You know, to really concentrate 00:00:30.480 --> 00:00:36.159 upon what the Lord would have for you. You know, because we need to keep in mind one thing, that 00:00:36.159 --> 00:00:45.659 church is not for our entertainment. There's things we can feel, get our attention and grab a hold of 00:00:45.659 --> 00:00:52.840 us and even touch us, but you know, it's not there about us, it's about Him. And we ought to focus our 00:00:52.840 --> 00:00:58.160 things on that. I appreciate Matt playing this morning. And, but when you have those opportunities, 00:00:58.160 --> 00:01:03.900 I just want to encourage you to be thinking in that line instead of just kind of listening along, 00:01:03.960 --> 00:01:11.960 be thinking, Lord, how are you going to prepare me through this? And that's the reason Jesus had spent much time as they made their 00:01:42.159 --> 00:01:49.280 way to the garden here, as we see in John 15. You know, he knew there'd be one that would soon betray 00:01:49.280 --> 00:01:58.620 him. And that it'd be one that was known by the other 11. And that he understood the essential nature 00:01:58.620 --> 00:02:10.219 of this time. And he understood the need to comprehend that necessity of abiding in him, the true vine. 00:02:10.219 --> 00:02:16.020 You know, because the disciples were about ready to go through a very difficult, what you might say, 00:02:16.139 --> 00:02:21.800 pruning process. God was going to put them through some things that was going to challenge them in a 00:02:21.800 --> 00:02:28.180 great way. Hey, Darren, can you turn that, my mic down just a touch? And I want you to understand that even as we go through a pruning process in our 00:02:34.419 --> 00:02:42.479 life, that God prepares us for it. You know, remember Jesus, last week we talked, Jesus talked 00:02:42.479 --> 00:02:48.519 about a friend tells you what's going to happen. You know what? When you're connected to the vine, 00:02:48.979 --> 00:02:55.399 connected to Jesus Christ, he tells you that there's going to be some pruning process happen in your life. 00:02:56.219 --> 00:03:00.459 You know, he doesn't promise you everything's always going to be great. But what he does say, 00:03:00.460 --> 00:03:07.040 it's for your good, it's for your benefit, it's for his glory. You know, I want you to understand that 00:03:07.040 --> 00:03:14.780 it's not always easy, but it is what the master says is best to produce fruit. You know, because 00:03:14.780 --> 00:03:19.620 one of the things I think we have a problem with in society, especially amongst believers today, 00:03:19.780 --> 00:03:28.159 we all think, what is in it for me? You know what? A branch on the vine isn't about how bushy it can get 00:03:28.159 --> 00:03:35.740 and how prosperous it may look. It's about what fruit does it develop. You know, the measure of a 00:03:35.740 --> 00:03:41.359 branch is by the fruit that's developed upon it. And the importance of it, today we're going to be 00:03:41.359 --> 00:03:47.599 talking about the fruit that remains, because Jesus made it clear that if they're not a part with, 00:03:47.780 --> 00:03:54.859 if they're not a part of him, that branch is no longer getting substance that it needs 00:03:54.860 --> 00:04:03.080 from the vine, fruit is going to linger. Fruit is going to be shriveled up. Fruit is going to be 00:04:03.080 --> 00:04:12.280 non-existent. But you know, you were saved to produce fruit for God's glory. You know, and fruit to our 00:04:12.280 --> 00:04:19.480 account is, we're going to look here this morning, fruit that remains. And he tells us why he's doing 00:04:19.480 --> 00:04:26.240 all of this because he understood the importance of it, that a believer would abide in him, just as his 00:04:26.240 --> 00:04:32.200 disciples were about to face a very challenging moment. You know, I don't know if you ever stopped 00:04:32.200 --> 00:04:38.920 to think about what the disciples went through as Jesus went to the cross. What was going through 00:04:38.920 --> 00:04:47.439 their mind? That they had given three and a half years of their lives following the one they thought 00:04:47.439 --> 00:04:52.240 in their mind was the Messiah. Now he's telling them, hey, we're going to go to the cross and die. 00:04:52.620 --> 00:04:57.639 But he says, you know, be of good cheer. You know, understand something. I'm going to rise again. 