coronation of David. 00:03:26.719 --> 00:03:36.120 And as I was preparing and studying for this psalm, it was a blessing to me to remember some truths about David. 00:03:36.219 --> 00:03:38.759 And what I want to do is I want to share some of those truths. 00:03:38.759 --> 00:03:49.280 It was just a quick summary of some of the things that David experienced leading up to this moment in time when he was crowned king. 00:03:51.219 --> 00:03:54.139 There's a lot we can see in the scriptures about David. 00:03:54.139 --> 00:03:58.079 And certainly don't want to hit all of those truths, but we want to hit a few. 00:03:58.500 --> 00:04:04.239 You know, when David was young, we'd learn in the scriptures that he was tending the sheep. 00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:09.400 It's always been odd to me to think that David would tend the sheep. 00:04:09.580 --> 00:04:12.580 In my mind in that day, that was the role of a servant. 00:04:12.760 --> 00:04:14.100 And yet he is a son. 00:04:15.340 --> 00:04:19.480 He was the youngest of eight sons of his father. 00:04:20.540 --> 00:04:23.439 The other sons were trained in war and battle. 00:04:23.759 --> 00:04:30.400 And yet David, for some reason, was sent into the wilderness with all the sheep to take care of the sheep. 00:04:30.399 --> 00:04:34.599 Now, God had a plan, but honestly, I don't know what his father thought. 00:04:34.719 --> 00:04:38.620 I don't know if there was some friction between him and his father. 00:04:38.739 --> 00:04:41.199 I don't know what they thought of David. 00:04:41.439 --> 00:04:42.939 He was certainly young still. 00:04:43.779 --> 00:04:50.659 And yet I believe that when he was in the quietness of the wilderness with the sheep and pretty much alone, 00:04:50.660 --> 00:04:56.040 he would play songs. 00:04:56.180 --> 00:04:58.439 He would sing songs. 00:04:58.560 --> 00:05:00.580 He would worship God. 00:05:00.580 --> 00:05:07.520 I can only imagine looking up and seeing the starry sky and just being in awe of God. 00:05:07.720 --> 00:05:13.480 We learn from David as he talks about that time that in keeping the sheep, 00:05:13.580 --> 00:05:18.980 on occasion there would be animals, a bear, a lion, he speaks of both, 00:05:18.980 --> 00:05:21.700 that would come and attack the flock. 00:05:21.700 --> 00:05:28.480 And we're told in the scriptures that David would pursue the sheep that got taken. 00:05:29.740 --> 00:05:35.439 And David shares that on more than one occasion, God gave him extraordinary strength 00:05:35.439 --> 00:05:40.100 and incredible courage to go after those sheep. 00:05:40.660 --> 00:05:46.660 And he saw the powerful hand of God in those moments deliver the sheep through him. 00:05:46.660 --> 00:05:55.320 And we see as we continue to walk toward the time when he is confronting Goliath, 00:05:55.420 --> 00:05:58.260 we see that incredible courage displayed there as well. 00:05:59.260 --> 00:06:03.040 Well, so David seemed to have friction between himself and his brothers. 00:06:03.220 --> 00:06:09.460 He was asked by his father to take food to the battlefield when they were encamped against the Philistine army. 00:06:09.459 --> 00:06:14.299 And he went in honor of his father to take the food. 00:06:14.379 --> 00:06:15.879 And the brothers were like, what are you doing here? 00:06:16.060 --> 00:06:17.279 Why are you even here? 00:06:17.479 --> 00:06:18.500 You're just a shepherd. 00:06:18.680 --> 00:06:19.899 You don't deserve to be here. 00:06:20.379 --> 00:06:22.019 What gives you the right to come? 00:06:22.099 --> 00:06:23.659 Well, Dad asked me to bring this to you. 00:06:23.759 --> 00:06:24.180 Oh, okay. 00:06:24.279 --> 00:06:24.680 Go home. 00:06:25.620 --> 00:06:28.819 There seemed to be some odds between he and his brother. 