00:00:11.120 This is a very unique section of John's Gospel. 00:00:12.099 --> 00:00:15.200 Unlike the other Gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, 00:00:15.919 --> 00:00:18.000 John is about to give us five chapters, 00:00:18.719 --> 00:00:21.480 all of which happen in one evening, 00:00:22.300 --> 00:00:25.620 the evening of the Last Supper, the evening of Jesus' betrayal. 00:00:26.060 --> 00:00:27.100 And this is amazing. 00:00:27.100 --> 00:00:32.320 The best storytellers know when to quickly move the story along 00:00:32.320 --> 00:00:34.899 and when to really slow things down 00:00:34.899 --> 00:00:38.359 in order to help us see what's most important in the story. 00:00:38.840 --> 00:00:40.620 And that's what John is doing here for us. 00:00:41.140 --> 00:00:47.500 Almost a quarter of John's Gospel describes one evening in Jesus' life. 00:00:48.260 --> 00:00:51.340 So we have to know that what we're about to read here is very important. 00:00:52.480 --> 00:00:55.780 What's in these five chapters from 13 to 17? 00:00:55.780 --> 00:00:57.939 I'm just going to summarize it briefly. 00:00:58.120 --> 00:01:02.060 First of all, John tells us what happened before the Last Supper. 00:01:02.780 --> 00:01:06.000 Then John tells us about Judas, the betrayer, 00:01:06.359 --> 00:01:09.519 and what happened with him at the table that night. 00:01:10.240 --> 00:01:12.740 Then after that, Jesus goes on at length, 00:01:13.040 --> 00:01:15.859 teaching the disciples, encouraging them, 00:01:16.840 --> 00:01:19.260 telling them about what's soon to happen for them. 00:01:19.260 --> 00:01:23.200 And finally, sometime before Jesus is arrested in the garden, 00:01:23.340 --> 00:01:27.040 there's a whole chapter telling us what Jesus was praying that night. 00:01:27.359 --> 00:01:30.180 So these are very special moments in the story of Jesus. 00:01:31.140 --> 00:01:36.439 We heard last week what some of Jesus' last words were to the public before his death. 00:01:36.980 --> 00:01:40.780 But now John is giving us Jesus' last words to his disciples. 00:01:40.780 --> 00:01:45.320 This is almost like a sort of backstage pass, 00:01:45.840 --> 00:01:49.760 an invitation for you and I to come into the house 00:01:49.760 --> 00:01:55.219 where Jesus sat and ate his last meal with the disciples 00:01:55.219 --> 00:01:58.960 and to hear all that was said in those final hours. 00:01:59.620 --> 00:02:04.920 So let's begin by reading, starting in John 13, verse 1. 00:02:04.920 --> 00:02:09.020 It was just before the Passover festival. 00:02:10.439 --> 00:02:13.659 Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world 00:02:13.659 --> 00:02:15.319 and go to the Father. 00:02:16.360 --> 00:02:19.000 Having loved his own who were in the world, 00:02:19.539 --> 00:02:21.139 he loved them to the end. 00:02:22.219 --> 00:02:23.920 The evening meal was in progress, 00:02:24.180 --> 00:02:26.699 and the devil had already prompted Judas, 00:02:27.319 --> 00:02:29.759 the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 00:02:31.120 --> 00:02:34.420 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, 00:02:34.919 --> 00:02:38.439 and that he had come from God and was returning to God. 00:02:39.219 --> 00:02:40.559 So he got up from the meal, 00:02:41.359 --> 00:02:42.619 took off his outer clothing, 00:02:43.259 --> 00:02:44.979 and wrapped a towel around his waist. 00:02:45.959 --> 00:02:47.899 After that, he poured water into a basin 00:02:47.899 --> 00:02:50.819 and began to wash his disciples' feet, 00:02:51.959 --> 00:02:55.399 drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 00:02:57.859 --> 00:03:00.899 So John tells us that this was just before the Passover. 00:03:01.199 --> 00:03:03.599 The translation on screen says Passover festival, 00:03:03.599 --> 00:03:05.979 but the same word can also mean feast, 00:03:06.219 --> 00:03:10.079 as in the special meal that the Israelites would eat together 00:03:10.079 --> 00:03:12.740 every year on the day of Passover. 00:03:12.959 --> 00:03:15.180 And this is probably what John means. 00:03:15.939 --> 00:03:18.240 This is the evening of Passover. 00:03:19.299 --> 00:03:21.659 And John gives us a little bit of a peek 00:03:21.659 --> 00:03:24.500 into what's going on in the heart and mind of Jesus 00:03:24.500 --> 00:03:26.319 at this moment. 00:03:26.319 --> 00:03:28.159 He says, 00:03:28.299 --> 00:03:30.299 Jesus knew that the hour had come 00:03:30.299 --> 00:03:31.979 for him to leave this world into the world 00:04:02.599 --> 00:04:03.819 by his Father. 00:04:04.759 --> 00:04:07.400 But now we hear that Jesus is about to leave 00:04:07.400 --> 00:04:08.379 this world 00:04:08.379 --> 00:04:10.900 and go to his Father. 00:04:11.719 --> 00:04:12.939 And we might be wondering, 00:04:13.079 --> 00:04:14.840 if we imagine ourselves there in the room 00:04:14.840 --> 00:04:16.480 with the disciples, 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:18.279 what do you mean, Jesus? 00:04:18.279 --> 00:04:19.719 Leave this world? 00:04:20.779 --> 00:04:22.119 Go to the Father? 00:04:23.039 --> 00:04:23.739 Like how? 00:04:25.399 --> 00:04:27.459 Is this referring to Jesus' death 00:04:27.459 --> 00:04:30.239 and his spirit going to be with the Father 00:04:30.239 --> 00:04:31.179 after he dies? 00:04:32.500 --> 00:04:35.459 Or is this referring to Jesus ascending to heaven 00:04:35.459 --> 00:04:37.539 over a month later? 00:04:38.879 --> 00:04:39.859 For the moment, 00:04:40.079 --> 00:04:42.000 we're
