Imagine that you are watching me in a Starbucks or a Tim Hortons or a Bridgehead 00:01:26.299 --> 00:01:35.899 or some other coffee place, and a young woman of color or a young First Nations person says something 00:01:35.899 --> 00:01:41.859 about what's going on in our culture or something that's happened in history. And imagine for a moment 00:01:41.859 --> 00:01:49.239 that I just put my finger up like this and said, I think you're wrong, and corrected the young woman of 00:01:49.239 --> 00:01:54.879 color or the young First Nations woman. And then not only said, I think you're wrong, but began to tell her 00:01:54.879 --> 00:02:06.060 why I think she's wrong. Now, that would cause a lot of tension for most Canadians, not all Canadians, 00:02:06.179 --> 00:02:13.419 but for many Canadians. In fact, if I was to tell you that I was going to do a video, I'm obviously an old 00:02:13.419 --> 00:02:23.259 white guy, and I was going to do a video on truth and reconciliation, or about some aspects of the 00:02:23.259 --> 00:02:29.139 experience of African Americans in Canada. In fact, if I was to announce that I'd just done a video like 00:02:29.139 --> 00:02:33.500 this and that I was going to be releasing it on Monday, there would be a lot of tension in the 00:02:33.500 --> 00:02:37.639 congregation. And I would have a lot of people tell me I shouldn't do it. 00:02:37.639 --> 00:02:46.599 The fact of the matter is that the gatekeepers of our culture 00:02:46.599 --> 00:02:55.819 say that basically certain types of conversation are protected and are, in a sense, to use the 00:02:55.819 --> 00:03:01.919 postmodern language, are privileged. And for an old white guy like me to say something to correct 00:03:01.919 --> 00:03:08.579 certain types of classes of person would, in fact, be a great evil. In fact, there's the main theory, 00:03:08.699 --> 00:03:13.279 which is taught in universities, critical theory, with all of its different offspring of critical 00:03:13.279 --> 00:03:19.279 race theory, critical theory around gender and sexuality, very specifically says that guys like 00:03:19.279 --> 00:03:27.159 me can't speak into certain types of issues. There was a very interesting columnist this week 00:03:27.159 --> 00:03:35.599 who had a line in his column that when people no longer believe in the truth, all that's left 00:03:35.599 --> 00:03:45.439 is fists, is fighting and punching and grasping for power. 00:03:47.620 --> 00:03:52.960 Now, I say this because it's a bit of a, it creates some tension, and you can well imagine how much 00:03:52.960 --> 00:03:56.939 tension you would feel if I said I was going to release a video or if you saw me talking. 00:03:56.939 --> 00:04:03.120 Yet at the same time, we know that there's a lot of people in our culture who are very 00:04:03.120 --> 00:04:09.020 uncomfortable with how many of the, there's things going on in our, things going on in our culture, 00:04:09.199 --> 00:04:14.360 concerned to truth. It does seem as if, for a significant part of our culture, there no longer 00:04:14.360 --> 00:04:20.860 is a concern for the truth. In a sense, critical theory has led to no longer being able to think 00:04:20.860 --> 00:04:21.460 critically. 00:04:25.460 --> 00:04:32.720 And to be woke, increasingly looks like you go to sleep, rather than being awakened. 00:04:35.780 --> 00:04:40.759 It's very interesting if you have a conversation with non-Christians and they start to discover 00:04:40.759 --> 00:04:44.879 that you don't necessarily agree with how our culture goes, and all of a sudden, 00:04:44.879 --> 00:04:51.680 if they feel safe, they begin to talk, because we know how much we could be jumped on for just 00:04:51.680 --> 00:04:57.839 considering some of these particular issues. So for those of you who I have not so offended 00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:03.860 that if you're watching online, you've clicked the off button, and you're off to do something 00:05:03.860 --> 00:05:07.759 else. And for those of you who still might be steaming, but are at least willing to listen, 00:05:07.920 --> 00:05:12.719 but for others of us who acknowledge that there's some wisdom from this fellow saying that when you 00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:19.560 no longer believe in truth, all that's left is fists. It's all that's left. Very Nietzschean thought. 