year event to get excited about. 00:05:32.899 --> 00:05:37.560 I say that because of verse 15 of that Bible passage that Wendy read out to us, 00:05:37.919 --> 00:05:40.179 and hopefully we'll get it up on the screen real soon. 00:05:40.620 --> 00:05:41.459 It says this, 00:05:41.459 --> 00:05:43.500 Here is a trustworthy saying, 00:05:43.719 --> 00:05:45.620 and worthy of full acceptance, 00:05:46.120 --> 00:05:48.319 Christ Jesus came into the world. 00:05:48.779 --> 00:05:51.139 That's the Christmas event there. 00:05:51.539 --> 00:05:53.819 Christ Jesus came into the world, 00:05:54.699 --> 00:05:57.639 and the coming of the eternal Son into the world, 00:05:58.000 --> 00:05:59.959 Jesus Christ, is a fact of history. 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:03.419 And that's what we're here to gather to remember today. 00:06:04.099 --> 00:06:05.199 It's a fact of history. 00:06:05.379 --> 00:06:06.419 Jesus came into the world. 00:06:06.500 --> 00:06:07.479 We're celebrating it now. 00:06:07.560 --> 00:06:08.399 We're remembering it. 00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:13.199 But the coming of the Son of God into the world is so much more than a fact of history, 00:06:13.399 --> 00:06:18.299 which is why it should not just be sort of pushed to one side and pulled out once a year. 00:06:18.819 --> 00:06:22.519 The historical event we're remembering is a message of hope. 00:06:22.819 --> 00:06:25.579 And when you keep reading the rest of verse 15, you see it. 00:06:25.859 --> 00:06:30.060 Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 00:06:30.060 --> 00:06:38.420 The message of Christmas for you from Jesus Christ this Christmas is hope. 00:06:39.660 --> 00:06:48.860 It's a message that says that whatever is failed, undesirable, wrong, sinful in your life can be changed. children into cynical teenagers, 00:07:03.079 --> 00:07:09.799 into single parents, into cranky husbands, and tired mums, and weird neighbours, 00:07:10.099 --> 00:07:18.659 and aged, and the lonely, and preachers, and lovers, and haters, and you, and me, and all of Chatswood, and the world. 00:07:18.660 --> 00:07:25.780 Since the Son of God lived and died and rose and reigns and is coming again, and destinies being changed by a historical event that happened 2,000 years ago. 00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:47.120 And so what we are talking about here today is so much more than remembering history 00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:53.040 and a retelling of cute stories about babies and mangers. 00:07:55.840 --> 00:08:02.720 Now while there might be some question over the authenticity of Andy Park's daily celebration of Christmas, 00:08:03.100 --> 00:08:10.379 there is no mistake about the impact of Jesus coming into the world in the life of the Apostle Paul. 00:08:11.360 --> 00:08:14.240 Paul was one of the leaders of the Christian church in the first century, 00:08:14.580 --> 00:08:20.000 and his testimony of what Jesus did in his life is what was just read out to us. 00:08:20.319 --> 00:08:21.240 And it's up there on the screen. 00:08:21.319 --> 00:08:23.220 I'm going to kick us off in verse 12. 00:08:23.340 --> 00:08:23.580 It says, 00:08:23.840 --> 00:08:28.699 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has given me strength that he considered me faithful, 00:08:29.100 --> 00:08:30.620 appointing me to his service. 00:08:31.080 --> 00:08:35.320 Even though I was once a blasphemer and persecutor and a violent man, 00:08:35.659 --> 00:08:39.440 I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 00:08:39.440 --> 00:08:43.320 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, 00:08:43.860 --> 00:08:46.600 along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 00:08:47.580 --> 00:08:55.540 And so Paul describes himself here as a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man before he met Jesus. 