we're young, we have huge expectation and huge dreams and ambitions and hopes. 00:02:40.420 --> 00:02:47.599 And many of us, we look forward to our lives and we think of all that we might do and all the things we'd love to achieve and all the things we'd love to have. 00:02:50.300 --> 00:02:57.460 But one of the problems of growing older is learning to cope with the disappointment when those This is the account of, and then you get a family line. 00:03:38.899 --> 00:03:43.139 The first one is, back in Genesis 2, this is the account of the heavens and the earth. 00:03:44.079 --> 00:03:49.039 And Genesis is based on these accounts of different stories, different families. 00:03:49.039 --> 00:03:52.599 And you go from Adam and to Noah and to Abraham. 00:03:52.699 --> character of the book of Genesis. 00:04:03.479 --> 00:04:10.259 Which is odd, because most of Genesis 37 to 45 is about Joseph, not Jacob. 00:04:10.899 --> 00:04:13.799 But you've got to remember, actually, it's not about Joseph. 00:04:13.799 --> 00:04:15.099 It's all about Jacob. 00:04:15.759 --> 00:04:17.680 It's about God's promises to Jacob. 00:04:17.779 --> 00:04:20.079 So let's just think of Jacob for a second. 00:04:21.240 --> 00:04:24.959 Jacob, when he was a young man, was dubious. 00:04:25.980 --> 00:04:27.060 He was a trickster. 00:04:27.560 --> 00:04:28.459 He was a liar. 00:04:28.560 --> 00:04:29.300 He was a deceiver. 00:04:29.300 --> 00:04:34.120 He stole the blessing from his older brother. 00:04:34.840 --> 00:04:36.600 He deceived his father. 00:04:38.240 --> 00:04:42.420 Jacob was a, he liked to make things happen. 00:04:46.600 --> 00:04:53.100 And Jacob, all the time, was trying to get the blessing, the blessing that God had promised to Abraham and to Isaac. 00:04:53.560 --> 00:04:55.920 Jacob was trying to get that blessing for himself. 00:04:55.920 --> 00:05:01.780 Now, alongside that, God also made promises to Jacob that it would be him. later on, he says very similar things as he experiences the sorrow of all that's happened. 00:06:32.319 --> 00:06:43.139 And he says to the brothers, when they go back down to Egypt to get food, he 00:08:47.019 And while they're in Egypt, they meet Joseph. 00:08:47.079 --> 00:08:48.039 Joseph's not dead. 00:08:48.279 --> 00:08:50.459 He's been raised up. 00:08:52.819 --> 00:08:53.759 So this is 00:09:04.979 They told him, Joseph is still alive. 00:09:05.259 --> 00:09:08.219 In fact, he is the ruler of all Egypt. 00:09:09.779 --> 00:09:10.919 Jacob was stunned. 00:09:11.479 --> 00:09:12.500 He did not believe them. 00:09:12.500 --> 00:09:22.080 But when they told him everything Joseph had said to them, when he saw the carts Joseph had sent to carry him back, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. 00:09:22.659 --> 00:09:26.080 And Israel said, I'm convinced my son Joseph is still alive. 00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:28.360 I will go and see him before I die. 00:09:30.840 --> 00:09:36.159 Jacob has lived for 20 years, 25, however long, a long time. 00:09:36.159 --> 00:09:42.919 Jacob has lived with this painful reality that his favorite precious son Joseph is dead. in the original, apparently it literally means his heart stopped. 00:10:22.719 --> 00:10:23.759 His heart stopped. 00:10:23.759 --> 00:10:27.819 It's as if he sort of dies. 00:10:30.019 --> 00:10:33.480 He can't believe the message that he's being told. 00:10:33.759 --> 00:10:37.539 He can't believe that his son who was dead is alive again. 00:10:38.179 --> 00:10:39.259 He can't understand it. 00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:43.879 And the brothers give Jacob the evidence. 00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:46.980 They tell him the things that Joseph had said. 00:10:47.439 --> 00:10:48.980 And they show him the carts. 00:10:48.980 --> 00:10:52.120 They bought all these carts from Egypt with good things on them. 00:10:53.759 --> 00:10:56.039 And then you get this beautiful phrase. 00:10:56.620 --> 00:11:00.819 When he saw these things, the spirit of their father, Jacob, revived. 00:11:01.899 --> 00:11:09.539 So the one whose heart stopped is now revived by the news of a resurrection. 00:11:11.419 --> 00:11:14.460 This is what turns Jacob's world around. 00:11:15.720 --> 00:11:18.419 It's a message he can hardly dare to believe. 00:11:20.039 --> 00:11:22.840 And yet this is the reality he's now confronted with. 00:11:22.840 --> 00:11:26.899 And he says, Israel is Jacob, by the way, the same person. 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:30.800 I'm convinced my son Joseph is still alive. 00:11:30.940 --> 00:11:32.340 I will go and see him before I die. 00:11:35.200 --> 00:11:41.800 Now, I don't think it takes a genius to realize that this has parallels to the news of another resurrection. 00:11:41.799 --> 00:11:47.759 Another resurrection that was proclaimed on the first Easter Sunday morning. 00:11:48.019 --> 00:11:52.120 While it was still dark, the women went to the tomb and they saw the stone had been rolled away. 00:11:52.219 --> 00:11:54.839 And going in, they saw that the body was not there. 00:11:54.840 --> 00:12:02.220 And they came to the first disciples and they said, he's alive. 