00:04:59.019 --> 00:05:02.620 But you know, just like them, oftentimes we hear the first part, not the second part. 00:05:04.779 --> 00:05:09.680 We don't understand what was going on. They were going to go through a very challenging time. 00:05:09.680 --> 00:05:18.900 It was going to try them in many ways. And Jesus said, you need to abide in difficulties. 00:05:19.439 --> 00:05:24.840 To understand, because as we've been talking through this series, you know, where a branch stays, 00:05:24.939 --> 00:05:30.340 a branch bears. You know, when you think about that reality, when you're attached to the vine, 00:05:30.699 --> 00:05:39.259 you will survive. You will produce fruit. You will become fruitful. It's just a dynamic of it. 00:05:39.259 --> 00:05:46.699 You know, when the branch stays, the fruit stays also. And he tells these 11 men that he did not, 00:05:47.259 --> 00:05:51.879 that they did not choose him, but he chose them for what he was going to do, to send them out. 00:05:52.199 --> 00:05:57.639 And that's what they were to do. They were supposed to bring forth fruit that will remain. So the 00:05:57.639 --> 00:06:01.779 question this morning is not whether you've been fruitful for a moment, but I want you to think 00:06:01.779 --> 00:06:07.680 about, is your fruit something that's going to remain? Is this something that has substance in your 00:06:07.680 --> 00:06:18.019 life? Everything from your character to eternal fruit that's laid up in heaven where moth and rust is 00:06:18.019 --> 00:06:24.819 not corrupt? Because I want you to understand, Jesus isn't looking just in the future, but he's looking 00:06:24.819 --> 00:06:34.079 in the present. That there ought to be fruit present in your life. That's the essence of what Jesus is 00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:40.339 telling him. No matter what, there ought to be fruit. So if you found John 15 this morning, let's stand 00:06:40.339 --> 00:06:45.899 together in honor of reading of the word of God. And we'll read here verses 16 and 17, and we'll have 00:06:45.899 --> 00:06:52.419 a word of prayer. And then we'll get into the message here this morning. So let's look here at verse 16. 00:06:52.539 --> 00:06:58.459 He says, you have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you that you should go forth and 00:06:58.459 --> 00:07:06.239 bring forth fruit and that your fruit should remain. That whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my 00:07:06.239 --> 00:07:15.719 name, he may give it you. These things I command you that you love one another. Let's pray. Heavenly 00:07:15.719 --> 00:07:22.000 Fathers, we just come before you this morning, Lord, once again. Lord, we're thankful that you are the one 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:29.759 that sustains. You're the one that provides. Lord, you're the life giver of everything in our lives. 00:07:29.860 --> 00:07:37.279 Lord, that our fruit is dependent upon you and us staying in you, abiding in you, remaining in you. 00:07:37.879 --> 00:07:44.339 And Lord, help us to see the necessity of even the challenges of life that we might stick to you. 00:07:45.199 --> 00:07:50.959 Lord, we might abide. Lord, we understand the principle here. And Lord, we pray that we might apply 00:07:50.959 --> 00:07:56.899 that truth. And Lord, we just give you all the praise in Jesus' name. Amen. May be seated. 00:07:57.819 --> 00:08:02.219 You know, as we see here, God starts, Jesus starts out with a very direct statement as he looks at these 00:08:02.219 --> 00:08:10.759 11. He says, I have chosen you. You know, he tells them that very clearly. You have not chosen me, 00:08:10.759 --> 00:08:16.779 but I have chosen you and ordained you. Now, this is important because this is where some people get 00:08:16.779 --> 00:08:21.139 confused because the question is, what did Jesus choose them and ordain them to do? 00:08:22.919 --> 00:08:29.899 Because he didn't choose them to salvation. That's not the context of the passage. 