for us because the church, I think, in our day is waking up to the hostility that we face in our culture at this particular moment. 00:00:56.679 --> 00:01:09.799 You see, in a few short decades, many of you won't need me to tell you this, but in a few short decades, it has gone from being the case that the church was seen in the culture as a positive thing, as a cause for good, 00:01:10.579 --> 00:01:17.060 as if you had put church member on your CV when applying for a job, it may have served you well. 00:01:17.060 --> 00:01:32.520 It has gone from there to really being a bit of an irrelevance to a completely new phase in the last number of years, and that is that the church, the Christian faith, Christians, Christianity is dangerous. 00:01:32.519 --> 00:01:44.179 There's a lot of culture, isn't there at the moment, but nobody in this moment is saying, hey, why don't we ask the Christians what they think? 00:01:45.439 --> 00:01:50.219 Nobody, as they seek answers for the problems that we face in our society, are saying, do you know what? 00:01:50.219 --> 00:02:02.459 I reckon it would be really helpful if we turned to the ancient truths of the Bible to look for Because, as many of you will know, the Corinthian here is a church in a cosmopolitan, wealthy, important, influential city that is struggling with exactly the same kind of cultural pressure. 00:04:01.340 --> 00:04:04.439 And if you know anything about this letter, you know that they aren't doing well. 00:04:05.219 --> 00:04:08.740 And so the Apostle Paul has written to them to correct them. 00:04:09.140 --> 00:04:11.400 Paul's tone is quite direct at times. 00:04:11.460 --> 00:04:16.579 And there is definitely a bit of tension in the relationship between the Apostle and this church. 00:04:16.579 --> 00:04:25.199 But it looks, as you read the letter of 1 Corinthians, like what has happened in the church is that this church has stopped being in the culture. 00:04:25.519 --> 00:04:28.240 Rather, the culture is now in the church. 00:04:28.939 --> 00:04:33.039 And it is striking when you read the letter to see the similarities with our day. 00:04:33.979 --> 00:04:34.959 Corinth is impressive. 00:04:35.639 --> 00:04:36.879 As a place, it's impressive. 00:04:37.500 --> 00:04:41.759 And so the Christians in Corinth want their Christianity to fit with that vibe. 00:04:42.740 --> 00:04:44.379 They love influential people. 00:04:44.379 --> 00:04:48.300 They love people who do business and socialize in the right places. 00:04:48.439 --> 00:04:50.439 Chapters 8 to 10 deal with that. 00:04:51.300 --> 00:04:53.540 Now, isn't that what we want in our day? 00:04:54.519 --> 00:05:00.040 Deep down, actually, our instincts are that we're embarrassed about our weakness in the world's eyes. 00:05:02.279 --> 00:05:06.980 But chapter 4 tells us that Christ-like weakness is our model. 00:05:07.719 --> 00:05:10.259 There is no Christian faith without Christ-like In politics, in sport, in online personalities. 00:05:26.899 --> 00:05:28.279 And it's in the church as well. 00:05:28.659 --> 00:05:32.319 I follow fill-in-the-blank of your favorite celebrity preacher. 00:05:32.319 --> 00:05:41.699 And the triumph of the idea that personal pleasure is the most important thing in life. 00:05:42.240 --> 00:05:43.599 It's rife in Corinth. 00:05:44.540 --> 00:05:46.959 Now, that sounds very familiar to us, doesn't it? 00:05:48.120 --> 00:05:52.879 Especially when, in Corinth, the issue as it relates to sex and marriage. 00:05:52.980 --> 00:05:54.480 Chapters 6 and 7 deal with that. 00:05:54.600 --> 00:05:56.360 Corinth was known for this. 00:05:56.360 --> 00:06:00.319 So much so that Aristophanes coined the term Corinthian. 00:06:00.699 --> 00:06:03.960 And he coined that term to describe sexual immorality. 