00:06:29.879 --> 00:06:34.079 What we see in the encounter with Goliath is amazing to me. 00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:38.620 And I think we've all been amazed that a boy could have that courage. 00:06:39.099 --> 00:06:44.859 When no other warrior in the camp of Israel had courage to stand against Goliath, 00:06:45.300 --> 00:06:49.719 David had experienced the powerful presence of God, 00:06:49.839 --> 00:06:55.279 had experienced the powerful hand of God through him as he fought against the lions, 00:06:55.719 --> 00:06:59.139 as he fought against the bears, as he protected the flock. 00:06:59.139 --> 00:07:02.259 And he makes a statement about that time. 00:07:02.419 --> 00:07:08.639 Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that would dare defy God? 00:07:09.899 --> 00:07:13.819 Who would dishonor him and God's people? 00:07:14.439 --> 00:07:17.860 And there is a boldness that rises up within David. 00:07:18.139 --> 00:07:22.019 We see a character in David that has been changed by God. 00:07:23.060 --> 00:07:25.719 You know, I believe that's what happens with us. 00:07:25.719 --> 00:07:28.459 The more we're in the presence of God, the more we're changed. 00:07:29.139 --> 00:07:33.099 And I think David was one that was familiar with worship, 00:07:33.379 --> 00:07:36.000 and he was familiar with the presence of God. 00:07:36.079 --> 00:07:37.639 And so with that courage, he says, 00:07:38.019 --> 00:07:38.819 Who are you? 00:07:38.919 --> 00:07:41.839 This day I will feed you to the birds of the air. 00:07:41.939 --> 00:07:45.060 Where does that courage come from if it's not from God? 00:07:46.719 --> 00:07:51.120 And David confronts Goliath, and sure enough, we know the story how Goliath is slain. 00:07:51.659 --> 00:07:54.539 He cuts his head off and brings the head back into the camp, 00:07:54.539 --> 00:07:56.939 and it gives courage to all of Israel. 00:07:56.939 --> 00:08:04.459 You know, in those days, Saul, the king, had turned away from honoring God, 00:08:04.519 --> 00:08:06.219 and he tried to build his own kingdom. 00:08:06.939 --> 00:08:13.240 He honored himself and not God, and so God took the kingdom from the hand of Saul, 00:08:13.480 --> 00:08:19.480 and God sent Samuel to David to anoint him as the next king. 00:08:19.480 --> 00:08:26.000 And so he goes to David's father's house, Jesse, and he says, 00:08:26.080 --> 00:08:26.960 Where are your sons? 00:08:27.220 --> 00:08:28.680 The Lord has sent me here. 00:08:29.340 --> 00:08:31.640 And he calls his sons, and guess who's left out? 00:08:33.879 --> 00:08:35.659 Again, there's something there. 00:08:35.759 --> 00:08:37.639 It's hard to understand exactly. 00:08:38.139 --> 00:08:42.060 The scriptures don't really give us enough fact to understand what's going on there. 00:08:42.059 --> 00:08:48.139 But he was not even called when this honored guest, the spiritual leader of the nation, 00:08:48.279 --> 00:08:51.219 showed up at their front door, so to speak. 00:08:52.239 --> 00:08:57.219 And yet he looks, and God says, Not him, not him, not him, not him, not him, not him. 00:08:57.279 --> 00:08:58.919 Do you have any other sons? 00:08:59.939 --> 00:09:01.419 Well, yeah, I do, but he's just a shepherd. 00:09:01.519 --> 00:09:02.239 He's out in the field. 00:09:02.579 --> 00:09:03.539 He's not a warrior. 00:09:03.799 --> 00:09:05.279 I mean, surely you can't. 00:09:05.279 --> 00:09:08.939 We will not sit down until you go get him. 00:09:09.500 --> 00:09:10.839 And he goes and gets him. 00:09:10.959 --> 00:09:11.759 David arrives. 