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:35.379 People will twist it that way, but I want you to understand that's not the context. He's talking to 00:08:35.379 --> 00:08:41.720 a group of men who had something very important happen in their life. I want you to understand they 00:08:41.720 --> 00:08:48.279 were chosen and ordained for a purpose. Their purpose was to be a foundation of the church that 00:08:48.279 --> 00:08:55.800 Jesus was going to form and to put forth. And as the churches go forth in the order and things 00:08:55.800 --> 00:09:03.300 established by the prophets and apostles, these men were chosen for a very specific task for a very 00:09:03.300 --> 00:09:09.580 specific time. They were chosen for responsibility. And we're going to see, because I want you to 00:09:09.580 --> 00:09:16.139 understand that it's not just them. God, when you get saved, God has chosen you. He has placed you. 00:09:16.220 --> 00:09:21.720 He's got some things for you. But we want you to see that they did this. These individuals, if you 00:09:21.720 --> 00:09:27.720 understand the New Testament, you'll find that God chose them out from among all that followed. 00:09:28.240 --> 00:09:35.540 Jesus didn't have 12 guys following him. When he chose the 12, there wasn't just 12 in the crowd. 00:09:35.539 --> 00:09:44.259 They didn't get selected because they showed up. The Bible tells us and makes it very clear that 00:09:44.259 --> 00:09:52.919 they were chosen. They were appointed by Jesus to the apostolic office. And he's speaking now to 11 00:09:52.919 --> 00:09:58.079 of them because Judas is having gone out. And that's a whole other thing to talk about on a different 00:09:58.079 --> 00:10:04.339 time. You can get on a whole rabbit trail about Judas. But I want you to understand that what Judas did 00:10:04.340 --> 00:10:10.540 was already foretold. The Old Testament told exactly what Judas was going to do. 00:10:11.800 --> 00:10:18.879 It did not catch Jesus by surprise. That's a whole different dynamic. But I want you to understand, 00:10:19.019 --> 00:10:25.320 Judas is gone. And it was an office that no man can just take on themselves. When he put, 00:10:25.440 --> 00:10:31.940 Jesus put those 11. At this point, he says, I've chosen you. I have ordained you. And he put them 00:10:31.940 --> 00:10:37.280 forth. I want you to understand, they had a specific task and responsibility given unto them. 00:10:38.060 --> 00:10:47.540 They were selected for this purpose. That's the chosen that it's talking about. Because these men 00:10:47.540 --> 00:10:55.960 were chosen out of a crowd of learners and qualified by years of following Jesus. And they laid a foundation 00:10:55.960 --> 00:11:02.120 in the church. Now look over Ephesians chapter 2 for a moment. Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 20. 00:11:02.120 --> 00:11:08.700 And it says, and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being 00:11:08.700 --> 00:11:15.060 the chief cornerstone. What's that talking about? It's talking about the church. A local church. And I 00:11:15.060 --> 00:11:21.500 want you to understand, it's not a universal church. It's a particular, each church is independent before God. 00:11:21.500 --> 00:11:29.440 Amen. It's the only way it works. I've never seen a universal assembly of the saints. But I have seen a 00:11:29.440 --> 00:11:36.639 physical assembly of the called out believers in an area gathering together. That's a reality 00:11:36.639 --> 00:11:45.480 that we see. But he says, built upon the foundation of the apostles. These men had a commissioning to go 00:11:45.480 --> 00:11:51.480 forth. It's not a statement though about their salvation. Because salvation, I want you to understand, 00:11:51.480 --> 00:11:58.080 was to whosoever will may come. Jesus made it very clear when speaking to Nicodemus. It says, 00:11:58.139 --> 00:12:04.899 whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. You know, the whosoevers. 