the time is near. 00:05:23.899 --> 00:05:38.479 This morning what I want to show you from these three verses is that you, Christian, you, servant of the living God, you need this book. 00:05:39.519 study of the book of Revelation by saying you need its unique, even weird writing. 00:06:23.899 --> 00:06:29.099 Notice in verse one, it starts with the revelation of Jesus Christ. 00:06:29.299 --> 00:06:34.399 And the book of Revelation takes its name from those first two words. 00:06:35.500 --> 00:06:37.599 The revelation of Jesus Christ. 00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:43.579 Literally, it's the apocalypse of Jesus Christ. 00:06:43.579 --> 00:06:51.439 Now, most of us, when we hear the word apocalypse or apocalyptic, we start thinking in terms of cataclysmic destruction. 00:06:52.339 --> 00:06:55.639 Recently, there was a bus crash down in Mexico, very tragic. 00:06:55.639 --> 00:07:03.719 And one of the persons who survived it when he was coming out of the bus and saw just the mass devastation. 00:07:03.959 --> 00:07:06.819 He described it by saying it was apocalyptic. 00:07:06.819 --> 00:07:12.439 And what he was saying was, it's devastating. 00:07:12.439 --> 00:07:24.139 But when we come to Revelation 1.1, we don't read the mass devastation of Jesus Christ. 00:07:25.740 --> 00:07:27.220 It's the apocalypse. 00:07:28.160 --> 00:07:30.100 The revelation of Jesus. to fix it up. 00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:23.120 And as they're fixing it up, this couple can't see it. 00:08:23.120 --> 00:08:27.840 And so weeks and months go by as they're fixing up this house. Revelation is not the only apocalyptic book in our Bible or kind of portion of book. 00:09:46.120 --> 00:09:48.000 Daniel, Ezekiel, Zechariah. 00:09:48.319 --> 00:09:50.939 They all have apocalyptic sections too. 00:09:51.980 --> 00:09:59.419 And what's unique about apocalyptic literature is that it unveils the reality of things unseen with very vivid images. 00:09:59.419 --> 00:10:00.419 Unusual symbols. 00:10:00.419 --> 00:10:01.419 Unusual symbols. 00:10:01.419 --> 00:10:01.979 Unusual symbols. 00:10:02.419 --> 00:10:03.679 Cryptic numbers. 00:10:04.059 --> 00:10:08.599 And oftentimes, that can make the average everyday Joe very uncomfortable. 00:10:10.259 --> 00:10:12.240 Even fearful. 00:10:14.500 --> 00:10:16.039 So you avoid it. 00:10:16.039 --> 00:10:20.500 Well, God has apocalyptic literature. 00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:23.019 He has this in our Bibles. 00:10:23.179 --> 00:10:24.480 It's not a mistake. 00:10:25.399 --> 00:10:31.839 He uses it to communicate profound truths through very vivid pictures. 00:10:32.539 --> 00:10:36.459 Here's what you need to know about apocalyptic literature and about the book of Revelation. 00:10:36.460 --> 00:10:39.740 Revelation, God wants you to show you something. 00:10:40.220 --> 00:10:41.759 He wants you to see something. 00:10:42.180 --> 00:10:46.540 And the way that you're going to see it is by hearing it, by reading it. 00:10:46.879 One of the things that we're going to see over and over again in the book of Revelation is John saying, I saw this. 00:11:14.839 --> 00:11:15.859 I saw it. 00:11:17.259 --> 00:11:17.739 Behold. 00:11:18.579 --> 00:11:18.899 See. 00:11:19.659 --> 00:11:20.459 I witnessed. 00:11:22.459 --> 00:11:25.459 There's something that God has for us to see. 00:11:28.679 --> 00:11:36.319 And then when you come to a passage like Revelation 12 and there's this woman on a beast, you're kind of like, what do I see? 00:11:36.620 --> 00:11:37.639 What is this? 00:11:39.159 --> 00:11:40.339 What am I seeing? 00:11:40.759 --> 00:11:43.279 What are these images and numbers referred to? 00:11:44.139 --> 00:11:51.799 Well, all of a sudden you feel like you need a degree in eschatology to even open up the book of Revelation and you don't. 00:11:51.799 --> 00:11:58.199 There's a story of a bunch of seminary students who are playing basketball at a church gym. 00:11:58.620 --> 00:12:01.679 The janitor had opened up the gym to them at no cost. 00:12:01.799 --> 00:12:07.279 And while these seminary students are playing basketball, the janitor had his Bible open. 00:12:08.079 --> 00:12:09.439 And he's reading the book of Revelation. 00:12:10.139 --> 00:12:14.819 One of the seminary students picks up on it and says, what are you reading? 00:12:15.300 --> 00:12:16.800 Janitor, well, the book of Revelation. 