00:08:56.080 --> 00:09:02.140 This guy used to go around and hunt down Christians in an attempt to devastate the church. 00:09:02.139 --> 00:09:12.259 His biographer, a guy named Luke, described him as a religious predator who breathed out murderous threats against Christians. 00:09:12.659 --> 00:09:13.539 He was callous. 00:09:13.819 --> 00:09:14.740 He was pious. 00:09:15.019 --> 00:09:16.240 He was self-righteous. 00:09:16.340 --> 00:09:17.120 He was bigoted. 00:09:17.480 --> 00:09:18.299 He was a murderer. 00:09:18.740 --> 00:09:23.259 And he was hell-bent on full-scale extermination of the Christian church. 00:09:23.259 --> 00:09:30.460 He was one of the main enemies of Jesus and the early church in the first century. 00:09:31.179 --> 00:09:35.399 He lived day by day with God to his back. 00:09:37.439 --> 00:09:40.100 And yet that, in fact, was a surprise to him. 00:09:41.879 --> 00:09:44.980 He says he acted in ignorance and unbelief. 00:09:44.980 --> 00:09:52.000 He was totally oblivious to that fact that God was to his back in his day-by-day existence. 00:09:53.720 --> 00:09:58.960 The weird thing is that he was actually under the assumption that he and God were okay. 00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:07.879 He had a religious pedigree and a piety that set him apart from most people. 00:10:09.039 --> 00:10:12.920 He was zealous to do what was right and to obey God's law. 00:10:12.919 --> 00:10:19.039 When he persecuted Jesus and the people who followed Jesus, he thought he was actually doing God a favor. 00:10:21.019 --> 00:10:28.479 He was ignorant of the fact that when he stood opposed to Jesus, he stood opposed to the God of the universe. 00:10:29.799 --> 00:10:35.179 And all his religious zeal actually made him an enemy of God. 00:10:36.579 --> 00:10:38.039 And then something happened. 00:10:38.579 --> 00:10:41.519 Halfway down there through verse 15, it says, 00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:43.279 I was shown mercy. 00:10:43.779 --> 00:10:45.159 And then in verse 14, it says, 00:10:45.259 --> 00:10:48.159 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly. 00:10:48.980 --> 00:10:51.860 Another part of the New Testament talks about it. 00:10:52.939 --> 00:10:54.939 Paul was on his way to Damascus. 00:10:55.059 --> 00:10:57.220 He got some orders from the hierarchy to say, 00:10:57.340 --> 00:11:00.460 Go down to Damascus and devastate the church down there. 00:11:00.460 --> 00:11:05.580 So he's got his cronies with him heading on down to Damascus. 00:11:06.220 --> 00:11:07.519 And God met him on the way. 00:11:10.120 --> 00:11:14.960 God met him in his sinful, miserable, self-righteous ignorance. 00:11:15.259 --> 00:11:17.480 And God mercied him. 00:11:18.920 --> 00:11:21.740 Paul calls the great power that brought change in his life, 00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:25.100 The mercy and the grace of our Lord. 00:11:25.320 --> 00:11:26.280 Undeserved favor. 00:11:26.279 --> 00:11:30.399 God did not give Paul what he deserved or what was coming to him. 00:11:31.740 --> 00:11:33.339 He was shown mercy instead. 00:11:35.079 --> 00:11:43.639 That is Paul's first-hand account of the message of Christmas and the impact of Christmas, 00:11:44.039 --> 00:11:47.860 of Jesus coming into this world to save sinners. 00:11:47.860 --> 00:11:57.460 And so why does he tell us his first-hand account of the radical change that Jesus brought in his life? 00:11:58.460 --> 00:12:02.480 The answer to that question is given clearly to us in verse 16, 00:12:02.940 --> 00:12:03.379 which says, 00:12:03.379 --> 00:12:05.480 For that very reason I was shown mercy, 00:12:05.860 --> 00:12:10.759 so that in me the worst of sinners Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience 00:12:10.759 --> 00:12:16.480 as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 00:12:17.220 --> 00:12:18.899 What Paul's saying there is, 00:12:19.419 --> 00:12:23.279 Jesus changed me, the chief of sinners, 00:12:23.759 --> 00:12:26.819 and I'm telling you about it, 00:12:27.080 --> 00:12:30.379 so that today, this Christmas day, 00:12:30.799 --> 00:12:32.779 in Chatswood 2013, 00:12:33.460 --> 00:12:36.480 that you and I would be able to grasp the significance of Christmas. 