00:12:06.039 --> 00:12:13.940 You know, I love that song we sang a few weeks ago. Whosoever will. You know, I'm glad that God 00:12:13.940 --> 00:12:21.740 didn't condemn some to hell and put some in heaven. He put it upon you and I as an individual say, 00:12:21.840 --> 00:12:28.320 what am I going to do with God's free gift of salvation? God offers it freely. 00:12:29.720 --> 00:12:37.460 But a gift is only good if you accept it. That if you take it, you know, Peter goes a little later 00:12:37.460 --> 00:12:43.639 and says this. He says, the Lord is not slack concerning his promises. Some men count slackness, 00:12:43.800 --> 00:12:50.379 but is longsuffering to us. We're not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to 00:12:50.379 --> 00:12:57.600 repentance. You know, that is key to understand that God doesn't rejoice in the death of the wicked. 00:12:58.180 --> 00:13:02.600 You know what God desires for everybody to turn to him? But you know what the reality is? Many people 00:13:02.600 --> 00:13:08.600 reject him. Very blatantly. We live in a society today that wants to blatantly reject God. 00:13:10.120 --> 00:13:15.360 Reject his truth. That's the reason we have people celebrating a mom who slaughters her children 00:13:15.360 --> 00:13:21.180 in a place that wants moms to be able to murder their babies up to the moment right before birth. 00:13:22.560 --> 00:13:28.440 You know what that is? That is against nature. That's against God's creation. It's a rebellion, 00:13:28.440 --> 00:13:35.040 an open rebellion against God. God didn't reject them. They rejected him. I want you to understand 00:13:35.040 --> 00:13:41.900 that because the world wants you to think opposite. That God hates people. When you think about it, 00:13:41.900 --> 00:13:46.080 I want you to think about when you hear people talk, their opinion is, God wants to just judge me. 00:13:46.180 --> 00:13:53.720 God doesn't want to judge you. He provided a way for you not to be judged. He said, I took the penalty 00:13:53.720 --> 00:14:01.360 of your judgment upon myself. That's a loving God that prepared. And Jesus said, I'm preparing you to do 00:14:01.360 --> 00:14:09.560 this, preparing you to go forth as I would describe and desire for you to do. But their office is 00:14:09.560 --> 00:14:14.540 something that God put them in for a particular time at a particular place, and they were going to 00:14:14.540 --> 00:14:21.960 have to walk in it. I want you to understand, we talked about this a couple of Wednesdays ago about 00:14:21.960 --> 00:14:28.400 what is an apostle. So if you weren't here on Wednesday, you can go back and look at that. That should be up 00:14:28.400 --> 00:14:36.100 online. We spent about 25 minutes talking about an apostle. So I'm not going to get back into all the 00:14:36.100 --> 00:14:41.480 details of that. So you can go back and reference that if you want, and where we talk about all that. But I want 00:14:41.480 --> 00:14:51.720 you to understand that the apostolic office is closed today. It closed in the New Testament. 00:14:51.960 --> 00:14:59.700 When those men died off, they were not replaced. But I want you to understand there are something 00:14:59.700 --> 00:15:09.519 about us today because God has chosen us in a different way. Similar in a parallel way because 00:15:09.519 --> 00:15:17.400 we're not called or chosen to be apostles, but we are a chosen generation. We are set apart for him. 00:15:17.399 --> 00:15:25.179 He has chosen us for a purpose. When you called upon him, he made it very clear. This reality, Ephesians 2 00:15:25.179 --> 00:15:33.240 in verse 10 tells us this, for we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus under good works with God 00:15:33.240 --> 00:15:38.419 hath before ordained that we should walk in them. You know what? If you're saved, God has ordained, 00:15:38.559 --> 00:15:44.960 God has chosen you to be obedient and to walk in those things that he has instructed. But oftentimes, 00:15:44.960 --> 00:15:52.800 we miss the point that it's a responsibility. When we understand what Jesus is telling them here, 00:15:53.259 --> 00:15:59.660 the reality of this, and