00:05:20.040 --> 00:05:25.360 The Bible, believe it or not, the text that we looked at today has a lot of profound wisdom to 00:05:25.360 --> 00:05:31.480 offer our culture and for us as a congregation. So if you were turning your Bibles to 2 Timothy chapter 00:05:31.480 --> 00:05:38.980 2 verses 14 and following, we're going to look at this very, very old letter. 2 Timothy chapter 2 00:05:38.980 --> 00:05:44.939 verses 14 and following. And very interesting enough, as I've shared in each of the last two 00:05:44.939 --> 00:05:48.460 weeks when we've looked at it, if you're a guest here, one of the things we do at Church of the 00:05:48.460 --> 00:05:51.960 Messiah is we preach through books of the Bible. That's how they're written. They're written as 00:05:51.960 --> 00:05:58.879 books. The Bible isn't a compendium of quotes. It has a few things like the book of Proverbs that 00:05:58.879 --> 00:06:02.120 have just sayings, but generally speaking, they're written as books. They have a beginning, 00:06:02.240 --> 00:06:07.540 they have an end, a middle, etc., and it's best to look at them that way. And this actually was 00:06:07.540 --> 00:06:13.620 originally a letter written from jail, a guy doing hard time in Rome during the height of the Roman 00:06:13.620 --> 00:06:19.160 Empire, maybe the biggest time of the Roman Empire, close to it, if not the absolute pinnacle of the 00:06:19.160 --> 00:06:25.400 Roman Empire. Nero is the emperor, and this particular fellow is in jail. And interestingly enough, he's in 00:06:25.400 --> 00:06:31.379 jail because of the truth. He's in jail because he believes something happened, actually really happened 00:06:31.379 --> 00:06:39.259 in history. And all the smart people and the powerful people and the popular people don't want that to be true. 00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:45.219 But he keeps saying it actually happened, and so as a result of that, he now finds himself in jail doing hard time. 00:06:45.699 --> 00:06:51.860 And as I've shared before, at the end of the book, he reveals that he believes that he's only going to walk out of 00:06:51.860 --> 00:06:58.240 jail, this time to go to his execution, which is in fact what happened to him. And here's, now we're sort of 00:06:58.240 --> 00:07:04.480 coming up to the, I guess we've been, we've been, this is our third look at it. going to have to confess that Christians have often, in fact, it's interestingly enough, 00:08:39.639 --> 00:08:44.399 you can't, in a sense, out-critique the Bible on this because what is the Bible actually warning you against? 00:08:44.480 --> 00:08:46.559 It's warning about Christians fighting over words. 00:08:47.539 --> 00:08:52.379 In other words, what you can say is that there's been a long history of Christians being hypocrites. 00:08:53.259 --> 00:08:54.419 They don't read their Bible. 00:08:54.519 --> 00:08:57.240 They don't read their Bible and understand that, whoa, whoa, whoa, fingers pointing back at me. 00:09:42.559 --> 00:09:48.860 But here's the big claim that's underneath this text, 00:09:49.059 --> 00:09:52.559 which is a very, very shocking thing for our culture. 00:10:02.779 --> 00:10:09.579 Some of you have heard me share a line by Spurgeon that Christianity is one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread. 00:10:09.580 --> 00:10:24.420 And I've been thinking this week that maybe we could reformulate that and say Christianity is one beggar telling another beggar where to get the red pill and urging them to take it. 00:10:24.419 --> 00:10:33.399 Now, those of you who aren't familiar with the language, it goes back to The Matrix, a sort of a culturally formative movie that was made about 20 some odd years ago. 00:10:33.399 --> 00:10:38.299 And in that, this fellow Neo is given a choice. 00:10:38.720 --> 00:10:39.699 He's given a red pill. 00:10:39.759 --> 00:10:42.600 The person holds his hand out and gives a red pill and a blue pill. 00:10:42.659 --> 00:10:46.860 And if he chooses the blue pill, then everything will just go back to normal. 00:10:46.860 --> 00:10:54.460 But what we, the viewer, understand as normal is that he's actually not living the life he thinks he lives. 