00:12:03.080 --> 00:12:04.740 And the disciples couldn't believe that. 00:12:04.740 --> 00:12:10.539 You see, to believe in resurrection in a world of death is so disappointment in life is because everything heads towards death. 00:12:59.939 --> 00:13:04.539 And what turns everything around is when you are confronted with news of a resurrection. 00:13:05.559 --> 00:13:07.399 A resurrected son. 00:13:08.719 --> 00:13:13.059 A favored son who was dead and now is alive again. 00:13:15.139 --> 00:13:21.439 The message of resurrection, the message that Jesus rose from the dead, 00:13:21.559 --> 00:13:23.899 is our gospel. 00:13:23.899 --> 00:13:24.139 He's alive. 00:13:24.139 --> 00:13:26.500 He's alive. 00:13:26.500 --> 00:13:34.419 And because Jesus went from death to life, that changes everything. 00:13:34.419 --> 00:13:40.539 We're so used to living in a world that goes from life to death, life to death. 00:13:40.679 --> 00:13:46.159 But Jesus turns it around, reverses the curse and goes from death to life. 00:13:46.159 --> 00:13:55.179 And if you can understand the fact that Jesus is raised from the dead, it will begin to revive your soul. 00:13:55.179 --> 00:13:59.419 In a world of disappointment, it is the resurrection that will give you hope. 00:13:59.419 --> 00:14:04.879 And the danger is that what we do when we're faced with disappointment is we look for something else. 00:14:04.959 --> 00:14:06.339 We say, well, perhaps this will give me hope. 00:14:06.479 --> 00:14:11.240 But it will just lead to further disappointment because you're putting your hope in something that's still dying. 00:14:11.659 --> 00:14:13.199 Everything in our world is dying. 00:14:13.200 --> 00:14:16.800 And if you hope in dying things, then you will be disappointed. 00:14:17.340 --> 00:14:23.259 But if you can hope in the living one, then you will have a hope that lasts forever. 00:14:26.920 --> 00:14:31.900 So where we find ourselves disappointed, we need to hear the news of the resurrected son. 00:14:32.100 --> 00:14:33.640 We need to remind ourselves again. 00:14:33.740 --> 00:14:39.460 We need to hear again that the tomb was that takes Jacob from a place of disappointment to joy. 00:15:05.500 --> 00:15:07.780 The second thing is rekindled worship. 00:15:08.560 --> 00:15:11.800 Look what he does as he sets out in chapter 46, verse 1. 00:15:11.799 --> 00:15:14.639 So Israel, that's Jacob, set out with all that was his. 00:15:14.919 --> 00:15:19.759 And when he reached Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac. 00:15:20.719 --> 00:15:22.919 He offered sacrifices. 00:15:23.719 --> 00:15:24.879 He worshipped. 00:15:24.879 --> 00:15:35.919 One of the striking things is that ever since Joseph was sold into Egypt and the betrayal, there's no evidence that Jacob worshipped. 00:15:36.000 --> 00:15:38.139 There's no evidence that Jacob offered any sacrifices. 00:15:38.139 --> 00:15:43.299 And yet here he is, back in the place of worship. 00:15:45.120 --> 00:15:47.500 And notice he's back in Beersheba. 00:15:47.679 --> 00:15:50.120 This is where his father Isaac had worshipped. 00:15:50.319 --> 00:15:55.759 And so he's reconnecting, he's rekindling a worship that goes back through the generations. 00:15:55.759 --> 00:16:02.840 Beersheba is the very southernmost point of Israel. 00:16:03.159 --> 00:16:08.899 This is as he makes his journey down to Egypt to go and visit Joseph in Egypt. 00:16:09.039 --> 00:16:11.019 He's about to leave the promised land. 00:16:11.279 --> 00:16:14.580 This is the point at which he leaves the promised land of Canaan. 00:16:14.799 --> 00:16:17.139 And so he offers this act of worship. 00:16:17.139 --> 00:16:29.399 And I want to say to us, in our disappointment and in our struggle and in our confusion, in our pain, is it possible that we forget to worship? 00:16:29.600 --> 00:16:39.559 Is it possible that we forget to lift our eyes and our hearts to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of the generations, the God who's been faithful through countless generations? 00:16:41.580 --> 00:16:46.360 Some of you have grown up in homes where God has been worshipped. 00:16:47.139 --> 00:16:50.379 Some of you have generations of worship in your families. 00:16:53.500 --> 00:16:59.240 We need to remember that we're not isolated individuals who are trying to do our little bit of worship here on our own. 00:16:59.240 --> 00:17:03.259 We're connected to a great long story, a great history of worshippers. 00:17:05.099 --> 00:17:05.619 Abraham. 00:17:05.859 --> 00:17:08.039 You worship the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 00:17:10.740 --> 00:17:15.680 And yet how quickly we become consumed with the things that are happening around us. 00:17:15.680 --> 00:17:19.320 How quickly we lose sight of the God who truly is above. 00:17:21.460 --> 00:17:26.539 So I wonder today whether God is saying to you, will you worship is rekindled, I want you to notice that it's in that moment that God speaks. 00:18:16.300 --> 00:18:20.200 God has not spoken through the entire narrative of Joseph. 00:18:21.480 --> 00:18:27.200 God has not spoken audibly in this way to any of the brothers, to anything that's happened. 00:18:27.200 --> 00:18:33.360 But it's at this moment, when Jacob is at this crisis point, that
