00:01:14.979 I said it was a fictitious story. 00:01:14.980 --> 00:01:27.200 The punchline was that she was able to squeeze half a cup more juice out of an orange after a 150 kilogram hulk of a man reality is that all too often raising funds for ministry and charity is in fact like squeezing out those last drops and making a little bit go too far or stretch far. 00:01:46.179 --> 00:01:50.819 This is certainly what's been happening for us as a church this year. 00:01:51.299 --> 00:02:00.479 And so this core value that we're looking at tonight, number six in our series of seven of our core 00:02:47.860 It seems that money is a big deal to God, probably because it's a very big deal to us. 00:02:48.640 --> 00:02:55.020 Jesus talked about money 10 to 20 times more than he talked about sex, picked, Jesus sets money up as the alternative God when he says you cannot serve both God and money. 00:03:06.980 --> 00:03:16.680 Now, given that money is a big deal to God, it shouldn't surprise us that what the Bible does is it revolutionizes our view of money and possessions and generosity. 00:03:16.680 --> 00:03:30.400 For instance, 1 Chronicles 28 and 29, King David is praying in response to the overwhelming generosity of the people of God to build the temple in Jerusalem. 00:03:30.960 --> 00:03:34.780 And he says, everything in heaven and earth is yours. 00:03:35.719 --> 00:03:37.960 Wealth and honor come from you. 00:03:38.659 --> 00:03:39.939 Everything comes from you. 00:03:39.939 --> 00:03:44.400 And we have given only what comes from your hand. 00:03:46.560 --> 00:03:50.840 might seem a little bit offensive because you might have worked pretty hard for what you have. 00:03:59.419 --> 00:04:11.560 But those verses from 1 Chronicles and others like them in the Bible say that you've been working very hard with abilities, opportunities, circumstances and health that God's provided. 00:04:11.659 --> 00:04:13.619 A bunch of other stuff that God himself has provided. 00:04:15.079 --> 00:04:25.259 But it's not just that everything that we have comes from God, but that everything that comes from God is still God's. 00:04:25.419 --> 00:04:27.399 He still has language is that God uses in Malachi 3. 00:05:29.399 --> 00:05:31.800 If you've got your Bibles there, Malachi 3. 00:05:32.860 --> 00:05:41.000 When referring to God's people's failure to be generous, he says, you have robbed me. 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:43.819 And so chapter 3, verse 8, God poses a question. 00:05:44.300 --> 00:05:48.040 Will a man rob God, yet you rob me? 00:05:50.120 --> 00:05:54.639 The word rob there is a very rare word in the Bible. 00:05:55.620 --> 00:05:57.600 In fact, it's used in only one other place. 00:05:58.060 --> 00:06:03.180 It's in Zechariah 5, verse 3, where it's translated as curse. 00:06:03.180 --> 00:06:09.519 And it's a word that really means to oppress, to pillage, to plunder. 00:06:10.079 --> 00:06:12.639 It's quite a violent word. 00:06:13.900 --> 00:06:18.540 And this is what the people of God were doing to God when they weren't being generous. 00:06:18.759 --> 00:06:21.240 And so they hear this and they're shocked. 00:06:21.399 --> 00:06:23.680 Verse 8 says, how do we rob you? 00:06:24.019 --> 00:06:27.980 How could we possibly be doing that to you, God? 00:06:28.259 --> 00:06:30.259 What on earth are you talking about? 00:06:30.259 --> 00:06:34.300 And God comes back and says in verse 8, in tithes and offerings, 00:06:34.539 --> 00:06:39.719 that is how you are pillaging and plundering and raping my purposes for the world. 00:06:40.719 --> 00:06:42.920 He says, you are robbing me. 00:06:43.639 --> 00:06:48.139 When I say that, I'm talking about your lack of generosity, you know, with the money that I'm giving you. 00:06:48.199 --> 00:06:50.980 I'm talking about the fact that you hold on to too much of it. 00:06:51.019 --> 00:06:54.159 You spend too much of it on yourself and you don't give enough away. 00:06:55.039 --> 00:06:58.199 So when they're keeping it for themselves, they are robbing God. 00:06:58.199 --> 00:07:01.920 They're plundering, pillaging, raping God's purpose for his Greed is a sin that blinds you to its presence. 00:07:32.500 --> 00:07:33.060 I'll show you what I mean. 00:07:33.160 --> 00:07:34.840 Verse, Luke chapter 12. 00:07:34.839 --> 00:07:38.039 Jesus says, watch out. 00:07:38.119 --> 00:07:40.119 And it's a massive explanation, Mark. 00:07:40.139 --> 00:07:41.099 I won't yell it at you. 00:07:41.419 --> 00:07:45.060 But Jesus says, watch out against all kinds of greed. 00:07:46.939 --> 00:07:52.120 There's no other place where Jesus says, watch out for all kinds of sexual immorality. 00:07:52.719 --> 00:07:54.979 Watch out for all kinds of adultery. 00:07:54.980 --> 00:07:59.520 It's not because adultery is any less sinful. 00:08:00.060 --> 00:08:08.080 It's because we're blind to greed and materialism in a way that we're not blind to sexual assumption. 00:08:49.379 --> 00:08:52.200 I'm not saying it's necessarily true of you. 00:08:52.200 --> 00:08:56.160 I'm saying that the only way to give credence to the text of Scripture 00:08:56.160 think it's anything. 00:09:06.040 --> 00:09:08.940 Because it's a blind spot, by nature, we need other people to help us. 00:09:10.259 --> 00:09:13.100 Fortunately, the Bible does give us at least one Testament. 00:10:06.919 --> 00:10:11.279 It's in Luke chapter 11 verse 42, Jesus talking to the Pharisees. 00:10:11.339 --> 00:10:11.759 And he says, 00:10:12.199 --> 00:10:12.860 Woe to you. 00:10:12.939 --> 00:10:14.199 There's that word curse again. 00:10:14.539 --> 00:10:15.979 Curse you Pharisees. 00:10:16.439 --> 00:10:20.500 Because you give God a tenth of your mint, your rue and other kinds of garden herbs, 00:10:20.679 --> 00:10:23.620 but you neglect justice and the love of God. 00:10:23.779 --> 00:10:27.199 You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. 00:10:28.519 --> 00:10:30.479 You see, the trouble with the Pharisees 00:10:30.479 --> 00:10:35.620 is that they were operating with a legalistic limitation mindset. 00:10:35.620 --> you, in fact, 00:11:23.700 --> 00:11:27.540 can give less than the Old Testament people. 00:11:27.539 --> 00:11:35.199 And I suspect the reason tithing isn't mentioned a whole lot in the New Testament whether we at all are in the range God expects us to be 00:11:52.500 --> 00:11:56.500 and from there to see what we can do beyond it. 00:11:58.460 --> 00:12:01.080 Now, I also think that Malachi 3 00:12:16.720 --> 00:12:20.240 And God's instruction here is for his people 00:12:20.240 --> 00:12:24.200 to give of their gold and their silver and so on 00:12:24.200 --> 00:12:27.600 into the
