find the Bible underwhelming. 00:01:27.600 --> 00:01:30.680 We read it and say, is that all there is? 00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:33.160 Is that the big reveal? 00:01:33.380 --> 00:01:34.540 Is that the big message? 00:01:34.760 --> 00:01:36.580 And we're often disappointed. 00:01:36.860 --> 00:01:41.360 In fact, there's whole books written on the problem of disappointment with God. 00:01:41.359 --> 00:01:49.780 Well, I want to suggest the text that we're going to look at today is a prime example of how we can be disappointed with God. 00:01:50.280 --> 00:01:54.200 But what it reveals is actually a lack of insight about ourselves. 00:01:55.019 --> 00:02:03.260 And sort of a, I don't mean to offend you, when I say, like I'm including myself in this, you know, in the words of that old, beautiful old song, 00:02:03.260 --> 00:02:06.940 it's me, it's me, it's me, it's me, oh Lord, standing in the need of prayer. 00:02:07.620 --> 00:02:10.140 So this isn't me pointing my finger at other people. 00:02:11.039 --> 00:02:17.420 You know, even if I point my finger, I'm conscious that there's three fingers pointing back at me, only one pointing away. 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:24.500 But often, the fact of the matter is, is that we just assume we know about ourselves and we think we know what's important. 00:02:24.920 --> 00:02:26.580 And God's word seems underwhelming. 00:02:26.580 --> 00:02:35.420 But by the grace and mercy of God, slowly and intermittently, I really do realize that the Bible is far wiser than I am. 00:02:35.620 --> 00:02:39.100 And I really need to camp with it and listen to it. 00:02:39.640 --> 00:02:46.120 So with that as a workup, we're going to look at Philippians chapter 2, verse 14 and following. 00:02:47.420 --> 00:02:52.480 In particular, I'm going to read just the first three verses. 00:02:52.479 --> 00:02:57.439 And why this is a little bit underwhelming, you need to, if you read the book from beginning to end, 00:02:57.500 --> 00:03:00.519 you'll have a bit of a sense as to why this is an underwhelming text. 00:03:01.979 --> 00:03:05.519 It is describing the problem of envy and rivalry. 00:03:05.939 --> 00:03:08.219 It's describing the problems of pride. 00:03:08.839 --> 00:03:17.099 There's this wonderful text that encourages us to try to deal with these things in a way which is more humble. 00:03:17.099 --> 00:03:20.519 There's this, well, I'm going to return to it in a moment. 00:03:20.659 --> 00:03:27.979 There's this very, very powerful, beautiful, poetic message of how God, the Son of God, 00:03:28.120 --> 00:03:36.439 seeing human need, didn't grasp or hold on to the advantages he had in heaven as God, the Son of God, 00:03:36.780 --> 00:03:41.799 in perfect fellowship with the Father and the Holy Spirit and the adoration of angels. 00:03:41.800 --> 00:03:47.060 But setting all of that aside, but remaining God, he takes into himself our human nature. 00:03:47.880 --> 00:03:49.560 And he does this to serve. 00:03:49.740 --> 00:03:54.320 And his posture as a servant includes like a working class, lower working class life. 00:03:54.540 --> 00:04:02.300 And his posture of emptying and service goes all the way to him dying a very, very shameful death upon the cross. 00:04:02.300 --> 00:04:11.640 And then the Father's great exalting of him so that the name of the Lord Jesus Christ is the highest name. 00:04:12.260 --> 00:04:18.460 And then it goes right from that into this sort of a bit of a shocking text where it says to us 00:04:18.460 --> 00:04:24.100 that we are to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. 00:04:24.240 --> 00:04:29.100 As if there's something that we have to do 100% of all of that work to be made right with God. 00:04:29.100 --> 00:04:34.200 And then there's this like almost like a whiplash where all of a sudden then God says, 00:04:34.340 --> 00:04:37.720 but just remember that all of the work and all of the willing comes from me. 00:04:38.040 --> 00:04:39.500 And now we have a word. 00:04:39.600 --> 00:04:43.600 And in our text, it goes, it doesn't have it, but it should say now. 00:04:43.920 --> 00:04:47.100 And so now you're sort of ready 00:08:12.379 Like a good example, getting outside of the Christian world, like for very devout Muslims, like there'd be things like because you want to be like Muhammad, you don't shave your mustache and you let your beard grow long. 00:08:12.459 --> 00:08:18.240 Like another thing