00:12:36.480 --> 00:12:43.920 Jesus Christ picked the chief of sinners to demonstrate to us today, 00:12:44.060 --> 00:12:45.220 sitting in this building, 00:12:45.500 --> 00:12:48.600 what his mercy and power can do in your life. 00:12:50.039 --> 00:12:57.240 There is no sinner that the grace of God in Christ cannot overflow to and deal with. 00:12:58.060 --> 00:13:01.220 And so we ought not belittle the mercy of God just by saying, 00:13:02.240 --> 00:13:03.399 Well, I just can't change. Paul's personal reason to give thanks to God 00:13:26.320 --> 00:13:31.879 is now widened to praise for the universal significance of Christmas. 00:13:31.879 --> 00:13:37.279 Jesus came into the world for the world. 00:13:37.279 --> 00:13:38.399 For everyone. 00:13:41.399 --> 00:13:44.539 The purpose of Jesus coming into this world to save sinners 00:13:44.539 --> 00:13:49.980 has been welcomed by 2,000 years of human beings 00:13:49.980 --> 00:13:53.320 who, conscious of their guilt before God, 00:13:53.320 --> 00:13:58.940 have gratefully accepted what the saving death of the Lord Jesus accomplished for them 00:13:58.940 --> 00:14:02.640 in bringing them back to their creator God. 00:14:04.220 --> 00:14:06.680 The message in these verses for us now 00:14:06.680 --> 00:14:09.200 is that if God can show mercy, 00:14:09.640 --> 00:14:12.180 who in his ignorance put Christians to prison 00:14:12.180 --> 00:14:14.840 and cast his vote against them so they'd be put to death, 00:14:15.700 --> 00:14:18.180 a master of religious thuggery, 00:14:19.180 --> 00:14:20.440 he can forgive anyone. 00:14:20.440 --> 00:14:25.700 And so Paul calls to us across the centuries 00:14:25.700 --> 00:14:29.760 as we celebrate Christmas in 2013 00:14:29.760 --> 00:14:30.460 and he says, 00:14:30.780 --> 00:14:33.900 don't despair you people sitting here at St. Paul's Jatswood. 00:14:35.340 --> 00:14:37.240 He saved me, the worst of sinners, 00:14:37.760 --> 00:14:39.140 and he can save you. 00:14:40.020 --> 00:14:42.160 There is hope in Jesus. 00:14:42.159 --> 00:14:47.879 Did you notice how massive this hope is? 00:14:49.240 --> 00:14:51.139 The hope of Christmas is that 00:14:51.139 --> 00:14:53.480 because Jesus came into the world to save sinners, 00:14:53.799 --> 00:14:55.259 what is most precious 00:14:55.259 --> 00:14:57.219 doesn't ever have to be lost. 00:14:57.299 --> 00:14:59.039 Do you see there in verse 16 right at the end? 00:14:59.100 --> 00:14:59.939 I will show mercy 00:14:59.939 --> 00:15:01.779 so that in me, the worst of sinners, 00:15:01.899 --> 00:15:03.339 Christ Jesus might display 00:15:03.339 --> 00:15:04.879 his unlimited patience 00:15:04.879 --> 00:15:06.360 as an example for those 00:15:06.360 --> 00:15:08.299 who would believe on him 00:15:08.299 --> 00:15:11.159 and receive eternal life. 00:15:11.159 --> Christmas to you 00:15:55.879 --> 00:15:57.159 from verse 16 00:15:57.159 --> 00:16:00.100 is that you don't ever have to lose your life. 00:16:01.519 --> 00:16:03.179 It is good to live. 00:16:04.840 --> 00:16:06.559 Your life is precious 00:16:06.559 --> 00:16:08.899 and Jesus came to save it. 00:16:09.279 --> 00:16:11.360 Jesus came into this world 00:16:11.360 --> 00:16:12.480 to save us 00:16:38.879 but truly celebrated each day 00:16:38.879 --> 00:16:41.600 as we look in gratitude to Jesus. 00:16:41.600 --> 00:16:46.100 What God did on the first Christmas 00:16:46.100 --> 00:16:47.560 and what he did in forgiving 00:16:47.560 --> 00:16:48.940 and changing Paul's life 00:16:48.940 --> 00:16:50.440 and what he does in forgiving 00:16:50.440 --> 00:16:51.740 and changing