00:09:12.019 --> 00:09:12.620 And what does he do? 00:09:12.699 --> 00:09:14.500 He said, God says to him, That's the one. 00:09:15.399 --> 00:09:15.919 That's the one. 00:09:16.100 --> 00:09:18.759 Anoint him as king. 00:09:23.019 --> 00:09:23.819 Let me ask this. 00:09:23.879 --> 00:09:24.899 What did y'all do? 00:09:25.199 --> 00:09:26.559 What were y'all doing 10 years ago? 00:09:29.299 --> 00:09:30.100 12 years ago? 00:09:31.600 --> 00:09:32.379 Y'all remember? 00:09:35.279 --> 00:09:45.399 Isn't it interesting that Samuel anoints him as king, and yet he doesn't experience a coronation 00:09:45.399 --> 00:09:48.759 for years and years and years? 00:09:49.120 --> 00:09:50.459 Do you think he was puzzled? 00:09:51.059 --> 00:09:52.579 Samuel, did you make a mistake? 00:09:52.720 --> 00:09:53.839 I mean, Saul's the king. 00:09:54.519 --> 00:09:55.500 Why did you anoint me? 00:09:55.579 --> 00:09:56.879 Why didn't you wait till after Saul? 00:09:56.939 --> 00:10:00.299 There's probably a lot of questions, but you don't question Samuel. 00:10:00.759 --> 00:10:02.079 My point is this. 00:10:02.080 --> 00:10:05.800 Surely David struggled to understand, Wait a minute. 00:10:06.220 --> 00:10:07.340 What happened here? 00:10:08.480 --> 00:10:11.379 Am I to be king, and why am I not king now? 00:10:11.660 --> 00:10:14.600 And then Saul begins to attack David. 00:10:15.900 --> 00:10:20.460 Saul throws a spear at him twice to kill him, and he avoids the spear, and he heads out. 00:10:21.560 --> 00:10:29.960 David leaves the presence of Saul, and he goes out away from Saul to get some space. 00:10:29.960 --> 00:10:30.759 And what does Saul do? 00:10:30.820 --> 00:10:36.019 He takes the army and chases David to kill him, because he heard that David had been anointed 00:10:36.019 --> 00:10:36.620 by Samuel. 00:10:40.100 --> 00:10:46.120 And so David had the chance more than once to kill Saul. 00:10:46.519 --> 00:10:51.200 You remember the story that they were hiding in the cave when Saul and his army came, and 00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:53.580 Saul walks into the cave to relieve himself. 00:10:53.879 --> 00:10:54.960 And what does David do? 00:10:55.060 --> 00:10:56.160 The guys are, Get him! 00:10:56.280 --> 00:10:56.560 Get him! 00:10:56.580 --> 00:10:57.139 You got a chance! 00:10:57.240 --> 00:10:57.700 Get him now! 00:10:57.700 --> 00:11:02.280 Now, and David takes his knife and cuts the robe and holds the piece in his hand. 00:11:02.500 --> 00:11:03.620 Saul walks outside. 00:11:04.220 --> 00:11:13.100 David walks out of the cave and says, Saul, king, Lord, why do you chase after me to kill 00:11:13.100 --> 00:11:13.360 me? 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:18.220 And he holds up the piece of the garment that he cut off, and he says, look, this is from 00:11:18.220 --> 00:11:18.840 your garment. 00:11:18.840 --> 00:11:21.220 God delivered you into my hand. 00:11:21.220 --> 00:11:26.940 But I will not raise my hand against you, because you are the Lord's anointed. 00:11:27.420 --> 00:11:30.759 How many years did this go on? 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:33.420 How many years did Saul pursue him? 00:11:33.800 --> 00:11:40.040 We know the other time that God caused a hard sleep to fall on all of the army of Israel, 00:11:40.039 --> 00:11:43.659 and David and his chief go right into the camp. 00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:50.159 They take the spear and the water jug, I think it was, from the head of the king. 00:11:50.240 --> 00:11:53.459 It was sitting on the ground, and they go up the hill, and they begin to call to him, 00:11:54.419 --> 00:11:58.039 Lord, Saul, why do you come after me? 00:11:58.079 --> 00:11:59.079 I'm just a dog. 00:11:59.080 --> 00:12:04.900 And he holds it up, and he said, see, God delivered you again into my hand, but I will 00:12:04.900 --> 00:12:06.480 not do harm to God's anointed. 