in turn, a disciple helps others to do the same. 00:03:38.180 --> 00:03:40.520 Now, how do we seek to do that here at the church? 00:03:40.620 --> 00:03:43.579 Well, we devote ourselves as a church to three core things. 00:03:44.900 --> 00:03:47.240 Firstly, we devote ourselves to God's words. 00:03:47.460 --> 00:03:49.240 We're unashamed in our conviction 00:03:49.240 --> 00:03:51.199 that when we open the pages of the Bible, 00:03:51.419 --> 00:03:53.680 we hear God speak. 00:03:54.800 --> 00:03:56.759 Secondly, we devote ourselves to fellowship, 00:03:56.759 --> 00:04:01.020 which is our love for and our commitment to one another. 00:04:01.719 --> 00:04:03.599 Of course, that's what Jesus said, isn't it, to his disciples. 00:04:03.719 --> 00:04:05.139 That's how the world will know you, 00:04:05.400 --> 00:04:07.620 by the way that you love one another. 00:04:07.780 --> 00:04:09.400 And the word fellowship in the Greek 00:04:09.400 --> 00:04:11.259 doesn't just mean playing happy families. 00:04:11.460 --> 00:04:13.280 It means coming alongside each other, 00:04:13.800 --> 00:04:15.300 linking arms out of love 00:04:15.300 --> 00:04:18.480 with a shared ambition of what you --> 00:05:19.520 You'll hear politicians 00:05:19.520 --> 00:05:21.200 in the wake of a tragic event 00:05:21.200 --> 00:05:23.320 talking about how their thoughts and prayers 00:05:23.320 --> 00:05:26.500 are with the family and friends 00:05:26.500 --> 00:05:28.820 of those who have been caught up in a tragedy. 00:05:29.180 --> 00:05:31.620 And our friends of other faiths pray as well. 00:05:32.439 --> 00:05:33.560 Prayer is something that, 00:05:33.800 --> 00:05:36.360 despite our secular leanings as a society, 00:05:36.700 --> 00:05:38.379 we still do. 00:05:38.520 --> 00:05:48.879 is that the disciples too 00:05:48.879 --> 00:05:50.740 are living in a world 00:05:50.740 --> 00:05:52.200 that's saturated in prayer. 00:05:53.460 --> 00:05:57.100 They are accustomed to the religious prayers 00:05:57.100 --> 00:05:59.540 of their contemporaries, 00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:01.840 who in the Gospels are these people 00:06:01.840 --> 00:06:02.540 called the Pharisees, 00:06:03.879 --> 00:06:05.700 whose prayers are very public, 00:06:06.160 --> 00:06:07.860 whose prayers are full of many long 00:06:07.860 --> 00:06:09.620 and many impressive words. 00:06:09.620 --> 00:06:11.680 So they get religious prayer. 00:06:12.300 --> 00:06:13.680 And they also get 00:06:13.680 --> 00:06:15.860 the prayers of the peoples of the nations 00:06:15.860 --> 00:06:16.720 round about them 00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:18.480 who are praying to all sorts of God 00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:20.060 and praying all sorts of things. 00:06:20.420 --> 00:06:21.959 And those prayers are noisy. 00:06:43.199 --> 00:06:44.599 That Jesus has been what? 00:06:46.039 --> 00:06:47.279 He's been praying. 00:06:48.579 --> 00:06:50.579 Now this isn't the first time 00:06:50.579 --> 00:06:52.379 in this Gospel of Luke 00:06:52.379 --> 00:06:54.719 where Jesus prays. 00:06:56.019 --> 00:06:59.099 Where Jesus retreats to a solitary place, 00:06:59.659 --> 00:07:00.919 gets up early 00:07:00.919 --> 00:07:03.699 for a time of undistracted prayer. 00:07:03.839 --> 00:07:04.639 In fact, I counted them, 00:07:04.639 --> 00:07:06.339 and if you count them up until chapter 11, 00:07:06.519 --> 00:07:08.259 three times Jesus has said 00:07:08.259 --> 00:07:10.180 to be praying. 00:07:10.399 --> 00:07:13.639 So when Jesus talks about prayer here, 00:07:14.740 --> 00:07:15.659 we need to understand 00:07:15.659 --> 00:07:17.399 that this is not a spur-of-the-moment 00:07:17.399 --> 00:07:19.279 inclination to go to Facebook 00:07:19.279 --> 00:07:20.939 and post his thoughts on prayer. 00:07:22.740 --> 00:07:24.219 He's living this. 00:07:26.639 --> 00:07:28.300 And the disciples think to themselves, 00:07:28.439 --> 00:07:29.759 we get religious prayer, 00:07:30.060 --> 00:07:32.379 we know what Gentile prayer sounds like, 00:07:32.379 --> 00:07:34.600 but Jesus, we see in you 00:07:34.600 --> 00:07:37.560 something that's radically 00:07:37.560 --> 00:07:40.540 and refreshingly different. 00:07:40.759 --> 00:07:43.219 Because the religious people who pray, 00:07:43.399 --> 00:07:44.899 the Gentile people who pray, 00:07:45.779 --> 00:07:47.920 they do it for the praise of other people. 00:07:48.360 --> 00:07:49.680 Particularly the religious people 00:07:49.680 --> 00:07:50.980 who are praying in our day. 00:07:51.100 --> 00:07:52.699 They want the Instagram 00:07:58.079 --> 00:07:58.939 for the praise of men. 00:07:58.939 --> 00:08:01.939 I must say it's one of the most 00:08:01.939 --> 00:08:03.920 endearing things about Jesus 00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:06.399 that you read about in the Gospels, 00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:10.699 is just how unstrategic he is 00:08:10.699 --> 00:08:12.819 when it comes to the people 00:08:12.819 --> 00:08:14.819 who he both hangs out with and loves. 00:08:16.399 --> 00:08:17.939 There's nothing in it for him. 00:08:19.180 --> 00:08:21.220 There really is nothing in it for him 00:08:21.220 --> 00:08:22.519 when it
