such an encouragement that it's him because Peter was the bombastic one. 00:03:30.300 --> 00:03:32.759 Sometimes he got things spectacularly right. 00:03:33.379 --> 00:03:37.439 When Jesus asks his disciples, who do you say I am? 00:03:37.439 --> 00:03:42.740 And Peter says, you are the Messiah, son of the living God. 00:03:43.560 --> 00:03:47.719 And Jesus says, God the Father gave you those words. 00:03:49.840 --> 00:03:50.400 Fantastic. 00:03:51.360 --> 00:03:55.920 Then there were times when Peter got things wrong. 00:03:55.919 --> 00:04:03.979 When Jesus describes the events of his death that are to come and his resurrection, 00:04:04.679 --> 00:04:07.819 Peter's the one who blurts out, no, surely, no, no, no. 00:04:08.079 --> 00:04:08.979 Not you, Jesus. 00:04:09.099 --> 00:04:11.899 These terrible things, they don't have to happen to you. 00:04:12.719 --> 00:04:18.060 And he gets a rebuke from Jesus who says, get behind me, Satan. 00:04:18.060 --> 00:04:23.079 Then you have in mind the things of men and not the things of God. 00:04:23.079 --> 00:04:29.319 Well, Peter moves past those failures. 00:04:29.459 --> 00:04:30.959 We can see that in his letter. And it's so encouraging to us to see Peter's transformation, hold it here in this letter, 00:04:58.199 --> 00:05:02.980 and think, you know, even people like us who get bogged down in our failures, the Hebrew church under Roman rule, 00:05:40.639 --> 00:05:46.279 and he knows they are suffering, not just suffering, but they are persecuted. 00:05:46.839 --> 00:05:51.060 But he also knows who they are in Christ. 00:05:52.620 --> 00:05:54.519 He knows they follow Christ. 00:05:54.860 --> 00:05:58.319 He spent the beginning of the letter telling them how wonderful that is, 00:05:58.419 --> 00:06:00.899 encouraging them that they are God's elect, 00:06:00.899 --> 00:06:06.139 shown in everlasting mercy through Christ's death and resurrection. 00:06:06.939 --> 00:06:11.039 There are those who love Christ, even though they haven't seen him. 00:06:11.259 --> 00:06:16.219 He reminds them they're going through trials, but these will serve a purpose, 00:06:16.899 --> 00:06:20.039 proving their faith and glorifying God. 00:06:20.040 --> 00:06:24.720 They're a people of inexpressible joy. 00:06:26.400 --> 00:06:32.840 Inexpressible joy because God's mercy has surpassed understanding. his letter, he's warning us of the danger of our own evil desires. 00:07:56.500 --> 00:07:58.460 And Peter has been there. 00:07:59.480 --> 00:08:01.460 He knows how bad it can get. 00:08:02.080 --> 00:08:07.139 In the passion of pride, he told Jesus he wouldn't have to suffer. 00:08:07.139 --> 00:08:14.000 In the passion of self-pity, he denied knowing Jesus three times so that he wouldn't be took years for these deeply insecure people to stop. 00:14:11.680 --> 00:14:15.180 Now they call her aside in the office, 00:14:15.180 --> 00:14:20.480 and they get into long conversations over the soldiers. 00:18:07.960 --> 00:18:10.180 Well, Jesus not only rejects this option, 00:18:10.180 --> 00:18:11.900 but he reverses it, 00:18:12.779 --> 00:18:16.000 showing that fighting for Christ