so I don't want you to just sit here this morning and think that what Jesus 00:15:59.660 --> 00:16:07.580 ordained them to accomplish is finished because what he sent them to do is still going on in the sense that 00:16:07.580 --> 00:16:13.259 we follow through. You know, look a little later. Look over to John 17. Just turn over a page in your Bible 00:16:13.259 --> 00:16:20.300 there, and you'll find as you look at John 17, and you look down in verse 20, Jesus here in John 17 00:16:20.300 --> 00:16:26.740 is his great priestly prayer before he goes to the cross, and he says this, for them also which shall 00:16:26.740 --> 00:16:31.720 believe on me through their word. In other words, we are a continuation of what took place. 00:16:31.720 --> 00:16:40.259 If you're saved today, Jesus was praying for you right then. You're a part of the fruit that remained. 00:16:41.879 --> 00:16:48.660 I want you to understand every church that is a true church of Jesus Christ that follows the 00:16:48.660 --> 00:16:54.480 scripture, follow those things. I want you to understand is the reality of what Jesus is telling 00:16:54.480 --> 00:17:01.700 there's going to be fruit that remains. We are fruit that remains when you partake in what 00:17:01.700 --> 00:17:08.559 Christ has done. It's a lasting dynamic. Bible tells us that Jesus is the one that's going to build it, 00:17:08.700 --> 00:17:14.380 and the devil's not going to prevail against it. When we understand what's happening here, 00:17:14.440 --> 00:17:21.279 that he's sending them forth, and this dynamic applies to us, the branch that abides is a branch 00:17:21.279 --> 00:17:28.880 that bears, and it applies to us just as it did to them. Because look here at verse 16 again, 00:17:28.880 --> 00:17:35.920 and he tells them this, that you should go and bring forth fruit. He sent them for a reason. He sent 00:17:35.920 --> 00:17:42.860 that the fruit might remain, that your fruit should remain. You know, we see here that he tells them 00:17:42.860 --> 00:17:47.880 and instructs them. He says to go. I want you to understand if you're going to follow Jesus, it takes 00:17:47.880 --> 00:17:55.700 some action. You don't follow Jesus in a chair. You follow Jesus by doing. Following is an active 00:17:55.700 --> 00:18:05.860 participation. I want you to understand. Jesus is telling them this dynamic and understood that fruit 00:18:05.860 --> 00:18:12.240 ought to be something that makes a difference in your life to go and to do. Jesus gives us instructions 00:18:12.240 --> 00:18:20.059 to go. You know, the gospel doesn't go out by osmosis. The gospel's validated by your life, 00:18:20.059 --> 00:18:28.740 but it's shared when it goes forth. When you tell somebody about what Jesus has done in your life, 00:18:30.279 --> 00:18:36.119 that I'm not just a good, I'm not good in your eyes of the choices I make because of who I am, 00:18:36.179 --> 00:18:40.399 but it's because of who he is. You know, oftentimes I think we get a little self-righteous and think 00:18:40.399 --> 00:18:46.879 we're good because of ourselves. We forget that we're a sinner saved by grace and our goodness 00:18:46.880 --> 00:18:54.400 and righteousness and everything is in Christ. It's only in him that makes a difference. That's the 00:18:54.400 --> 00:19:02.200 reason this abiding is essential for us to go and to do what he would want us to do because when we 00:19:02.200 --> 00:19:08.860 think about this fruit, the going produces fruit. And these, you know, a couple weeks ago we talked about 00:19:08.860 --> 00:19:14.300 that fruit in our life. We talked about three areas. We talked about our character, our conduct, 00:19:14.299 --> 00:19:21.839 and converts. Who did your life impact? How was your character? You know, I want you to understand 00:19:21.839 --> 00:19:31.000 fruit isn't just seeing people saved. Fruit is abiding. It's all of the above. Because I want you 00:19:31.000 --> 00:19:36.799 to understand sometimes people replace abiding with saying, well, I handed out 2,000 tracts. I want you 00:19:36.799 --> 00:19:41.720 to say that might be a good thing, but if you didn't abide with Jesus, you missed the point. Well, some 00:19:41.720 --> 00:19:46.680 people say, well, I'm abiding, but I never share. You know, you missed the point. Because notice what he 00:19:46.680 --> 00:19:54.059 tells them here, that you should go and bring forth fruit and that your fruit should remain. 