00:06:04.900 --> 00:06:10.259 Back in the day, if a group of mates had planned a trip to Corinth, everybody knew what they had in mind. 00:06:10.259 --> 00:06:16.680 And, of course, the church in our day isn't excelling in these areas either. 00:06:17.219 --> 00:06:26.439 As it seems, one after another gives ground, gives way, gives up on God's word as it comes to the issues of sex and marriage. 00:06:26.539 --> 00:06:28.920 I heard a church leader in London say not so long ago, 00:06:29.420 --> 00:06:31.860 what people do in their bedrooms isn't the church's business. 00:06:34.579 --> 00:06:39.699 Then the divisions in society between rich and poor have all come into the church in Corinth as well. 00:06:39.699 --> 00:06:43.000 As has the Corinthian confusion about gender. 00:06:43.500 --> 00:06:45.039 Chapter 11 deals with that. 00:06:45.279 --> 00:06:48.060 And the church is also divided about the gifts that God has given them. 00:06:48.120 --> 00:06:52.480 That's perhaps what the Corinthian church is most famous for. 00:06:53.740 --> 00:06:55.079 Chapters 12 to 14. 00:06:55.480 --> 00:06:59.759 They behave like there's an elite group who are super spiritual and better than everybody else. 00:06:59.980 --> 00:07:00.959 And then there's the rest. 00:07:01.939 --> 00:07:07.860 It seems that they have taken simply the superiority of the culture and the idea that there are the elites and the rest. 00:07:07.860 --> 00:07:10.319 They've taken that and they've just baptized it into the church. 00:07:12.100 --> 00:07:13.319 Corinth are off track. 00:07:14.759 --> 00:07:17.100 And this letter is a course correction. 00:07:18.379 --> 00:07:21.639 When you read the letter, Paul has clearly been in dialogue with them before. 00:07:21.860 --> 00:07:22.699 He wrote this letter. 00:07:23.199 --> 00:07:26.660 Some of what he says is responding to questions that they have asked. 00:07:27.520 --> 00:07:29.939 But why do I give us that kind of overview of the letter? 00:07:29.939 --> 00:07:42.079 Well, because what I want us to see this evening is that Paul begins his correspondence to this confused and compromised church in a remarkable place. 00:07:44.180 --> 00:07:48.480 He starts by reminding this church that they are. 00:07:48.600 --> 00:07:49.639 Here's my first point. 00:07:50.300 --> 00:07:51.360 Blessed by Christ. 00:07:52.319 --> 00:07:54.040 Point one, they are blessed by Christ. 00:07:54.040 --> 00:07:54.800 Look at verse 1. 00:07:54.800 --> 00:08:01.620 Paul called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus and our brother Sosthenes to the church of God that is in Corinth, 00:08:02.080 --> 00:08:03.980 to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, 00:08:04.480 --> 00:08:10.100 called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:08:10.220 --> 00:08:11.400 both their Lord and ours. 00:08:11.860 --> 00:08:14.780 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:08:16.180 --> 00:08:22.240 On one level, this sounds a bit like any typical Pauline introduction to one of his letters. 00:08:22.240 --> 00:08:24.180 So why is it so remarkable? 00:08:24.439 --> 00:08:28.620 Well, because of the emphasis on God's grace. 00:08:30.460 --> 00:08:35.840 Despite all the sin, despite all the disgraceful behavior that Paul is going to call this church on, 00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:38.539 he starts with God's grace to them in Christ. 00:08:39.960 --> 00:08:42.299 They are the church of God. 00:08:43.440 --> 00:08:46.399 I will say more a bit later on in the sermon on that. 00:08:46.639 --> 00:08:49.379 But this means that they are no ordinary group of people. 00:08:50.200 --> 00:08:51.600 They are chosen by God. 00:08:51.600 --> 00:08:54.800 Verse 2, they are sanctified in Christ Jesus. 00:08:55.100 --> 00:08:56.680 Sanctified means set apart. 