00:12:08.740 --> 00:12:15.620 All that time, he waited and waited and waited and waited for God's timing. 00:12:16.460 --> 00:12:23.040 He did not push his own timing to try to make himself king, though he knew that he had been 00:12:23.040 --> 00:12:28.040 anointed, and he knew that the Spirit of God had come upon him, which is what the Scripture 00:12:28.040 --> 00:12:28.580 declares. 00:12:29.100 --> 00:12:37.540 And here we are in Psalm 21, and I believe this is the moment of the coronation of David. 00:12:37.940 --> 00:12:42.060 This would mean that Saul is no longer on the scene. 00:12:42.160 --> 00:12:43.360 He was killed in battle. 00:12:45.639 --> 00:12:50.180 And then David comes to be crowned as king. 00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:56.280 You know, the psalm, the women sang a song at one point when Saul was still alive and said, 00:12:56.279 --> 00:12:59.639 Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands. 00:13:00.759 --> 00:13:02.379 David was a warrior. 00:13:02.679 --> 00:13:08.639 God had made him a warrior to fight against the enemies of God, the enemies of the people. 00:13:08.639 --> 00:13:16.379 And here we are in the first, well, I would say this, the psalm has three different sections 00:13:16.379 --> 00:13:18.960 this morning, and we're going to look at all three. 00:13:18.960 --> 00:13:23.139 And so really, there's three main points that we want to see this morning. 00:13:23.280 --> 00:13:26.019 The first section is verses one through seven. 00:13:26.759 --> 00:13:31.460 And the point I want you to see is that the king is blessed by God. 00:13:31.860 --> 00:13:35.379 The king is blessed by God. 00:13:35.379 --> 00:13:38.460 Let's read this section again, one through seven. 00:13:38.559 --> 00:13:41.759 I'll read it if you have your scriptures open, which I hope you do. 00:13:41.860 --> 00:13:45.200 Why don't you read along as I share here. 00:13:45.480 --> 00:13:48.340 Oh, Lord, in your strength, the king rejoices. 00:13:48.419 --> 00:13:49.200 Can you hear David? 00:13:50.259 --> 00:13:52.519 At this moment, he's worshiping God. 00:13:53.259 --> 00:14:00.899 He's waited a long time for the moment when God would actually place him as king of the nation. 00:14:00.899 --> 00:14:05.639 And here he says, oh, Lord, in your strength, the king rejoices. 00:14:06.519 --> 00:14:09.600 And in your salvation, how greatly he exalts. 00:14:10.019 --> 00:14:11.459 What is it to rejoice? 00:14:11.620 --> 00:14:12.620 What is rejoicing? 00:14:14.379 --> 00:14:16.740 Rejoicing is an overflow of joy. 00:14:17.819 --> 00:14:21.240 I want you to notice what David says here. 00:14:21.600 --> 00:14:24.159 It says, my joy is because of what you've done. 00:14:24.459 --> 00:14:26.960 My joy is because I stand in your strength. 00:14:27.240 --> 00:14:29.360 My joy is because of your salvation. 00:14:29.360 --> 00:14:32.379 Do you see the two phrases there in the first verse? 00:14:33.759 --> 00:14:39.460 In your strength, in your salvation, these are the things that bring me joy. 00:14:40.980 --> 00:14:43.120 Lord, I rest in you. 00:14:43.600 --> 00:14:47.879 Do you think that he's lived that over the last several years prior to this time? 00:14:49.180 --> 00:14:57.440 As he's watched time and time again, God deliver him from the hand of Saul and from other enemies. 