00:10:54.500 --> 00:11:01.860 He's actually just in a vat being used as a battery to give energy to machines. 00:11:01.860 --> 00:11:18.080 And he can either take the blue pill and just go back to a life of pleasant illusion and delusion, or he can take the red pill and he will be freed from that delusion and illusion and has to live with the weight of understanding what the world is really like. 00:11:19.560 --> 00:11:24.600 And I understand that for most people in our culture, religion is just part of values. 00:11:24.820 --> 00:11:25.879 It's part of like a hobby. 00:11:26.039 --> 00:11:27.100 It's a type of therapy. 00:11:27.259 --> 00:11:30.560 It's something that is understood just to make you feel more comfortable. 00:11:30.559 --> 00:11:45.919 And if religion and all is just something to make you feel more comfortable, a type of therapy, something you just happen to like or enjoy, maybe for historic or family reasons, then to argue about the truth or falsity of it is just completely and utterly ridiculous. 00:11:46.099 --> 00:11:51.339 It would be like, I don't know, arguing whether crocheting is better or a needlepoint. 00:11:51.500 --> 00:11:56.159 It would be like arguing whether you should make pierogies as a family or cabbage rolls. 00:11:56.159 --> 00:12:02.879 Like to get into a big fight over that is just a sign of immaturity and untamed egos. 00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:09.439 And so for a lot of people in our culture to think that Christians would get into an argument about things is just like that. 00:12:09.500 --> 00:12:12.240 It's an argument over whether you make pierogies or cabbage rolls. 00:12:12.240 --> 00:12:23.060 But actually, the fact of the matter is, is that Christianity believes that when you receive the gospel, the offer of part of the offer of the gospel is that will you take the red pill? 00:12:23.059 --> 00:12:37.859 That, in fact, Christians believe that if you accept the gospel and begin to be formed by the gospel and the word of God, that that's actually taking the red pill, that you will begin to understand that the world is very different than you think. Christian, of the quest of being a Christian, is to begin to be formed more and more and more about the truth so that you can see and understand the world as it really is. 00:13:12.860 --> there's a very famous story in one of, in three, I think it takes place in three of the ancient biographies of Jesus. 00:13:38.700 --> 00:13:46.020 Ancient biographies, either written by eyewitnesses or written based on eyewitness testimony. 00:13:46.280 --> 00:13:52.360 When many, many, many, many, many eyewitnesses were still around and could say, no, no, that's wrong, that's wrong, we need to fix this or whatever. 00:13:52.879 --> 00:13:56.940 And in three of these ancient biographies, there's a very, very powerful story. 00:13:56.940 --> 00:14:10.060 And it's a story, some of you here will know it, where Jesus is teaching and he's in a room and some fellows have a friend who's paralyzed and they want to see if they can get Jesus to maybe heal them. 00:14:10.140 --> 00:14:12.380 But people won't get out of the way, they can't get in. 00:14:12.820 --> 00:14:16.340 And so they go up, they knock a hole in the roof, which is pretty rude. 00:14:16.460 --> 00:14:21.700 Hopefully they're all carpenters and could fix it later or whatever, however you could fix roofs back in those days. 00:14:22.120 --> 00:14:25.180 They never tell you that part of the story, but I'm sure something like that happened. 00:14:25.179 --> 00:14:29.099 And they drop the guy and they have ropes or whatever, they lower the guy in. 00:14:29.799 --> 00:14:33.559 And obviously they want Jesus to heal this guy. 00:14:33.659 --> 00:14:36.359 And Jesus makes this very, very, very shocking claim. 00:14:36.459 --> 00:14:38.719 He says, son, your sins are forgiven. 00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:50.839 Now, people back, you know, we are such, Canadians in 2021, we are such chronological snobs. 00:14:50.840 --> 00:14:59.759 We think that just because back then they didn't have TikTok or flush toilets that they were stupid. 00:15:01.259 --> 00:15:05.460 There's a very good argument to be made that using TikTok makes you stupid, by the way. 00:15:06.920 --> 00:15:10.759 Or Instagram or Facebook might lower your IQ. 00:15:10.759 --> 00:15:13.779 And that maybe a time before that they were actually smarter. 