00:00:23.879 --> 00:00:29.460 Here in John chapter 12, this is after the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. 00:00:30.019 --> 00:00:32.240 The Greeks have come to see Jesus. 00:00:32.960 --> 00:00:37.820 And now Jesus has told his disciples that he's deeply troubled in his soul. 00:00:38.520 --> 00:00:45.399 He's wrestling with his thoughts and emotions with the difficulty of this hour that has now come for him. 00:00:45.399 --> 00:00:55.960 And at the end of this, here in verse 28, Jesus prays out loud to God in front of the whole group standing around. 00:00:56.060 --> 00:00:59.060 And he says, Father, glorify your name. 00:00:59.460 --> 00:01:02.380 And something awesome happened. 00:01:03.179 --> 00:01:08.299 God the Father answered back to Jesus with an audible 00:01:18.799 --> 00:01:32.159 This little exchange reminds me of other places in John's gospel where we seem to catch a glimpse of this special relationship between God the Father and Jesus the Son. 00:01:32.159 --> 00:01:34.939 There's a kind of strangeness to this. 00:01:34.939 --> 00:01:40.799 We feel almost like we're outsiders listening in on this conversation between Jesus and his Father. your name. 00:01:48.879 --> 00:01:50.459 I have and I will. 00:01:51.259 --> 00:01:52.819 But we're maybe not so sure. 00:01:52.959 --> 00:01:55.719 What exactly is Jesus asking God to do here? 00:01:55.719 --> 00:01:59.700 He says, glorify your name. 00:01:59.700 --> 00:02:05.739 And we might paraphrase that with other words like magnify, exalt, lift high your name. 00:02:06.920 --> talked about how the father will glorify him. 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:30.280 But if we're reading this carefully, we'll notice that Jesus is praying and asking God, his father, to exalt and lift high 00:06:47.060 So how can it be that God says, I have glorified my name and I will glorify it again? 00:06:49.099 --> 00:06:52.620 Well, this is a much neglected discussion in the Christian church today. 00:06:52.740 --> 00:06:54.199 So we're going to talk about it this morning. 00:06:54.599 --> 00:06:58.539 Does God act to bring glory to his own name? 00:06:58.540 --> 00:07:01.220 I'll give you the short answer first. 00:07:02.439 --> 00:07:03.000 Absolutely. 00:07:03.879 --> 00:07:06.480 God acts to bring glory to his own name. 00:07:06.600 --> 00:07:11.500 But in his case alone, he is absolutely right to do it. 00:07:12.520 --> 00:07:17.580 First of all, let's look at a couple places in the Bible where God makes it clear that he does this. 00:07:18.920 --> 00:07:22.040 Exodus chapter 9 verse 16. 00:07:22.720 --> 00:07:24.980 We've been going through the story with the kids and alive. 00:07:24.980 --> 00:07:31.560 This is God telling Moses word for word what to say to show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. 00:07:45.439 --> 00:07:50.800 In other words, God's reason for raising this man, this Pharaoh to power in Egypt 00:07:50.800 00:27:52.179 --> 00:27:54.319 He knows that Lazarus is going to die. 00:27:55.079 --> 00:27:59.139 He knows that he's going to go down there and raise Lazarus from the dead. 00:27:59.140 --> 00:28:03.180 And so the sickness, Jesus says, 00:28:03.280 --> 00:28:07.520 It's an opportunity for God to be glorified. 00:28:08.500 --> 00:28:09.759 And the son as well. 00:28:12.160 --> 00:28:15.580 How does Lazarus being raised from the dead bring glory to God? 00:28:15.900 --> 00:28:17.800 It shows God's power. 00:28:18.580 --> 00:28:21.180 It shows how he can give life. 00:28:21.280 --> 00:28:22.860 How he can do what we can't do. 00:28:24.860 --> 00:28:27.480 And the very same act also brings glory to the son. 00:28:27.480 --> 00:28:31.200 The son is the one who raises Lazarus from the dead. 00:28:32.539 --> 00:28:38.380 And it's here we see this sort of union or togetherness of father and son. 00:28:38.700 --> 00:28:39.960 They work together. 00:28:40.920 00:29:27.180 The healing of the man born blind. 00:29:29.120 --> 00:29:30.400 What did Jesus say? 00:29:31.000 --> 00:29:34.460 It wasn't because this man sinned or his parents sinned. 00:29:34.460 --> 00:29:40.500 No, this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 00:29:41.420 --> 00:29:44.420 And then Jesus gives sight to the man who had never seen. 00:29:45.860 --> 00:29:49.720 In God's great plan, this man was born blind. 00:29:49.720 --> 00:29:54.200 It was so that God could work. 00:29:54.880 --> 00:29:56.420 God could act with his power. 00:29:57.039 -->
