around us is pretty much celebrating Christmas, more or less. 00:00:13.620 --> 00:00:22.140 So that Christmas Day on the 25th feels like the last day of a season of parties, of feasting, of decorations. 00:00:22.660 --> 00:00:27.320 But the church has historically observed this season differently. 00:00:28.039 --> 00:00:34.420 Historically, the season of Advent, which begins on the first Sunday of the four Sundays before Christmas Day, 00:00:35.079 --> 00:00:40.060 is a season of waiting, of preparation, of hope. 00:00:41.159 --> 00:00:48.299 We remember the days of Israel in exile, awaiting a Savior, a Messiah who would come and gather up Israel and deliver her from all her enemies. 00:00:49.060 --> 00:00:54.420 At the same time, we as the church await the second coming of that same Savior, 00:00:54.420 --> 00:00:57.780 one who will at last set all things to rights. 00:00:59.380 --> 00:01:08.400 You could say that the season of Advent is simultaneously the first month and the 13th month of the Christian year. 00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:14.840 So in this season, generally, we don't sing Christmas carols that say, 00:01:14.980 --> 00:01:16.580 Jesus is come. 00:01:17.360 --> 00:01:21.120 We sing in Advent, come Lord Jesus. 00:01:21.980 --> 00:01:27.420 In the passages from the Bible tonight, aren't the accounts of Jesus being born and the events following. 00:01:27.939 --> 00:01:34.500 We read passages about waiting for a Savior to come and about preparing ourselves for that day. 00:01:34.500 --> 00:01:42.019 Now, one of the passages that was read was from a letter that the Apostle Paul wrote to a young church, 00:01:42.579 --> 00:01:46.060 to what was a young church, in the ancient city of Thessalonica. 00:01:47.079 --> 00:01:51.519 The recipients of that letter were eagerly awaiting the return of Jesus. 00:01:51.640 --> 00:01:53.400 They thought it would happen any day. 00:01:53.539 --> 00:01:57.159 And so Paul's instructions for them was on how to unjust powers and by suffering injustice and oppression and then a 00:04:16.459 --> 00:04:24.060 messiah would come to set all things to rights this messiah would conquer all of israel's earthly 00:04:24.060 --> 00:04:31.879 enemies and inaugurate an age to come and this age to come would be a purely good era when god would 00:04:31.879 --> 00:04:39.840 rule the world now we believe that a messiah did come but his coming was different than what was 00:04:39.840 --> 00:04:48.879 expected um he didn't come as this charismatic military leader who would lead israel to defeat 00:04:48.879 --> 00:04:58.079 the roman empire and be crowned the king he came as a poor humble unattractive carpenter from the 00:04:58.079 --> 00:05:09.519 hillbilly part of palestine he came to deal with the real enemies of god's people sin and death 00:05:09.519 --> 00:05:17.800 he conquered sin by dying for our sins on the cross taking the punishment that our sins deserved 00:05:17.800 --> 00:05:24.579 and he conquered death by rising from the dead and on the day to come in the future all of god's people 00:05:24.579 --> 00:05:34.280 will themselves experience a resurrection that day will coincide when jesus comes again on that day 00:05:34.280 --> 00:05:41.500 he will finally destroy all powers that oppose the good just and peaceful rule of god so history has 00:05:41.500 --> 00:05:50.779 unfolded similarly to how the ancient jews expected except that this current age has yet to fully pass 00:05:50.779 --> 00:05:58.040 away we're still in the current age and we are in the age to come 00:06:59.740 he unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written the spirit of the lord is upon me 00:06:59.740 --> 00:07:05.459 because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor he has sent me to proclaim liberty to 00:07:05.459 --> 00:07:12.279 the captives and recovering of sight to the blind to set at liberty those who are oppressed to proclaim 00:07:12.279 --> prophecy from isaiah but look what he doesn't say 00:07:37.439 --> 00:07:44.219 he doesn't say the day of vengeance of our god he finishes right before he gets there 00:07:44.220 --> 00:07:50.340 now this day of vengeance is what the jewish people were waiting and hoping for and jesus is 00:07:50.340 --> 00:07:56.460 effectively saying i've come to inaugurate the new age but not fully not yet this part is to come later 00:07:56.460 --> 00:08:04.220 the kingdom is breaking in now with good news for the poor the captives the blind and the oppressed 00:08:04.220 --> 00:08:12.340 the kingdom will joy now now some members of their 00:09:06.399 --> 00:09:13.240 church have died and it really distressed and confused them because they believed that jesus's return 00:09:13.240 --> 00:09:20.940 would happen before any of them had physically died so when they physically died they were um confused 00:09:20.940 --> 00:09:21.899 distressed 00:09:21.899 --> 00:09:30.379 now it's probably the hardest thing to deal the the hardest thing to deal with in the already but not 00:09:30.379 --> 00:09:31.799 yet is is suffering 00:09:31.799 --> 00:09:41.480 this problem of suffering whether it's due to the brokenness of the world or the brokenness or frailty 00:09:41.480 --> 00:09:51.480 of our bodies or due to injustice or due to oppression or persecution and the thessalonians were facing all of this 00:09:51.480 --> 00:09:56.899 and we're wondering how does this fit in with what we had expected to happen 00:09:56.899 --> 00:10:03.960 some had had their property confiscated some were prevented from practicing their trades because of their 00:10:03.960 --> 00:10:06.700 confession as of jesus is lord 00:10:06.700 --> 00:10:16.600 some were shunned by their families some were insulted some were beaten some were put to death 00:10:16.600 --> 00:10:19.360 this was persecution of the worst kind 00:10:19.360 --> 00:10:23.240 so how were the thessalonians to respond