00:15:14.059 --> 00:15:15.840 But those people back then, they weren't dumb. 00:15:16.460 --> 00:15:19.500 They said the exact same thing a group of Canadians would say. 00:15:19.679 --> 00:15:24.919 If it was Tim Hortons, all of a sudden the roof came down and Jesus was there and they asked Jesus to heal the guy. 00:15:25.019 --> 00:15:26.659 And Jesus said, son, your sins are forgiven. 00:15:27.039 --> 00:15:30.220 All of them said, who can forgive sins but God alone? 00:15:32.740 --> 00:15:33.779 Talk is cheap. 00:15:33.779 --> 00:15:38.139 You know, Jesus can say whatever he wants. 00:15:38.639 --> 00:15:40.259 But they're smart people. 00:15:40.379 --> 00:15:42.399 They say, well, that's just a ridiculous thing to say. 00:15:42.480 --> 00:15:43.539 So what does Jesus say to them? 00:15:43.639 --> 00:15:46.839 Jesus says to them, well, listen, what is easier for me to say? 00:15:46.980 --> 00:15:49.199 Son, rise up and be healed? 00:15:49.379 --> 00:15:50.879 Or son, your sins are forgiven? 00:15:50.980 --> 00:15:51.480 What's easier? 00:15:51.559 --> 00:15:56.579 Well, of course, you can't just have somebody just perform a miracle. 00:15:56.779 --> 00:16:00.480 All of a sudden, a man like Jesus just says something. 00:16:00.480 --> 00:16:07.159 And what goes on inside the body is that if there's like nerve endings or whatever that have been broken or blocked, 00:16:07.259 --> 00:16:10.080 or there's a blockage that those in a sense are removed, 00:16:10.240 --> 00:16:14.920 that if there's things that aren't connected, that there's an act of creation that will join nerves, 00:16:15.100 --> 00:16:20.039 that the muscles that have atrophied will all of a sudden be firm enough that they could walk, 00:16:20.139 --> 00:16:21.340 that this is like a mighty thing. 00:16:21.420 --> 00:16:26.600 If I just speak that and all of a sudden these acts of creation and negation that create health, 00:16:26.600 --> 00:16:29.580 if that just comes, that's impossible. 00:16:29.580 --> 00:16:36.020 And so Jesus says to show that I have the authority to forgive sins, 00:16:36.020 --> 00:16:39.259 the implication is I'm going to heal this guy, 00:16:39.340 --> 00:16:41.240 but he says to show that I have the authority to do this, 00:16:41.639 --> 00:16:42.800 son, rise up and walk. 00:16:43.720 --> 00:16:47.780 And three of the ancient biographies say that that's exactly what happened to the young man. 00:16:49.300 --> 00:16:51.040 You see, the fact of the matter is, 00:16:51.080 --> 00:16:53.879 is that in the history of religion and spirituality, 00:16:54.220 --> 00:16:55.840 all sorts of claims are made. 00:16:55.840 --> 00:16:58.300 But the fact of the matter is, 00:16:58.360 --> 00:17:00.700 is that when you just respond to me that, George, 00:17:00.759 --> 00:17:04.180 to make this claim that to become a Christian is to receive the red pill, 00:17:04.220 --> 00:17:05.299 that's just you talking. 00:17:05.700 --> 00:17:07.640 That's because you're used to the fact that, 00:17:08.059 --> 00:17:23.419 But that's one of the reasons why out of all of the religions and the spiritualities that exist in the world, 00:17:23.519 --> 00:17:27.479 the historic and great ones that bespoke and rituals, good morals, good advice. 00:17:35.839 --> 00:17:36.939 It means good news. 00:17:36.940 --> 00:17:41.960 And the good news is that God has actually done something in history in such a way 00:17:41.960 --> 00:17:45.720 that you can examine it and see whether or not it's possible to be true. 00:17:47.500 --> 00:17:50.480 Because, you see, that's exactly the claim that's made by Jesus. --> 00:18:13.679 and he referred to it as the Old Testament, 00:18:13.859 --> 00:18:15.419 and I joke that that's like, 00:18:15.740 --> 00:18:17.459 that's what you do if you want to be friends. 00:18:18.339 --> 00:18:19.679 I use the Jewish term, 00:18:19.719 --> 00:18:21.039 and he uses the Christian term, 00:18:21.079 --> 00:18:22.479 and we're both talking about the same book. 00:18:22.679 --> 00:18:25.379 But, you know, 00:18:25.819 --> 00:18:29.319 but it's out of these writings that human rights have developed. 00:18:29.459 --> 00:18:31.159 It's out of these writings
