Today we're going to hear about one of the most spectacular things that ever happened with Jesus. 00:00:19.800 --> 00:00:27.160 I mean, if all we've already seen and heard already isn't spectacular enough, this one will top most of them. 00:00:27.160 --> 00:00:32.060 But before we get to that, there's just this one verse that we didn't get to last week. 00:00:32.159 --> 00:00:38.480 One thing that Jesus said as He was teaching the crowd that I just want to take a brief moment to look at together with you. 00:00:39.439 --> 00:00:41.659 Luke 9 verse 27. 00:00:42.719 --> 00:00:43.320 Jesus said, 00:00:43.920 --> 00:00:51.359 Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God. 00:00:53.260 --> 00:00:55.120 Many stumble over these words. 00:00:55.119 --> 00:01:03.879 What Jesus seems to be saying is that there are some there in the crowd who will see the kingdom of God before they die. 00:01:06.780 --> 00:01:17.400 But then as we heard a couple weeks ago, Jesus has told the twelve that the kingdom of God is going to unfold in a way that's contrary to the people's expectations. 00:01:18.019 --> 00:01:21.840 They're looking for that political, earthly rule right now. 00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:29.960 But Jesus has been telling His disciples that He must first suffer and be rejected and be killed. 00:01:30.960 --> 00:01:33.020 And on the third day, rise again. 00:01:33.019 --> 00:01:41.519 So there's this unexpected path to how God's Messiah will come to the throne of God's kingdom. 00:01:41.640 --> 00:01:46.259 It's going to happen through suffering and rejection and death. 00:01:46.859 --> 00:01:48.259 Rising from the dead. 00:01:49.019 --> 00:01:50.799 Ascending to the throne of heaven. 00:01:51.579 --> 00:01:56.519 And then returning to rule and to reign on an earthly throne. 00:01:56.519 --> 00:02:00.099 And this is where we stumble over these words of Jesus. 00:02:00.899 --> 00:02:04.819 Because based on these words, maybe like the people in Jesus' day, 00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:07.959 we're either looking for the wrong kind of kingdom, 00:02:08.479 --> 00:02:15.300 or we're looking for the fullness of God's kingdom in the lifetime of these people. 00:02:15.300 --> 00:02:20.260 As the world might read these words, 00:02:21.040 --> 00:02:24.520 they would look at this and maybe come to the conclusion that Jesus is a false prophet. 00:02:27.420 --> 00:02:28.540 He was killed. 00:02:29.260 --> 00:02:32.740 They would say He was rumored to have risen from the dead, 00:02:32.900 --> 00:02:35.360 and rumored to have been seen by His followers, 00:02:35.540 --> 00:02:36.840 and then He was never seen again. 00:02:36.939 --> 00:02:39.140 There was no kingdom of Jesus. 00:02:39.139 --> 00:02:42.219 And then not long after that, 00:02:42.299 --> 00:02:44.959 the Jews in the land were wiped out or scattered. 00:02:46.379 --> 00:02:48.939 That's how our world may look at these words. 00:02:49.279 --> 00:02:52.059 As a prophecy of Jesus that never came true. 00:02:53.299 --> 00:02:56.879 But it's because they were looking for the wrong kind of kingdom altogether. 00:02:59.539 --> 00:03:03.759 If we take Jesus' words seriously and believe them to be true, as they are, 00:03:04.319 --> 00:03:08.060 He must mean that the kingdom of God comes near 00:03:08.060 --> 00:03:14.780 and begins with power during the lives of these very people that He's speaking to. 00:03:15.800 --> 00:03:18.140 Not the full measure of the kingdom, 00:03:18.840 --> 00:03:21.719 but a good measure of the kingdom. the time we get to the end of Luke's gospel, 00:03:32.360 --> 00:03:35.480 if we haven't already said yes, that's what we're seeing, 00:03:35.479 --> 00:03:38.519 I think we'll see that yes, it is obvious. 00:03:38.759 --> 00:03:39.419 It is visible. 00:03:39.619 --> 00:03:42.239 God's kingdom has come with power. 00:03:42.939 --> 00:03:45.539 Enough that we can look back at these words and say, 00:03:46.339 --> 00:03:48.379 yes, we saw it. 00:03:48.479 --> 00:03:52.519 It came in our life, in the lifetimes of these people. 00:03:53.659 --> 00:03:54.979 Not the final fullness, 00:03:54.979 --> 00:03:57.299 but the breaking in, 00:03:57.679 --> 00:03:58.560 the first light, 00:03:59.659 --> 00:04:00.899 the dawn of it. 00:04:01.939 --> 00:04:04.419 And so we'll keep an eye was praying, 00:04:23.800 --> 00:04:26.720 the appearance of his face changed 00:04:26.720 --> 00:04:31.360 and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 00:04:32.939 --> 00:04:33.580 Two he was saying. 00:05:17.259 --> 00:05:24.120 So this next spectacular thing that we just read 00:05:24.120 --> 00:05:28.000 happens about eight days after Jesus said what He did, 00:05:28.060 --> 00:05:29.740 what we just heard in verse 27. 00:05:30.480 --> 00:05:33.120 Jesus takes only three of the twelve disciples with Him, 00:05:33.639 --> 00:05:34.680 Peter, James, and John, 00:05:34.779 --> 00:05:36.759 and they hike up a mountain. 00:05:37.839 --> 00:05:40.360 The purpose of this little trip, Luke tells us, 00:05:40.759 --> 00:05:41.439 was to pray. 00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:45.879 With the crowds always following Jesus around, 00:05:46.519 --> 00:05:49.040 there were very few ways to get away from them 00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:51.219 for time to talk with God. 00:05:51.899 --> 00:05:53.600 One way was to get into a boat, 00:05:53.699 --> 00:05:54.620 as we've seen already, 00:05:54.860 --> 00:05:57.959 and another way was to start hiking up a mountain. 00:05:59.459 --> 00:06:00.899 And Luke's the only gospel writer 00:06:00.899 --> 00:06:02.959 who tells us that the purpose of this trip 00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:04.519 is to pray. 00:06:04.519 --> 00:06:08.339 And as we read this account, 00:06:08.519 --> 00:06:11.379 there's a very subtle hint here, I think, 00:06:11.439 --> 00:06:13.680 in the way Luke tells us. 00:06:14.680 --> 00:06:16.159 None of the other gospel writers 00:06:16.159 --> 00:06:17.740 have some of these details. 00:06:18.599 --> 00:06:20.519 We notice, in verse 29, 00:06:21.519 --> 00:06:23.699 that as Jesus was praying, 00:06:23.699 --> 00:06:27.139 the appearance of His face changed, 00:06:27.699 --> 00:06:29.120 and His clothes became 00:06:29.120 --> 00:06:32.459 as bright as a flash of lightning. 00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:36.519 And we'll talk about that transformation in a moment, 00:06:37.079 --> 00:06:39.980 but notice that it's as Jesus was praying 00:06:39.980 --> 00:06:42.240 that all this happened. 00:06:42.719 -->