00:19:55.339 --> 00:20:03.140 What ought to remain in you? You know, Romans chapter 6 tells us this in verse 22. It says, 00:20:03.259 --> 00:20:10.039 now being made free from sin and become service to God, you have your fruit unto holiness and the 00:20:10.039 --> 00:20:18.119 end everlasting life. I want you to understand holiness in your life is not seasonal. The vine that grows 00:20:18.119 --> 00:20:27.279 in our character and it ends in everlasting life. You know, I want you to understand that your character 00:20:27.279 --> 00:20:36.119 of where God really works in your life happens under pressure. What are you abiding in? You know, 00:20:36.119 --> 00:20:46.599 a believer's character shows up under pressure. Not when everything's good. When life presses down on us, 00:20:46.639 --> 00:20:53.500 when things get difficult, when things are a challenge, is when you find out, am I connected to the vine or has 00:20:53.500 --> 00:21:01.279 everything been strangled? Because if you're connected to the vine, it doesn't matter. When something weighs in your 00:21:01.279 --> 00:21:08.039 life, you're going to be able to withstand it, whether it's a wind, the drought, or even the husbandman 00:21:08.039 --> 00:21:14.599 that comes and prunes in our life, what comes out is whatever the vine has been feeding it. You know, 00:21:15.680 --> 00:21:20.779 I want you to understand, if you abide in the vine, you're going to be provided with what you need. 00:21:22.539 --> 00:21:24.139 He's going to take care of you. 00:21:24.140 --> 00:21:32.240 He's one that's going to provide the nourishment of your life that your character might stay intact. 00:21:32.900 --> 00:21:40.360 Because when God allows a hard thing in your life, He's not manufacturing your character. He says, 00:21:55.240 --> 00:22:02.519 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into diverse temptations, knowing this, that the trying 00:22:02.519 --> 00:22:09.100 of your faith worketh patience, and let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, 00:22:09.319 --> 00:22:14.180 wanting nothing. What's James talking about there? He's talking about abiding in the vine, 00:22:14.180 --> 00:22:21.380 that you might stay nourished. You might have that joy, that peace, that love, all those things of your 00:22:21.380 --> 00:22:29.460 character that ought to come forth from the Spirit of God being viable in your life. When you're yielded to 00:22:29.460 --> 00:22:35.460 the Spirit, you will do those things. Those things will come forth. I want you to understand, a trial 00:22:35.460 --> 00:22:41.220 doesn't make you. A trial reveals what you've been abiding in. 00:22:43.539 --> 00:22:49.220 What you've been trusting in. When life gets hard and it affects your relationship to the Lord, 00:22:49.220 --> 00:22:53.700 you need to evaluate some things. Because if it didn't make the connection stronger, 00:22:54.579 --> 00:22:59.920 there's an abiding problem. Preacher, that's hard. That's what Jesus is telling them. 00:22:59.920 --> 00:23:06.580 He says, guys, if you're going to go through this difficulty, you must continue to abide. 00:23:07.019 --> 00:23:13.900 Because it not only remains in you, it remains in others. You know, think about 1 Thessalonians 2. 00:23:14.039 --> 00:23:19.900 It says, for what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Not even ye in the presence of our Lord 00:23:19.900 --> 00:23:27.100 Jesus Christ is coming, for ye are our glory and joy. You know, Paul's saying the fruit 00:23:27.099 --> 00:23:34.259 had names and faces in his life, the ones he impacted. Everybody from Timothy that we're 00:23:34.259 --> 00:23:40.099 talking about on Wednesday night, the impact and the fruit that had been produced in Timothy's life 00:23:40.099 --> 00:23:48.379 through his abiding in Christ.