would be for a very devout Muslim that you have pants, which are a bit short because that's how Muhammad did it. is going to, and I'm going to talk about it more in a moment, 00:08:27.160 --> 00:08:35.800 that the only way that we can be made right with God is by what God has done to make us right with himself grumbling, which if you think about it for a second, should give us a little tiny bit of an indication that there's something more going on with it. 00:10:47.200 --> 00:10:49.300 But here's the first it was an original owner, actually, that we bought it from. 00:11:13.539 --> 00:11:21.099 And it's sort of a corner lot that, like this side of the corner, so it has like a pie-shaped backyard. 00:11:21.719 --> 00:11:32.459 And one of the things that we noticed, and you couldn't help but not notice it when we looked at the house, is that off to the side, there was about 30 or 40 feet really old cedar hedge. 00:11:32.899 --> 00:11:35.599 Really high, really old, and it broke up the yard. 00:11:36.240 --> 00:11:42.699 The only thing we could gather was that we guessed, and then we sort of figured, we ended up hearing later on that that was probably the case, 00:11:42.700 --> 00:11:52.940 that he had some things that he stored there, and he built the cedar, had planted the cedar hedge so that he could plant, put his RV or his trailers or his other stuff into this corner, 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:54.660 and it would be out of view from the rest of the yard. 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:56.800 But we didn't want to have anything like that. 00:11:56.840 --> 00:11:58.320 We wanted to have the full use of our yard. 00:11:58.640 --> 00:12:01.280 So we had to get rid of the cedar hedge. 00:12:01.279 --> 00:12:06.659 Now, if you're at all like me, or if I'm like most of you, I have more time than money. 00:12:07.379 --> 00:12:08.939 And so we didn't hire anybody. 00:12:09.519 --> 00:12:11.379 First of all, we cut down the hedge. 00:12:11.500 --> 00:12:17.740 But then, you just can't cut down the hedge, because then you have all these big pieces of wood sticking up about days of back-breaking work with a pickaxe and some other things and shovels to one by one go throughout that entire length, 00:12:36.220 --> 00:12:41.920 dig down around the roots, and dig out the 00:13:49.259 Now, it's going to be really hard. 00:13:49.439 --> 00:13:50.480 Like, what is grumbling? 00:13:51.159 --> 00:13:56.419 And to try to get into what grumbling is, it's going to probably be very hard to think about yourself at first. 00:13:56.419 --> 00:14:06.759 So think of a situation where either a friend of yours grumbles, where you've been the boss, or you've been the manager, you've been the supervisor, you've been the dad, or the mom, or the parent, or whatever. 00:14:07.219 --> 00:14:08.620 Because that would be the dad or the mom. 00:14:09.759 --> 00:14:14.199 And your kids are grumbling, you know, your adult kids are grumbling, or other people are grumbling. 00:14:14.200 --> 00:14:17.900 And what you notice is this. 00:14:18.520 --> 00:14:21.400 First of all, grumbling and disputing. 00:14:21.920 --> 00:14:26.560 The word for disputing in the original language has two senses, depending on the context. 00:14:26.820 --> 00:14:29.840 One is a positive sense, and the other one is a bad sense. 00:14:30.379 --> 00:14:34.420 The positive sense is that there's just sometimes you need to get into a discussion with somebody. 00:14:34.520 --> 00:14:38.379 You need to set forth your case because something's been done wrong. 00:14:38.700 --> 00:14:42.379 But in a negative sense, it's really describing something like being quarrelsome. 00:14:42.379 --> 00:14:51.039 And another way to look at it is grumbling is the outer, and this quarrelsome aspect is the inside aspect. 00:14:52.179 --> 00:15:02.340 What it's really talking about is that there's this aspect of us which is self-righteous, self-centered, proud thinking. 00:15:03.519 --> 00:15:06.720 Like, think about other people's grumbling for a moment, okay? 00:15:06.720 --> 00:15:15.480 And, you know, they grumble and they send you an email or they give you a phone call or they take you aside. 00:15:16.340 --> 00:15:20.200 They don't assume goodwill on me. 00:15:21.240 --> 00:15:27.480 They don't think that they know everything that needs to be known. 00:15:27.600 --> 00:15:33.560 They don't actually ever think that there's more to the situation than they realize.
