do you think when I tell you that you're a child of God? 00:03:35.319 --> 00:03:46.060 You know, Romans 8 talks about all creation is eagerly longing for the revealing of the sons of God or the children of God, where all of us really step up and step into the identity that we truly have. 00:03:46.520 --> 00:03:48.640 And I asked us a few things here. 00:03:48.920 --> 00:03:55.140 When we're thinking about what it means to be a child of God, do we first of all realize that actually, we did nothing to become children of God? 00:03:55.139 --> 00:03:57.399 Just like a baby does nothing to enter into our family. 00:03:57.859 --> 00:04:07.199 Many of you know that Christina is about to give birth in a few weeks, and when baby MJ arrives, he's a boy, and he's going to be called MJ, he will have done nothing to earn his right to become into this family. 00:04:07.279 --> 00:04:10.679 He will just be part of this family, mostly because of what his parents did. 00:04:11.539 --> 00:04:11.759 Same. 00:04:11.879 --> 00:04:15.619 So as children of God, as we're born into this family, we really did nothing. 00:04:15.759 --> 00:04:16.439 God did everything. 00:04:16.620 --> 00:04:17.839 God was the one who took the initiative. 00:04:18.120 --> 00:04:20.839 God was the one who welcomed us into his family. 00:04:21.219 --> 00:04:22.939 God was the one that adopted us. 00:04:22.939 --> 00:04:25.519 And second is, babies aren't supposed to stay babies. 00:04:25.639 --> 00:04:26.399 They're supposed to grow. 00:04:26.980 --> 00:04:35.079 The whole point is not just that you become a child of God so that you can get into heaven, but that you would grow into maturity, that you would become more and more like him. 00:04:35.319 --> 00:04:38.379 And I say really three quick points here when we're looking at this. 00:04:38.439 --> 00:04:40.360 And the first is this, see. 00:04:40.899 --> 00:04:42.659 See the type of love that God has. 00:04:42.839 --> 00:04:44.079 Second is be. 00:04:44.579 --> 00:04:45.819 So first is see. 00:04:46.100 --> 00:04:47.060 The second is be. 00:04:47.159 --> 00:04:48.779 How does that impact the way you live? 00:08:01.159 --> 00:08:01.819 It's shocking. 00:08:02.259 --> 00:08:05.699 We were rebels that were made children of God. 00:08:05.699 --> 00:08:08.360 John 1 verse 2 says, 00:08:08.360 --> 00:08:13.039 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 00:08:13.180 --> 00:08:17.719 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 00:08:18.120 --> 00:08:22.699 We have received the spirit of adoption, and now we are children of God. 00:08:22.699 --> 00:08:29.459 But here's where I stop and kind of go, well, actually, is there anything culturally here that we need to be aware of? 00:08:30.699 --> 00:08:37.539 Because when we think children of God, it's not even necessarily given that it's a happy, good thing, right? 00:08:38.019 --> 00:08:43.639 So many of us have our own experiences with our parents that are negative, traumatizing even. 00:08:44.340 --> 00:08:49.120 So when you're told that you are a child of God, what does that even make you feel? 00:08:49.319 --> 00:08:52.679 How does that even make you feel, and what are you even thinking? 00:08:52.919 --> 00:09:00.100 So often our own experience with our own parents really affects our perspective and our approach to God. 00:09:00.799 --> 00:09:04.100 For example, if you don't have a great relationship with your parents or your father, 00:09:04.679 --> 00:09:09.159 maybe your father is a stereotypical Chinese father who never really spoke to you. 00:09:10.120 --> 00:09:13.080 How does that impact the way you approach Father God? 00:09:13.080 --> 00:09:16.620 So when you're told that you're a child of God, you don't really truly know what it means, 00:09:16.680 --> 00:09:22.420 because you don't really have those kind of experiences to be able to help support you, 00:09:22.940 --> 00:09:26.400 in terms of understanding what it means to be a child of God. 00:09:26.920 --> 00:09:32.000 So my question really here is, has your own experience with your parents affected you 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:35.520 and your relationship with your father in heaven?
