00:01:00.500 It's not about just memorizing the words that go along with these things that's so important, 00:01:00.659 --> 00:01:07.539 but rather recognizing the beauty of the song, getting excited about being a part of what 00:01:07.539 --> 00:01:09.840 God is doing through His church. 00:01:09.960 --> 00:01:16.859 So we talked last week about our vision to advance the kingdom of God, to see the rule 00:01:16.859 --> 00:01:20.659 and the reign of King Jesus made evident everywhere. 00:01:20.659 --> 00:01:26.700 The challenge of pursuing the kingdom of King Jesus ahead of our own kingdoms, right? 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:33.039 The joy of seeing His rule move forward both in word and in deed. 00:01:33.259 --> 00:01:39.780 That anyone who gets near us is both to hear of King Jesus and to feel the reality of the kingdom, 00:01:40.039 --> 00:01:46.519 to experience that, to have winter thawing, as it were, in their lives. 00:01:46.519 --> 00:01:54.959 That gracious kingdom advances with me if you will to Psalm 145. 00:03:24.740 --> 00:03:31.340 Psalm 145 is a beautiful psalm where we're going to focus in on just a few verses that speak of the next generation, 00:03:31.340 --> 00:03:39.219 but I'm going to read the whole thing and you'll notice as I do some of these other themes of the gracious kingdom of God in here as well. 00:03:39.460 --> 00:03:43.199 Let's give our attention to the holy and inerrant word of God. 00:03:43.340 --> 00:03:45.240 Psalm 145. 00:03:46.099 --> 00:03:50.560 I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. 00:03:51.199 --> 00:03:54.759 Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever. 00:03:55.340 --> 00:04:00.379 Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable. 00:04:01.340 --> 00:04:07.259 One generation shall commend your works to another and shall declare your mighty acts. 00:04:07.539 --> 00:04:11.819 On the glorious splendor of your majesty and on your wondrous works I will meditate. 00:04:12.560 --> 00:04:17.139 They will speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness. 00:04:17.780 --> 00:04:23.240 Don't you love Psalm 145? 00:06:28.040 --> 00:06:30.879 Isn't that a beautiful psalm of praise? 00:06:31.580 --> 00:06:33.480 Over and over, praising God. 00:06:33.580 --> 00:06:36.680 We're going to focus in on verses 4 through 7 this morning, 00:06:36.840 --> 00:06:38.560 talking about the next generation. 00:06:38.700 --> 00:06:43.780 But before we get there, just notice the context of those comments that David makes in this psalm. 00:06:43.860 --> 00:06:44.639 What's the context? 00:06:44.759 --> 00:06:45.720 What's the psalm about? 00:06:45.720 --> 00:06:50.180 Line after line after line of praise to God, right? 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:52.580 Look at the verbs he uses. 00:06:53.420 --> 00:07:00.000 One verb after another, praise, bless, extol, speak of, make known, give thanks. 00:07:00.700 --> 00:07:05.700 David's desire to make much of God, that God's name would be great. 00:07:06.420 --> 00:07:08.380 That's what this psalm is about. 00:07:08.379 --> 00:07:18.100 He praises God for who He is, for His unparalleled character, the great King, the eternal ruler, 00:07:18.620 --> 00:07:29.779 majestic, gracious, merciful, slow to anger, faithful, glorious, powerful, righteous, good. 00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:33.259 All of those things He is. 00:07:33.379 --> 00:07:34.759 There's no one like Him. 00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:37.259 No one like this God, is there? 00:07:38.379 --> 00:07:44.100 And David praises God also for what He has done, for His unmatched deeds, 00:07:44.240 --> 00:07:49.439 particularly when he talks about those, most of them are referring to God's great works of salvation, 00:07:50.159 --> 00:07:55.100 His deliverance, His rescue, where He raises up the lowly, 00:07:56.060 --> 00:08:01.060 upholding the falling, providing for the needy, protecting His children. 00:08:01.740 --> 00:08:04.360 God is and does all of these things. 00:08:04.360 --> 00:08:06.319 Indeed, verse 3 is right. 00:08:06.319 --> 00:08:08.879 His greatness is unsearchable. 00:08:09.599 --> 00:08:14.199 I can read lists of adjectives and nouns and verbs to you this morning, 00:08:14.379 --> 00:08:17.800 and we will never plumb the depths of His 00:08:32.820 Meditating on the glorious splendor of His majesty and His wondrous works. 00:08:32.940 --> 00:08:34.340 You know what it does, David says? 00:08:34.560 --> 00:08:35.860 It leads to praise. 00:08:36.440 --> 00:08:37.700 Have you been there recently? 00:08:38.800 --> 00:08:41.060 Thinking of who He is and what He's done for you, 00:08:41.100 --> 00:08:47.060 and you just can't help but praise Him for all that He is and has done for you. 00:08:47.059 --> 00:08:50.719 That's what we were made for, isn't it? 00:08:51.139 --> 00:08:54.139 That's why we were created, that we might bring glory to Him, 00:08:54.199 --> 00:08:58.000 that we might know Him and praise Him because of how great He is. 00:08:58.459 --> 00:09:02.719 Verse 21 sums up the conclusion of all of these we miss the benefit to us of stopping and slowing down 00:09:17.160 --> 00:09:20.400 and realizing who God is and what He's done for us. 00:09:20.660 --> 00:09:26.120 We miss the blessing of having our hearts moved to praise of God's glorious greatness. 00:09:27.460 --> 00:09:29.460 Theologian Stephen Charnock writes, 00:09:29.460 --> 00:09:36.000 We conclude many things about God that we do not practically suck the comfort of 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:40.560 for lack of deep thoughts of it and frequent inspection of it. 00:09:40.800 --> 00:09:43.340 He says there's a lot of things we say about God, 00:09:43.780 --> 00:09:47.680 but we don't slow down to suck the comfort out of it. 00:09:48.100 --> 00:09:50.360 The praise that it draws out of our hearts, 00:09:50.460 --> 00:09:54.820 the comfort it gives us to stop and consider who God actually is. 00:09:54.820 --> 00:10:01.820 David here in considering who God is and what he has done is moved to make much of God, 00:10:01.900 --> does David want himself to make much of God, 00:12:05.919 --> 00:12:07.879 to exalt God throughout the Psalm, 00:12:08.080 --> 00:12:11.059 but look back at what he wants to pass on to the next Egypt, right? 00:18:00.879 --> 00:18:05.440 Here would be one of the prime examples in the Old Testament of God's mighty deeds. 00:18:05.740 --> 00:18:08.480 His deliverance of people from slavery.