00:08:57.960 --> the Corinthians have been called to be saints. 00:09:55.659 --> 00:09:58.059 Paul did not achieve his apostleship. 00:09:58.120 --> 00:09:59.120 It was given to him. 00:09:59.319 --> 00:10:02.459 And the Corinthians did not achieve their status as holy. 00:10:02.460 --> 00:10:04.780 It was given to them as a gift. 00:10:07.420 --> 00:10:13.860 The way it works is that when someone calls on the name of Christ, 00:10:14.560 --> 00:10:18.820 that is evidence that God has already called them. 00:10:19.060 --> 00:10:21.780 Salvation is God's work. 00:10:22.360 --> 00:10:23.400 Yes, we respond. 00:10:33.000 But you only do that because God has changed your heart. 00:10:35.860 --> 00:10:44.379 We should note that the root word here for sanctified and saints are variations of the name of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:45.299 --> 00:10:51.019 What Paul is saying is that the Holy Spirit is self-evidently present in their life together. 00:10:52.100 --> 00:10:57.299 He is self-evidently present in the lives of these people that he's going to call on all of this sin 00:10:57.299 --> 00:10:59.840 and disgraceful behavior later in the letter. 00:11:00.620 --> 00:11:01.939 They are blessed by has not simply, I could say simply, it's not simply at all, is it? 00:11:39.539 --> 00:11:41.519 It's supernaturally incredible. 00:11:41.519 --> 00:11:50.019 But he has not merely saved them, set them apart as his, but he has also gifted them richly as well. 00:11:50.159 --> 00:11:56.059 And he has confirmed his grace among them in their knowledge of the gospel and their ability to teach others. 00:11:56.059 --> 00:12:00.539 He's saying, you lack nothing in terms of gifts from God. 00:12:00.539 --> 00:12:08.699 Going a step further, because this is evident, Paul can say that then having, as he sees the evidence of God's grace in their lives, 00:12:08.759 --> 00:12:12.939 he says that having started this work in them, God will continue to completion. 00:12:13.079 --> 00:12:15.679 He will get them safely to glory. 00:12:15.679 --> 00:12:23.219 The Corinthian church might look like a complete shambles. 00:12:23.220 --> 00:12:31.800 If we were to look on at them and their relationships and the way that they're behaving, we'd be tempted to think that it's a complete mess. 00:12:31.920 --> 00:12:35.460 And Paul is going to tackle that mess head on in this letter. 00:12:35.460 --> 00:12:41.519 He'll call them fleshly, carnal, rather than spiritual in chapter 3 because of the way that they're behaving. 00:12:41.620 --> 00:12:46.680 But that does not take away from the lofty heights of these words in this introduction. 00:12:47.900 --> 00:12:49.740 They are blessed by Christ. 00:12:50.759 --> 00:12:53.960 Did you hear how cumbersome it sounded when the But we're all expert in justifying our sin. 00:13:50.159 --> 00:13:51.740 If we're honest with ourselves, we know that. 00:13:52.919 --> 00:13:53.459 Yeah, but. 00:13:54.559 --> 00:13:55.620 Ah, yeah, but. 00:13:55.620 --> 00:14:01.919 There was probably a time when the guy in chapter 5 that is mentioned there who is sleeping with his stepmother 00:14:01.919 --> 00:14:04.980 would have been horrified at the thought of doing something like that. 00:14:05.960 --> 00:14:07.539 And now he's meeting with the pastor and he's saying, 00:14:07.639 --> 00:14:10.759 Yeah, look, I know it's not great, but here's the thing. 00:14:12.320 --> 00:14:16.060 And there was possibly a time when the church would have dealt decisively with that issue. 00:14:16.059 --> 00:14:20.879 If you read chapter 5, it's actually not the guy in sin that Paul is rebuking. 00:14:21.099 --> 00:14:23.819 It's the church for tolerating that behavior. 00:14:23.820 --> 00:14:28.540 And now at their members' meetings,
