00:03:05.639 --> 00:03:14.799 So as we look to God's word, before we get there, I want to tell you about misplaced trust. 00:03:15.579 --> 00:03:17.679 I want to talk to you just briefly about misplaced trust. 00:03:18.259 --> 00:03:28.899 In an earlier time in my life, we had this time where I was able to use my finances for essentially strictly myself. 00:03:28.900 --> 00:03:31.740 It was the days of being single, right? 00:03:31.819 --> 00:03:37.080 And I used to go camping with my friends and I used to do things. 00:03:37.180 --> 00:03:43.640 And that's not meant, that's not anything other than to say I had a different life before I stepped into marriage and kids. 00:03:44.379 --> 00:03:52.360 And I had this obsession in my 20s with buying the best rain jacket on the market. 00:03:52.360 --> 00:03:58.400 And I don't know what it was, but my buddies and I, we talked about this all the time. 00:03:58.720 --> 00:04:01.040 It was, you know, I feel like a very strange thing. 00:04:01.520 --> 00:04:05.440 But I was obsessed and we were like, you know, North Face, Patagonia, Mountain Hardware. 00:04:05.760 --> 00:04:08.280 Oh, and what about this obscure brand from Norway? 00:04:08.480 --> 00:04:09.980 And we're like, maybe, that might be it. 00:04:09.979 --> 00:04:15.479 But it was something that I was willing to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on. 00:04:16.860 --> 00:04:19.379 And, I mean, we looked at everything, we talked everything. 00:04:19.480 --> 00:04:26.920 And even in those mid-2000s, early-ish internet days, we read everything possible on it. 00:04:27.319 --> 00:04:29.560 And I remember picking this one out. 00:04:29.560 --> 00:04:40.379 And because it was not the $10,000 go hike, you know, Mount Everest type jacket, but it was more like a normal human jacket. 00:04:41.720 --> 00:04:45.939 And so all the specs keeps water out like this percentage. 00:04:46.459 --> 00:04:48.579 The glues on the seams can never break. 00:04:48.740 --> 00:04:56.340 The stitching, the waterproof technology, the plastic used, the inner lining, everything seemed to be incredibly trustworthy. 00:04:56.339 --> 00:05:06.159 And so I wear it to the first football game one Saturday because I know it's going to rain during the game. 00:05:06.399 --> 00:05:14.899 And I put it on and it's not a downpour, not a torrential rain, not a flood, a light rain. 00:05:16.739 --> 00:05:21.339 And when I tell you it would have been the same as if I had not worn a rain jacket, 00:05:21.339 --> 00:05:26.039 that would have been the exact same. 00:05:26.139 --> 00:05:29.659 Had I worn a rain jacket or not worn a rain jacket, I would have been equally wet that day. 00:05:30.500 --> 00:05:32.279 The rain jacket failed me. 00:05:33.239 --> 00:05:35.599 It did literally could not weather the storm. 00:05:51.939 --> 00:06:03.000 God's word has weathered historical, critical, religious storms and continues to do so even now. 00:06:04.060 --> 00:06:08.199 It does not fail the way that my rain jacket did. 00:06:08.199 --> 00:06:19.599 The 27 books of the New Testament, the 39 books of the Old Testament, the 66 books contained into the scriptures that we Christians hold to the highest regard 00:06:19.599 --> 00:06:25.899 has been scrutinized and studied over and over and over and over again. 00:06:27.300 --> 00:06:31.740 And it has held up over and over and over again. 00:06:31.740 --> 00:06:34.720 And there are, of course, those who do not believe. 00:06:35.340 --> 00:06:37.879 I do not wish to just mindlessly go over that. 00:06:38.519 --> 00:06:44.699 I know there are people who struggle with what, even as Christians, who struggle with what's contained in the word of God. 00:06:46.280 --> 00:06:56.960 And even as the most tested book in the world, I believe it is something that we can trust. 00:06:56.959 --> 00:07:02.239 And I think there are some key things that we need to think through why we should trust it. 00:07:02.659 --> 00:07:04.739 Why it is a trustworthy book for us. 00:07:05.379 --> 00:07:10.379 And I think the first one, as I'd like to tell us, is that it was given to us by God himself. 00:07:11.839 --> 00:07:18.740 And that, to me, is really important because the author doesn't just lie on those who wrote the books. 00:07:18.740 --> 00:07:22.079 Because God used those who wrote the books. 00:07:22.699 --> 00:07:26.199 But God himself gave us these scriptures. 00:07:26.959 --> 00:07:29.180 And we see this example in 2 Timothy. 00:07:29.519 --> 00:07:31.359 And we see it in 2 Peter 1. 00:07:31.439 --> 00:07:33.560 But we're going to focus on 2 Timothy here. 00:07:34.039 --> 00:07:36.339 Verse 16, chapter 3. 00:07:37.139 --> 00:07:40.180 All scripture is breathed out by God. 00:07:40.459 --> 00:07:43.219 And profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction. 00:07:43.599 --> 00:07:45.000 And for training in righteousness. 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:47.579 That the man of God may be complete. 00:07:48.159 --> 00:07:49.319 Equipped for every good work. 00:07:49.819 --> 00:07:52.759 And this word, theonoustos, breathed out by God. 00:07:52.759 --> 00:07:53.240 Right? 00:07:53.240 --> 00:07:59.879 Means that the scriptures were given to us by God's breath carrying along those who are writing it. 00:07:59.879 --> 00:08:10.579 And I think when God is the one who has given us his word, it gives us this sense of weight and gravitas to God's word. 00:08:10.579 --> 00:08:12.420 And importance to God's word. 00:08:12.779 --> 00:08:15.800 A weight that is one we must hold fast to. 00:08:16.439 --> 00:08:20.100 Because it is not something that we picked or just chose. 00:08:20.219 --> 00:08:22.759 Though that's a conversation for another time. 00:08:22.759 --> because it is something helpful. 00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:46.939 Or it gives us good advice. 00:08:46.939 --> 00:08:49.240 Or it gives us a good way to live our lives. 00:08:49.699 --> 00:08:51.120 Not because of its goodness. 00:08:51.519 --> 00:08:52.959 Or its application. 00:08:53.379 --> 00:08:55.559 Or its usefulness to us. 00:08:55.679 --> 00:08:57.139 Or its culture building. 00:08:57.399