00:14:57.440 --> 00:15:03.820 He sees and he knows that his strength is found not in himself, but in God. 00:15:04.400 --> 00:15:05.920 It's a 00:15:44.360 --> 00:15:49.680 You know, the heart's desire of David is that he would know and honor and love and be in the presence of God. 00:15:50.379 --> 00:15:52.200 A man after God's own heart. 00:15:52.519 --> 00:15:57.159 If he truly is a man after God's own heart, what is it that brings him joy? 00:15:57.480 --> 00:15:59.840 What is it that fulfills him and satisfies him? 00:16:00.039 --> 00:16:00.560 It's God. 00:16:01.840 --> 00:16:08.779 When he knows and understands and experiences God, then his great satisfaction. 00:16:08.779 --> 00:16:11.199 And he relays that here. 00:16:12.079 --> 00:16:17.579 You have given him his heart's desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. 00:16:20.319 --> 00:16:24.220 You see the blessings of God that David has received? 00:16:25.220 --> 00:16:28.019 And he goes on and on and on and on. 00:16:28.019 --> 00:16:39.559 So I ask this, what blessings, as David shares this psalm with the people, what blessings of God do we see? 00:16:39.679 --> 00:16:41.539 What blessings are attributed to God? 00:16:41.799 --> 00:16:46.340 And what blessings does he attribute to himself and his own actions? 00:16:47.120 --> 00:16:49.240 You know, in this psalm, it's all about what God does. 00:16:49.299 --> 00:16:49.879 Do you see it? 00:16:50.579 --> 00:16:56.120 Verse 1, O Lord, I'm full of joy because of your strength and your salvation. 00:16:56.120 --> 00:16:58.379 You have given, verse 2. 00:16:58.659 --> 00:17:01.360 You meet him with rich blessings, verse 3. 00:17:01.700 --> 00:17:05.839 You set a crown, a fine goal upon the king's head. 00:17:06.259 --> 00:17:08.619 He asked life of you and you gave life. 00:17:08.740 --> 00:17:10.000 You gave the king life. 00:17:10.299 --> 00:17:11.900 Do you see what he's doing? 00:17:12.000 --> 00:17:17.420 He's worshiping and he's praising the God who has blessed him beyond measure. 00:17:18.519 --> 00:17:24.480 Do you think when he was a boy that he ever dreamed that there would be a day when the crown would be placed on his head? 00:17:24.480 --> 00:17:27.240 Do you think his dad ever thought that? 00:17:27.299 --> 00:17:28.860 Do you think his brothers ever thought that? 00:17:29.460 --> 00:17:32.319 In his wildest imagination, he could have never thought that. 00:17:33.880 --> 00:17:37.079 And yet, here he is by the power and the plan of God. saying, look what I've done? 00:17:59.720 --> 00:18:01.319 Look how great I am. 00:18:01.679 --> 00:18:03.399 Look at how I've defeated my enemies. 00:18:03.619 --> 00:18:05.059 He doesn't say anything to that. 00:18:05.059 --> 00:18:06.240 You know what he says to the people? 00:18:06.519 --> 00:18:08.639 People, do you realize this is all God? 00:18:10.059 --> 00:18:12.000 This has nothing to do with me. 00:18:12.200 --> 00:18:13.639 It has all to do with God. 00:18:13.740 --> 00:18:15.559 And look what he's done, don't you? 00:18:15.859 --> 00:18:22.319 Aren't you amazed at what God has done that he would so do this in my life? 00:18:23.460 --> 00:18:24.359 It goes on to say, 00:18:24.500 --> 00:18:27.559 Splendor and majesty you've bestowed upon him. 00:18:27.559 --> 00:18:37.759 You know, it is, there is a measure of splendor and majesty when an Israelite is crowned the king. 00:18:38.279 --> 00:18:40.679 The protector and provider of the people. 00:18:41.639 --> 00:18:48.740 And certainly he's experiencing that, but he's not letting that grab his heart like Saul did. 00:18:48.740 --> 00:18:57.940 You know, if we read the scriptures, we come to understand that