00:12:17.220 --> 00:12:22.400 The student was kind of like, well, I just took my ST607 class and you know what? 00:12:22.700 --> 00:12:27.260 My seminary prof still doesn't understand what the book of Revelation is about and neither do I. 00:12:27.260 --> 00:12:29.379 How are you making sense of it? 00:12:30.920 --> 00:12:33.200 And that janitor just said very simply, you know what? 00:12:34.360 --> 00:12:37.940 Revelation is all about Jesus winning in the end. 00:12:39.180 --> 00:12:40.320 That's what it's about. 00:12:40.320 --> 00:12:48.960 You don't need a degree to understand with confidence what the book of Revelation is revealing. 00:12:51.420 --> 00:12:55.360 Even its images, even its symbols, even its numbers. 00:12:56.900 --> 00:13:01.920 And so let me tell you real quick how we're going to navigate some of these things so that you have a sense of confidence moving forward. 00:13:01.919 --> 00:13:12.059 When we approach the book of Revelation, we're going to have three things in our interpretive kind of pocket that we're going to use in order to make sense of all this stuff. 00:13:12.259 --> 00:13:13.179 First is this. 00:13:14.240 --> 00:13:22.759 We're going to be looking for explanations of these symbols and of these kind of interesting creatures from within the text itself. 00:13:23.599 --> 00:13:24.539 So take a look at it with me. 00:13:24.539 --> 00:13:31.159 If you open up to chapter 1 and you're looking at verse 12, we read, this is John seeing a vision. 00:13:31.339 --> 00:13:33.379 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me. 00:13:33.759 --> 00:13:36.620 And on turning, I saw seven golden lampstands. 00:13:36.679 --> 00:13:39.039 In the midst of the lampstands, one like a son of man. 00:13:39.240 --> 00:13:43.980 And if you're reading that, you start asking the question, seven lampstands, what is that all about? 00:13:44.219 --> 00:13:45.839 And then he'd go on to verse 16. 00:13:46.139 --> 00:13:48.419 In his right hand, he held seven stars. 00:13:48.699 --> 00:13:50.980 And you're like, seven lampstands, seven stars? 00:13:51.159 --> 00:13:52.259 What is all that about? 00:13:52.259 --> 00:13:53.759 I think I want to go home now. 00:13:55.259 --> 00:14:03.000 Now, if you just kind of hang on in there and you go down to verse 20, Jesus, the risen Christ, is speaking. 00:14:03.539 --> 00:14:10.419 And he says, as for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and the seven golden lampstands, 00:14:10.519 --> 00:14:15.519 the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. 00:14:16.519 --> 00:14:18.539 He tells us what it means. 00:14:18.539 --> 00:14:24.639 That's one way we're going to understand some of the symbols and numbers from the book of Revelation. 00:14:24.819 --> 00:14:25.980 It's right there in the text. 00:14:26.719 --> 00:14:28.679 We're going to have angels helping us out. 00:14:28.679 --> 00:14:32.799 The other way, the second way, is this. 00:14:35.039 --> 00:14:38.679 The Old Testament is our ally. 00:14:38.679 --> 00:14:51.679 Much of the symbolism and numbers and images that we find in the book of Revelation, they are tethered to something back in the Old Testament. 00:14:51.679 --> 00:14:57.259 Take, for example, the number seven. 00:14:59.139 --> 00:15:03.219 Seven shows up many times in the book of Revelation. 00:15:03.220 --> 00:15:08.200 And so when you hear the word seven, you need to be thinking a certain way. 00:15:08.540 --> 00:15:11.980 What is the earliest reference to the number seven in your Bible? 00:15:12.300 --> 00:15:13.800 The seventh day of creation. 00:15:14.180 --> 00:15:16.660 It's when things were brought to completion. 00:15:16.659 --> 00:15:26.379 And so when we see these sevens repeated, there is this sense of fullness of completion that's trying to be communicated through that. 00:15:28.120 --> 00:15:33.679 And what I want to do is as we go through, I want to help you make the connection. 00:15:34.779 --> 00:15:44.980 Help you understand when John refers to this woman on a beast in Revelation chapter 12, what is he talking that will help us understand this text is the basic understanding of the historical context going on in the first century. 00:16:01.720 --> 00:16:07.879 This book was originally written to seven churches in Turkey in the first century. 00:16:08.340 --> 00:16:14.240 Particular people at a particular place at a particular time dealing with particular issues. 00:16:14.980 --> 00:16:21.279 The more that we can understand that, that's going to help us get a sense of what John is saying. 00:16:22.139 --> 00:16:28.220 So all these together give us great confidence in saying, hey, we may not know everything in the book of Revelation. 00:16:29.840 --> 00:16:32.800 But God wants to give us. 00:16:33.300 --> 00:16:38.000 He wants to show us what he means in the book of Revelation.
